Abstract
A highly efficient synthesis of 7-vinyl-6,7-dihydro-4H-furo[3,4-c]pyran derivatives from 2-butene-1,4-diols and 2-(1-alkynyl)-2-alken-1-ones has been achieved with high regio- and diastereoselectivity (dr > 20:1) by Pd-catalyzed tandem heterocyclization/cross-coupling. The π-allyl palladium species Int II generated from 2-butene-1,4-diol by direct cleavage of the C-OH bond is the key to the success in this formal (3 + 3) cycloaddition reaction.

Abstract
An efficient synthesis of benzo[c]phenanthridine alkaloids via a synergistic combination of C-C bond formation and a cycloaromatization reaction is described. Aryl nitrones react with 7-azabenzonorbornadienes in the presence of a Rh(III) catalyst, providing pharmaceutically useful benzo[c]phenanthridine derivatives in good to moderate yields. Using this methodology, highly useful alkaloids such as norfagaronine, norchelerythrine, decarine, norsanguinarine, and nornitidine were prepared in a single step.

Abstract
A novel, facile, and efficient Lewis-acid-catalyzed [4 + 1] annulation protocol for the construction of functionalized polycyclic-fused furans is developed. This methodology is free of transition metals and ligands and provides a rapid synthetic route to divergently orientated polycyclic furans in good yields. In addition, this protocol can also be used to synthesize multisubstituted furans.

Abstract
Oligofurans have attracted great attention in the field of materials over the last decades because of their several advantages, such as strong fluorescence, charge delocalization, and increased solubility. Although unsubstituted or alkyl-substituted oligofurans have been well-established, there is an increasing demand for the development of the aryl decorated oligofuran with structural diversity and unrevealed properties. Here, we report the bottom-up modular construction of chemically and structurally well-defined oligo(arylfuran)s by de novo synthesis of α,β′-bifuran monomers and late-stage bromination, stannylation and subsequent coupling reaction. The preliminary study of the photophysical properties demonstrated that the polarity-sensitive fluorescence emission and high quantum yields in THF solution could be achieved by modulating the aryl groups on the oligo(arylfuran)s. These twisted molecules constitute a new class of oligofuran backbone useful for structure−activities relationship studies. Meanwhile, the experimental studies and calculations showed that tetrafurans have appropriate HOMO energy levels, and could therefore potentially be high-performance p-type semiconductors. Oligofurans have attracted great attention because of their strong fluorescence, charge delocalization, and increased solubility. Here the authors show a bottom-up modular construction of chemically and structurally well-defined oligo(arylfuran)s by de novo synthesis of α,β′-bifuran monomers and late-stage bromination, stannylation and subsequent coupling reaction.

Abstract
In this Perspective, we discuss recent syntheses of 5- and 6-membered aromatic heterocycles via multicomponent reactions (MCRs) that are catalyzed by group 4-8 transition metals. These MCRs can be categorized based on the substrate components used to generate the cyclized product, as well as on common mechanistic features between the catalyst systems. These particular groupings are intended to highlight mechanistic and strategic similarities between otherwise disparate transition metals and to encourage future work exploring related systems with otherwise-overlooked elements. Importantly, in many cases these early- to mid-transition metal catalysts have been shown to be as effective for heterocycle syntheses as the later (and more commonly implemented) group 9-11 metals.

Abstract
Ruthenium-catalyzed cycloadditions to form five-, six-, and seven-membered rings are summarized, including applications in natural product total synthesis. Content is organized by ring size and reaction type. Coverage is limited to processes that involve formation of at least one C-C bond. Processes that are stoichiometric in ruthenium or exploit ruthenium as a Lewis acid (without intervention of organometallic intermediates), ring formations that occur through dehydrogenative condensation-reduction, σ-bond activation-initiated annulations that do not result in net reduction of bond multiplicity, and photochemically promoted ruthenium-catalyzed cycloadditions are not covered.

Abstract
The ruthenium-catalyzed [2 + 2] and homo Diels-Alder [2 + 2 + 2] cycloadditions of norbornadiene with disubstituted alkynes are investigated using density functional theory (DFT). These DFT calculations provide a mechanistic explanation for observed reactivity trends with different functional groups. Alkynyl phosphonates and norbornadiene form the [2 + 2 + 2] cycloadduct, while other functionalized alkynes afford the respective [2 + 2] cycloadduct, in excellent agreement with experimental results. The computational studies on the potential energy profiles of the cycloadditions show that the rate-determining step for the [2 + 2] cycloaddition is the final reductive elimination step, but the overall rate for the [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition is controlled by the initial oxidative cyclization. Two distinct mechanistic pathways for the [2 + 2 + 2] cycloaddition, cationic and neutral, are characterized and reveal that Cp*RuCl(COD) energetically prefers the cationic pathway.

Abstract
Nitrones are important compounds and are highly useful in many aspects. The first part describes the methods for synthesis of nitrones, which are useful and environmentally friendly. Catalytic oxidations, condensations, and other useful reactions are described. The nitrones thus obtained are key intermediates for the synthesis of biologically important nitrogen compounds. The second part describes the fundamental transformations of nitrones, which will provide the strategies and means for the construction of nitrogen compounds. The reactions with nucleophiles or radicals, C-H functionalization, and various addition reactions are described. The last reactions are particularly important for highly selective carbon-carbon bond formations. 1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition reactions are excluded because the size of the review is limited and excellent reviews have been published in Chemical Reviews.
