Atomic Layer Deposition of Ruthenium Nanoparticles on Electrospun Carbon Nanofibers: A Highly Efficient Nanocatalyst for the Hydrolytic Dehydrogenation of Methylamine Borane

Multicomponent Composite Membrane with Three-Phase Interface Heterostructure as Photocatalyst for Organic Dye Removal

A multicomponent composite membrane (P-S-T/C) with three-phase interface heterostructure is ingeniously designed. A polydopamine (PDA)-modified conductive carbon fiber cloth (C_FC) is used as the substrate. Activated poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with titanium dioxide (TiO₂) and a silicon dioxide (SiO₂) aerogel are electrospun as the top layer. The three-phase interface heterostructure was formed by TiO₂, conductive C_FC, and the SiO₂ aerogel. Its photocatalytic performance is validated by photodegradation of organic dyes in a low-oxygen (O₂) water environment. On combining with the capillary condensation of a bilayer structure, P-S-T/C exhibits excellent removal capability for anionic and cationic dyes. Moreover, P-S-T/C exhibits excellent stability and recyclability under simulated sunlight. The mechanism study indicates that the separated photogenerated carriers diffuse to the composite membrane surface rapidly on the three-phase interface of P-S-T/C. The abundant O₂ adsorbed on the porous SiO₂ aerogel surface acts as an electron (e^-)-trapping agent, which can also decrease the work function of the composite materials. Superoxide radicals (^•O₂ ^-) play a dominant role in the reaction of photodegradation supported by a free radical-trapping experiment. This work paves a way to design a membrane with photocatalytic performance by constructing the interface heterostructure.

Preparation of a Photosensitive Composite Carbon Fiber for Spilled Oil Cleaning

This paper deals with preparing a functional composite carbon fiber with a large surface area for spilled oil cleaning. The composite fiber consisted of photosensitive oxide particles and polymer-derived carbon. It was made by co-spinning the polymer and metallic compounds. After heat treatment at high temperatures, an activated carbon fiber containing oxide particles was obtained. The particles were found distributed in the fiber and at the surface of the fiber. The composite fiber was found sensitive to sunlight. Fiber mats made of the composite fiber possessed a high surface area for oil absorption and removal. Cobalt(II) titanate particles were obtained from the reaction of titanium dioxide and cobalt oxide. The reaction happened in situ through the hydrolysis of metallic compounds in the spun fiber. The titanium dioxide and cobalt(II) titanate particle-containing fibers demonstrated the photoactivity in the visible light spectrum. It was concluded that particle-containing composite carbon fiber mats can be prepared successfully by co-electrospinning. Due to the oleophilic property and the high active surface area, the composites are suitable for spilled oil cleaning through fast absorption.

The Hydrogen-Storage Challenge: Nanoparticles for Metal-Catalyzed Ammonia Borane Dehydrogenation

Dihydrogen is one of the sustainable energy vectors envisioned for the future. However, the rapidly reversible and secure storage of large quantities of hydrogen is still a technological and scientific challenge. In this context, this review proposes a recent state-of-the-art on H₂ production capacities from the dehydrogenation reaction of ammonia borane (and selected related amine-boranes) as a safer solid source of H₂ by hydrolysis (or solvolysis), catalyzed by nanoparticle-based systems. The review groups the results according to the transition metals constituting the catalyst with a mention to their current cost and availability. This includes the noble metals Rh, Pd, Pt, Ru, Ag, as well as cheaper Co, Ni, Cu, and Fe. For each element, the monometallic and polymetallic structures are presented and the performances are described in terms of turnover frequency and recyclability. The structure-property links are highlighted whenever possible. It appears from all these works that the mastery of the preparation of catalysts remains a crucial point both in terms of process, and control and understanding of the electronic structures of the elaborated nanomaterials. A particular effort of the scientific community remains to be made in this multidisciplinary field with major societal stakes.

Mechanistic Insight into the Synergetic Interaction of Ammonia Borane and Water on ZIF-67-Derived Co@Porous Carbon for Controlled Generation of Dihydrogen

Regarding dihydrogen as a clean and renewable energy source, ammonia borane (NH₃BH₃, AB) was considered as a chemical H₂-storage and H₂-delivery material due to its high storage capacity of dihydrogen (19.6 wt %) and stability at room temperature. To advance the development of efficient and recyclable catalysts for hydrolytic dehydrogenation of AB with parallel insight into the reaction mechanism, herein, ZIF-67-derived fcc-Co@porous carbon nano/microparticles (cZIF-67_nm/cZIF-67_μm) were explored to promote catalytic dehydrogenation of AB and generation of H_2(g). According to kinetic and computational studies, zero-order dependence on the concentration of AB, first-order dependence on the concentration of cZIF-67_nm (or cZIF-67_μm), and a kinetic isotope effect value of 2.45 (or 2.64) for H₂O/D₂O identify the Co-catalyzed cleavage of the H-OH bond, instead of the H-BH₂NH₃ bond, as the rate-determining step in the hydrolytic dehydrogenation of AB. Despite the absent evolution of H_2(g) in the reaction of cZIF-67 and AB in the organic solvents (i.e., THF or CH₃OH) or in the reaction of cZIF-67 and water, Co-mediated activation of AB and formation of a Co-H intermediate were evidenced by theoretical calculation, infrared spectroscopy in combination with an isotope-labeling experiment, and reactivity study toward CO₂-to-formate/H₂O-to-H₂ conversion. Moreover, the computational study discovers a synergistic interaction between AB and the water cluster (H₂O)₉ on fcc-Co, which shifts the splitting of water into an exergonic process and lowers the thermodynamic barrier for the generation and desorption of H_2(g) from the Co-H intermediates. With the kinetic and mechanistic study of ZIF-67-derived Co@porous carbon for catalytic hydrolysis of AB, the spatiotemporal control on the generation of H_2(g) for the treatment of inflammatory diseases will be further investigated in the near future.

Focused Patterning of Electrospun Nanofibers Using a Dielectric Guide Structure

The patterning of electrospun fibers is a key technology applicable to various fields. This study reports a novel focused patterning method for electrospun nanofibers that uses a cylindrical dielectric guide. The finite elements method (FEM) was used to analyze the electric field focusing phenomenon and ground its explanation in established theory. The horizontal and vertical electric field strengths in the simulation are shown to be key factors in determining the spatial distribution of nanofibers. The experimental results demonstrate a relationship between the size of the cylindrical dielectric guide and that of the electrospun area accumulated in the collector. By concentrating the electric field, we were able to fabricate a pattern of less than 6 mm. The demonstration of continuous line and square patterning shows that the electrospun area can be well controlled. This novel patterning method can be used in a variety of applications, such as sensors, biomedical devices, batteries, and composites.

Hydrotalcite framework stabilized ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru/HTaL): efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the methanolysis of ammonia-borane

Ruthenium nanoparticles stabilized by a hydrotalcite framework (Ru/HTaL) were prepared by following a 2-step procedure comprising a wet-impregnation of ruthenium(III) chloride precatalyst on the surface of HTaL followed by an ammonia-borane (NH₃BH₃) reduction of precatalyst on the HTaL surface all at room temperature. The characterization of Ru/HTaL was done by using various spectroscopic and visualization methods including ICP-OES, P-XRD, FTIR, ¹¹B NMR, XPS, BFTEM, and HRTEM. The sum of the results gained from these analyses has revealed the formation of well-dispersed and highly crystalline ruthenium nanoparticles with a mean diameter of 1.27 ±0.8 nm on HTaL surface. The catalytic performance of Ru/HTaL in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability was investigated in the methanolysis of ammonia-borane (NH₃BH₃ , AB), which has been considered as one of the most promising chemical hydrogen storage materials. It was found that Ru/HTaL can catalyse methanolysis of AB effectively with an initial turnover frequency (TOF) value of 392.77 min^-1 at conversion (>95%) even at room temperature. Moreover, the catalytic stability tests of Ru/HTaL in AB methanolysis showed that Ru/HTaL acts as a highly stable and reusable heterogeneous catalyst in this reaction by preserving more than 95% of its initial activity even at the 5th recycle.

Recent developments of nanocatalyzed liquid-phase hydrogen generation

Hydrogen is the most effective and sustainable carrier of clean energy, and liquid-phase hydrogen storage materials with high hydrogen content, reversibility and good dehydrogenation kinetics are promising in view of "hydrogen economy". Efficient, low-cost, safe and selective hydrogen generation from chemical storage materials remains challenging, however. In this Review article, an overview of the recent achievements is provided, addressing the topic of nanocatalysis of hydrogen production from liquid-phase hydrogen storage materials including metal-boron hydrides, borane-nitrogen compounds, and liquid organic hydrides. The state-of-the-art catalysts range from high-performance nanocatalysts based on noble and non-noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) to emerging single-atom catalysts. Key aspects that are discussed include insights into the dehydrogenation mechanisms, regenerations from the spent liquid chemical hydrides, and tandem reactions using the in situ generated hydrogen. Finally, challenges, perspectives, and research directions for this area are envisaged.

Printable 3D Carbon Nanofiber Networks with Embedded Metal Nanocatalysts

Carbon nanofiber (CNF) nanocatalyst hybrids hold great promise in fields such as energy storage, synthetic chemistry, and sensors. Current strategies to generate such hybrids are laborious and utterly incompatible with miniaturization and large-scale production. Instead, this work demonstrates that Ni nanoparticles embedded in three-dimensional (3D) CNFs of any shape and design can be easily prepared using electrospinning, followed by laser carbonization under ambient conditions. Specifically, a solution of nickel acetylacetonate /polyimide is electrospun and subsequently a design is printed via CO₂ laser (Ni-laser-induced carbon nanofiber (LCNFs)). This creates uniformly distributed small Ni nanoparticles (∼8 nm) very tightly adhered to the CNF network. Morphological and performance characteristics can be directly influenced by metal content and lasing power and hence adapted for the desired application. Here, Ni-LCNFs are optimized for nonenzymatic electrochemical sensing of glucose with great sensitivity of 2092 μA mM^-1 cm^-2 and a detection limit down to 0.3 μM. Its selectivity for glucose vs interfering species (ascorbic and uric acid) is essentially governed by the Ni content. Most importantly, this strategy can be adapted to a whole range of metal precursors and hence provide opportunities for such 3D CNF-nanocatalyst hybrids in point-of-care applications where high-performance but also sustainable and low-cost fabrications are of utmost importance.

Synthesis of novel catalytic composite nanofibers containing ruthenium nanoparticles stabilized by a citric acid-β-cyclodextrin polymer

The elaboration of catalytic composite nanofibers (NFs) by electrospinning through a one-pot strategy is described. First, aqueous colloidal suspensions of ruthenium nanoparticles (Ru NPs) formed by reduction of a Ru(iii) salt with NaBH₄ and stabilized by poly(cyclodextrin citrate) (PCD) were prepared. Then, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) of different molecular weights was dissolved in the colloidal suspensions that were electrospun. SEM analyses of the resulting nanowebs displayed uniform NFs, whose diameters ranged between 300 and 700 nm and enlarged upon increasing (i) PVA molecular weight, (ii) nanosuspension viscosity, (iii) the amount of NaBH₄ and (iv) the PCD/Ru NP concentration. TEM analysis confirmed that Ru NPs with a mean diameter of around 2 nm were observed at the surface of NFs, embedded in the PVA matrix of NFs. HAADF-STEM and EDS mapping clearly showed that Ru NPs were homogeneously distributed onto and into the matrix of NFs. After their electrospinning, the prepared nanowebs were submitted to a heat post-treatment at 160 °C which was shown to trigger the PVA crystallization. In addition, the physical crosslinking of PVA chains by NaBO₂ resulting from NaBH₄ oxidation in the precursor suspension was also observed. Interestingly, an SEM study evidenced that the thermal post-treatment in combination with the presence of NaBO₂ clearly improved the thermal stability of the synthesized composite nanowebs. Finally, catalytic hydrogenation tests showed the absence of Ru NPs leaching from NFs in the reaction medium, and displayed good conversion of styrene into ethylbenzene.

Atomic layer deposition of palladium nanoparticles on a functional electrospun poly-cyclodextrin nanoweb as a flexible and reusable heterogeneous nanocatalyst for the reduction of nitroaromatic compounds

We here show a rational approach for the fabrication of a flexible, insoluble catalytic electrospun nanoweb of cross-linked cyclodextrin (CD) for the reduction of nitroaromatics. CD nanofibers were produced by electrospinning an aqueous HP-β-CD solution containing a multifunctional cross-linker (i.e., 1,2,3,4-butanetetracarboxylic acid, BTCA) and were subsequently cross-linked by heat treatment, which led to an insoluble electrospun poly-CD nanoweb. The poly-CD nanoweb was decorated with Pd nanoparticles (Pd-NPs) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique over 20 cycles to give rise to a catalytic electrospun nanoweb (i.e., Pd@poly-CD). The formation of the Pd-NPs on the poly-CD nanofiber surface was clearly evidenced by TEM and STEM imaging, which displayed the homogeneously distributed Pd-NPs with a mean size of 4.34 nm. ICP-MS analysis revealed that the Pd content on the Pd@poly-CD nanoweb was 0.039 mg per mg of nanoweb. The catalytic performance of the Pd@poly-CD nanoweb was tested for the reduction of a nitroaromatic compound (i.e., 4-nitrophenol (4-NP)), and high catalytic performance of the Pd@poly-CD nanoweb was observed with a corresponding TOF value of 0.0316 min^-1. XPS was used to explore the oxidation state of Pd atoms before and after the catalytic reduction of 4-NP, and no significant change was observed after catalytic reactions. In brief, the Pd@poly-CD nanoweb having handy, flexible, structural stability and reusability can be effectively used in environmental applications as a heterogeneous nanocatalyst for the reduction of toxic nitroaromatics.

Atomic Layer Deposition of NiOOH/Ni(OH)2 on PIM-1-Based N-Doped Carbon Nanofibers for Electrochemical Water Splitting in Alkaline Medium

Portable and flexible energy devices demand lightweight and highly efficient catalytic materials for use in energy devices. An efficient water splitting electrocatalyst is considered an ideal future energy source. Well-aligned high-surface-area electrospun polymers of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1)-based nitrogen-doped carbon nanofibers were prepared as a free-standing flexible electrode. A non-noble-metal catalyst NiOOH/Ni(OH)₂ was precisely deposited over flexible free-standing carbon nanofibers by using atomic layer deposition (ALD). The morphology, high surface area, nitrogen doping, and Ni states synergistically showed a low onset potential (η_HER =-40 and η_OER =290 mV vs. reversible hydrogen electrode), small overpotential at η₁₀ [oxygen evolution reaction (OER)=390.5 mV and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER)=-147 mV], excellent kinetics (Tafel slopes for OER=50 mV dec^-1 and HER=41 mV dec^-1 ), and high stability (>16 h) towards water splitting in an alkaline medium (0.1 m KOH). The performance was comparable with that of state-of-the-art noble-metal catalysts (e.g., Ir/C, Ru/C for OER, and Pt/C for HER). Post-catalytic characterization with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy further proved the durability of the electrode. This study provides insight into the design of 1D-aligned N-doped PIM-1 electrospun carbon nanofibers as a flexible and free-standing NiOOH/Ni(OH)₂ decorated electrode as a highly stable nanocatalyst for water splitting in an alkaline medium.

Atomic layer deposition of Co3O4 nanocrystals on N-doped electrospun carbon nanofibers for oxygen reduction and oxygen evolution reactions

The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are considered as the two crucial reactions in key renewable-energy technologies including fuel cells and water splitting. Despite promising research progress in the preparation of various non-noble metal based electrocatalysts, it is still highly challenging but desirable to develop novel fabrication strategies to synthesize highly active and cost-effective ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalysts in a precisely controlled manner. Herein, we report atomic layer deposition (ALD) of highly monodisperse Co3O4 nanocrystals of different sizes on N-doped electrospun carbon nanofibers (nCNFs) as high performance bifunctional catalysts (Co@nCNFs) for the ORR and OER. Co@nCNFs (with an average Co3O4 particle size of ∼3 nm) show high ORR performance exhibiting an onset potential of 0.87 V with a low Tafel slope of 119 mV dec-1 approaching that of commercial Pt/C. Similarly, the Co@nCNF electrocatalyst showed remarkable catalytic activity in the OER. The turnover frequency (TOF) value determined at an overpotential of 550 mV for the Co@nCNFs is ∼0.14 s-1 which is ca. 3 and ca. 15-fold higher than those of bulk Co (∼0.05 s-1) and the standard state-of-the-art IrO x (0.0089 s-1) catalyst, respectively. This work will open new possibilities for fabrication of inexpensive non-noble metal materials in highly controlled manner for applications as bifunctional ORR/OER electrocatalysis.
