Investigating the Sole Olefin-Based Cycle in Small-Cage MCM-35-Catalyzed Methanol-to-Olefins Reactions. Molecules 2024; 29:2037. Abstract
Small-pore zeolites catalyze the methanol-to-olefins (MTO) reaction via a dual-cycle mechanism, encompassing both olefin- and aromatic-based cycles. Zeolite topology is crucial in determining both the catalytic pathway and the product selectivity of the MTO reaction. Herein, we investigate the mechanistic influence of MCM-35 zeolite on the MTO process. The structural properties of the as-synthesized MCM-35 catalyst, including its confined cages (6.19 Å), were characterized, confirming them as the catalytic centers. Then, the MTO reactions were systematically performed and investigated over a MCM-35 catalyst. Feeding pure methanol to the reactor yielded minimal MTO activity despite the formation of some aromatic species within the zeolite. The results suggest that the aromatic-based cycle is entirely suppressed in MCM-35, preventing the simultaneous occurrence of the olefin-based cycle. However, cofeeding a small amount of propene in methanol can obviously enhance the methanol conversion under the same studied reaction conditions. Thus, the exclusive operation of the olefin-based cycle in the MTO reaction, independent of the aromatic-based cycle, was demonstrated in MCM-35 zeolite.

Abstract
ConspectusThirty years ago, George A. Olah proposed the concept of the methanol economy, where methanol replaces fossil fuels as a means of energy storage, ground transportation fuel, and raw material for the manufacture of other carbon-based products. Over the years, with rising global warming concerns, the concept has evolved. A special interest is devoted to the development of catalytic processes that allow the transformation of carbon dioxide, via methanol, into CO2 neutral liquid hydrocarbons. These products could replace the oil-based fuels currently used by combustion engines. The rapid depletion of such fuels would avoid a considerable amount of CO2 emissions during the current energy transition.Over the past decade, we have focused on different key processes that should allow for maximal atom efficiency and, therefore, minimal energy consumption in a field, CO2 valorization, that can easily become a zero-sum game. In this Account, we highlight the importance of catalyst design to overcome the process challenges in the production of liquid fuels from methanol. Additionally, progress in multifunctional catalysts able to directly convert, in one single reactor, CO2 to liquid fuels is also discussed in detail. This integrated option is of particular interest since it allows an important decrease in operational units while increasing throughput by converting, in situ, a thermodynamically limited intermediate.

Abstract
Crystalline beta zeolite molecular sieve with SiO2/Al2O3 molar ratio of 28.5 was synthesized by the hydrothermal crystallization method and examined for methanol dehydration reaction. The micro-mesoporous beta zeolite was active between 280 and 450°C. Dimethyl ether (DME) was observed as the predominant product at all reaction temperatures, with a maximum selectivity of 47.9% at 300°C and a methanol turnover frequency (TOFMeOH) of 741.9 h-1. At increased reaction temperatures, beta zeolite showed enhanced strong acid site fraction, promoting higher hydrocarbon formation following the olefin-based cycle. It was revealed that the crystallinity, porosity and acidity of beta zeolite change in the reaction environment. Amorphous carbon deposition occurred on beta zeolite, which involved a loss in crystallinity to some extent. The temperature increase showed a pore-broadening phenomenon at elevated temperature regions. Regeneration cycle testing demonstrated beta zeolite activity maintained stable throughout a 280 h time-on-stream period.

Abstract
Direct conversion of methane to methanol is an effective and practical process to improve the efficiency of natural gas utilization. Copper (Cu)-based catalysts have attracted great research attention, due to their unique ability to selectively catalyze the partial oxidation of methane to methanol at relatively low temperatures. In recent decades, many different catalysts have been studied to achieve a high conversion of methane to methanol, including the Cu-based enzymes, Cu-zeolites, Cu-MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) and Cu-oxides. In this mini review, we will detail the obtained evidence on the exact state of the active Cu sites on these various catalysts, which have arisen from the most recently developed techniques and the results of DFT calculations. We aim to establish the structure–performance relationship in terms of the properties of these materials and their catalytic functionalities, and also discuss the unresolved questions in the direct conversion of methane to methanol reactions. Finally, we hope to offer some suggestions and strategies for guiding the practical applications regarding the catalyst design and engineering for a high methanol yield in the methane oxidation reaction.

Abstract
Inspired by the alveolar configuration, an alveoli-like ZSM-5 and the corresponding platinum encapsulated nanocomposite (Pt@PZ5) were fabricated via a dual-template method and a controlled selective desilication-recrystallization strategy. The dimensions of the central cavity, interconnected zeolitic vesicles, and mesoporous shell could be tuned by adjusting the synthesis parameters, as verified by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen physisorption investigations, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction techniques. Thanks to these properties and merits, the alveoli-like Pt@PZ5 showed the highest catalytic performance with excellent stability, obtaining 100% benzene conversion at 180 °C. Adsorption experiments combined with a finite-element simulation study uncovered that the alveolar architecture could expedite the accumulation of reactants and boost mass transfer; the conversion of intermediates in the voids could be further facilitated, giving optimal catalytic performance. Additionally, the alveolar architecture is resistant to metal sintering (5-20 nm) and leaching, even after calcination at 850 °C for 360 min. This work provides an alveolar concept into the rational design of efficient catalysts for fundamental catalytic action.

Abstract
C1 chemistry, which is the catalytic transformation of C1 molecules including CO, CO2 , CH4 , CH3 OH, and HCOOH, plays an important role in providing energy and chemical supplies while meeting environmental requirements. Zeolites are highly efficient solid catalysts used in the chemical industry. The design and development of zeolite-based mono-, bi-, and multifunctional catalysts has led to a booming application of zeolite-based catalysts to C1 chemistry. Combining the advantages of zeolites and metallic catalytic species has promoted the catalytic production of various hydrocarbons (e.g., methane, light olefins, aromatics, and liquid fuels) and oxygenates (e.g., methanol, dimethyl ether, formic acid, and higher alcohols) from C1 molecules. The key zeolite descriptors that influence catalytic performance, such as framework topologies, nanoconfinement effects, Brønsted acidities, secondary-pore systems, particle sizes, extraframework cations and atoms, hydrophobicity and hydrophilicity, and proximity between acid and metallic sites are discussed to provide a deep understanding of the significance of zeolites to C1 chemistry. An outlook regarding challenges and opportunities for the conversion of C1 resources using zeolite-based catalysts to meet emerging energy and environmental demands is also presented.

Controlling the Morphology and Titanium Coordination States of TS-1 Zeolites by Crystal Growth Modifier. Inorg Chem 2020; 59:13201-13210. Abstract
Developing an effective strategy to synthesize perfect titanosilicate TS-1 zeolite crystals with desirable morphologies, enriched isolated framework Ti species, and thus enhanced catalytic oxidation properties is a pervasive challenge in zeolite crystal engineering. We here used an amino acid l-carnitine as a crystal growth modifier and ethanol as a cosolvent to regulate the morphologies and the Ti coordination states of TS-1 zeolites. During the hydrothermal crystallization process, the introduced l-carnitine can not only tailor the anisotropic growth rates of zeolite crystals but also induce the formation of uniformly distributed framework Ti species through building a suitable chemical interaction with the Ti precursor species. Condition optimizations could afford the generation of perfect hexagonal plate TS-1 crystals and elongated platelet TS-1 crystals enriched in tetrahedral framework Ti sites (TiO4) or mononuclear octahedrally coordinated Ti species (TiO6). Both samples showed significant improvement in catalytic activity for the H2O2-mediated epoxidation of alkenes. In particular, the elongated platelet TS-1 enriched in "TiO6" species afforded the highest activity in 1-hexene epoxidation, with a turnover frequency (TOF) of up to 131 h-1, which is approximately twice as high as that of the conventional TS-1 zeolite (TOF: 65 h-1) and even higher than those of the literature-reported TiO6-containting TS-1 catalysts derived from the hydrothermal post-treatment of TS-1 zeolites. This work demonstrates that the morphologies and the titanium coordination states of TS-1 zeolites can be effectively tuned by directly introducing suitable crystal growth modifiers, thus providing new opportunities for developing highly efficient titanosilicate zeolite catalysts for important catalytic applications.

Abstract
Prion diseases are a group of rare neurodegenerative disorders that develop as a result of the conformational conversion of normal prion protein (PrPC) to the disease-associated isoform (PrPSc). The mechanism that actually causes disease remains unclear. However, the mechanism underlying the conformational transformation of prion protein is partially understood-in particular, there is strong evidence that copper ions play a significant functional role in prion proteins and in their conformational conversion. Various models of the interaction of copper ions with prion proteins have been proposed for the Cu (II)-binding, cell-surface glycoprotein known as prion protein (PrP). Changes in the concentration of copper ions in the brain have been associated with prion diseases and there is strong evidence that copper plays a significant functional role in the conformational conversion of PrP. Nevertheless, because copper ions have been shown to have both a positive and negative effect on prion disease onset, the role played by Cu (II) ions in these diseases remains a topic of debate. Because of the unique properties of paramagnetic Cu (II) ions in the magnetic field, their interactions with PrP can be tracked even at single atom resolution using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Various NMR approaches have been utilized to study the kinetic, thermodynamic, and structural properties of Cu (II)-PrP interactions. Here, we highlight the different models of copper interactions with PrP with particular focus on studies that use NMR spectroscopy to investigate the role played by copper ions in prion diseases.

Abstract
Methanol conversion to olefins, as an important reaction in C1 chemistry, provides an alternative platform for producing basic chemicals from nonpetroleum resources such as natural gas and coal. Methanol-to-olefin (MTO) catalysis is one of the critical constraints for the process development, determining the reactor design, and the profitability of the process. After the construction and commissioning of the world's first MTO plant by Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, based on high-efficiency catalyst and fluidization technology in 2010, more attention has been attracted for a deep understanding of the reaction mechanism and catalysis principle, which has led to the continuous development of catalysts and processes. Herein, the recent progress in MTO catalyst development is summarized, focusing on the advances in the optimization of SAPO-34 catalysts, together with the development efforts on catalysts with preferential ethylene or propylene selectivity.

Abstract
Significant interest has emerged in the development of nanometer-sized and hierarchical silicoaluminophosphate zeolites (SAPO-34) because of their enhanced accessibility and improved catalytic activity for methanol-to-olefin (MTO) conversion. A series of nanometer-sized SAPO-34 catalysts with tunable hierarchical structures was synthesized in a Al2 O3 /H3 PO4 /SiO2 /triethylamine(TEA)/H2 O system by using a mesoporogen-free nanoseed-assisted method. The nanometer-sized hierarchical SH -3.0 catalyst (TEA/Al2 O3 =3.0) possessed the highest crystallinity, highest abundance of intracrystalline meso-/macropores, and the most suitable acidity among all obtained catalysts, showing the highest ethylene and propylene selectivity of 85.4 %. This is the highest reported selectivity for MTO reactions under similar conditions. Detailed analysis of the coke produced during the reaction revealed that the small-sized methyl-substituted benzene and bulky methyl-substituted pyrene were mainly located inside the crystals instead of on the surface of the crystals, which provided further insight into understanding the deactivation of the SAPO-34 catalyst during MTO reaction. Significantly, the simple and cost-effective synthetic process and superb catalytic performance of the nanometer-sized hierarchical SAPO-34 is promising for their practical large-scale application for MTO conversion.

Abstract
Binderless zeolite macrostructures in the form of ZK-4 microspheres were prepared using anion-exchange resin beads as shape-directing macrotemplates. The particles were synthesized under hydrothermal conditions at different temperatures and treatment times. The influence of the different synthesis parameters was investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, fluorescence X, nitrogen adsorption measurements and 29Si solid-state NMR. Fully crystalline spheres similar in size and shape to the original resin beads were obtained by a hydrothermal treatment at the highest temperatures (150⁻180 °C) for a short treatment time of 24 h. The synthesized microspheres showed to be promising in the molecular decontamination of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Abstract
Amphiphilic surfactants are widely used as templates to synthesize hierarchically structured zeolites due to their multiple functions; however, piloting such new dual-functional templates is limited by their time-consuming nature and high cost. Herein, a simple organic molecule, without a long hydrophobic alkyl chain, was tailored from a gemini-type, poly-quaternary ammonium surfactant, and effectively used as a dual-porogenic template to synthesize hierarchical MTW zeolite. Upon a range of synthesis parameter optimizations, our detailed characterization suggested that the hierarchical MTW zeolite would completely crystallize within 36 hours from the surface to the inside of quasi-spherical particles through in situ consumption of amorphous silicon and aluminum species; much faster than most of the hierarchical MTW zeolites generated by conventional methods. Moreover, the as-prepared hierarchical MTW zeolite exhibited 4 times higher catalytic performance and lifetime of benzene-propene alkylation compared to conventional MTW zeolite, while the introduced crystalline mesopores are of benefit to diffuse reactants, products, and coke depositions. Our strategy broadens the design of new templates in more effective ways to facilely synthesize versatile hierarchical zeolites for diverse applications, especially for those in which macromolecules are involved.

Abstract
Protective desilication of highly siliceous H-ZSM-5 was effectively realized by dissolution and recrystallization in tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) solution. With better balance between dissolution of OH− and recrystallization of TEA+, intracrystalline mesopores could be generated by selective dissolution of Si by the drilling effects of TEAOH on the micropores, and then Si species in the mother liquor near the external surface could be recrystallized into ZSM-5 shell. With a significantly reduced diffusion length provided by the intracrystalline mesopores, TEAOH-treated samples exhibited longer lifetime and higher propylene selectivity than the parent H-ZSM-5 zeolite. The mediumly-treated T-16 h sample possessed the longest MTP lifetime of 140 h, 5.6 times that of the parent H-ZSM-5 zeolite. Furthermore, the coke content and adsorbed methyl benzene species on the T-16 h sample were heavier than those on the parent H-ZSM-5 sample, which were related to the intracrystalline mesopore structure. Protective desilication of highly siliceous H-ZSM-5 was effectively realized by dissolution and recrystallization in tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAOH) solution.![]()

Abstract
The influence of framework substituents (Al3+, Ga3+, Fe3+ and B3+) and morphology (bulk vs. nanometer‐sized sheets) of MFI zeolites on the acidity and catalytic performance in the methanol‐to‐hydrocarbons (MTH) reaction was investigated. The Brønsted acid density and strength decreased in the order Al(OH)Si>Ga(OH)Si>Fe(OH)Si≫B(OH)Si. Pyridine 15N NMR spectra confirmed the differences in the Brønsted and Lewis acid strengths but also provided evidence for site heterogeneity in the Brønsted acid sites. Owing to the lower efficiency with which tervalent ions can be inserted into the zeolite framework, sheet‐like zeolites exhibited lower acidity than bulk zeolites. The sheet‐like Al‐containing MFI zeolite exhibited the greatest longevity as a MTH catalyst, outperforming its bulk [Al]MFI counterpart. Although the lower acidity of bulk [Ga]MFI led to a better catalytic performance than bulk [Al]MFI, the sheet‐like [Ga]MFI sample was found to be nearly inactive owing to lower and heterogeneous Brønsted acidity. All Fe‐ and B‐substituted zeolite samples displayed very low catalytic performance owing to their weak acidity. Based on the product distribution, the MTH reaction was found to be dominated by the olefins‐based catalytic cycle. The small contribution of the aromatics‐based catalytic cycle was larger for bulk zeolite than for sheet‐like zeolite, indicating that shorter residence time of aromatics can explain the lower tendency toward coking and enhanced catalyst longevity.

Interconnected Hierarchical ZSM-5 with Tunable Acidity Prepared by a Dealumination-Realumination Process: A Superior MTP Catalyst. ACS APPLIED MATERIALS & INTERFACES 2017; 9:26096-26106. Abstract
ZSM-5 that uses TPAOH as a template has an Al-rich exterior and defective Si-rich interior; thus, a simple base leaching selectively removed the Si-rich interior while the Al-rich exterior was protected. This catalyst showed no change in stability comparing with parent ZSM-5 during the MTP reaction that was attributed to the enclosed hollow structure and richly acidic outer shell. A preliminary fluorination, however, both removed defective Si-sites and caused distortion in tetrahedral aluminum that made the outer shell susceptible to alkaline treatment. These distorted tetrahedral Al were mostly leached out by NaOH in 1 min. Furthermore, aluminum in the filtrate was slowly redeposited onto the zeolite, serving as external pore-directing agents to control silicon dissolution from the Si-rich interior. This dealumination-realumination alkaline treatment process led to a higher solid yield and a uniform opened-mesopore structure with mesopores around 13 nm in diameter. This material was characterized by SEM, TEM, N2 adsorption, and mercury porosimetry. In addition, NH3-TPD, OH-IR, 27Al MAS NMR, and 1H MAS NMR results demonstrated that the reinserted Al were unlike the framework Al, contributing less to acidity. The dealumination-realumination process, therefore, was also capable of tuning the acidity of the mesoporous ZSM-5. This mesoporous catalyst exhibited a longer lifetime and a higher propylene selectivity than other catalysts with an enclosed mesopore structure.
