Mode Coupling in Plasmonic Heterodimers Probed with Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy

Plasmonic couplings in Ag-Au heterodimers

The plasmonic coupling between silver (Ag) and gold (Au) nanoparticles (NPs) under four polarization modes was examined: a longitudinal mode (L-mode), where the electric field of a linearly polarized incident light parallels the dimer axis, and three transverse modes (T-modes), where the electric field of the light is perpendicular to the dimer axis. The coupling was studied using the discrete dipole approximation followed by an in-house postprocessing code that determines the extinction (Qext), absorption (Qabs), and near-field (Qnf) spectra from the individual NPs as well as the whole system. In agreement with the literature results, the extinction/absorption spectra of the whole dimer have two peaks, one near the Ag localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) region and the other at the Au LSPR region, with the peak at Ag LSPR being reduced in all modes and the peak at Au LSPR being red-shifted and increased in the L-mode but not in the T-modes. It is further shown that the scattering at the Ag LSPR region is reduced and becomes less than the isolated Ag NPs, but the absorption at the Ag LSPR is increased and becomes greater than the isolated Ag NPs for the 50 nm Ag-Au heterodimer. This suggests that the scattering from Ag NPs is being reabsorbed by the neighboring Au NPs due to the interband electronic transition in Au at that wavelength range. The Qext from the individual NP in the heterodimer shows the presence of the Fano profile on the Au NP but not on the Ag NP. This phenomenon was further investigated by using a dielectric particle (DP) placed near the Ag or Au NPs. The Fano profile appears in the absorbing DP spectra placed near either Ag or Au NPs. However, the Fano profile is masked upon further increases in the refractive index value of the DP particle. This explains the absence of a Fano profile on the Ag NPs in the Ag-Au heterodimer. The large near-field enhancement on both Ag and Au NPs at the Au plasmonic wavelength in the L-mode for large NPs was investigated through a DP-Au system. The large enhancement was shown to arise from a large imaginary component of the DP refractive index and a small real component. Through examination of both the near- and far-field properties of the individual NPs as well as the whole system and examinations of DP-Ag and DP-Au systems, our study provides a new understanding of the couplings between Ag and Au NPs.

Active Site Engineering on Plasmonic Nanostructures for Efficient Photocatalysis

Plasmonic nanostructures have shown immense potential in photocatalysis because of their distinct photochemical properties associated with tunable photoresponses and strong light-matter interactions. The introduction of highly active sites is essential to fully exploit the potential of plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis, considering the inferior intrinsic activities of typical plasmonic metals. This review focuses on active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures with enhanced photocatalytic performance, wherein the active sites are classified into four types (i.e., metallic sites, defect sites, ligand-grafted sites, and interface sites). The synergy between active sites and plasmonic nanostructures in photocatalysis is discussed in detail after briefly introducing the material synthesis and characterization methods. Active sites can promote the coupling of solar energy harvested by plasmonic metal to catalytic reactions in the form of local electromagnetic fields, hot carriers, and photothermal heating. Moreover, efficient energy coupling potentially regulates the reaction pathway by facilitating the excited state formation of reactants, changing the status of active sites, and creating additional active sites using photoexcited plasmonic metals. Afterward, the application of active site-engineered plasmonic nanostructures in emerging photocatalytic reactions is summarized. Finally, a summary and perspective of the existing challenges and future opportunities are presented. This review aims to deliver some insights into plasmonic photocatalysis from the perspective of active sites, expediting the discovery of high-performance plasmonic photocatalysts.

Mass-determining role in the electrophoretic separation of colloidal plasmonic nanoparticle oligomers

Gel electrophoresis techniques have been commonly applied in sieving plasmonic nanoparticle oligomers, while the intrinsic role in determining their phoresis velocity differences through the gel remains debatable. In this work, we explore the components and yield in each gel band after bundling two rationally designed types of nanoparticles in a system for electrophoretic separation. All results indicate that the mass property of plasmonic oligomers plays an essential role in determining their phoresis velocity divergences during separation. Further theoretical simulations reveal that the grounds for the mass-determining role stemmed from the random inelastic collisions among the oligomers and the gel-network microchannel. Moreover, under the guidance of such a mass-determining role, it is easy to achieve the direct electrophoretic separation of hetero-structured plasmonic dimers with high purity and high yield. This work will not only facilitate the precise nano-engineering of complex plasmonic oligomers with unique optical properties, but also might remove the obstacles toward their industrial manufacture with high purity.

Optical Ultracompact Directional Antennas Based on a Dimer Nanorod Structure

Controlling directionality of optical emitters is of utmost importance for their application in communication and biosensing devices. Metallic nanoantennas have been proven to affect both excitation and emission properties of nearby emitters, including the directionality of their emission. In this regard, optical directional nanoantennas based on a Yagi-Uda design have been demonstrated in the visible range. Despite this impressive proof of concept, their overall size (~λ²/4) and considerable number of elements represent obstacles for the exploitation of these antennas in nanophotonic applications and for their incorporation onto photonic chips. In order to address these challenges, we investigate an alternative design. In particular, we numerically study the performance of a recently demonstrated "ultracompact" optical antenna based on two parallel gold nanorods arranged as a side-to-side dimer. Our results confirm that the excitation of the antiphase mode of the antenna by a nanoemitter placed in its near-field can lead to directional emission. Furthermore, in order to verify the feasibility of this design and maximize the functionality, we study the effect on the directionality of several parameters, such as the shape of the nanorods, possible defects in the dimer assembly, and different positions and orientations of the nanoemitter. We conclude that this design is robust to structural variations, making it suitable for experimental upscaling.

Asymmetric Nanofractures Determined the Nonreciprocal Peeling for Self-Aligned Heterostructure Nanogaps and Devices

Planar heterostructures composed of two or more adjacent structures with different materials are a kind of building blocks for various applications in surface plasmon resonance sensors, rectifiers, photovoltaic devices, and ambipolar devices, but their reliable fabrication with controllable shape, size, and positioning accuracy remains challenging. In this work, we propose a concept for fabricating planar heterostructures via directional stripping and controlled nanofractures of metallic films, with which self-aligned, multimaterial, multiscale heterostructures with arbitrary geometries and sub-20 nm gaps can be obtained. By using a split ring as the template, the asymmetric nanofracture of the deposited film at the split position results in nonreciprocal peeling of the film in the split ring. Compared to the conventional processes, the final heterostructures are defined only by their outlines, thus providing the ability to fabricate complex heterostructures with higher resolutions. We demonstrate that this method can be used to fabricate heterodimers, multimaterial oligomers, and multiscale asymmetrical electrodes. An Ag-MoS₂-Au photodiode with a strong rectification effect is fabricated based on the nanogap heterostructures prepared by this method. This technology provides a unique and reliable approach to define nanogap heterostructures, which are supposed to have potential applications in nanoelectronics, nanoplasmonics, nano-optoelectronics, and electrochemistry.

Bimetallic Janus Nanocrystals: Syntheses and Applications

Bimetallic Janus nanocrystals have received considerable interest in recent years owing to their unique properties and niche applications. The side-by-side distribution of two distinct metals provides a flexible platform for tailoring the optical and catalytic properties of nanocrystals. First, a brief introduction to the structural features of bimetallic Janus nanocrystals, followed by an extensive discussion of the synthetic approaches, is given. The strategies and experimental controls for achieving the Janus structure, as well as the mechanistic understandings, are specifically discussed. Then, a number of intriguing properties and applications enabled by the Janus nanocrystals are highlighted. Finally, this article is concluded with future directions and outlooks with respect to both syntheses and applications of this new class of functional nanomaterials.

The effects of bending on plasmonic modes in nanowires and planar structures

In this work, we investigate the effects of bends on the surface plasmon resonances in nanowires (NWs) and isolated edges of planar structures using electron energy loss spectroscopy experiments and theoretical calculations. Previous work showed that the sharp bends in NWs do not affect their resonant modes. Here, we study previously overlooked effects and analyze systematically the evolution of resonant modes for several bending angles from 30° to 180°, showing that bending can have a significant effect on the plasmonic response of a nanostructure. In NWs, the modes can experience significant energy shifts that depend on the aspect ratio of the NW and can cause mode intersection and antinode bunching. We establish the relation between NW modes and edge modes and show that bending can even induce antinode splitting in edge modes. This work demonstrates that bends in plasmonic planar nanostructures can have a profound effect on their optical response and this must be accounted for in the design of optical devices.

Plasmonic Coupling Architectures for Enhanced Photocatalysis

Plasmonic photocatalysis is a promising approach for solar energy transformation. Comparing with isolated metal nanoparticles, the plasmonic coupling architectures can provide further strengthened local electromagnetic field and boosted light-harvesting capability through optimal control over the composition, spacing, and orientation of individual nanocomponents. As such, when integrated with semiconductor photocatalysts, the coupled metal nanostructures can dramatically promote exciton generation and separation through plasmonic-coupling-driven charge/energy transfer toward superior photocatalytic efficiencies. Herein, the principles of the plasmonic coupling effect are presented and recent progress on the construction of plasmonic coupling architectures and their integration with semiconductors for enhanced photocatalytic reactions is summarized. In addition, the remaining challenges as to the rational design and utilization of plasmon coupling structures are elaborated, and some prospects to inspire new opportunities on the future development of plasmonic coupling structures for efficient and sustainable light-driven reactions are raised.

Near-Field Mapping of Photonic Eigenmodes in Patterned Silicon Nanocavities by Electron Energy-Loss Spectroscopy

Recently, there has been significant interest in using dielectric nanocavities for the controlled scattering of light, owing to the diverse electromagnetic modes that they support. For plasmonic systems, electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is now an established method enabling structure-optical property analysis at the scale of the nanostructure. Here, we instead test its potential for the near-field mapping of photonic eigenmodes supported in planar dielectric nanocavities, which are lithographically patterned from amorphous silicon according to standard photonic principles. By correlating results with finite element simulations, we demonstrate how many of the EELS excitations can be directly corresponded to various optical eigenmodes of interest for photonic engineering. The EELS maps present a high spatial definition, displaying intensity features that correlate precisely to the impact parameters giving the highest probability of modal excitation. Further, eigenmode characteristics translate into their EELS signatures, such as the spatially and energetically extended signal of the low Q-factor electric dipole and nodal intensity patterns emerging from excitation of toroidal and second-order magnetic modes within the nanocavity volumes. Overall, the spatial-spectral nature of the data, combined with our experimental-simulation toolbox, enables interpretation of subtle changes in the EELS response across a range of nanocavity dimensions and forms, with certain simulated resonances matching the excitation energies within ±0.01 eV. By connecting results to far-field simulations, perspectives are offered for tailoring the nanophotonic resonances via manipulating nanocavity size and shape.

Hybrid Metal-Dielectric Metasurfaces for Refractive Index Sensing

Hybrid metal-dielectric nanostructures have recently gained prominence because they combine strong field enhancement of plasmonic metals and the several low-loss radiation channels of dielectric resonators, which are qualities pertaining to the best of both worlds. In this work, an array of such hybrid nanoantennas is successfully fabricated over a large area and utilized for bulk refractive index sensing with a sensitivity of 208 nm/RIU. Each nanoantenna combines a Si cylinder with an Al disk, separated by a SiO₂ spacer. Its optical response is analyzed in detail using the multipoles supported by its subparts and their mutual coupling. The nanoantenna is further modified experimentally with an undercut in the SiO₂ region to increase the interaction of the electric field with the background medium, which augments the sensitivity to 245 nm/RIU. A detailed multipole analysis of the hybrid nanoantenna supports our experimental findings.

Multicomponent Plasmonic Nanoparticles: From Heterostructured Nanoparticles to Colloidal Composite Nanostructures

Plasmonic nanostructures possessing unique and versatile optoelectronic properties have been vastly investigated over the past decade. However, the full potential of plasmonic nanostructure has not yet been fully exploited, particularly with single-component homogeneous structures with monotonic properties, and the addition of new components for making multicomponent nanoparticles may lead to new-yet-unexpected or improved properties. Here we define the term "multi-component nanoparticles" as hybrid structures composed of two or more condensed nanoscale domains with distinctive material compositions, shapes, or sizes. We reviewed and discussed the designing principles and synthetic strategies to efficiently combine multiple components to form hybrid nanoparticles with a new or improved plasmonic functionality. In particular, it has been quite challenging to precisely synthesize widely diverse multicomponent plasmonic structures, limiting realization of the full potential of plasmonic heterostructures. To address this challenge, several synthetic approaches have been reported to form a variety of different multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles, mainly based on heterogeneous nucleation, atomic replacements, adsorption on supports, and biomolecule-mediated assemblies. In addition, the unique and synergistic features of multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles, such as combination of pristine material properties, finely tuned plasmon resonance and coupling, enhanced light-matter interactions, geometry-induced polarization, and plasmon-induced energy and charge transfer across the heterointerface, were reported. In this review, we comprehensively summarize the latest advances on state-of-art synthetic strategies, unique properties, and promising applications of multicomponent plasmonic nanoparticles. These plasmonic nanoparticles including heterostructured nanoparticles and composite nanostructures are prepared by direct synthesis and physical force- or biomolecule-mediated assembly, which hold tremendous potential for plasmon-mediated energy transfer, magnetic plasmonics, metamolecules, and nanobiotechnology.

Electronic Structure-Dependent Surface Plasmon Resonance in Single Au-Fe Nanoalloys

The relationship between composition and plasmonic properties in noble metal nanoalloys is still largely unexplored. Yet, nanoalloys of noble metals, such as gold, with transition elements, such as iron, have unique properties and a number of potential applications, ranging from nanomedicine to magneto-plasmonics and plasmon-enhanced catalysis. Here, we investigate the localized surface plasmon resonance at the level of the single Au-Fe nanoparticle by applying a strategy that combines experimental measurements using near field electron energy loss spectroscopy with theoretical studies via a full wave numerical analysis and density functional theory calculations of electronic structure. We show that, as the iron fraction increases, the plasmon resonance is blue-shifted and significantly damped, as a consequence of the changes in the electronic band structure of the alloy. This allows the identification of three relevant phenomena to be considered in the design and realization of any plasmonic nanoalloy, specifically: the appearance of new states around the Fermi level; the change in the free electron density of the metal; and the blue shift of interband transitions. Overall, this study provides new opportunities for the control of the optical response in Au-Fe and other plasmonic nanoalloys, which are useful for the realization of magneto-plasmonic devices for molecular sensing, thermo-plasmonics, bioimaging, photocatalysis, and the amplification of spectroscopic signals by local field enhancement.

Progress in the Utilization Efficiency Improvement of Hot Carriers in Plasmon-Mediated Heterostructure Photocatalysis

The effect of plasmon-induced hot carriers (HCs) enables the possibility of applying semiconductors with wide band gaps to visible light catalysis, which becomes an emerging research field in environmental protections. Continued efforts have been made for an efficient heterostructure photocatalytic process with controllable behaviors of HCs. Recently, it has been discovered that the improvement of the utilization of HCs by band engineering is a promising strategy for an enhanced catalytic process, and relevant works have emerged for such a purpose. In this review, we give an overview of the recent progress relating to optimized methods for designing efficient photocatalysts by considering the intrinsic essence of HCs. First, the basic mechanism of the heterostructure photocatalytic process is discussed, including the formation of the Schokkty barrier and the process of photocatalysis. Then, the latest studies for improving the utilization efficiency of HCs in two aspects, the generation and extraction of HCs, are introduced. Based on this, the applications of such heterostructure photocatalysts, such as water/air treatments and organic transformations, are briefly illustrated. Finally, we conclude by discussing the remaining bottlenecks and future directions in this field.

Optical resonance coupling in compositionally different nanocube–nanosphere heterodimers

Optical properties of bimetallic compositional heterodimers

Many important applications of nanometer-sized metal objects arise from the light-induced interactions between their component structures. Here, we demonstrate through state-of-the-art quantum mechanical simulations, the optical response of bimetallic heterodimers (two closely adjacent nanoparticles) composed of Al and Na nanoparticles. We calculate the optical response using time-dependent density functional theory. We found that Al-Na bimetallic heterodimers show rich optical features, strongly depending on the size heterogeneity and interparticle gap distances. In particular, we observe remarkable optical field enhancements and creation of new low-energy absorption peaks with respect to the single Al and Na nanoparticles. We believe that our results may influence the design of future nanoparticle-based optical nanoantenna.

Capillary assembly as a tool for the heterogeneous integration of micro- and nanoscale objects

During the past decade, capillary assembly in topographical templates has evolved into an efficient method for the heterogeneous integration of micro- and nano-scale objects on a variety of surfaces. This assembly route has been applied to a large spectrum of materials of micrometer to nanometer dimensions, supplied in the form of aqueous colloidal suspensions. Using systems produced via bulk synthesis affords a huge flexibility in the choice of materials, holding promise for the realization of novel superior devices in the fields of optics, electronics and health, if they can be integrated into surface structures in a fast, simple, and reliable way. In this review, the working principles of capillary assembly and its fundamental process parameters are first presented and discussed. We then examine the latest developments in template design and tool optimization to perform capillary assembly in more robust and efficient ways. This is followed by a focus on the broad range of functional materials that have been realized using capillary assembly, from single components to large-scale heterogeneous multi-component assemblies. We then review current applications of capillary assembly, especially in optics, electronics, and in biomaterials. We conclude with a short summary and an outlook for future developments.

Programmable Assembly of Hybrid Nanoclusters

Hybrid nanoparticle clusters (often metallic) are interesting plasmonic materials with tunable resonances and a near-field electromagnetic enhancement at interparticle junctions. Therefore, in recent years, we have witnessed a surge in both the interest in these materials and the efforts to obtain them. However, a versatile fabrication of hybrid nanoclusters, that is, combining more than one material, still remains an open challenge. Current lithographical or self-assembly methods are limited to the preparation of hybrid clusters with up to two different materials and typically to the fabrication of hybrid dimers. Here, we provide a novel strategy to deposit and align not only hybrid dimers but also hybrid nanoclusters possessing more complex shapes and compositions. Our strategy is based on the downscaling of sequential capillarity-assisted particle assembly over topographical templates. As a proof of concept, we demonstrate dimers, linear trimers, and 2D nanoclusters with programmable compositions from a range of metallic nanoparticles. Our process does not rely on any specific chemistry and can be extended to a large variety of particles and shapes. The template also simultaneously aligns the hybrid (often anisotropic) nanoclusters, which could facilitate device integration, for example, for optical readout after transfer to other substrates by a printing step. We envisage that this new fabrication route will enable the assembly and positioning of complex hybrid nanoclusters of different functional nanoparticles to study coupling effects not only locally but also at larger scales for new nanoscale optical devices.

Self-Similarity of Plasmon Edge Modes on Koch Fractal Antennas

We investigate the plasmonic behavior of Koch snowflake fractal geometries and their possible application as broadband optical antennas. Lithographically defined planar silver Koch fractal antennas were fabricated and characterized with high spatial and spectral resolution using electron energy loss spectroscopy. The experimental data are supported by numerical calculations carried out with a surface integral equation method. Multiple surface plasmon edge modes supported by the fractal structures have been imaged and analyzed. Furthermore, by isolating and reproducing self-similar features in long silver strip antennas, the edge modes present in the Koch snowflake fractals are identified. We demonstrate that the fractal response can be obtained by the sum of basic self-similar segments called characteristic edge units. Interestingly, the plasmon edge modes follow a fractal-scaling rule that depends on these self-similar segments formed in the structure after a fractal iteration. As the size of a fractal structure is reduced, coupling of the modes in the characteristic edge units becomes relevant, and the symmetry of the fractal affects the formation of hybrid modes. This analysis can be utilized not only to understand the edge modes in other planar structures but also in the design and fabrication of fractal structures for nanophotonic applications.
