Theoretical Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Low-Valent Carbon Species: A ∼6 eV Range of Ionization Potentials among Carbenes, Ylides, and Carbodiphosphoranes

Inverse Photoemission Spectroscopy of Coinage Metal Corroles: Comparison with Solution-Phase Electrochemistry

A combined direct and inverse photoemission study of coinage metal corroles suggests that the latter technique, in favorable cases, can provide some additional information relative to electrochemical measurements. Thus, whereas inverse photoemission spectroscopy (IPES) provides relative electron affinities for electron addition to different unoccupied orbitals, electrochemical reduction potentials shed light on the energetics of successive electron additions. While all three coinage metal triphenylcorrole (TPC) complexes exhibit similar ionization potentials, they exhibit dramatically different inverse photoemission spectra. For Cu[TPC], the lowest-energy IPES feature (0.74 eV) is found to be exceedingly close to the Fermi level; it is significantly higher for Ag[TPC] (1.65 eV) and much higher for Au[TPC] (2.40 eV). These differences qualitatively mirror those observed for electrochemical reduction potentials and are related to a partially metal-centered LUMO in the case of Cu- and Ag[TPC] and a fully corrole-based LUMO in the case of Au[TPC]; the latter orbital corresponds to the LUMO+1 in the case of Ag[TPC].

Theoretical Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Metal-Metal Quintuple Bonds: Relativity-Driven Reordering of Frontier Orbitals

A recent reinvestigation of the gas-phase photoelectron spectra of Group 6 metal-metal quadruple-bonded complexes with scalar-relativistic DFT calculations showed that common exchange-correlation functionals reproduce the lowest ionization potentials in a semiquantitative manner. The finding encouraged us to undertake a DFT study of metal-metal quintuple bonds in a set of bisamidinato complexes with the formula MI 2[HC(NR)2]2 (M = Cr, Mo, W; R = H, Ph, 2,6-iPr2C6H3) and idealized D 2h symmetry. Scalar-relativistic OLYP/STO-TZ2P calculations indicated significant shifts in valence orbital energies among the three metals, which translate to lower first ionization potentials, higher electron affinities, and lower HOMO-LUMO gaps for the W complexes relative to their Cr and Mo counterparts. These differences are largely attributable to substantially larger relativistic effects in the case of tungsten relative to those of its lighter congeners.

Theoretical Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Quadruple-Bonded Dimolybdenum(II,II) and Ditungsten(II,II) Paddlewheel Complexes: Performance of Common Density Functional Theory Methods

We have revisited the gas-phase photoelectron spectra of quadruple-bonded dimolybdenum(II,II) and ditungsten(II,II) paddlewheel complexes with modern density functional theory methods and obtained valuable calibration of four well-known exchange-correlation functionals, namely, BP86, OLYP, B3LYP*, and B3LYP. All four functionals were found to perform comparably, with discrepancies between calculated and experimental ionization potentials ranging from <0.1 to ∼0.5 eV, with the lowest errors observed for the classic pure functional BP86. All four functionals were found to reproduce differences in ionization potentials (IPs) between analogous Mo2 and W2 complexes, as well as large, experimentally observed ligand field effects on the IPs, with near-quantitative accuracy. The calculations help us interpret a number of differences between analogous Mo2 and W2 complexes through the lens of relativistic effects. Thus, relativity results in not only significantly lower IPs for the W2 complexes but also smaller HOMO-LUMO gaps and different triplet states relative to their Mo2 counterparts.

From Diaminosilylenes to Silapyramidanes: Making Sense of the Stability of Divalent Silicon Compounds

Since the discovery of decamethylsilicocene over three decades ago, chemists have successfully isolated a variety of divalent silicon compounds by orchestrating steric and electronic effects to their advantage. Two broad strategies of electronic stabilization appear to have been widely deployed, namely, π-conjugation as in diaminosilylenes and π-complexation as in decamethylsilicocene and silapyramidanes. Herein, we attempted to identify quantitative metrics for the electronic stabilization of silylenes. Singlet-triplet gaps and electron affinities, both physical observables, proved useful in this regard. Thus, the most stable silylenes exhibit unusually large singlet-triplet gaps and very low or negative gas-phase electron affinities. Both metrics signify low electrophilicity, i.e., a low susceptibility to nucleophilic attack. The chemical significance of the ionization potential associated with the Si-based lone pair, on the other hand, remains unclear.
