Tunable Affinity and Molecular Architecture Lead to Diverse Self-Assembled Supramolecular Structures in Thin Films

Multiscale Crystalline Structure of Confined Polypeptoid Films: The Effect of Alkyl Side Chain Branching

We report the effect of alkyl side chain branching on melt-recrystallization of nanoconfined polypeptoid films using poly(N-octyl glycine) (PNOG) and poly(N-2-ethyl-1-hexyl glycine) (PNEHG) as model systems. Upon cooling from the isotropic melt, confined PNOG molecules recrystallize into a near-perfect orthorhombic crystal structure with the board-like molecules stacked face-to-face in the substrate-parallel direction, resulting in long-range ordered wormlike lamellae that occupy the entire film. By contrast, rod-like PNEHG molecules bearing branched N-2-ethyl-1-hexyl side chains stack into a columnar hexagonal mesophase with their backbones oriented parallel to the substrates, forming micron-sized sheaf-like superstructures under confinement, exposing large areas of empty spaces in the film. These findings highlight the effect of alkyl side chain branching on the packing motif and multiscale crystalline structure of polypeptoids under a nanoconfined geometry.

Hierarchically Chiral Nanostructures Self-Assembled from Nanoparticle Tethered Block Copolymers

Chiral nanostructures of nanoparticle assemblies have attracted tremendous interest for their fascinating functional properties. Herein, through theoretical simulations, we show that nanoparticle tethered block copolymers can self-assemble into hierarchically chiral nanostructures. Two-fold helices are formed in the hierarchically chiral nanostructures: the diblock copolymers form helical supercylinders while the nanoparticles arrange into chiral assemblies wrapped around the helical supercylinders. The hierarchically chiral nanostructures can be formed in a large parameter window. Circular dichroism calculations demonstrate that the coexistence of polymeric helices and chiral nanoparticle assemblies improves the chiroptical activity. These findings can provide guidelines for designing hierarchically ordered chiral nanostructures with advanced functional properties. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Screw dislocation-induced pyramidal crystallization of dendron-like macromolecules featuring asymmetric geometry

We report herein that dendron-shaped macromolecules AB n crystallize into well-ordered pyramid-like structures from mixed solvents, instead of spherical motifs with curved structures, as found in the bulk. The design of the asymmetric molecular architecture and the choice of mixed solvents are applied as strategies to manipulate the crystallization process. In mixed solvents, the solvent selection for the Janus macromolecule and the existence of dominant crystalline clusters contribute to the formation of flat nanosheets. Whereas during solvent evaporation, the bulkiness of the asymmetric macromolecules easily creates defects within 2D nanosheets which lead to their spiral growth through screw dislocation. The size of the nanosheets and the growth into 2D nanosheets or 3D pyramidal structures can be regulated by the solvent ratio and solvent compositions. Moreover, macromolecules of higher asymmetry generate polycrystals of lower orderliness, probably due to higher localized stress.

Block-copolymer-like self-assembly behavior of mobile-ligand grafted ultra-small nanoparticles

We use coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations to study the self-assembly behavior of polyoxometalate (POM) nanoparticles (NPs) decorated with mobile polymer ligands under melt conditions. We demonstrate that due to the mobile nature of the grafted ligands on the NP surface, NPs have the ability to expose a part of their surfaces, leading to a block-copolymer-like self-assembly behavior. The exposed NP surface serves as one block and the grafted ligand polymers as another. This system has a strong ability to self-assemble into long-range ordered structures such as block copolymers due to large incompatibility between POM and ligand polymers, i.e., POM NPs can form lamellar, cylindrical, and spherical structures, which are consistent with previous experimental results. More importantly, these ordered structures are on the sub-10 nm scale, which is an important requirement for many applications. At low graft density, we find a new inverse-cylindrical structure formation where polymers form cylinders and POMs form a continuous network structure. A full self-assembly phase diagram is constructed which illustrates rules to manipulate the self-assembly structures of NPs decorated with mobile polymer ligands. We hope that these computational results will be useful for the new design of nanostructures with improved optical or electronic functions.

Phase Behavior and Phase Diagram of Polystyrene-b-Poly(Perfluorooctylethyl Acrylates)

Fluorocontaining polymers bearing special properties are unique and important materials in modern society. In this work, we focused on the phase behavior and phase diagram of poly(styrene-block-perfluorooctylethyl acrylate) with a volume fraction varying from 0.2 to 0.8. Small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy showed the phase formation in the sequence of hexagonally packed cylinders (HEX) to lamellar layers (LAM) to inverse hexagonally packed cylinders (iHEX) in this series of block polymers. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction experiments proved that the fluorodomains of the LAM phases and the matrix of iHEX phases contained layered structures formed by the crystallization of fluorosegments. During heating, the self-assembled lattice remained intact even after the melting of fluorodomain, with barely changed lattice parameters. Such hierarchical structural formation was understood by chain conformation and domain interaction, which may provide new insight into the molecular design of advanced materials.

Precise synthesis of double-armed polymers with fullerene C60 at the junction for controlled architecture

We report the first successful synthesis of the polymer-attached 1,2-hydrofullerene and the double-armed 1,4-bisadducts in a regioselective manner via controlled radical reactions.

Polymer-guided assembly of inorganic nanoparticles

The self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles is of great importance in realizing their enormous potentials for broad applications due to the advanced collective properties of nanoparticle ensembles. Various molecular ligands (e.g., small molecules, DNAs, proteins, and polymers) have been used to assist the organization of inorganic nanoparticles into functional structures at different hierarchical levels. Among others, polymers are particularly attractive for use in nanoparticle assembly, because of the complex architectures and rich functionalities of assembled structures enabled by polymers. Polymer-guided assembly of nanoparticles has emerged as a powerful route to fabricate functional materials with desired mechanical, optical, electronic or magnetic properties for a broad range of applications such as sensing, nanomedicine, catalysis, energy storage/conversion, data storage, electronics and photonics. In this review article, we summarize recent advances in the polymer-guided self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles in both bulk thin films and solution, with an emphasis on the role of polymers in the assembly process and functions of resulting nanostructures. Precise control over the location/arrangement, interparticle interaction, and packing of inorganic nanoparticles at various scales are highlighted.

Photoinduced repetitive separation of a supramolecular assembly composed of an amphiphilic diarylethene mixture

A supramolecular assembly composed of a two-component mixture of amphiphilic diarylethenes, which have octyloxycarbonyl and N-octylcarbamoyl groups, showed a unique macroscopic transformation upon irradiation with UV light and subsequent standing in the dark. Unlike the pure compounds, the assembly was repetitively separated into a blue sphere and a red-purple sparse structure. Both the blue sphere and the sparse structure turned into colorless spheres upon irradiation with visible light and the divided colorless spheres showed the same response to UV and visible light. Phase diagrams based on the change in absorption spectra upon temperature change suggested that the transformation originates from a LCST transition. In the 0.5 : 0.5 mixture, in contrast to the pure compounds, the transition temperature sharply changed at around 50% of the fraction of the closed-ring isomer. TEM imaging showed that the 0.5 : 0.5 mixture with high photoisomerization yield formed a 10 nm-sized network. Judging from the phase diagram and TEM images, the separation is understood as the local phase transition of the regions with a high fraction of the closed-ring isomer.

Multiscale Self-Assembly of Mobile-Ligand Molecular Nanoparticles for Hierarchical Nanocomposites

Multiscale hierarchical morphologies are greatly desired for fabricating nanocomposites with tunable macroscopic properties, but challenges remain in precisely manipulating the spatial arrangement of nanoparticles in polymer matrices across multiple length scales. Here, we demonstrate a class of mobile-ligand nanoparticle system built upon 1 nm anionic polyoxometalate molecular nanoparticles and cationic terminated polymer chains by electrostatic interaction. The highly rearrangeable polymer chains can serve as mobile ligands to direct the polyoxometalates to align into sub-10 nm anisotropic superlattice-like nanoarrays in the bulk state. Moreover, these nanoarrays can further serve as structural units to assemble into hierarchically ordered morphologies in polymer matrices, e.g., percolated networks over hundreds of micrometers which are comprised of cylindrically packed polyoxometalate superlattices down to sub-10 nm scale. These hierarchical morphologies enable the nanocomposites with reinforced mechanical performance. The presented mobile-ligand approach can provide a paradigm to design functional polymer nanocomposites with improved properties such as mechanical reinforcement and collective optical and electronic functions.

Synthesis of Stimuli-Responsive Heterofunctional Dendrimer by Passerini Multicomponent Reaction

We report the synthesis of a structurally diverse amphiphilic dendrimer with oxidation and ultraviolet light-sensitive groups incorporated in the dendrimer interior. Convergent synthesis is utilized by reacting branched repeating units with a nonbranched functional molecule by two synthetic strategies, Passerini multicomponent reaction and azide-alkyne cycloaddition reaction. The periphery of dendrimer was functionalized by methoxy poly(ethylene glycol) to obtain a dendrimer with a hydrophobic core and hydrophilic peripheral chains. The G2-PEG dendrimer characterized by NMR, GPC, and MALDI-TOF MS for structural integrity and oxidation- and photo-triggered degradations of the G2-PEG dendrimer was investigated. The self-assembled morphology of the dendrimer in the presence of organic dye was also investigated by TEM and DLS analyses, together with dissipative particle dynamics simulation. The encapsulation of dye molecules in self-assembled nanospheres of the dendrimer and their responsive releases, triggered by the efficient disassembly of a dendrimer, have been demonstrated.

Effect of Chain Architecture on Phase Behavior of Giant Surfactant Constructed from Nanoparticle Monotethered by Single Diblock Copolymer Chain

The phase behaviors of the giant surfactant constructed from a nanoparticle (NP) monotethered by a single AB diblock copolymer chain were investigated by combining self-consistent field theory and density functional theory. Three types of giant surfactants with different chain architectures were constructed via changing the location of NP on the diblock copolymer chain. The simulation results show that the introduction of the NP can induce phase separation of the originally disordered AB diblock copolymers, and phase diagrams as a function of the chain length ratio of A block and the attraction between A block and NP were constructed for the three giant surfactant systems. Via changing the location of NP from the end of B block to the AB-junction point and to the end of A block, the conformational entropies of the systems gradually decrease, leading to a significant difference in phase behaviors. When the NP is tethered to the end of B block, the giant surfactant system has the smallest phase-separation region in the phase diagram, and the resulting ordered structures have the smallest feature sizes. However, when the NP is tethered to the end of A block, the giant surfactant system has the largest phase-separation region, as well as the largest feature sizes of ordered structures. Moreover, the distributions of the NPs within microphase-separated domain can be well tailored by changing the chain length ratio of A block or the attraction between A block and NP in all of the three giant surfactant systems. These findings provide the guideline for the preparation of polymer-nanoparticle composites with controllable morphologies, desirable feature sizes, and precise NP distributions in experiments.

Highly Asymmetric Phase Behaviors of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxane-Based Multiheaded Giant Surfactants

This work reports the molecular design, synthesis, and systematic study on the bulk self-assembly behaviors of three series of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)-based multiheaded giant surfactants XDPOSS-PS_n (X = 2, 3, and 4), which are composed of two, three, or four hydrophilic hydroxyl-group-functionalized DPOSS cages attached via one junction point to a hydrophobic polystyrene (PS) chain. These series of hybrid polymeric amphiphiles with precisely defined chemical structure and controllable molecular architecture are synthesized by the sequential usage of "click" reactions. By tuning molecular weights of the PS tail, we established full phase diagrams of XDPOSS-PS_n as a function of the volume fractions of PS chains (V_f^PS). We found that the self-assembled structures were greatly influenced by the molecular architecture. Strikingly, our results showed that the lamellar morphology, which usually existed at relatively symmetric compositions in common diblock copolymers, became the thermodynamically stable phase in the 3DPOSS-PS_n and 4DPOSS-PS_n samples even at an asymmetric composition up to V_f^PS = 0.842, with the ratio between the thicknesses of PS and DPOSS lamellae up to 5.32. This unusual phenomenon induced by molecular architectural variation could be explained by the large cross-sectional area of DPOSS cages at the nanophase-separated domain interface and high elastic deformation energy of clustered DPOSS cages which have relatively rigid conformation. The unique bulk self-assembly behaviors in our POSS-based multiheaded giant surfactants provide insights in developing hybrid nanomaterials toward unconventional nanostructures.

Molecular Dynamics Study of Polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) Asymmetric Diblock Copolymer Systems

Two polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PS-b-PEO) diblock copolymers differing in molecular mass (49 and 78 kDa) but possessing the same PEO cylindrical morphology are examined to elucidate their molecular dynamics. Of particular interest here is the molecular motion of the PEO blocks involved in the rigid amorphous fraction (RAF). An analysis of complementary thermal calorimetry and X-ray scattering data confirms the presence of microphase-separated morphology as well as semicrystalline structure in each copolymer. Molecular motion within the copolymer systems is monitored by dielectric and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies. The results reported herein reveal the existence of two local Arrhenius-type processes attributed to the noncooperative local motion of PEO segments involved in fully amorphous and rigid amorphous PEO microphases. In both systems, two structural relaxations governed by glass-transition phenomena are identified and assigned to cooperative segmental motion in the fully amorphous phase (the α process) and the RAF (the α_c process). We measure the temperature dependence of the dynamics associated with all of the processes mentioned above and propose that these local processes are associated with corresponding cooperative segmental motion in both copolymer systems. In marked contrast to the thermal activation of the α process as discerned in both copolymers, the α_c process appears to be a sensitive probe of the copolymer nanostructure. That is, the copolymer with shorter PEO blocks exhibits more highly restricted cooperative dynamics of PEO segments in the RAF, which can be explained in terms of the greater constraint imposed by the glassy PS matrix on the PEO blocks comprising smaller cylindrical microdomains.

Ionic Complexes of Metal Oxide Clusters for Versatile Self-Assemblies

The combination of rational design of building components and suitable utilization of driving force affords spontaneous molecular assemblies with well-defined nanostructure and morphology over multiple length scales. The serious challenges in constructing assemblies with structural advantages for the realization of functions programmed into the building components usually lie ahead since the process that occurs does not always follow the expected roadmap in the absence of external intervention. Thus, prefabricated intermediates that help in governing the target self-assemblies are developed into a type of unique building blocks. Metal oxide cluster polyanions are considered as a type of molecular nanoclusters with size scale and structural morphology similar to those of many known inorganic particles and clusters but possess distinctive characteristics. Following the understanding of these clusters in self-assembly and the rationalization of their most efficient design strategy and approach, the obtained fundamental principles can also be applied in common nanoparticle- and cluster-based systems. On the other hand, the deliberate synergy offered by organic countercations that support the self-assembly of these clusters greatly expands the opportunity for the functionalization of complex building units via control of multiple interactions. The ionic combination of the inorganic clusters with hydrophilicity and the cationic organic component with hydrophobicity leads to discrete properties of the complexes. Significantly, the core-shell structure with rigid-flexible features and amphiphilicity will pave the way for hierarchical self-assemblies of the obtained complexes, while the intrinsic characteristics of the metal oxide clusters can be modulated through external physicochemical stimuli. Within this context, over the past decade we have extensively explored the ionic combination of inorganic polyanionic clusters with cationic organic amphiphiles and devoted our efforts to establishing the general rules and structure-property relationships of the formed complexes for constructing self-assemblies at the interface, in solution, and in solid matrixes. Specific interest has been focused on the functional synergy deriving from the incompatible components in highly organized self-assemblies. In this Account, we describe the recent progress on the ionic complexation of polyoxometalate clusters with cationic amphiphiles and the construction of diverse self-assembled nanostructures. First, the fundamental structural characteristics and molecular geometries of the prepared complexes are analyzed. The construction principle and diversity of the self-assembly based on the complexes and the smart stimuli response are then discussed, subject to the adjustment of various non-covalent interactions occurring in the assemblies. Subsequently, we enumerate the functional applications of the ionic complexes assembling into organic, inorganic, and even biological matrixes. The inspiration from the construction of ionic complexation and self-assembly in this Account provides vivid profiles for the design of hybrid materials involving nanoclusters and/or nanoparticles with rich potentials in addition to polyoxometalate chemistry.

Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Shape Amphiphiles Based on POSS-Dendron Conjugates

Shape has been increasingly recognized as an important factor for self-assembly. In this paper, a series of shape amphiphiles have been built by linking polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) and a dendron via linkers of different lengths. Three conjugates of octahedral silsesquioxanes (T₈-POSS) and dendron are designed and synthesized and are referred to as isobutyl T₈-POSS gallic acid derivatives (BPOSS-GAD-1, BPOSS-GAD-2, BPOSS-GAD-3). These samples have been fully characterized by ¹H-NMR, ¹³C-NMR, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry to establish their chemical identity and purity. Driven by different interactions between POSS and dendron, ordered superstructure can be found upon self-assembly. The stabilities and structures of these samples are further studied by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), and molecular simulations. The results show that their melting points range from 74 °C to 143 °C and the molecular packing schemes in the assemblies can form lamellar structure of BPOSS-GAD-3 as determined by the different linkers.

Extremely asymmetric phase diagram of homopolymer-monotethered nanoparticles: Competition between chain conformational entropy and particle steric interaction

The phase behaviors of homopolymer-monotethered nanoparticles (HMNs) in melt are investigated via a theoretical method combining self-consistent field theory for polymers and density functional theory for hard spheres. An extremely asymmetric phase diagram is observed: (i) microphases are only possible for the volume fraction of the tethered polymer f_A > 0.35; (ii) in addition to lamellar phase, the system can only self-assemble into various morphologies with a polymer-rich matrix, including gyroid phase, cylindrical phase, and spherical phase. In the frame of this theory, the critical point for HMNs' microphase separation is significantly lower than that of linear diblock copolymers. Furthermore, the characteristic length of microphase-separated structures of HMNs is much smaller than that of linear diblock copolymers with the same molecular weight. Our calculation results on morphologies and characteristic length agree well with recent simulations and experimental observations.

Morphological Evolution of Self-Assembled Structures Induced by the Molecular Architecture of Supra-Amphiphiles

A series of telechelic supramolecular amphiphiles [POSS-Azo₈@(β-CD-PDMAEMA)_1→8] was accomplished by orthogonally coupling the multiarm host polymer β-cyclodextrin-poly(dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) (β-CD-PDMAEMA) with an octatelechelic guest molecule azobenzene modified-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS-Azo₈) under different host-guest ratios. These telechelic supramolecular amphiphiles possess a rigid core and flexible corona. Increasing the multiarm host polymer coupled onto the rigid POSS core made the molecular architecture tend to be symmetrical and spherical. POSS-Azo₈@[β-CD-PDMAEMA]_1→8 could self-assemble into diverse morphologies evolving from spherical micelles, wormlike micelles, and branched aggregates to bowl-shaped vesicles. Distinct from the traditional linear amphiphilic polymers, we discovered that the self-assembly of POSS-Azo₈@[β-CD-PDMAEMA]_1→8 was dominantly regulated by their molecular architectures instead of hydrophilicity, which has also been verified using computer simulation results.

Hierarchical superstructures of norbornene-based polymers depending on dendronized side-chains

For understanding the self-assembly behaviours of norbornene-based main-chain polymers depending on side-chain pendants, a series of polynorbornenes containing the programmed dendrons is newly designed and successfully synthesized via ring opening metathesis polymerization.
