Self-Healing Graphene-Templated Platinum-Nickel Oxide Heterostructures for Overall Water Splitting

Universal Synthesis of Single-Atom Catalysts by Direct Thermal Decomposition of Molten Salts for Boosting Acidic Water Splitting

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are considered prominent materials in the field of catalysis due to their high metal atom utilization and selectivity. However, the wide-ranging applications of SACs remain a significant challenge due to their complex preparation processes. Here, a universal strategy is reported to prepare a series of noble metal single atoms on different non-noble metal oxides through a facile one-step thermal decomposition of molten salts. By using a mixture of non-noble metal nitrate and a small-amount noble metal chloride as the precursor, noble metal single atoms can be easily introduced into the non-noble metal oxide lattice owing to the cation exchange in the in situ formed molten salt, followed by the thermal decomposition of nitrate anions during the heating process. Analyses using aberration-corrected high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy confirm the formation of the finely dispersed single atoms. Specially, the as-synthesized Ir single atoms (10.97 wt%) and Pt single atoms (4.60 wt%) on the Co3O4 support demonstrate outstanding electrocatalytic activities for oxygen evolution reaction and hydrogen evolution reaction, respectively.

Single Atom Ru Doped Ni2 P/Fe3 P Heterostructure for Boosting Hydrogen Evolution for Water Splitting

Modulating the chemical composition and structure has been considered as one of the most promising strategies for developing high-efficient water splitting catalysts. Here, a single-atom Ru doped Ni2 P/Fe3 P catalyst is synthesized by introducing the dispersed Ru atoms to adjust Ni2 P/Fe3 P heterostructure. Single atom Ru provides effective hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) active sites for boosting catalytic activities. The catalyst with only 0.2 wt.% content of Ru exhibits an overpotential of 19.3 mV at 10 mA cm-2 , which is obviously lower than 146.1 mV of Ni2 P/Fe3 P. Notably, an alkaline overall water electrolyzer based on Ru-Ni2 P/Fe3 P catalysts achieves a cell voltage of 1.47 V and operates over 600 h at 10 mA cm-2 , which is superior to that of benchmark RuO2 //Pt/C (1.61 V). The theoretical calculations further confirm that Ru single atom doping can effectively optimize the hydrogen/water adsorption free energy of the active site and therefore improve the HER activity of heterostructure. This work provides a valuable reference to design high-activity and durability catalyst for water splitting through the double modulation of interface-effect and atomic doping.

Regulable in-situ autoredox for anchoring synergistic Ni/NiO nanoparticles on reduced graphene oxide with boosted alkaline electrocatalytic oxygen evolution

To develop ideal alternatives to noble metal catalysts, transition metal catalysts supported on graphene have been receiving extensive attention in the field of electrochemical energy. In this work, using graphene oxide (GO) and nickel formate as precursors, Ni/NiO synergistic nanoparticles with regulable composition are anchored on reduced graphene oxide (RGO) to prepare Ni/NiO/RGO composite electrocatalysts through in-situ autoredox. Thanks to the synergistic effect of Ni³⁺ active sites and Ni electron donors, the as-prepared Ni/NiO/RGO catalysts exhibit efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution performance in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte. The optimal sample has an overpotential of only 275 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 and a small Tafel slope of 90 mV dec^-1, which are very comparable to those of commercial RuO₂ catalyst. Additionally, the catalytic capacity and structure remain stable after 2000 cyclic voltammetry cycles. For the electrolytic cell assembled with the best-performing sample as anode and commercial Pt/C as cathode, the current density can reach 10 mA cm^-2 at a low potential of 1.57 V and remains stable after 30 h of continuous work. It would be expected that the as-developed Ni/NiO/RGO catalyst with high activity should have broad application prospects.

Introducing High-Valence Iridium Single Atoms into Bimetal Phosphides toward High-Efficiency Oxygen Evolution and Overall Water Splitting

Single atoms are superior electrocatalysts having high atomic utilization and amazing activity for water oxidation and splitting. Herein, this work reports a thermal reduction method to introduce high-valence iridium (Ir) single atoms into bimetal phosphide (FeNiP) nanoparticles toward high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and overall water splitting. The presence of high-valence single Ir atoms (Ir⁴⁺ ) and their synergistic interaction with Ni³⁺ species as well as the disproportionation of Ni³⁺ assisted by Fe collectively contribute to the exceptional OER performance. In specific, at appropriate Ir/Ni and Fe/Ni ratios, the as-prepared Ir-doped FeNiP (Ir₂₅ -Fe₁₆ Ni₁₀₀ P₆₄ ) nanoparticles at a mass loading of only 35 µg cm^-2 show the overpotential as low as 232 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 and activity as high as 1.86 A mg^-1 at 1.5 V versus RHE for OER in 1.0 m KOH. Computational simulations confirm the vital role of high-valence Ir to weaken the adsorption of OER intermediates, favorable for accelerating OER kinetics. Impressively, a Pt/C||Ir₂₅ -Fe₁₆ Ni₁₀₀ P₆₄ two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer affords a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 at a low cell voltage of 1.42 V, along with satisfied stability. An AA battery with a nominal voltage of 1.5 V can drive overall water splitting with obvious bubbles released.

Tube-Sponge-Inspired Hierarchical Electrocatalysts with Boosted Mass and Electron Transfer for Efficient Oxygen Evolution

Hindered gas bubble release and limited electron conducting process represent the major bottlenecks for large-scale electrochemical water splitting. Both the desorption of bubbles and continuous electron transport are achievable on the surfaces of biomimetic catalytic materials by designing multiscale structural hierarchy. Inspired by the tubular structures of the deep-sea sponges, an exceptionally active and binder-free porous nickel tube arrays (PNTA) decorated with NiFe-Zn²⁺ -pore nanosheets (NiFe-P_Zn ) are fabricated. The PNTA facilitate removal of bubbles and electron transfer in the oxygen evolution reaction by reproducing trunks of the sponges, and simultaneously, the NiFe-P_Zn increase the number of catalytic active sites by simulating the sponge epidermis. With improved external mass transfer and interior electron transfer, the hierarchical NiFe-P_Zn @PNTA electrode exhibits superior oxygen evolution reaction performance with an overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 (with a Tafel slope of 50 mV dec^-1 ). Furthermore, this electrocatalytic system recorded excellent reaction stability over 360 h with a constant current density of 100 mA cm^-2 at the potential of 1.52 V (versus RHE). This work provides a new strategy of designing hierarchical electrocatalysts for highly efficient water splitting.

Ionic Liquid/Deep Eutectic Solvent-Mediated Ni-Based Catalysts and Their Application in Water Splitting Electrocatalysis

Nickel-based electrocatalysts have been widely used to catalyze electrocatalytic water splitting. In order to obtain high-performance nickel-based electrocatalysts, using ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents mediated their preparation has received increasing attention. Firstly, ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents can act as media and templates for the preparation of Ni-based nanomaterials with novel structures and excellent catalytic activity. Secondly, ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents can be employed as reactants to participate the synthesis of catalysts. Their participation not only increase the catalytic performance, but also simplify the reaction system, improve reproducibility, reduce emissions, and achieve atomic economy. On the basis of the work of our group, this review gives a detailed description of the impressive progress made concerning ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents in the preparation of nickel-based electrocatalysts according to their roles. We also point out the challenges and opportunities in the field.

Construction of Petal-Like Ag NWs@NiCoP with Three-Dimensional Core-Shell Structure for Overall Water Splitting

High-efficiency, good electrical conductivity and excellent performance electrocatalysts are attracting growing attention in the field of overall water splitting. In order to achieve the desirable qualities, rational construction of the structure and chemical composition of electrocatalysts is of fundamental importance. Herein, petal-like structure Ni0.33Co0.67P shells grown on conductive silver nanowires (Ag NWs) cores as bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting were synthesized through a facile hydrothermal method and phosphorization. The resultant three-dimensional core-shell petal-like structure Ag NWs@Ni0.33Co0.67P possesses excellent catalytic activities in alkaline conditions with the overpotential of 259 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), 121 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and a full cell voltage of 1.64 V to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2. Highly conductive Ag NWs as cores and high surface area petal-like Ni0.33Co0.67P as shells can endow outstanding catalytic performance for the bifunctional electrocatalyst. Thus, the synthetic strategy of the three-dimensional core-shell structure Ag NWs@Ni0.33Co0.67P considerably advances the practice of Ag NWs toward electrocatalysts.
