Abstract
DFT (M06-2X) calculations were used to study the NHC-catalyzed [3 + 3] cycloaddition of enals with aminoacrylates. The catalytic cycle begins with the binding of the NHC to enal. Subsequent intramolecular proton transfer generates the Breslow intermediate. This intermediate undergoes an oxidative reaction, leading to the formation of an acyl azolium intermediate, which further reacts with the other substrate aminoacrylate via a new C-C bond formation. This step determines the stereoselectivity of the current reaction, and re-face addition mode leading to the formation of the intermediate with an S-configuration is predominant. Afterward, sequential protonation, deprotonation, and cyclization form the six-membered cyclic intermediate, which upon elimination of the NHC affords the final cycloaddition product dihydropyridinone. The computed enantiomeric excess (99.1% ee) is in very good agreement with the experimentally reported value (99% ee). The origin of enantioselectivity is traced to the stronger LP···π interactions between the acyl azolium intermediate and aminoacrylate in the favored S-congurational transition state.

Abstract
The mechanism, chemoselectivity and stereoselectivity in the NHC-catalyzed reaction between enals and pyrroles for the synthesis of 5,6-dihydroindolizine were studied using DFT calculations. The cycle for catalytic generation of 5,6-dihydroindolizine proceeds via seven steps: (1) addition of the NHC to enal, (2) formation of a Breslow intermediate through [1,2]-proton transfer, (3) oxidation, (4) Michael addition, (5) [2+2] cycloaddition, (6) liberation of NHCs and (7) decarboxylation. Our results show that the presence of DMAP·H+ lowers the barrier for [1,2]-proton transfer. In addition, NHC·H+ plays a key role in decarboxylation. Michael addition which involves the formation of a new C-C bond was identified to be the chemo- and stereoselectivity-determining step, leading to the experimentally observed 5S,6R-dihydroindolizine. Analysis of the noncovalent interactions revealed that the observed stereoselectivity is attributed to the differential weak interactions (CH⋯π, LP⋯π and CH⋯CH) involved in the transition states during the Michael addition step. The computational results not only rationalize experimental observations but also provide some useful information for the future design of new catalytic processes.

Abstract
Axially chiral C2-arylquinoline has been successfully constructed via asymmetric heteroannulation of alkynes catalyzed by chiral phosphoric acid with high yield and high enantioselectivity. Inspired by this intriguing work, theoretical calculations have been carried out, and the detailed reaction mechanism has been elaborated, in which the whole reaction can be divided into steps including hydrogen transfer, C-N bonding, annulation reaction and the final dehydration processes. The initial hydrogen-transfer reaction has two possible pathways, while the subsequent C-N bonding process has eight possible pathways. Then, after the annulation reaction and the final dehydration processes, the major product and byproduct were formed. QTAIM and IGMH analyses were used to illustrate the role of weak intermolecular interactions in the catalytic process, and the distortion/interaction and EDA analyses provided a deeper understanding of the origin of enantioselectivity. The calculated results are consistent with the experimental results. This work would provide valuable insights into asymmetric reactions catalyzed by chiral phosphoric acid.

Abstract
Mechanisms for the Csp-H silylation between prop-2-yn-1-ylcyclohexane and triethylsilane, catalyzed by MOH/MH (M = Na or K), were investigated at the M06-L-D3/ma-def2-TZVP level. The SMD model was applied to simulate the solvent effect of 1,2-dimethoxyethane (DME). Computational results suggested that the Csp-H activation of prop-2-yn-1-ylcyclohexane could be achieved by MOH to generate R-CC-M compounds, which continued to react with triethylsilane to yield the final product: (3-cyclohexylprop-1-yn-1-yl) triethylsilane. Moreover, analysis of the Gibbs free energy surface of the three reactions suggested that a path with the participation of LiOH had the highest energy barrier, which was consistent with experimental results showing that only a small amount of product had been formed. The obtained KH could interact readily with the H2O molecule with a much lower energy barrier (0.6 kcal mol-1) than that using the path with prop-2-yn-1-ylcyclohexane. Furthermore, compared to MOH, MH could catalyze the reaction with lower energy barriers, and the reactions became exothermic, thereby benefiting the reaction. Finally, the mechanism for obtaining the byproduct (prop-1-yn-1-ylcyclohexane) was posited: it had a higher energy barrier than the path to yield the main product. Frontier orbital, noncovalent interactions (NCI), Fukui function and dual descriptor analyses could be used to analyze the structure and reveal the reaction substances.

Abstract
In this study, we investigated the photo-catalytic mechanisms for the construction of C-O bonds from arenes (benzene, 2',6'-dimethyl-[1,1'-biphenyl]-2-carboxylic acid, or 2,4-dichloro-1-fluorobenzene), catalyzed by 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-p-benzoquinone (DDQ). All the structures for the Gibbs free surfaces were calculated at the M06-2X-D3/ma-def2-SVP level in the SMD solvent model. Also, TDDFT calculations of DDQ were performed at the PBE1PBE-D3/ma-def2-SVP level in the SMD solvent model. The computational results indicated that DDQ, serving as a photo-catalyst, would be excited under visible light of 450 nm, aligning well with experimental observations as reflected in the UV-vis spectrum. Gibbs free energy surface analyses of the three reactions suggested that the path involving 3DDQ* activating the reactant (-COOH, H2O, or CH3OH) is favorable. Additionally, the role of O2 was investigated, revealing that it could facilitate the recycling of DDQ by lowering the energy barrier for the conversion of the DDQH˙ radical (not DDQH2) into DDQ. The use of ρhole and ρele can reveal the photo-catalytic reaction and charge transfer processes, while localized orbital locator isosurfaces and electron spin density isosurface graphs were employed to analyze structures and elucidate the single electron distribution. These computational results offer valuable insights into the studied interactions and related processes, shedding light on the mechanisms governing C-O bond formation from arenes catalyzed by DDQ.

Abstract
To disclose the reaction mechanism and selectivity in the NHC-catalyzed reaction of 2-bromoenal and 6-methyluracil-5-carbaldehyde, a systematic computational study has been performed. According to DFT computations, the catalytic cycle is divided into eight elementary steps: nucleophilic attack of the NHC on 2-bromoenal, 1,2-proton transfer, C-Br bond dissociation, 1,3-proton transfer, addition to 6-methyluracil-5-carbaldehyde, [2 + 2] cycloaddition, NHC dissociation, and decarboxylation. The Bronsted acid DABCO·H+ plays a crucial role in proton transfer and decarboxylation steps. The addition to 6-methyluracil-5-carbaldehyde determines both chemoselectivity and stereoselectivity, leading to R-configured carbocycle-fused uracil, in agreement with experimental results. NCI analysis indicates that the CH···N, CH···π, and LP···π interactions should be the key factor for determining the stereoselectivity. ELF analysis shows the main role of the NHC in promoting C-Br bond dissociation. The mechanistic insights obtained in the present work may guide the rational design of potential NHC catalysts.

Abstract
It is generally accepted that N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed imine transformations are initiated by a nucleophilic attack (NA) by NHC. However, due to significant nucleophilicity of the iminyl nitrogen atom in imines, the electrophilic attack (EA) by electrophiles onto imine would also be a possible mechanism of these kinds of reactions. Therefore, we use the quantum mechanical approach to disclose that both the NA and EA modes could be switchable for a wide range of NHC-catalyzed transformations of imines.

Abstract
A carbene-catalyzed sulfonylation reaction between enone aryl aldehydes and sulfonyl chlorides is disclosed. The reaction effectively installs sulfone moieties in a highly enantioselective manner to afford sulfone-containing bicyclic lactones. The sulfonyl chloride behaves both as an oxidant and a nucleophilic substrate (via its reduced form) in this N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed process. The NHC catalyst provides both activation and stereoselectivity control on a very remote site of enone aryl aldehyde substrates. Water plays an important role in modulating catalyst deactivation and reactivation routes that involve reactions between NHC and sulfonyl chloride. Experimental studies and DFT calculations suggest that an unprecedented intermediate and a new oxidation mode of the NHC-derived Breslow intermediate are involved in the new asymmetric sulfonylation reaction.

Abstract
Quantum chemistry is used to investigate the nature of protonated N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC·H+) catalysed decarboxylation recently reported by Zhang et al. (ACS Catal., 2021, 11, 3443-3454). Our results show that there are strong electrostatic effects within the NHC·H+ catalysed decarboxylation, and these dominate hydrogen bonding. At the same time, energy decomposition analyses and comparison between the original NHC·H+ catalyst and a truncated form reveal that stabilizing dispersion interactions are also critical, as is induction. We also show that the electrostatic effects and their associated catalytic effects can be further enhanced using charged functional groups.

Abstract
A computational study was performed to explore the possible mechanisms of β-isocinchonine-catalyzed asymmetric C(sp2)-H allylation of trisubstituted allenoates using Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) carbonates for synthesis of axially chiral tetrasubstituted allenoates. The calculated results indicate that the most energetically favorable pathway includes (1) nucleophilic attack on MBH carbonate by β-isocinchonine, (2) BocO- dissociation, (3) stereoselective formation of the C-C bond, and (4) regeneration of the catalyst. By tracking the orbital overlap/interaction changes, the half shoulder-to-head orbital overlap mode can be smoothly switched to a head-to-head orbital overlap mode for the key C-C σ bond formation, which is also identified as the stereoselectivity-determining process. Further distortion/interaction, noncovalent interaction (NCI), and atom-in-molecule (AIM) analyses demonstrate that C-H···O and C-H···π interactions should be key for controlling the axial and central chirality. This work would be useful for rational design of organocatalytic allylic alkylation reactions for synthesis of axially chiral compounds in the future.

Abstract
A computational study was contributed to explore the origin of stereoselectivity of NHC-mediated cyclization reaction between benzoic acid and o-phthalaldehyde for asymmetric construction of phthalidyl ester. The most energetically favorable pathway mainly includes the following steps: (1) nucleophilic attack on carbonyl carbon of o-phthalaldehyde by catalyst NHC, (2) formation of Breslow intermediate, (3) oxidation by DQ, (4) asymmetric formation of dual C-O bonds, and (5) dissociation of catalyst with the product. The C-O bond formation was testified as the stereoselectivity-determining step, the R-configurational pathway is more energetically favorable than the S-configurational one. The non-covalent interaction (NCI) and atom-in-molecule (AIM) analyses were performed to reveal that the O-H ⋅⋅⋅ O and C-H ⋅⋅⋅ O hydrogen-bond interactions are the key factors for controlling the stereoselectivity. The detailed mechanism and origin of stereoselectivity give useful insights for understanding organocatalytic reactions for asymmetric construction of C-O bond.

Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) belong to the popular family of organocatalysts used in a wide range of reactions, including that for the synthesis of complex natural products and biologically active compounds. In their organocatalytic manifestation, NHCs are known to impart umpolung reactivity to aldehydes and ketones, which are then exploited in the generation of homoenolate, acyl anion, and enolate equivalents suitable for a plethora of reactions such as annulation, benzoin, Stetter, Claisen rearrangement, cycloaddition, and C-C and C-H bond functionalization reactions and so on. A common thread that runs through these NHC catalyzed reactions is the proposed involvement of an enaminol, also known as the Breslow intermediate, formed by the nucleophilic addition of an NHC to a carbonyl group of a suitable electrophile. In the emerging years of NHC catalysis, enaminol remained elusive and was largely considered a putative intermediate owing to the difficulties encountered in its isolation and characterization. However, in the last decade, synergistic efforts utilizing an array of computational and experimental techniques have helped in gaining important insights into the formation and characterization of Breslow intermediates. Computational studies have suggested that a direct 1,2-proton transfer within the initial zwitterionic intermediate, generated by the action of an NHC on the carbonyl carbon, is energetically prohibitive and hence the participation of other species capable of promoting an assisted proton transfer is more likely. The proton transfer assisted by additives (such as acids, bases, other species, or even a solvent) was found to ease the kinetics of formation of Breslow intermediates. These important details on the formation, in situ detection, isolation, and characterization of the Breslow intermediate are scattered over a series of reports spanning well over a decade, and we intend to consolidate them in this review and provide a critical assessment of these developments. Given the central role of the Breslow intermediate in organocatalytic reactions, this treatise is expected to serve as a valuable source of knowledge on the same.
