An Ambipolar BODIPY Derivative for a White Exciplex OLED and Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Laser toward Multifunctional Devices

Combined DFT and QM/MM Modeling on Multifunctional TADF Sensitizers and Hot-Exciton Emitters via Carborane Triads for Blue Hyperfluorescent OLEDs

The scarcity of novel luminogens significantly impedes the advancement of TADF sensitizers and hot exciton emitters, attracting considerable attention for their potential to enhance energy conversion efficiencies in hyperfluorescent OLEDs. In this study, a systematic investigation is employed to design and develop multifunctional materials based on carborane cores through DFT and TD-DFT methods. In pursuit of this objective, 45 carborane triad-type molecules were systematically designed using four donors and two acceptor units. Electronic structure calculations revealed that (i) the singlet, triplet, ΔEST, and SOC values exhibit an increased trend as the carborane core shifts from ortho to meta to para, while an increase in donor strength on the core leads to a decrease in these values. (ii) Moreover, there is a decrease in reorganization energies, absorption wavelengths, ISC, and RISC rates as the carborane switches from ortho to meta to para while witnessing an increase in donor strength. The QM/MM study reveals that para carborane's restricted intramolecular motions improve its solid-state aggregation over ortho carborane and solution phases. Interestingly, carborane triads featuring P-DMB and P-BODIPY acceptor units satisfy the desired criteria for multifunctional TADF sensitizers and hot exciton emitters, respectively.

BODIPY-Based Molecules for Biomedical Applications

BODIPY (4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene) derivatives have attracted attention as probes in applications like imaging and sensing due to their unique properties like (1) strong absorption and emission in the visible and near-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, (2) strong fluorescence and (3) supreme photostability. They have also been employed in areas like photodynamic therapy. Over the last decade, BODIPY-based molecules have even emerged as candidates for cancer treatments. Cancer remains a significant health issue world-wide, necessitating a continuing search for novel therapeutic options. BODIPY is a flexible fluorophore with distinct photophysical characteristics and is a fascinating drug development platform. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the most recent breakthroughs in BODIPY-based small molecules for cancer or disease detection and therapy, including their functional potential.

Anthracene-Fused Oligo-BODIPYs: A New Class of π-Extended NIR-Absorbing Materials

Large π-conjugated systems are key in the area of molecular materials. Herein, we prepare via Au^I -catalyzed cyclization a series of fully π-conjugated anthracene-fused oligo-BODIPYs. Their structural and optoelectronic properties were studied by several techniques, ranging from X-ray, UV/Vis, and cyclic voltammetry to transient absorption spectroscopy. As a complement, their electronic structures were explored by means of Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations. Depending on the size and shape of the π-conjugated skeleton, unique features-such as face-to-face supramolecular organization, NIR absorption and fluorescence as well as strong electron accepting character-were noted. All in all, the aforementioned features render them valuable for technological applications.

Aryl/Heteroaryl Substituted Boron-Difluoride Complexes Bearing 2-(Isoquinol-1-yl)pyrrole Ligands Exhibiting High Luminescence Efficiency with a Large Stokes Shift

A series of 2-(isoquinol-1-yl)pyrrole-boron complexes possessing (hetero)aryl substituents on the pyrrole and/or isoquinoline moiety were prepared. These compounds exhibited the fluorescence emission character in both solution and solid state. In most cases, the large Stokes shift and high fluorescence quantum yield in the solution were compatible. Furthermore, the structural diversity allowed the precise tuning of emitting colors from light blue to red with strong emission intensity. The present paper describes their comprehensive optical characteristics dependent on the type and position of the substituted aryl groups by the experimental and computational studies.

Application of meso-CF3-Fluorophore BODIPY with Phenyl and Pyrazolyl Substituents for Lifetime Visualization of Lysosomes

A bright far-red emitting unsymmetrical meso-CF₃-BODIPY fluorescent dye with phenyl and pyrazolyl substituents was synthesized by condensation of trifluoropyrrolylethanol with pyrazolyl-pyrrole, with subsequent oxidation and complexation of the formed dipyrromethane. This BODIPY dye exhibits optical absorption at λ_ab ≈ 610-620 nm and emission at λ_em ≈ 640-650 nm. The BODIPY was studied on Ehrlich carcinoma cells as a lysosome-specific fluorescent dye that allows intravital staining of cell structures with subsequent real-time monitoring of changes occurring in the cells. It was also shown that the rate of uptake by cells, the rate of intracellular transport into lysosomes, and the rate of saturation of cells with the dye depend on its concentration in the culture medium. A concentration of 5 μM was chosen as the most suitable BODIPY concentration for fluorescent staining of living cell lysosomes, while a concentration of 100 μM was found to be toxic to Ehrlich carcinoma cells.

Electronic transitions in noncovalent BODIPY dimers: TD-DFT study

Theoretical computations have been performed on the absorption spectra of (8-R-TMB)₂ dimers with varying character of substituents at the 8 position (meso) at monomers units (R = NH₂, OH, CH₃, H, COH, CF₃, CN). The obtained results (TD-CAM-B3LYP) show that the first four lower transitions of studied dimers (S₀ → S_i, i = 1-4) are intrinsically linked with delocalized HOMO and LUMO orbitals of the two monomers, which constitute a dimer. For all the dimers, S₀ → S₁ and S₀ → S₃ transitions are strongly forbidden, whereas S₀ → S₂ and S₀ → S₄ are allowed. There is a good agreement between the TD-CAM-B3LYP theory and the simple model of exciton coupling for two identical chromophores with the planes of two moieties, which are stacked upon each other. Intensities of the allowed transitions depend strongly on the nature of the substituent at the meso position. For the dimers with monomer units bearing electron-donor groups, S₀ → S₂ transitions are more intense compared with S₀ → S₄ ones. As the donor properties of the meso substituents diminish and electron acceptor properties enlarge, the intensity of these transitions becomes lower, whereas that of S₀ → S₄ transitions becomes higher. For the dimers with NH₂ and CN substituents, the almost inverse ratio of intensities of the transitions discussed is observed (for example, f = 0.80 and 0.06 (in the case of NH₂) and f = 0.09 and 0.72 (CN) for S₀ → S₂ and S₀ → S₄, respectively). Protonation of the tertiary amine function drastically 'switches off' its electron-donating properties. As a result, the red shift of the bands and redistribution of intensities of the allowed S₀ → S₂ and S₀ → S₄ transitions is predicted for protonated forms of the (8-NH₂-TMB)₂ dimer. This peculiarity can be of especial importance for the design of dimers with a sensor function.

Rotor-Tuning Boron Dipyrromethenes for Dual-Functional Imaging of Aβ Oligomers and Viscosity

Alzheimer's disease (AD), known as a common incurable and elderly neurodegenerative disease, has been widely explored for accurate detection of its biomarker (Aβ oligomers) for early diagnosis. Although great efforts have been made, it is still of great importance to develop fluorescence probes for Aβ oligomers with good selectivity and low background. Herein, starting from BODIPY493/503 (a commercial dye for neutral lipid droplets), which exhibited a small Stokes shift and no response toward Aβ peptides, two fluorescence probes 5MB-SZ and B-SZ with a benzothiazole rotor at the 2-position of the BODIPY core and a methyl or benzyl group at the meso position have been designed and synthesized, which exhibited excellent optical properties/stability and could successfully image β-amyloid fibrils and viscosity. Upon exposure to Aβ oligomers, the fluorescence intensity of 5MB-SZ was enhanced by 43.64-fold with the corresponding fluorescence quantum yields changing from 0.85% to 27.43%. Meanwhile, probe 5MB-SZ showed a highly sensitive viscosity response in both solutions and living cells. In vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed that probe 5MB-SZ exhibited an excellent capacity for imaging β-amyloid fibrils. Therefore, 5MB-SZ, as a rotor-tuning BODIPY analogue, could possibly serve as a highly potential and powerful fluorescence probe for early diagnosis of AD.

One-Pot Access to Ethylene-Bridged BODIPY Dimers and Trimers through Single-Electron Transfer Chemistry

A Cu(I)-promoted oxidative dimerization of BODIPY dyes was developed to give a series of α,α- ethylene-bridged BODIPY dimers and trimers for the first time. This methodology does not need harsh conditions but relies on the singlet-electron-transfer process between alkylated BODIPYs and Cu(I) salt to generate BODIPY-based radical species, which undergo a selective radical homocoupling reaction. Moreover, these resultant dimers and trimers showed high attenuation coefficients, small line widths of the absorption and emission, and intense fluorescence.

BODIPY trimer with 1,3,5-triazine core: Facile synthesis and crystal structure

Trimerization reaction of 8-(4[Formula: see text]-cyanophenyl)-1,3,5,7-tetramethyl-4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (CN-BODIPY) led to the isolation of a new triazine-based BODIPY trimer 2,4,6-tris(8[Formula: see text]-phenyl-1[Formula: see text],3[Formula: see text],5[Formula: see text],7[Formula: see text]-tetramethyl-4[Formula: see text],4[Formula: see text]-difluoro-4[Formula: see text]-bora-3a[Formula: see text],4a[Formula: see text]-diaza-s-indacene)-1,3,5-triazine (1). This BODIPY trimer 1 have been characterized by a series of spectroscopic methods including MALDI-TOF mass, 1H NMR, electronic absorption, IR and fluorescence spectroscopy. In particular, the single crystals of 1 have be obtained by slow diffusion of methanol into the solution of this compound in CHCl3. The BODIPY trimer structure of 1 with a triazine core has been directly revealed on the basis of single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis with the intermolecular interactions investigated by Hirshfeld surface analysis. This work will be helpful for the design and synthesis of new multiple BODIPY derivatives with various application.

Aromatic [b]-fused BODIPY dyes as promising near-infrared dyes

Far-red and near-infrared (NIR) absorbing/emitting dyes have found diverse applications in biomedicine and material science. However, the absorption and emission of classical BODIPY chromophores at short wavelength hamper their applications. Several strategies have been adopted to modify the structure of the BODIPY core to design NIR dyes. Among these, the most efficient approach to expand the π-conjugation of the BODIPY core is via fusion of aromatic rings. So far, many novel BODIPY skeletons fused to aromatic hydrocarbons and heterocycles at the b bond have been reported. This review comprehensively describes the recent advances regarding the development of aromatic [b]-fused BODIPY dyes with the focus on the design and synthesis, the relationships between their photophysical/spectroscopic properties and molecular structures, and the potential applications in bioassays and optoelectronic devices.

Long-Persistent Luminescence from an Exciplex-Based Organic Light-Emitting Diode

Organic long-persistent luminescent systems (OLPLs) exhibiting long-lasting emission after photoexcitation consist of organic electron donors and acceptors, that are widely used in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Although OLPLs and OLEDs include very similar excitonic processes, long-lasting emission has never been observed in OLEDs. This study confirms the presence of long-persistent luminescence (LPL) under electrical excitation.

Fabrication and Characterisation of Organic EL Devices in the Presence of Cyclodextrin as an Interlayer

This study examined glass-based organic electroluminescence in the presence of a cyclodextrin polymer as an interlayer. Glass-based organic electroluminescence was achieved by the deposition of five layers of N,N'-Bis(3-methylphenyl)N,N'-bis(phenyl)-benzidine, cyclodextrin polymer (CDP), tris-(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminium LiF and Al on an indium tin oxide-coated glass substrate. The glass-based OEL exhibited green emission owing to the fluorescence of tris-(8-hydroxyquinolinato) aluminium. The highest luminance was 19,620 cd m-2. Moreover, the glass-based organic electroluminescence device showed green emission at 6 V in the curved state because of the inhibited aggregation of the cyclodextrin polymer. All organic molecules are insulating, but except CDP, they are standard molecules in conventional organic electroluminescence devices. In this device, the CDP layer contained pores that could allow conventional organic molecules to enter the pores and affect the organic electroluminescence interface. In particular, self-association was suppressed, efficiency was improved, and light emission was observed without the need for a high voltage. Overall, the glass-based organic electroluminescence device using CDP is an environmentally friendly device with a range of potential energy saving applications.

Theoretical predictions of the spectroscopic properties of BODIPY dyes: Effects of the fused aromatic and heteroaromatic rings at the b, g bonds

The fusion of aryl and heteroaryl moieties in the BODIPY skeleton is the important route to design BODIPYs exhibiting absorption and fluorescence in red or near infra-red regions. Despite the importance of this approach, little is known about the influence of aryl and heteroaryl rings on the position of the energy levels of the lower electronic states of such dyes. In this paper, the influence of benzene (B), thiophene (T) and furan (F) rings fused in the BODIPY core (b) at both b and g bonds on the optical properties of the symmetric BbB, TbT and FbF and asymmetric TbF, BbF and BbT dyes have been investigated by TD-CAM-B3LYP and RI-CC2 calculations. We have shown that in contrast to the locally excited (LE0-type) main vertical state, energy of which is nearly the same for all the substituents at the b and g bonds, energy of the next two states of the LE1- and LE2-type for the symmetric dyes or the charge transfer (CT1- and CT2-type) for the asymmetric dyes depends strongly on the nature of the rings at the b and g bonds. The benzene-fused dyes (BbF, BbT, BbB) have the lowest energy of the excited levels of the LE-type (or CT1-type) states, and inversion with LE0-type levels occurs. As a result, the dramatic decrease of the fluorescence quantum yield is expected in these cases. The identification of these effects provides a quality framework for understanding of how fused substituents regulate photophysical processes of BODIPYs.

Thermally activated delayed fluorescence exciplex emitters for high-performance organic light-emitting diodes

Owing to their natural thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) characteristics, the development of exciplex emitters for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) has witnessed booming progress in recent years. Formed between electron-donating and electron-accepting molecules, exciplexes with intermolecular charge transfer processes have unique advantages compared with unimolecular TADF materials, offering a new way to develop high-performance TADF emitters. In this review, a comprehensive overview of TADF exciplex emitters is presented with a focus on the relationship between the constituents of exciplexes and their electroluminescence performance. We summarize and discuss the latest and most significant developments of TADF exciplex emitters. Notably, the design principles of efficient TADF exciplex emitters are systematically categorized into three systems within this review. These progressive achievements of TADF exciplex emitters point out future challenges to trigger more research endeavors in this growing field.

Extended Benzene-Fused Oligo-BODIPYs: In Three Steps to a Series of Large, Arc-Shaped, Near-Infrared Dyes

We present a straightforward, three-step synthesis engaging an oligomerization and subsequent one-pot oxidation step to form fully conjugated, benzene-fused oligo-BODIPYs from simple BODIPY precursors. FeCl3 serves as an efficient, bifunctional oxidant for a (multiple) cyclization/desaturation process, applied to ethylene-bridged dimeric, trimeric and oligomeric species to transform linking ethano units into stiff benzene fusions between unsubstituted β-positions of each BODIPY unit. The structural integrity was verified by X-ray crystallography, and all target compounds were studied in detail by photophysical, electrochemical and computational means. The main S1 excited state gradually converges to a structure-specific excitation limit, displaying a strong shift of the absorption event from about 500 nm (BODIPY monomer) to 955 nm (octamer) with attenuation coefficients up to ca. 500 000 M-1  cm-1 .

Two-photon excitable boron complex based on tridentate imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine ligand for heavy-atom-free mitochondria-targeted photodynamic therapy

We have synthesized a cyan fluorescent boron complex based on a tridentate imidazo[1,5-a]pyridine ligand. The boron complex was found to have potential applications as not only a chiroptical material but also a heavy-atom-free mitochondria-targeted photosensitizer for cancer treatment.

Synthesis and Opto-electronic Properties of BODIPY o-OPhos Systems

Herein, we report the versatile synthetic strategy and opto-electronic properties for the phosphorylation of BODIPY derivatives 5aa-5ak by substituting with an electron-donating/withdrawing group at the ortho position. Nevertheless, this new methodology relatively promotes the tolerance of the aldehyde moiety and the high yield for the synthesis of BODIPY o-OPhos derivatives. The photophysical studies suggest improved optical properties due to the inductive effect of various electron-donating/withdrawing groups. The UV-visible and the emission data suggest that BODIPY o-OPhos derivatives emphasize the property of the excited states with an increase in fluorescence intensity and high quantum yields due to the presence of bulky phospsho-triester at the meso- position which hinders the free rotation around the C-Ar bond and facilitates the development of OLEDs and various organophosphorus warfare agents. Electrochemical studies reveal 5ak depicts the ease of redox activity amongst the 5aa-5ak derivatives. The density functional theory indicates the highest occupied molecular orbital on the BODIPY moiety whereas the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital delocalized on BODIPY and the phospho-triester moieties. Thus, the unique development of the novel BODIPY derivatives with improved optical and redox properties pave the way for fluorescent probes and bioimaging techniques.

Exciplex emissions derived from exceptionally long-distance donor and acceptor molecules

We report exceptionally long-distance coupled exciplex emissions between electron-donor and electron-acceptor molecules even with a 70 nm-thick spacer layer.

Intermolecular electron–hole coupling in organic semiconductor excited states plays important roles in organic light-emitting diodes and organic photovoltaics, and the distance of the coupling is typically only on the order of a few nanometers. Here, we report exceptionally long-distance coupled exciplex emissions between electron-donor and electron-acceptor molecules even with a 70 nm-thick spacer layer. Donor/spacer (∼70 nm)/acceptor-type stacked films showed a low-energy band emission, which is not ascribed to the emission of the donor, spacer, and acceptor themselves, but well corresponds to the energy difference between the highest occupied molecular orbital of the donor and the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of the acceptor. Delayed transient photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence (EL) decays and PL quenching by oxygen at the low-energy band were observed and are consistent with the characteristics of the exciplex species.

Tuning of hyperpolarizability, and one- and two-photon absorption of donor-acceptor and donor-acceptor-acceptor-type intramolecular charge transfer-based sensors

The present work aims to study the effect of solvent as well as arrangement of donor-acceptor groups on linear and non-linear optical (NLO) response properties of two experimentally studied intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT)-based fluorescent sensors. One of them (molecule 1) is a donor-acceptor (D-A) system with hemicyanine and dimethylanilino as electron withdrawing and donating groups, respectively, while the other one (molecule 3) is molecule 1 fused with a boron-dipyrromethene (BODIPY) moiety. BODIPY acts as the electron acceptor group of molecule 2 that as well consists of dimethylanilino as the electron donor. Density functional theory (DFT) as well as time-dependent DFT has been employed to optimize the geometry of the molecules, followed by computation of dipole moment (μ), static first hyperpolarizability (β_total), and one- and two-photon absorption (TPA) strengths. The results reveal that dipole moment as well as total static first hyperpolarizability (β_total) of the studied molecules is dominated by the respective components in the direction of charge transfer. The ratio of vector component of first hyperpolarizability (β_vec) to β_total also supports the unidirectional charge transfer in the studied systems. In molecule 3, which is a donor-acceptor-acceptor (D-A-A)-type system, the BODIPY moiety is found to play a major role in controlling the NLO response over the other acceptor group. Solvents are also found to play an important role in controlling the linear as well as NLO response of the studied systems. A significant increase in the first hyperpolarizability as well as TPA cross-section of the studied molecules is predicted due to an increase in the dielectric constant of the medium. The results presented are expected to provide a clue in tuning the NLO response of many ICT-based chromophores, especially those with D-A-A arrangements.

Recent Developments in Tandem White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Tandem white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) are promising for the lighting and displays field since their current efficiency, external quantum efficiency and lifetime can be strikingly enhanced compared with single-unit devices. In this invited review, we have firstly described fundamental concepts of tandem device architectures and their use in WOLEDs. Then, we have summarized the state-of-the-art strategies to achieve high-performance tandem WOLEDs in recent years. Specifically, we have highlighted the developments in the four types of tandem WOLEDs (i.e., tandem fluorescent WOLEDs, tandem phosphorescent WOLEDs, tandem thermally activated delayed fluorescent WOLEDs, and tandem hybrid WOLEDs). Furthermore, we have introduced doping-free tandem WOLEDs. In the end, we have given an outlook for the future development of tandem WOLEDs.

Structural characterization and optical properties of two copper(i)-iodide BODIPY coordination polymers

BODIPY chromophores with pyridyl or pyrimidinyl substituents exhibit strong solid-state fluorescence which is quenched in CuI coordination polymers.

Doping-Free White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Doping-free white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs) have great potential to the next-generation solid-state lighting and displays due to the excellent properties, such as high efficiency, bright luminance, low power consumption, simplified structure and low cost. In this account, our recent developments on doping-free WOLEDs have been summarized. Firstly, fundamental concepts of doping-free WOLEDs have been described. Then, the effective strategies to develop doping-free WOLEDs have been presented. Particularly, the manipulation of charges and excitons distribution in different kinds of doping-free WOLEDs have been highlighted, including doping-free fluorescent/phosphorescent hybrid WOLEDs, doping-free thermally activated delayed fluorescent WOLEDs and doping-free phosphorescent WOLEDs. In the end, an outlook for the future development of doping-free WOLEDs have been clarified.

BODIPY-Based Semiconducting Materials for Organic Bulk Heterojunction Photovoltaics and Thin-Film Transistors

The rapid emergence of organic (opto)electronics as a promising alternative to conventional (opto)electronics has been achieved through the design and development of novel π-conjugated systems. Among various semiconducting structural platforms, 4,4-difluoro-4-bora-3a,4a-diaza-s-indacene (BODIPY) π-systems have recently attracted attention for use in organic thin-films transistors (OTFTs) and organic photovoltaics (OPVs). This Review article provides an overview of the developments in the past 10 years on the structural design and synthesis of BODIPY-based organic semiconductors and their application in OTFT/OPV devices. The findings summarized and discussed here include the most recent breakthroughs in BODIPYs with record-high charge carrier mobilities and power conversion efficiencies (PCEs). The most up-to-date design rationales and discussions providing a strong understanding of structure-property-function relationships in BODIPY-based semiconductors are presented. Thus, this review is expected to inspire new research for future materials developments/applications in this family of molecules.

Benzo[4,5]thiazolo[3,2- c][1,3,5,2]oxadiazaborinines: Synthesis, Structural, and Photophysical Properties

A family of highly emissive benzo[4,5]thiazolo[3,2- c][1,3,5,2]oxadiazaborinines, conjugated with the donor 4-dimethylaminophenyl group, was designed and synthesized. Their photophysical, both in solution and in the solid state, and structural properties were investigated. The influence of donor and acceptor substituents (R) in the benzothiazole unit on photophysical properties of complexes was found out. The tetrafluorobenzothiazole analogue exhibits nonbonded nuclear spin-spin coupling between fluorines from the BF₂ group and α-fluorine atom at the benzene ring. Additionally, this boron complex demonstrates a comparatively high solid-state fluorescence quantum yield (Φ = 0.34).

Recent Advances of Exciplex-Based White Organic Light-Emitting Diodes

Recently, exciplexes have been actively investigated in white organic light-emitting diodes (WOLEDs), since they can be effectively functioned as (i) fluorescent or thermally activated delayed fluorescent (TADF) emitters; (ii) the hosts of fluorescent, phosphorescent and TADF dopants. By virtue of the unique advantages of exciplexes, high-performance exciplex-based WOLEDs can be achieved. In this invited review, we have firstly described fundamental concepts of exciplexes and their use in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Then, we have concluded the primary strategies to develop exciplex-based WOLEDs. Specifically, we have emphasized the representative WOLEDs using exciplex emitters or hosts. In the end, we have given an outlook for the future development of exciplex-based WOLEDs.
