Abstract
Janus mesh with two-sided asymmetric wettability shows high potential for selective oil-water and emulsion separation. However, it remains a challenge to construct Janus mesh structures with good stability and extremely asymmetric wettability. Herein, a novel Janus mesh with asymmetric wettability was structured by two different precursors, polydimethylsiloxane/zinc oxide (PDMS/ZnO) and zinc oxide-polyacrylonitrile/N,N-dimethylformamide (ZnO-PAN/DMF), by electrostatic printing, including electrostatic air spraying and electrostatic spinning. The prepared Janus mesh has special micro-nanostructures on two sides, including PDMS@ZnO and ZnO@PAN. On the basis of gravity, when the placement direction is changed, Janus mesh can effectively separate oil-water mixtures of different densities and surfactant-stabilized oil-water emulsions. Meanwhile, the obtained Janus mesh exhibited good separation efficiency (>96.3%) for various oil-water mixtures, and the flux was up to 2621 ± 30 L m-2 h-1. The Janus mesh was cycled 20 times with no weakening in separation efficiency, indicating satisfactory cycling stability. The Janus mesh displayed good stability under harsh conditions (acidic, alkaline, and high temperature). The Janus mesh can realize low energy input and long-lasting oil-water separation, which has widespread application prospects in intelligent oil-water separation. This top-down electrostatic printing strategy provides a way to construct Janus interface materials with practical applications.

Abstract
Massive discharge of oily wastewater and frequent occurrence of offshore oil spills have posed an enormous threat to the socioeconomic and ecological environments. Janus membranes with asymmetric wettability properties have great potential for oil/water separation applications and have attracted widespread attention. However, existing Janus membranes still suffer from complex and costly manufacturing processes, low permeability, and poor recyclability. Herein, a novel and facile strategy was proposed to fabricate a Janus copper mesh with opposite wettability for unidirectional water transport and efficient oil/water separation. The hydrophilic side of the Janus copper mesh was prepared by coating it with Cu(OH)2 nanoneedles via a chemical oxidation method. The hydrophobic side was fabricated by coating it with hydrophobic SiO2 nanoparticles via a facile spraying method. The as-prepared Janus copper mesh showed asymmetric surface wettability, which can achieve unidirectional water transport and efficient oil/water separation with excellent recyclability, exhibiting great application potential for droplet manipulation and wastewater purification.

Abstract
Adsorption materials are a cost-effective and simple method for oil spill remediation, but their efficiency is limited by high crude oil viscosity. Additionally, non-degradable materials pose another risk of secondary pollution, such as microplastic debris. Here, an environmentally-friendly stereo-complex polylactide composite (SCC) aerogel were developed via water-assisted thermally induced phase separation. The SCC with 3 wt% carbon nanotubes had a hierarchical structure of micro/nanoscale pores and high content of stereo-complex crystallites (35.7 %). Along with the excellent water repellency (water contact angle: 157°), SCC aerogel was 2.7 times as resistant to hydrolysis than poly(l-lactide) aerogel (Ph = 13, 37 °C). Additionally, a maximum absorption capacity of 41.2 g g-1 and over 97 % oil/water separation efficiency after 10 cycles were obtained in low viscosity conditions; while in high viscosity conditions, it displayed excellent photothermal performance, reaching a surface temperature of 85 °C under 1 sunlight, reducing crude oil absorption time from 42 min to 60 s (97.6 %-time savings). Moreover, it facilitated continuous crude oil spill recovery under sunlight with an adsorption rate of 3.3 × 104 kg m-3 h-1. The SCC aerogel presents a potential route for utilizing solar energy in crude oil adsorption applications without additional environmental burden.

Abstract
Super-wetting interface materials have shown great potential for applications in oil-water separation. Hydrogel-based materials, in particular, have been extensively studied for separating water from oily wastewater due to their unique hydrophilicity and excellent anti-oil effect. In this study, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic bamboo cellulose hydrogel-coated mesh was fabricated using a feasible and eco-friendly dip-coating method. The process involved dissolving bamboo cellulose in a green alkaline/urea aqueous solvent system, followed by regeneration in ethanol solvent, without the addition of surface modifiers. The resulting membrane exhibited excellent special wettability, with superhydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity, enabling oil-water separation through a gravity-driven "water-removing" mode. The super-wetting composite membrane demonstrated a high separation efficiency of higher than 98% and a permeate flux of up to 9168 L·m-2·h-1 for numerous oil/water mixtures. It also maintained a separation efficiency of >95% even after 10 cycles of separation, indicating its long-term stability. This study presents a green, simple, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly approach for fabricating superhydrophilic surfaces to achieve oil-water separation. It also highlights the potential of bamboo-based materials in the field of oil-water separation.

Abstract
Owing to the limitation of their wettability and pore size, lab filter membrane could not separate oil/water emulsions. Herein, we present surface modification of commercial membranes with chitosan/nanocellulose coatings via a spray-assisted layer-by-layer (LBL) assembly technology. By alternate spraying chitosan (CS) solution and TEMPO-oxidized tunicate cellulose nanofiber (TCNF) suspension, (CS/TCNF)n multilayers were obtained, where n denotes the number of bilayers. The (CS/TCNF)6 coated membrane possessed superhydrophilicity, underwater superoleophobicity, and outperforming anti-oil-fouling properties, which could effectively separate various oil-in-water emulsions. Importantly, the (CS/TCNF)6 coated membrane not only had stable permeate flux with nearly 100 % recovery ratio for the separation of pump oil-in-water emulsion, but also exhibited good harsh-environment-tolerant property. This work provided a novel strategy for designing and preparing stable anti-oil-fouling membranes for oily wastewater treatment.

Abstract
3D felt materials with pore structures have the advantages of high absorption performance and recyclability in oily wastewater treatment and chemical leakage. However, most of them were fabricated using either toxic organic solvents or complicated procedures. Herein, we report a facile, green, and scalable route for the fabrication of 3D composite felts with large pore structures by sequentially stirring and heating polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibers and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). The resulting PET-PVDF felt exhibits high oil absorption capacity to a variety of oil and organic solvents with a maximum saturated absorption capacity of 32 g/g. Additionally, it can be used to separate oil/water mixtures with a separation efficiency of 99.9% and separation flux of 89570 L m-2 h-1. Moreover, this felt shows excellent mechanical durability and chemical stability under acid, base, salt solution, and other harsh environments. The current study provides a promising approach for large-scale industrial oily wastewater separation.

Abstract
The scarcity of fresh water resources has become increasingly serious in recent years, posing threats to the survival of mankind. The ability of the animals and plants in arid areas to collect water from moisture and fog has drawn attention worldwide. Inspired by the synergistic fog harvesting mode of natural organisms with superhydrophilic and superhydrophobic patterning, a composite membrane with a concave-convex morphology and hybrid wettability was prepared aiming at efficient fog harvesting. The hybrid wettability surface was obtained by chemically modifying the superhydrophilic PAN substrate with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltrichlorosilane using iron mesh as the mask. The porous PAN substrate was prepared by the non-solvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method. Fog harvesting is a three-step process: condensation, coalescence, and rapid transportation of water droplets. The area and ratio of the hydrophilic/hydrophobic regions were tuned by adjusting the mesh number of the iron meshes. Under the optimal condition, the fog harvesting efficiencies of 40.3 and 74.2 mg·cm-2·min-1 were obtained when the fog yields were 0.05 and 0.1 L·min-1, respectively. The present work provides an alternative strategy for addressing the shortage of fresh water resources.

Abstract
Engineering surfaces or membranes that allow an efficient oil/water separation is highly desired in a wide spectrum of applications ranging from oily wastewater discharge to offshore oil spill accidents. Recent advances in biomimetics, manufacturing, and characterization techniques have led to remarkable progress in the design of various superwetting materials with special wettability. In spite of exciting progress, formulating a strategy robust enough to guide the design and fabrication of separating surfaces remains a daunting challenge. In this review, we first present an overview of the wettability theory to elucidate how to control the surface morphology and chemistry to regulate oil/water separation. Then, parallel approaches are considered for discussing the separation mechanisms according to different oil/water mixtures, and three separation types were identified including filtration, adsorption and other separation types. Finally, perspectives on the challenges and future research directions in this research area are briefly discussed.

Abstract
Since superwetting surfaces have emerged, on-demand oil/water separation materials serve as a new direction for meeting practical needs. This new separation mode uses a single porous material to allow oil-removing and water-removing to be achieved alternately. In this review, the fundamentals of wettability are systematically summarized in oil/water separation. Most importantly, the two states, bioinspired surface and intelligent surface, are summarized for on-demand oil/water separation. Specifically, bioinspired surfaces include micro/nanostructures, bioinspired chemistry, Janus-featured surfaces, and dual-superlyophobic surfaces that these superwetting materials can possess asymmetric wettability in one structure system or opposite underliquid wettability by prewetting. Furthermore, an intelligent surface can be adopted by various triggers such as pH, thermal and photo stimuli, etc., to control wettability for switchable oil/water separation reversibly, expressing a thought beyond nature to realize innovative oil/water separation by external stimuli. Remarkably, this review also discusses the advantages of all the materials mentioned above, expanding the separation scope from the on-demand oil/water mixtures to the multiphase immiscible liquid-liquid mixtures. Finally, the prospects of on-demand oil/water separation materials are also concluded.

However, the majority of works on anti-fouling membranes mainly focused on low-viscosity oils, which greatly limited the development and application of a membrane to face the real crude oil wastewater. Inspired by the hydrophilicity of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and zirconium base metal-organic frame (Zr-MOF), an anti-oil-fouling CMC/UiO-66-NH2 composite membrane was constructed by a self-assembly method. Profiting from the hydrophilicity and micro-nanostructure of the CMC/UiO-66-NH2 layer, the obtained CMC/UiO-66-NH2 membranes displayed underwater superoleophobicity and desired oil resistance. It could display the effective separation capability with 1282 ± 62 to 6160 ± 81 L/(m2·h·bar) and above 99.08% toward the different light oil emulsions. More importantly, the CMC/UiO-66-NH2 membrane displayed ultralow crude oil adhesion behaviors toward the crude oil emulsions, which could achieve a considerably high flux (746 ± 60 to 5224 ± 87 L/(m2·h·bar)). Furthermore, electrostatic interaction and physical enwinding-wrapping between CMC and UiO-66-NH2 also endowed the composite membranes with outstanding stability. After immersing the as-prepared membranes into the harsh environments for 24 h, the membranes still maintained high underwater-oil contact angles (UWOCA > 155°) and separation ability (oil rejection was above 99.0%). Therefore, CMC/UiO-66-NH2 composite membranes could demonstrate promising prospects in real oily emulsion treatment.

Abstract
Ionic polymer nanoparticles (IPNs) were synthesized in one pot by quaternization precipitation polymerization (QPP) as a novel polymerization technique. QPP eliminated the usage of high-cost ionic monomers and reduced the number of steps for the preparation of IPN. The monomers 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and 4-vinylbenzyl chloride (VBC) polymerized in the presence of azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) and underwent quaternization simultaneously, which yielded ionic poly(DMAEMA-co-VBC) nanoparticles in one step with the size of 50-80 nm without any stabilizer and catalyst. Similarly, 4-vinylpyridine (VP) and VBC polymerized in the presence of AIBN and underwent quaternization simultaneously, which yielded ionic poly(VP-co-VBC) nanoparticles in one step with the size of 70-90 nm without any stabilizer and catalyst. The as-synthesized IPN was further utilized for the fabrication of hydrophilic nanocomposite ultrafiltration membranes for oil/water separation. Fabricated hybrid membranes were characterized and studied for oil rejection properties. It exhibited an oil rejection of >96% with a pure water permeability of 219 L/m2 h bar.

Abstract
Janus materials are anisotropic nano- and microarchitectures with two different faces consisting of distinguishable or opposite physicochemical properties. In parallel with the discovery of new methods for the fabrication of these materials, decisive progress has been made in their application, for example, in biological science, catalysis, pharmaceuticals, and, more recently, in battery technology. This Minireview systematically covers recent and significant achievements in the application of task-specific Janus nanomaterials as heterogeneous catalysts in various types of chemical reactions, including reduction, oxidative desulfurization and dye degradation, asymmetric catalysis, biomass transformation, cascade reactions, oxidation, transition-metal-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions, electro- and photocatalytic reactions, as well as gas-phase reactions. Finally, an outlook on possible future applications is given.
