Optimized Polymeric Membranes for Water Treatment: Fabrication, Morphology, and Performance

Conventional polymers, endowed with specific functionalities, are extensively utilized for filtering and extracting a diverse set of chemicals, notably metals, from solutions. The main structure of a polymer is an integral part for designing an efficient separating system. However, its chemical functionality further contributes to the selectivity, fabrication process, and resulting product morphology. One example would be a membrane that can be employed to selectively remove a targeted metal ion or chemical from a solution, leaving behind the useful components of the solution. Such membranes or products are highly sought after for purifying polluted water contaminated with toxic and heavy metals. An efficient water-purifying membrane must fulfill several requirements, including a specific morphology attained by the material with a specific chemical functionality and facile fabrication for integration into a purifying module Therefore, the selection of an appropriate polymer and its functionalization become crucial and determining steps. This review highlights the attempts made in functionalizing various polymers (including natural ones) or copolymers with chemical groups decisive for membranes to act as water purifiers. Among these recently developed membrane systems, some of the materials incorporating other macromolecules, e.g., MOFs, COFs, and graphene, have displayed their competence for water treatment. Furthermore, it also summarizes the self-assembly and resulting morphology of the membrane materials as critical for driving the purification mechanism. This comprehensive overview aims to provide readers with a concise and conclusive understanding of these materials for water purification, as well as elucidating further perspectives and challenges.

Reusable Floating Spherical Hydrogel Evaporator for Solar Desalination with Salt Mitigation and Contaminant Elimination

The generation of clean and drinkable fresh water from seawater and contaminated water holds great potential to mitigate water scarcity. Herein, a floating spherical hydrogel evaporator (SHE) is designed to achieve sunlight-driven desalination, self-salt cleaning, and removal of environmental contaminants. The spherical lightweight polystyrene is coated with a porous carbon-embedded sodium alginate/PVA/CMC photothermal hydrogel to generate a spherical hydrogel evaporator (SHE) that floats naturally. The SHE is very sensitive to the weight imbalance (500 mg) and can respond quickly to the accumulation of salt by rotation to the fresh evaporation surface, realizing excellent antisalt fouling performance. Remarkably, with energy localization by porous carbon, the spherical floating evaporator achieved a high evaporation rate of 2.65 kg m-2 h-1 with an evaporation efficiency of 98%. At the same time, SHE is also capable of adsorbing both organic contaminants and heavy metal ions through functional groups of the hydrogel, attaining 99% removal efficiency. Overall, this low-cost spherical floating evaporator may offer solution for eco-friendly and sustainable production of fresh water on a large scale.

Electrospun membranes of carboxylated poly(ester urethane)urea/gelatin encapsulating pterostilbene for adaptive and antioxidative purposes

Oxidative stress caused by the harsh microenvironment after implantation of an artificial graft with mismatching mechanical properties usually triggers inflammation responses, which have adverse impacts on tissue regeneration. For coping with these problems, in this work, bioactive fibrous scaffolds were developed from specially synthesized carboxylated poly(ester urethane)urea (PEUU) and gelatin (Gel) by encapsulating pterostilbene (Pte) for the first time. The prepared electrospun membranes exhibited self-adaptable mechanical properties with high elasticity owing to the bonded electrospun fibers, cross-linking network between PEUU and Gel, and the inherent flexibility of the PEUU polymer in the fibrous matrix. The PEUU/Gel/Pte electrospun membrane containing 7% Pte could promote in vitro proliferation of human umbilical vein endothelial cells, and regulate vascular smooth muscle cells with excellent antioxidant properties via free radical scavenging. In vivo results in a rat subcutaneous implantation model further demonstrated the positive effect of the specially prepared PEUU/Gel/Pte scaffold on both normal cell growth and anti-inflammatory by promoting cellularization and polarizing macrophages toward the M2 phenotype. These PEUU/Gel/Pte electrospun membranes with adaptability benefit to tissue regeneration by modulating inflammation responses, especially applications in vascular regeneration.

Electro Fluid Dynamics: A Route to Design Polymers and Composites for Biomedical and Bio-Sustainable Applications

In the last two decades, several processes have been explored for the development of micro and/or nanostructured substrates by sagely physically and/or chemically manipulating polymer materials. These processes have to be designed to overcome some of the limitations of the traditional ones in terms of feasibility, reproducibility, and sustainability. Herein, the primary aim of this work is to focus on the enormous potential of using a high voltage electric field to manipulate polymers from synthetic and/or natural sources for the fabrication of different devices based on elementary units, i.e., fibers or particles, with different characteristic sizes—from micro to nanoscale. Firstly, basic principles and working mechanisms will be introduced in order to correlate the effect of selected process parameters (i.e., an applied voltage) on the dimensional features of the structures. Secondly, a comprehensive overview of the recent trends and potential uses of these processes will be proposed for different biomedical and bio-sustainable application areas.
