Abstract
Metal ions (MIs) identification is essential for the safety assessment, traceability and authentication of food. Most current approaches for detecting MIs are difficult to reconcile the simplicity, sensitivity and stability simultaneously. In this work, we proposed a novel strategy for discriminating MIs based on fluorescent supramolecular nanoaggregates (SNAs). In the presence of MI, perylene diimide derivatives (PDI)-based SNAs could be formed through the multiple non-covalent interactions between them including electrostatic, coordination and π-π interactions. With the assistance of discriminant analysis (LDA), different MIs (Hg2+, Ag+, Cd2+, Fe3+, Cr3+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Cu2+ and Pb2+) were successfully identified at three different concentration levels. It featured good quantitative sensing abilities in buffer solutions and practical samples. Furthermore, a water-quality evaluation model was successfully constructed for the distinction of different sources of drinking water, and the fluorescence array sensor technology was applied for the first time to the geographical traceability of apples.

Abstract
The application of curcumin in food science is challenged by its poor water solubility, easy degradation under processing and within the gastrointestinal tract, and poor bioavailability. Micro/nanocarrier is an emerging and efficient platform to overcome these drawbacks. This review focuses on the recent advances in the development and application of curcumin-loaded micro/nanocarriers in food research. The recent development advances of curcumin-loaded micro/nanocarriers could be classified into ten basic systems: emulsions, micelles, dendrimers, hydrogel polymeric particles, polymer nanofibers, polymer inclusion complexes, liposomes, solid lipid particles, structured lipid carriers, and extracellular vesicles. The application advances of curcumin-loaded micro/nanocarriers for food research could be classified into four types: coloring agents, functional active agents, preservation agents, and quality sensors. This review demonstrated that micro/nanocarriers were excellent carriers for the fat-soluble curcumin and the obtained curcumin-loaded micro/nanocarriers had promising application prospects in the field of food science.

Abstract
Cellular infiltration into electrospun nanofibers (NFs) is limited due to the dense structure and small pore sizes. We developed a programmed NF collector that can fabricate porous NFs with desired pore sizes and thickness. Previously we demonstrated improved cellular proliferation and differentiation of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and fibroblasts with increased pore sizes of polycaprolactone (PCL) NF in-vitro. This study investigated in-vivo host cell migration and vascular ingrowth within porous NF sheets implanted subcutaneously in a mouse model. Two types of PCL NFs with well-defined pore sizes were created using varying speeds of the NF collector: NF-zero (no movement, pore size 14.4 ± 8.9 µm2) and NF-high (0.232 mm/min, pore size 286.7 ± 381.9 µm2). The NF obtained by using classical flat NF collector (2D NF, pore size 1.09 ± 1.7 µm2) was a control. The three formulae of NFs were implanted subcutaneously in 18 BALB/cJ mice. Animals were killed 7 and 28-days after implantation (n = 3 per group per time point). The tissue with implanted NFs were collected for histologic analysis. Overall, 7-day samples showed little inflammatory response. At 28-days, the degree of tissue penetration of PCL NF sheet matrices was linked to pore size and area. NFs with the largest pore area had more efficient tissue migration and new blood vessel formation compared to those with smaller pore sizes. No newly formed blood vessels were observed in the 2D NF group. A porous NF scaffold with controllable pore size has potential for tissue repair/regeneration in situ with potential for many applications in orthopaedics.

Abstract
Over the past decade, there has been a rising interest in utilizing functionalized porous polymers for sensor applications. By incorporating functional groups into nanostructured materials like hydrogels, nanosheets, and nanopores, exciting new opportunities have emerged for biomarker detection. The ability of functionalized polymers to undergo physical changes and deformations makes them perfect for modulating optical signals. This chemical mechanism enables the creation of biocompatible sensors for in situ biomarker measurement. Here a comprehensive overview of the current publication trends is provided in functionalized polymers, encompassing functional groups that can induce measurable physical deformations. It explores various materials categorized based on their detection targets, which include proteins, carbohydrates, ions, and deoxyribonucleic acid. As such, this work serves as a valuable reference for the development of functionalized polymer-based sensors.

Abstract
Although electrospinning (e-spinning) has witnessed rapid development in recent years, it has also been criticized by environmentalists due to the use of organic solvents. Therefore, aqueous e-spinning (green e-spinning) is considered a more attractive technique. However, considering the poor water resistance and mechanical properties of electrospun (e-spun) nanofibers, cross-linking is a perfect solution. In this review, we systematically discuss the cross-linking e-spinning system for the first time, including cross-linking strategies (in situ, liquid immersion, vapor, and spray cross-linking), cross-linking mechanism (physical and chemical cross-linking) of e-spun nanofibers, and the various applications (e.g., tissue engineering, drug delivery, water treatment, food packaging, and sensors) of cross-linked e-spun nanofibers. Among them, we highlight several cross-linking methods, including UV light cross-linking, electron beam cross-linking, glutaraldehyde (and other commonly used cross-linking agents) chemical cross-linking, thermal cross-linking, and enzymatic cross-linking. Finally, we confirm the significance of cross-linking e-spinning and reveal the problems in the construction of this system.

Abstract
A new fully conjugated covalent organic framework material (COFTFPPy-ThDAN) has been synthesized via the Knoevenagel condensation reaction using 1,3,6,8-tetra(4-formylphenyl)pyrene (TFPPy) as the chromogenic unit and 2,2'-([2,2'-bithiophene]-5,5'-diyl)diacetonitrile (ThDAN) as the linker. The COFTFPPy-ThDAN has been successfully prepared under the optimized conditions and showed excellent crystallinity and chemical stability. Especially, it was able to maintain its crystallinity even when immersed under harsh conditions such as HCl (3 M) and NaOH (3 M). Meanwhile, COFTFPPy-ThDAN exhibited good fluorescence properties, which could remain relatively stable under different pH conditions. Moreover, COFTFPPy-ThDAN was further employed for the detection of Fe3+ with high sensitivity and selectivity with a limit of detection (LOD) of 1.26 μM. COFTFPPy-ThDAN with high stability and fluorescence is a promising material for chemical sensing.

Abstract
In this paper, a novel colorimetric strategy based on iodide ion (I-) and Cu-MOF catalysis was developed for simple, low-cost, and naked-eye detection of Fe3+. Both I- and MOFs display catalytic activity toward peroxidase substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). Adsorption and embedding of I- in Cu-MOF generates Cu-MOF/I with a three-dimensional porous structure that exhibits higher specific surface area, providing more active sites to facilitate interaction with TMB, resulting in enhanced catalytic efficiency. Reports have shown that Fe3+ can oxidize TMB in the absence of H2O2. We found that as Fe3+ concentration increases, the color of the system gradually deepens and the UV absorption peak gradually increases, thus providing a colorimetric sensor for quantitative Fe3+ detection. The detection limit (LOD) obtained in the presence of I- is 200 nM; however, in the absence of I-, the LOD is approx. 10 μM. Thus, the sensing system is ideal for signal amplified analysis of Fe3+. In the presence of various interfering metal ions, the developed sensing system displays excellent selectivity. Additionally, the practical application to Fe3+ detection in real samples is explored.

Abstract
AbstractElectrospinning as one of the most versatile technologies have attracted a lot of scientists’ interests in past decades due to its great diversity of fabricating nanofibers featuring high aspect ratio, large specific surface area, flexibility, structural abundance, and surface functionality. Remarkable progress has been made in terms of the versatile structures of electrospun fibers and great functionalities to enable a broad spectrum of applications. In this article, the electrospun fibers with different structures and their applications are reviewed. First, several kinds of electrospun fibers with different structures are presented. Then the applications of various structural electrospun fibers in different fields, including catalysis, drug release, batteries, and supercapacitors, are reviewed. Finally, the application prospect and main challenges of electrospun fibers are discussed. We hope that this review will provide readers with a comprehensive understanding of the structural design and applications of electrospun fibers in different fields.

Abstract
The increasing heavy metal pollution in the aquatic ecosystem mainly driven by industrial activities has raised severe concerns over human and environmental health that apparently necessitate the design and development of ideal strategies for the effective monitoring of heavy metals. In this regard, colorimetric detection provides excellent opportunities for the easy monitoring of heavy metal ions, and especially, corresponding solid-state sensors enable potential opportunities for their applicability in real-world monitoring. As a result of the significant interest originating from their simplicity, exceptional characteristics, and applicability, the electrospun nanofiber-based colorimetric detection of heavy metal ions has undergone radical developments in the recent decade. This review illustrates the range of various approaches and functional molecules employed in the fabrication of electrospun nanofibers intended for the colorimetric detection of various metal ions in water. We highlight relevant investigations on the fabrication of functionalized electrospun nanofibers encompassing different approaches and functional molecules along with their sensing performance. Furthermore, we discuss upcoming prospectus and future opportunities in the exploration of designing electrospun nanofiber-based colorimetric sensors for real-world applications.

Abstract
Contrasting to the traditional centimeter-sized soft capsules that are difficult to swallow or micro/nanometer-sized soft capsules that suffer from limited loading capacity for fish oil/nutrients and lowered stability, the millimeter-sized soft capsules with good enough stability could be a potential solution in solving these problems. Herein, we report millimeter-sized soft core-shell capsules of 0.42-1.85 mm with an inner diameter of 0.36-1.75 mm, for fish oil/nutrients, obtained through an electrospray approach upon optimization of different fabrication parameters such as applied voltage, sodium alginate concentration, shell/core feeding rate ratio, times of feeding rate, and types of coaxial needles. Further in vitro and in vivo studies reveal that the resulting soft capsules were apparently weakened and became mechanically destructive in the simulated small intestine solution and were totally destroyed in the simulated small intestine solution if they were first treated in the simulated stomach solution but not in the simulated stomach solution, which makes the millimeter-sized capsules useful as containers for specific delivery of fish oils and lipophilic nutrients to the stomach and intestines with excellent in vivo bioavailability (>90%). The whole fabrication approach is very facile with no complicated polymer modification and formulations involved, which endows the resulting soft capsules with broad application prospect in food and drug industries.

Abstract
Electrospinning is an effective and versatile method to prepare continuous polymer nanofibers and nonwovens that exhibit excellent properties such as high molecular orientation, high porosity and large specific surface area. Benefitting from these outstanding and intriguing features, electrospun nanofibers have been employed as a promising candidate for the fabrication of food packaging materials. Actually, the electrospun nanofibers used in food packaging must possess biocompatibility and low toxicity. In addition, in order to maintain the quality of food and extend its shelf life, food packaging materials also need to have certain functionality. Herein, in this timely review, functional materials produced from electrospinning toward food packaging are highlighted. At first, various strategies for the preparation of polymer electrospun fiber are introduced, then the characteristics of different packaging films and their successful applications in food packaging are summarized, including degradable materials, superhydrophobic materials, edible materials, antibacterial materials and high barrier materials. Finally, the future perspective and key challenges of polymer electrospun nanofibers for food packaging are also discussed. Hopefully, this review would provide a fundamental insight into the development of electrospun functional materials with high performance for food packaging.

Abstract
The traditional electrospinning process produces dense two-dimensional (2D) nanofiber (NF) sheets that limit cell infiltration and proliferation. Our previous study demonstrated that 3D NF sheets could be formed on an NF collector surface mounted with multiple movable needles through the corona discharge. In this study, we developed a programmed electrospun 3D NF collector. It can precisely control the moving speed of NF collector during electrospinning; thereby fabricating 3D NFs with desired microstructures (pore size, pore volume, and interconnectivity). Four types of polycaprolactone (PCL) 3D NF matrices with different microstructures can be obtained concurrently on the NF collector surface, which are set by different forward moving speed of the NF collector device: NF-zero (no move, as control), NF-low (0.085 mm/min), NF-mid (0.158 mm/min) and NF-high (0.232 mm/min). A linear increase of the NF sheet thickness (from 0.21 mm to 0.91 mm) was recorded with accelerating collector movement. Quantitative analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), micro-computed tomography (μ-CT), and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) showed a monotonic increase of pore size and porosity with the increase of collector moving speeds. The collector movement also impacted the crystallinity and mechanical properties of the NFs. When prepared at high collector speed, the NFs showed improved proliferation and differentiation (p < .05) of pre-osteoblastic MC3T3 cells compared to the NFs from the static collector. A programmed NF collector device allows for the reproducible, precise and continuous fabrication of 3D NFs with tailorable geometry and microstructures. This simple, controllable, one-step process could promote the clinical translation of electrospun NFs in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Abstract
A gas nanosensor is an instrument that converts the information of an unknown gas (species, concentration, etc.) into other signals (for example, an electrical signal) according to certain principles, combining detection principles, material science, and processing technology. As an effective application for detecting a large number of dangerous gases, gas nanosensors have attracted extensive interest. However, their development and application are restricted because of issues such as a low response, poor selectivity, and high operation temperature, etc. To tackle these issues, various measures have been studied and will be introduced in this review, mainly including controlling the nanostructure, doping with 2D nanomaterials, decorating with noble metal nanoparticles, and forming the heterojunction. In every section, recent advances and typical research, as well mechanisms, will also be demonstrated.
