One-Year Water-Stable and Porous Bi(III) Halide Semiconductor with Broad-Spectrum Antibacterial Performance

When Pore Met Semi: Charting the Rise of Porous Metal Halide Semiconductors

Metal halide semiconductors (MHS) are a versatile class of materials with fully customizable mechanical and optoelectronic properties that have proven to be prominent candidates in numerous impactful applications. Finding a way to generate porosity in MHS would bestow upon them an additional node in property engineering, thus allowing them to be utilized in uncharted technologies. Motivated by this promise, we developed a general strategy to render the MHS porous. We employed molecular cages as structure-directing agents and countercations, which fostered a new family of materials: porous metal halide semiconductors (PMHS). The presence of molecular cages gave rise to ultramicroporous structures imposed by the organic part cavities and a record water stability performance of 27 months so far. In this Perspective, we discuss the principles and promises of PMHS, which combine the merits of porous and electronic compounds.

Leveraging ordered voids in microporous perovskites for intercalation and post-synthetic modification

We report the use of porous organic layers in two-dimensional hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites (HOIPs) to facilitate permanent small molecule intercalation and new post-synthetic modifications. While HOIPs are well-studied for a variety of optoelectronic applications, the ability to manipulate their structure after synthesis is another handle for control of physical properties and could even enable use in future applications. If designed properly, a porous interlayer could facilitate these post-synthetic transformations. We show that for a series of copper-halide perovskites, a crystalline arrangement of designer ammonium groups allows for permanently porous interlayer space to be accessed at room temperature. Intercalation of the electroactive molecules ferrocene and tetracyanoethylene into this void space can be performed with tunable loadings, and these intercalated perovskites are stable for months. The porosity also enables reactivity at the copper-halide layer, allowing for facile halide replacement. Through this, we access previously unobserved reactivity with halogens to perform halide substitution, and even replace halides with pseudohalides. In the latter case, the porous structure allows for stabilization of new phases, specifically a novel copper-thiocyanate perovskite phase, only accessible through post-synthetic modification. We envision that this broad design strategy can be expanded to other industrially relevant HOIPs to create a new class of highly adjustable perovskites.

A Synergistic Antibacterial Study of Copper-Doped Polydopamine on Ti3C2Tx Nanosheets with Enhanced Photothermal and Fenton-like Activities

In response to the trend of drug-resistant and super bacteria, the existing single antibacterial methods are not sufficient to kill bacteria, and the development of multifunctional antibacterial nanomaterials is urgent. Our study aims to construct copper-doped polydopamine-coated Ti3C2Tx (CuPDA@Ti3C2Tx) with an enhanced photothermal property and Fenton-like activity. The nanocomposite hydrogel consisting of CuPDA@Ti3C2Tx and alginate can improve the antioxidant activity of two-dimensional MXene nanosheets by coating them with a thin layer of PDA nanofilm. Meanwhile, Cu ions are adsorbed through the coordination of PDA-rich oxygen-containing functional groups and amino groups. Calcium ions were further used to crosslink sodium alginate to obtain antibacterial hydrogel materials with combined chemotherapy and photothermal therapy properties. The photothermal conversion efficiency of CuPDA@Ti3C2Tx is as high as 57.7% and the antibacterial rate of Escherichia coli reaches 96.12%. The photothermal effect leads to oxidative stress in bacteria, increases cell membrane permeability, and a high amount of ROS and copper ions enter the interior of the bacteria, causing protein denaturation and DNA damage, synergistically leading to bacterial death. Our study involves a multifunctional synergistic antibacterial nanodrug platform, which is conducive to the development of high-performance antibacterial agents and provides important research ideas for solving the problem of drug-resistant bacteria.
