Nature-Inspired Windmill for Water Collection in Complex Windy Environments

Research progress of bionic fog collection surfaces based on special structures from natural organisms

With the increasing shortage of water resources, people are seeking more innovative ways to collect fog to meet the growing need for production and the demand for livelihood. It has been proven that fog collection is efficient for collecting water in dry but foggy areas. As a hot research topic in recent years, bionic surfaces with fog collection functions have attracted widespread attention in practical applications and basic research. By studying natural organisms and bionic surfaces, more avenues are provided for the development of fog collection devices. Firstly, starting from biological prototypes, this article explored the structural characteristics and fog collection mechanisms of natural organisms such as spider silk, desert beetles, cactus, Nepenthes and other animals and plants (Sarracenia, shorebird and wheat awn), revealing the fog collection mechanism of the natural organisms based on microstructures. Secondly, based on the theory of interfacial tension, we would delve into the fog collection function's theoretical basis and wetting model, expounding the fog collection mechanism from a theoretical perspective. Thirdly, a detailed introduction was given to prepare bionic surfaces and recently explore fog collection devices. For bionic surfaces of a single biological prototype, the fog collection efficiency is about 2000-4000 mg cm-2 h-1. For bionic surfaces of multiple biological prototypes, the fog collection efficiency reaches 7000 mg cm-2 h-1. Finally, a critical analysis was conducted on the current challenges and future developments, aiming to promote the next generation of fog collection devices from a scientific perspective from research to practical applications.

Biomimetic fluorine-free 3D alternating hydrophilic-superhydrophobic surfaces with different bump morphologies for efficient water harvesting

Biomimetic 3D hydrophilic-superhydrophobic hybrid surfaces with bump structures were prepared by a combination of spin-coating and high-temperature calcination. How wettability and different bulge morphologies affect droplet capture and removal behavior were compared and analyzed. Hydrophilic-superhydrophobic hybrid PDMS@copper with linear bumps showed the best water-collecting performance, bettering by 151% the original copper sheet and showing a 135% improvement over a superhydrophobic surface without bulges. Both hemispherical and linear bulges accelerate droplet nucleation and growth, but the unique anisotropy of linear bulges enhances the water collection performance of samples with linear bulges. This combination of hybrid wettability and surface morphology inspires 3D structured surfaces and hybrid wettability surfaces.

Elastic Textile Threads for Fog Harvesting

The potential applications of textile materials in fog harvesting have long been demonstrated. This work designed novel fog harvesters according to the distinct features of elastic textile threads (ETTs) to enhance droplet capture, large-droplet growth, and droplet pouring and improve fog harvesting efficiency. We prepared m@ETTs (modified ETTs) using three novel chemical and physical methods. First, we prepared spandex elastic threads with a non-uniform rough surface containing silica nanoparticles and titanium particles through the sol-gel triethoxymethylsilane method. Second, we prepared a rubber/polyester thread with a rough surface by breaking the thread shell with toluene solution, creating knots on the surface of the rubber core. Third, we prepared a polyurethane thread with a bumpy superhydrophobic surface by spraying a tetrafluoroethylene adhesive and silica nanoparticles on the thread. Furthermore, we connected ETTs to an automatic stretching-recovery system to obtain auto-ETTs as another group of harvesters. We obtained auto-i@ETTs by introducing elastic bumps/knots onto the auto-ETT surface. The fog harvesting efficiencies of m@ETTs were approximately 60-120% greater than those of the ETTs. The water harvesting rate of the auto-i@ETT was 2.5 times that of the ETT, with the highest water harvesting rate of auto-i@ETT reaching 3.35 g/h/cm². Moreover, several novel principles of droplet behavior and thread elasticity were revealed. The elastic elongation level of the ETTs was proportional to their water harvesting efficiency. The stretching-recovery state of the elastic thread did not influence the water contact angle but affected the droplet state on the thread surface. The temporary slack/stick state of adjacent elastic threads on auto-ETTs contributed to droplet convergence and pouring. Overall, this novel approach demonstrates the significant potential of elastic threads in fog harvesting applications.

Macroporous Hydrogel for High-Performance Atmospheric Water Harvesting

Simple, low-cost, and high-performance atmospheric water harvesting (AWH) still remains challenging in the context of global water shortage. Here, we present a simple and low-cost macroporous hydrogel for high-performance AWH to address this challenge. We employed an innovative strategy of pore foaming and vacuum drying to rationally fabricate a macroporous hydrogel. The hydrogel is endowed with a macroporous structure and a high specific surface area, enabling sufficient contact of the inner sorbent with outside air and high-performance AWH. The experiments demonstrate that macroporous hydrogels can achieve high-performance AWH with a broad range of sorption humidity [relative humidity (RH) from 100% to even lower than 20%], high water sorption capacity (highest 433.72% of hydrogel's own weight at ∼98% RH, 25 °C within 60 h), rapid vapor capturing (the sorption efficiency is as high as 0.32 g g^-1 h^-1 in the first 3 h at 90% RH, 25 °C), unique durability, low desorption temperature (∼50 °C, lowest), and high water-releasing rate (release 99.38% of the sorbed water under 500 W m^-2 light for 6 h). The results show that this macroporous hydrogel can sorb water more than 193.46% of its own weight overnight (13 h) at a RH of ∼90%, 25 °C and release as high as 99.38% of the sorbed water via the photothermal effect. It is estimated that the daily water yield can reach up to approximately 2.56 kg kg^-1 day^-1 in real outdoor conditions, enabling daily minimum water consumption of an adult. Our simple, affordable, and easy-to-scale-up macroporous hydrogel can not only unleash the unlimited possibilities for large-scale and high-performance AWH but also offer promising opportunities for functional materials, soft matter, flexible electronics, tissue engineering, and biomedical applications.

Bioinspired functional SLIPSs and wettability gradient surfaces and their synergistic cooperation and opportunities for enhanced condensate and fluid transport

Bioinspired smart functional surfaces have received increasing attention in recent years owed to their tunable wettability and enhanced droplet transport suggesting them as excellent candidates for industrial and nanotechnology-related applications. More specifically, bioinspired slippery lubricant infused porous surfaces (SLIPSs) have been proposed for their low adhesion enabling continuous dropwise condensation (DWC) even of low-surface tension fluids. In addition, functional surfaces with chemical and/or structural wettability gradients have also been exploited empowering spontaneous droplet transport in a controlled manner. Current research has focused on the better understanding of the mechanisms and intimate interactions taking place between liquid droplets and functional surfaces or on the forces imposed by differences in surface wettability and/or by Laplace pressure owed to chemical or structural gradients. Nonetheless, less attention has been paid to the synergistic cooperation of efficiently driving droplet transport via chemical and/or structural patterns/gradients on a low surface energy/adhesion background imposed by SLIPSs, with the consequent promising potential for microfluidics and condensation heat transfer applications amongst others. This review provides a detailed and timely overview and summary on recent advances and developments on bioinspired SLIPSs and on wettability gradient surfaces with focus on their synergistic cooperation for condensation and fluid transport related applications. Firstly, the fundamental theory and mechanisms governing complex droplet transport on homogeneous, on wettability gradient surfaces and on inclined SLIPSs are introduced. Secondly, recent advances on the fabrication and characterization of SLIPSs and functional surfaces are presented. Then, the condensation performance on such functional surfaces comprising chemical or structural wettability gradients is reviewed and their applications on condensation heat transfer are summarized. Last a summary outlook highlighting the opportunities and challenges on the synergistic cooperation of SLIPSs and wettability gradient surfaces for heat transfer as well as future perspective in modern applications are presented.

Multifuctional Janus Materials for Rapid One-Way Water Transportation and Fog Collection

A novel micronano wire channels Janus membrane (WCJM) was fabricated by a convenience spraying method. We prepared a series of samples with different (super)hydrophobic energy barriers and studied the effects of WCJMs on one-way transportation and fog collection. The droplets can be one-way transported from the (super)hydrophobic side to the superhydrophilic side, forming a transport channel when they contact the superhydrophilic micronano wire under hydrostatic pressure. In the experiment, when droplets touch the exposed micronano wires, they will be rapidly absorbed by the superhydrophilic side. However, when the superhydrophobic energy barrier is thick and the superhydrophobic layer completely covers the micronano wires on the substrate surface, the droplets cannot achieve one way transport behavior. Besides, we observed three different fog collection modes. They have a significant difference in fog collection efficiency. In WCJM-3, the superhydrophobic side collects fog in a dropwise condensation mode, and then transported to the superhydrophilic side through the micronano wire channels for storage, with the highest fog collection efficiency (1.1 g/cm²·h). The results show that the WCJM surface not only makes full use of the difference in wettability and micronano wire structure to promote the droplets one-way transportation, but also improves the fog collection performance by accelerating surface regeneration, which has potential application value in fog collection, droplet treatment and related engineering.
