Preparation of Hollow Cu and CuO x Microspheres with a Hierarchical Structure for Heterogeneous Catalysis

Simple preparation of a CuO@γ-Al2O3 Fenton-like catalyst and its photocatalytic degradation function

We designed a photocatalyst and developed sustainable wastewater purification technology, which have significant advantages in effectively solving the global problem of drinking water shortage. In this study, a new nanocomposite was reported and shown to be a catalyst with excellent performance; CuO was coated successively onto functionalized nano γ-Al₂O₃, and this novel structure could provide abundant active sites. We evaluated the performance of the CuO@γ-Al₂O₃ nanocomposite catalyst for polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) degradation under visible light irradiation. Under optimized conditions (calcination temperature, 450 °C; mass ratio of γ-Al₂O₃:Cu(NO₃)₂·3H₂O, 1:15; pH value, 7; catalyst dosage, 2.6 g/L; reaction temperature, 20 °C; and H₂O₂ dosage, 0.2 g/mL), the CuO@γ-Al₂O₃ nanocomposite catalyst presented an excellent PVA removal rate of 99.21%. After ten consecutive degradation experiments, the catalyst could still maintain a PVA removal rate of 97.58%, thus demonstrating excellent reusability. This study provides an efficient and easy-to-prepare photocatalyst and proposes a mechanism for the synergistic effect of the photocatalytic reaction and the Fenton-like reaction.

Core-shell structural nitrogen-doped carbon foam loaded with nano zero-valent iron for simultaneous remediation of Cd (II) and NAP in water and soil: Kinetics, mechanism, and environmental evaluation

An economical, efficient, and environmentally friendly technology was developed for simultaneous remediation of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil and water. In this study, using pinecones powder as the precursor, the core-shell structural nitrogen-doped carbon foam loaded with nano zero-valent iron (nZVI@NCF) was synthesized through Mannich reaction and high-temperature carbon reduction. The nZVI@NCF was applied as the adsorbent and catalyst to simultaneously remediate the composite pollutants of Cd (II) and naphthalene (NAP). Under the optimal conditions, the adsorption capacity of Cd (II) in water and soil were 13.9 mg·g^-1 and 1.97 mg·g^-1, respectively, and the adsorption process conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The degradation rates of NAP in water (10 mg·L^-1) reached almost 100% as well as it could reach 59.12% in soil (10 mg·kg^-1). In addition, it was proved that the presence of NAP could compete with Cd (II) for the active sites on the surface of the material to inhibit the adsorption of Cd (II), while the co-existence of Cd (II) could improve the degradation of NAP by the nZVI@NCF/PMS system due to the nZVI-Cd bimetallic effect and the pro-oxidant effect of Cd (II) promoting the generation of ROS. The free radical quenching experiment revealed that the generated ·O₂^- was the main substance that mediated the redox of nZVI/Fe²⁺/Fe³⁺ to oxidative NAP during the degradation process. Furthermore, the results of the phytotoxicity test demonstrated that the nZVI@NCF/PMS system could effectively remediate the soil co-contaminated with Cd (II) and NAP as well as improve the soil environment quality. This research will provide new materials and potential technologies for the efficient treatment of the composite pollutants in the environment.

Microporous hierarchically Zn-MOF as an efficient catalyst for the Hantzsch synthesis of polyhydroquinolines

A three-dimensional walnut-like Zn-based MOF microsphere system was designed and synthesized via hydrothermal reaction of zinc salt with 4,6-diamino-2-pyrimidinethiol as a tridentate ligand. Besides, Zn ions were coordinated to the functional groups of the ligand to give a novel Zn-MOF microsphere material. Afterward, the resultant material was thoroughly characterized using various analysis and physico-chemical methods; including, FT-IR, XRD, TGA, EDX, X-ray mapping, SEM, TEM, and BET analysis. The Zn-MOF microspheres were utilized in the Hantzsch reaction for a selective synthesis of asymmetric polyhydroquinolines, using various aromatic aldehydes. Our strategy aims at providing a controlled synthesis of hierarchically nanoporous Zn-MOF microspheres with a well-defined morphology, structure, and excellent catalytic properties. Besides, it would result in having a promising heterogeneous catalyst for a selective synthesis with good yields, short reaction time, a low limit of steric hindrance and electronic effects. Moreover, the heterogeneity of the catalyst is further tested with hot filtration and also the reusability results point.

Core-shell microparticles: From rational engineering to diverse applications

Core-shell microparticles, composed of solid, liquid, or gas bubbles surrounded by a protective shell, are gaining considerable attention as intelligent and versatile carriers that show great potential in biomedical fields. In this review, an overview is given of recent developments in design and applications of biodegradable core-shell systems. Several emerging methodologies including self-assembly, gas-shearing, and coaxial electrospray are discussed and microfluidics technology is emphasized in detail. Furthermore, the characteristics of core-shell microparticles in artificial cells, drug release and cell culture applications are discussed and the superiority of these advanced multi-core microparticles for the generation of artificial cells is highlighted. Finally, the respective developing orientations and limitations inherent to these systems are addressed. It is hoped that this review can inspire researchers to propel the development of this field with new ideas.

Bodipy-Containing Porous Microcapsules for Flow Heterogeneous Photocatalysis

Photocatalysis is a facile strategy for complex chemical transformations. Heterogeneous photocatalysis, especially in the flow system, has attracted much attention as it avoids the separation of catalysts. Herein, a kind of a Bodipy-containing porous microcapsule heterogeneous photocatalyst was rationally constructed with modulation on a multiscale. The diiodo-Bodipy with methacrylate (MA-2IBDP) was synthesized as a polymerizable photosensitizer. After immobilization in a polymer matrix, the intersystem crossing rate constant of MA-2IBDP increased to 2.7 × 10¹⁰ s^-1 and its triplet excited-state lifetime prolonged to ∼1 ms. Porous structures in microcapsules were created to facilitate mass transfer. A flat plate flow reactor was constructed to fix the catalytic microcapsules and improve light utilization. With the combination of all the above benefits, the reaction rate constant (0.896 s^-1) is 10 times faster than that of MA-2IBDP in a homogeneous system for juglone synthesis. The continuous production can last for 30 h without yield decrease. The photocatalyst can also be used in aza-Henry reaction, Alder-Ene reaction, and oxidation of thiols to disulfides with conversion rates above 95%. This study provides a means for the construction of heterogeneous catalysts and the flow reaction system.
