Selectivity in Chemiresistive Gas Sensors: Strategies and Challenges

The demand for highly functional chemical gas sensors has surged due to the increasing awareness of human health to monitor metabolic disorders or noncommunicable diseases, safety measures against harmful greenhouse and/or explosive gases, and determination of food freshness. Over the years of dedicated research, several types of chemiresistive gas sensors have been realized with appreciable sensitivities toward various gases. However, critical issues such as poor selectivity and sluggish response/recovery speeds continue to impede their widespread commercialization. Specifically, the mechanisms behind the selective response of some chemiresistive materials toward specific gas analytes remain unclear. In this review, we discuss state-of-the-art strategies employed to attain gas-selective chemiresistive materials, with particular emphasis on materials design, surface modification or functionalization with catalysts, defect engineering, material structure control, and integration with physical/chemical gas filtration media. The nature of material surface-gas interactions and the supporting mechanisms are elucidated, opening opportunities for optimizing the materials design, fine-tuning the gas sensing performance, and guiding the selection of the most appropriate materials for the accurate detection of specific gases. This review concludes with recommendations for future research directions and potential opportunities for further selectivity improvements.

Water-Stable MIL-MOFs Developed Through a Novel Sacrifice-Protection Strategy Inspired by Butterfly Wings' Scales for Long-Term Turn-On Fluorescence Sensing of H2S

Metal-organic frameworks, which are the desired candidates for biosensing application due to their tunable properties, are significantly hindered by their rapid degradation in aqueous solutions, as well as the loss of their inherent fluorescence. Most studies aim to improve the hydrophobicity of materials by modifying their contact angle, thereby enhancing water stability. However, water droplets poorly adhere to the surface of hydrophobic materials, limiting their application for direct contact and detection in aqueous environments. Drawing inspiration from the sacrificial protection mechanism of butterfly wings used to evade predation and entanglement, a universal approach is successfully developed to protect water-sensitive MIL-MOFs from water molecule attack while preserving good hydrophilicity. Using the organic ligand 2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylic acid (bpydc) as sacrificial protection scales, the MIL-125-NH2-bpydc demonstrated broad pH structural stability (pH 2-12) and fluorescence stability increased by 10.17 time in aqueous solutions, achieving the highest performance in MILMOFs. The MIL-125-NH2-bpydc is biocompatible enabling it to perform long-term fluorescence imaging in living cells and zebrafish, further detecting hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in the aqueous and biological systems via turn-on fluorescence emission. This study offers a novel and universal sacrifice-protection strategy for the design and development of the luminescent biocompatible MOFs tailored for biosensing applications.

Application of porous crystalline framework materials towards direct flue gas conversion

The photocatalytic direct conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) from flue gas into high-value products is regarded as one of the most promising approaches to achieving carbon neutrality. Nevertheless, this direct conversion process encounters significant challenges, primarily due to practical limitations such as low CO2 concentrations and the presence of interfering substances. Porous crystalline framework materials exhibit considerable potential in flue gas conversion, attributed to their robust CO2 capture capabilities, well-defined and tunable structures, high specific surface areas, and plentiful catalytic sites. This review highlights strategies to improve the capture and activation of low-concentration CO2 by porous crystalline materials including functionalization of organic ligands, creation of open metal sites (OMSs) and Lewis basic sites (LBSs), as well as strategies to improve the catalytic activity of flue gas reforming, which encompasses anchoring of catalytic sites to the skeleton, fabricating composites, and preparing derived materials. The review aims to provide insights and guidance for the design and development of efficient catalysts specifically tailored for flue gas reforming.

Yttrium-based metal-organic frameworks built on hexanuclear clusters

Yttrium-based metal-organic frameworks built on hexanuclear clusters (Y6-MOFs) represent an important subgroup of MOFs that are assembled from Y6 clusters and diverse organic linkers, featuring a variety of topologies. Due to the robust Y-O bonds and high connectivity of hexanuclear SBUs, Y6-MOFs are generally thermally stable and resistant to water. Additionally, their pore structures are highly tunable through the practice of the reticular chemistry strategy, resulting in excellent performance in gas adsorption and separation related applications. Y6-MOFs are structurally analogous to Zr6-MOFs; however, the existence of charge-balancing cations in Y6-MOFs serves as an additional pore structure regulator, enhancing their tailorability with respect to pore shape and dimensions. In this Frontier article, we summarize the main advances in the design and synthesis of Y6-MOFs, with a particular focus on the precise engineering of their pore structure for gas separation. Future directions of research efforts in this field are also discussed.

Synthesis, Characterization and Photophysical Properties of a New Family of Rare-Earth Cluster-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

In this work, nine new rare-earth metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs, where RE=Lu(III), Yb(III), Tm(III), Er(III), Ho(III), Dy(III), Tb(III), Gd(III), and Eu(III)) isostructural to Zr-MOF-808 are synthesized, characterized, and studied regarding their photophysical properties. Materials with high crystallinity and surface area are obtained from a reproducible synthetic procedure that involves the use of two fluorinated modulators. At the same time, these new RE-MOFs display tunable photoluminescent properties due to efficient linker-to-metal energy transfer promoted by the antenna effect, resulting in a series of RE-MOFs displaying lanthanoid-based emissions spanning the visible and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Disorder and Sorption Preferences in a Highly Stable Fluoride-Containing Rare-Earth fcu-Type Metal-Organic Framework

Rare-earth (RE) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) synthesized in the presence of fluorine-donating modulators or linkers are an important new subset of functional MOFs. However, the exact nature of the REaXb core of the molecular building block (MBB) of the MOF, where X is a μ2 or 3-bridging group, remains unclear. Investigation of one of the archetypal members of this family with the stable fcu framework topology, Y-fum-fcu-MOF (1), using a combination of experimental techniques, including high-field (20 T) solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, has determined two sources of framework disorder involving the μ3-X face-capping group of the MBB and the fumarate (fum) linker. The core of the MBB of 1 is shown to contain a mixture of μ3-F- and (OH)- groups with preferential occupation at the crystallographically different face-capping sites that result in different internally lined framework tetrahedral cages. The fum linker is also found to display a disordered arrangement involving bridging- or chelating-bridging bis-bidentate modes over the fum linker positions without influencing the MBB orientation. This linker disorder will, upon activation, result in the creation of Y3+ ions with potentially one or two additional uncoordinated sites possessing differing degrees of Lewis acidity. Crystallographically determined host-guest relationships for simple sorbates demonstrate the favored sorption sites for N2, CO2, and CS2 molecules that reflect the chemical nature of both the framework and the sorbate species with the structural partitioning of the μ3-groups apparent in determining the favored sorption site of CS2. The two types of disorder found within 1 demonstrate the complexity of fluoride-containing RE-MOFs and highlight the possibility to tune this and other frameworks to contain different proportions and segregations of μ3-face-capping groups and degrees of linker disorder for specifically tailored applications.

The Effect of Linker-to-Metal Energy Transfer on the Photooxidation Performance of an Isostructural Series of Pyrene-Based Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Frameworks

The tetratopic linker, 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(p-benzoic acid)pyrene (H4 TBAPy) along with rare-earth (RE) ions is used for the synthesis of 9 isostructures of a metal-organic framework (MOF) with shp topology, named RE-CU-10 (RE = Y(III), Gd(III), Tb(III), Dy(III), Ho(III), Er(III), Tm(III), Yb(III), and Lu(III)). The synthesis of each RE-CU-10 analogue requires different reaction conditions to achieve phase pure products. Single crystal X-ray diffraction indicates the presence of a RE9 -cluster in Y- to Tm-CU-10, while a RE11 -cluster is observed for Yb- and Lu-CU-10. The photooxidation performance of RE-CU-10 analogues is evaluated, observing competition between linker-to-metal energy transfer versus the generation of singlet oxygen. The singlet oxygen produced is used to detoxify a mustard gas simulant 2-chloroethylethyl sulfide, with half-lives ranging from 4.0 to 5.8 min, some of the fastest reported to date using UV-irradiation and < 1 mol% catalyst, in methanol under O2 saturation.

(FeMnCe)-co-doped MOF-74 with significantly improved performance for overall water splitting

Developing inexpensive electrocatalysts with high activity and stability is of great value for overall water splitting. In this work, we designed a series of 3d-4f (FeMnCe)-trimetallic MOF-74 with different ratios of 3d- and 4f-metal centers. Among them, FeMn6Ce0.5-MOF-74/NF exhibited the best electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in an alkaline solution. It only requires a low overpotential of 281 mV@100 mA cm-2 for OER and 186 mV@-10 mA cm-2 for HER in 1 M KOH. With FeMn6Ce0.5-MOF-74/NF as the anode and cathode in the overall water splitting system, only 1.65 V is needed to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm-2. In particular, for the as-fabricated FeMn6Ce0.5-MOF-74/NF||Pt/C cell unit, only 1.40 V is needed to achieve 10 mA cm-2. Therefore, the successful design of 3d-4f mixed-metallic MOF-74 provides a new viewpoint to develop highly efficient non-precious metal electrocatalysts.

Effect of Linker Structure and Functionalization on Secondary Gas Formation in Metal-Organic Frameworks

Rare-earth terephthalic acid (BDC)-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising candidate materials for acid gas separation and adsorption from flue gas streams. However, previous simulations have shown that acid gases (H₂O, NO₂, and SO₂) react with the hydroxyl on the BDC linkers to form protonated acid gases as a potential degradation mechanism. Herein, gas-phase computational approaches were used to identify the formation energies of these secondary protonated acid gases across multiple BDC linker molecules. Formation energies for secondary protonated acid gases were evaluated using both density functional theory (DFT) and correlated wave function methods for varying BDC-gas reaction mechanisms. Upon validation of DFT to reproduce wave function calculation results, rotated conformational linkers and chemically functionalized BDC linkers with -OH, -NH₂, and -SH were investigated. The calculations show that the rotational conformation affects the molecule stability. Double-functionalized BDC linkers, where two functional groups are substituted onto BDC, showed varied reaction energies depending on whether the functional groups donate or withdraw electrons from the aromatic system. Based on these results, BDC linker design must balance adsorption performance with degradation via linker dehydrogenation for the design of stable MOFs for acid gas separations.

Metal-Organic Frameworks for Greenhouse Gas Applications

Using petrol to supply energy for a car or burning coal to heat a building generates plenty of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, including carbon dioxide (CO₂ ), water vapor (H₂ O), methane (CH₄ ), nitrous oxide (N₂ O), ozone (O₃ ), fluorinated gases. These up-and-coming metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are structurally endowed with rigid inorganic nodes and versatile organic linkers, which have been extensively used in the GHG-related applications to improve the lives and protect the environment. Porous MOF materials and their derivatives have been demonstrated to be competitive and promising candidates for GHG separation, storage and conversions as they shows facile preparation, large porosity, adjustable nanostructure, abundant topology, and tunable physicochemical property. Enormous progress has been made in GHG storage and separation intrinsically stemmed from the different interaction between guest molecule and host framework from MOF itself in the recent five years. Meanwhile, the use of porous MOF materials to transform GHG and the influence of external conditions on the adsorption performance of MOFs for GHG are also enclosed. In this review, it is also highlighted that the existing challenges and future directions are discussed and envisioned in the rational design, facile synthesis and comprehensive utilization of MOFs and their derivatives for practical applications.

Orthogonal luminescence lifetime encoding by intermetallic energy transfer in heterometallic rare-earth MOFs

Lifetime-encoded materials are particularly attractive as optical tags, however examples are rare and hindered in practical application by complex interrogation methods. Here, we demonstrate a design strategy towards multiplexed, lifetime-encoded tags via engineering intermetallic energy transfer in a family of heterometallic rare-earth metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The MOFs are derived from a combination of a high-energy donor (Eu), a low-energy acceptor (Yb) and an optically inactive ion (Gd) with the 1,2,4,5 tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl) benzene (TCPB) organic linker. Precise manipulation of the luminescence decay dynamics over a wide microsecond regime is achieved via control over metal distribution in these systems. Demonstration of this platform's relevance as a tag is attained via a dynamic double encoding method that uses the braille alphabet, and by incorporation into photocurable inks patterned on glass and interrogated via digital high-speed imaging. This study reveals true orthogonality in encoding using independently variable lifetime and composition, and highlights the utility of this design strategy, combining facile synthesis and interrogation with complex optical properties.

Dramatic Enhancement of Rare-Earth Metal-Organic Framework Stability Via Metal Cluster Fluorination

Rare-earth polynuclear metal-organic frameworks (RE-MOFs) have demonstrated high durability for caustic acid gas adsorption and separation based on gas adsorption to the metal clusters. The metal clusters in the RE-MOFs traditionally contain RE metals bound by μ₃-OH groups connected via organic linkers. Recent studies have suggested that these hydroxyl groups could be replaced by fluorine atoms during synthesis that includes a fluorine-containing modulator. Here, a combined modeling and experimental study was undertaken to elucidate the role of metal cluster fluorination on the thermodynamic stability, structure, and gas adsorption properties of RE-MOFs. Through systematic density-functional theory calculations, fluorinated clusters were found to be thermodynamically more stable than hydroxylated clusters by up to 8-16 kJ/mol per atom for 100% fluorination. The extent of fluorination in the metal clusters was validated through a ¹⁹F NMR characterization of 2,5-dihydroxyterepthalic acid (Y-DOBDC) MOF synthesized with a fluorine-containing modulator. ¹⁹F magic-angle spinning NMR identified two primary peaks in the isotropic chemical shift (δ_iso) spectra located at -64.2 and -69.6 ppm, matching calculated ¹⁹F NMR δ_iso peaks at -63.0 and -70.0 ppm for fluorinated systems. Calculations also indicate that fluorination of the Y-DOBDC MOF had negligible effects on the acid gas (SO₂, NO₂, H₂O) binding energies, which decreased by only ∼4 kJ/mol for the 100% fluorinated structure relative to the hydroxylated structure. Additionally, fluorination did not change the relative gas binding strengths (SO₂ > H₂O > NO₂). Therefore, for the first time the presence of fluorine in the metal clusters was found to significantly stabilize RE-MOFs without changing their acid-gas adsorption properties.

Programmable Photoluminescence via Intrinsic and DNA-Fluorophore Association in a Mixed Cluster Heterometallic MOF

A rapid and facile design strategy to create a highly complex optical tag with programmable, multimodal photoluminescent properties is described. This was achieved via intrinsic and DNA-fluorophore hidden signatures. As a first covert feature of the tag, an intricate novel heterometallic near-infrared (NIR)-emitting mesoporous metal-organic framework (MOF) was designed and synthesized. The material is constructed from two chemically distinct, homometallic hexanuclear clusters based on Nd and Yb. Uniquely, the Nd-based cluster is observed here for the first time in a MOF and consists of two staggered Nd μ₃-oxo trimers. To generate controlled, multimodal, and tailorable emission with difficult to counterfeit features, the NIR-emissive MOF was post-synthetically modified via a fluorescent DNA oligo labeling design strategy. The surface attachment of several distinct fluorophores, including the simultaneous attachment of up to three distinct fluorescently labeled oligos was achieved, with excitation and emission properties across the visible spectrum (480-800 nm). The DNA inclusion as a secondary covert element in the tag was demonstrated via the detection of SYBR Gold dye association. Importantly, the approach implemented here serves as a rapid and tailorable way to encrypt distinct information in a facile and modular fashion and provides an innovative technology in the quest toward complex optical tags.

The chemistry behind room temperature synthesis of hafnium and cerium UiO-66 derivatives

RT formation of Hf and Ce UiO-66 derivatives is investigated using a one-step method where the linker and metal salt are simply combined, and a two-step method where the inorganic component is pre-heated to form metal clusters.
