Responsive nanostructures from aqueous assembly of rigid-flexible block molecules

Supramolecular assembly of dendronized diacetylenes into thermoresponsive chiral fibers and their covalent fixation through topochemical polymerization

By combination of dendritic topological structures with photopolymerizable diacetylene, here we report on supramolecular chiral assembly of the dendronized diacetylenes in water. These dendronized diacetylenes are constituted with three-fold dendritic oligoethylene glycols (OEGs), bridged with a dipeptide from phenylalanine and glycine. These dendronized amphiphiles exhibit intensive propensity to aggregate in water and form helical fibers, which show characteristic thermoresponsive behavior with phase transition temperatures dominated by hydrophilicity of the dendritic OEGs. Topochemical polymerization of these supramolecular fibers through UV irradiation transfers them into the covalent helical dendronized polydiacetylenes. Chirality of these dendronized polydiacetylenes can be mediated through the thermally-induced phase transitions, but is also intriguingly dependent on vortex via stirring. Through stirring the solutions, chiralities of the dendronized polydiacetylenes are inverted, which can be reversibly recovered after keeping still the solution. Hydrogels are formed from these dendronized diacetylenes through concentration-enhanced interactions between the supramolecular fibers. Their mechanical properties can be greatly increased through thermally-enhanced interactions between the fibers with storage moduli increased from 20 Pa to a few hundred Pa. In addition, through photo-polymerization, the supramolecular fibers are transferred into covalent dendronized polydiacetylenes, and the corresponding hydrogels show much improved mechanical properties with storage moduli about 10 kPa.

Umbrella-Shaped Amphiphiles: Internal Alkylation of an Aromatic Micelle and Its Impact on Cavity Features

To develop new hybrid micelles with alkyl/polyaromatic core-shell structures, we synthesized umbrella-shaped amphiphiles bearing a bent anthracene dimer with a linear alkyl chain (i.e., octyl and hexadecyl groups). The amphiphiles quantitatively assemble into spherical micelles (~2-3 nm in core diameter), possessing an alkylated cavity surrounded by a polyaromatic framework, in water. The alkylation significantly enhances the stability of the micellar structures against dilution (up to 9 μM) and heat (up to >120 °C). The highly condensed hexadecyl core of the hybrid micelle, as indicated by solvatochromic guest probes, displays increased uptake ability toward large alkylated metallodyes. Interestingly, efficient uptake of aromatic macrocycles (i.e., [n]cycloparaphenylenes) by the present micelle provides pseudorotaxane-shaped host-guest composites with high emissivity (ΦF=up to 35 %). Internal multi-alkylation of an aromatic micelle can thus successfully enhance its assembly stability/guest uptake functions.

Increasing Dimensionality in Self-Assembly: Toward Two-Dimensional Supramolecular Polymers

Different approaches to achieve 2D supramolecular polymers, as an alternative to the covalent bottom-up approaches reported for the preparation of 2D materials, are reviewed. The significance of the operation of weak non-covalent forces to induce a lateral growth of a number of self-assembling units is collected. The examples of both thermodynamically and kinetically controlled formation of 2D supramolecular polymers showed in this review demonstrate the utility of this strategy to achieve new 2D materials with biased morphologies (nanosheets, scrolls, porous surfaces) and showing elegant applications like chiral recognition, enantioselective uptake or asymmetric organic transformations. Furthermore, elaborated techniques like seeded or living supramolecular polymerizations have been demonstrated to give rise to complex 2D nanostructures.

Seed-Induced Living Two-Dimensional (2D) Supramolecular Polymerization in Water: Implications on Protein Adsorption and Enzyme Inhibition

In biological systems, programmable supramolecular frameworks characterized by coordinated directional non-covalent interactions are widespread. However, only a small number of reports involve pure water-based dynamic supramolecular assembly of artificial π-amphiphiles, primarily due to the formidable challenge of counteracting the strong hydrophobic dominance of the π-surface in water, leading to undesired kinetic traps. This study reveals the pathway complexity in hydrogen-bonding-mediated supramolecular polymerization of an amide-functionalized naphthalene monoimide (NMI) building block with a hydrophilic oligo-oxyethylene (OE) wedge. O-NMI-2 initially produced entropically driven, collapsed spherical particles in water (Agg-1); however, over a span of 72 h, these metastable Agg-1 gradually transformed into two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets (Agg-2), favoured by both entropy and enthalpy contributions. The intricate self-assembly pathways in O-NMI-2 enable us to explore seed-induced living supramolecular polymerization (LSP) in water for controlled synthesis of monolayered 2D assemblies. Furthermore, we demonstrated the nonspecific surface adsorption of a model enzyme, serine protease α-Chymotrypsin (α-ChT), and consequently the enzyme activity, which could be regulated by controlling the morphological transformation of O-NMI-2 from Agg-1 to Agg-2. We delve into the thermodynamic aspects of such shape-dependent protein-surface interactions and unravel the impact of seed-induced LSP on temporally controlling the catalytic activity of α-ChT.

Self-Assembly of Amphiphilic PDI and NDI Derivatives with Opposite Thermoresponsive Fluorescent Behaviors in Aqueous Solution

This work presents a study of the thermally induced aggregation of perylene diimide (PDI) and naphthalene diimide (NDI) derivatives modified with oligo ethylene glycol (OEG) chains in aqueous solution. Water-soluble and flexible OEG side chains were introduced into the π-core of glutamate-modified NDI and PDI structures, and the aggregation process was modulated by heating or cooling in water. Interestingly, a rare opposite temperature response of fluorescent behavior from the two amphiphilic chromophores was revealed, in which the PDI exhibited fluorescent enhancement, while fluorescent quenching upon temperature increase was observed from the NDI assembly. The mechanism of thermally induced aggregation is clearly explained by studies with various spectroscopic techniques including UV-visible, fluorescence, 1H NMR, 2D NMR spectroscopy, and SEM observation as well as control experiments operated in DMSO solution. It is found that although similar J-aggregates were formed by both amphiphilic chromophores in aqueous solution, the temperature response of the aggregates to temperature was opposite. The degree of PDI aggregation decreased, while that of NDI increased upon temperature rising. This research paves a valuable way for understanding the complicated supramolecular behaviors of amphiphilic chromophores.

Grinding-Induced Water Solubility Exhibited by Mechanochromic Luminescent Supramolecular Fibers

Most mechanochromic luminescent compounds are crystalline and highly hydrophobic; however, mechanochromic luminescent molecular assemblies comprising amphiphilic molecules have rarely been explored. This study investigated mechanochromic luminescent supramolecular fibers composed of dumbbell-shaped 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene-based amphiphiles without any tetraethylene glycol (TEG) substituents or with two TEG substituents. Both amphiphiles formed water-insoluble supramolecular fibers via linear hydrogen bond formation. Both compounds acquired water solubility when solid samples composed of supramolecular fibers are ground. Grinding induces the conversion of 1D supramolecular fibers into micellar assemblies where fluorophores can form excimers, thereby resulting in a large redshift in the fluorescence spectra. Excimer emission from the ground amphiphile without TEG chains is retained after dissolution in water. The micelles are stable in water because hydrophilic dendrons surround the hydrophobic luminophores. By contrast, when water is added to a ground amphiphile having TEG substituents, fragmented supramolecular fibers with the same molecular arrangement as the initial supramolecular fibers are observed, because fragmented fibers are thermodynamically preferable to micelles as the hydrophobic arrays of fluorophores are covered with hydrophilic TEG chains. This leads to the recovery of the initial fluorescent properties for the latter amphiphile. These supramolecular fibers can be used as practical mechanosensors to detect forces at the mesoscale.

pH-Modulated 1D Hierarchical Self-Assembly of a Brush-Like Poly-Para-Phenylene Homopolymer

The controllable self-assembly of conjugated homopolymers, especially homopolymers without other segments (a prerequisite for phase separation), which can afford chances to achieve tunable optical/electronic properties, remains a great challenge due to their poor solubility and has remained rarely documented. Herein, a conjugated homopolymer (DPPP-COOH) is synthesized, which has a unique brush-like structure with a conjugated dendritic poly-para-phenylene (DPPP) backbone and alkyl-carboxyl side chains at both edges of the backbone. The introduction of carboxyl makes the brush-like homopolymer exhibit pH-modulated 1D hierarchical self-assembly behavior in dilute solution, and allows for flexible morphological regulation of the assemblies, forming some uncommon superstructures including ultralong nanowires (at pH 7), superhelices (at pH 10) and "single-wall" nanotubes (at pH 13), respectively. Furthermore, the good aqueous dispersibility and 1D feature endow the superstructures formed in a high-concentration neutral solution with high broad-spectrum antibacterial performance superior to that of many conventional 1D materials.

Two-Dimensional Supramolecular Polymerization of a Bis-Urea Macrocycle into a Brick-Like Hydrogen-Bonded Network

We report on a dendronized bis-urea macrocycle 1 self-assembling via a cooperative mechanism into two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets formed solely by alternated urea-urea hydrogen bonding interactions. The pure macrocycle self-assembles in bulk into one-dimensional liquid-crystalline columnar phases. In contrast, its self-assembly mode drastically changes in CHCl3 or tetrachloroethane, leading to 2D hydrogen-bonded networks. Theoretical calculations, complemented by previously reported crystalline structures, indicate that the 2D assembly is formed by a brick-like hydrogen bonding pattern between bis-urea macrocycles. This assembly is promoted by the swelling of the trisdodecyloxyphenyl groups upon solvation, which frustrates, due to steric effects, the formation of the thermodynamically more stable columnar macrocycle stacks. This work proposes a new design strategy to access 2D supramolecular polymers by means of a single non-covalent interaction motif, which is of great interest for materials development.

Highly Fluorescent Supramolecular Nanoring Composed of Bent-Shaped Cyanostilbene Derivatives and Cucurbit[8]urils

Supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) made of organic guest molecule and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) in aqueous solution have great potential for diverse applications. Herein, we designed highly fluorescent zero-dimensional (0D) nano-ring SOF with CB[8] as a host and novel bent-shaped cyanostilbene guest. This host-guest complex successfully formed macrocyclic hexamer and showed significantly enhanced fluorescence (Φ_F =68 %) compared to non-assembled monomer (Φ_F =2 %). Unlike other SOFs, this 0D SOF could be dispersed uniformly without bundling phenomenon in water.

Two-Dimensional Peptide Assembly via Arene-Perfluoroarene Interactions for Proliferation and Differentiation of Myoblasts

Supramolecular assembly based on aromatic interactions can provide well-defined nanostructures with an understanding of intermolecular interactions at the molecular level. The peptide assembly via a supramolecular approach can overcome the inherent limitations of bioactive peptides, such as proteolytic degradations and rapid internalizations into the cytosol. Although extensive research has been carried out on supramolecular peptide materials with a two-dimensional (2D) structure, more needs to be reported on biological activity studies using well-defined 2D peptide materials. Physical and chemical properties of the 2D peptide assembly attributed to their large surface area and flexibility can show low cytotoxicity, enhanced molecular loading, and higher bioconjugation efficiency in biological applications. Here, we report supramolecular 2D materials based on the pyrene-grafted amphiphilic peptide, which contains a peptide sequence (Asp-Gly-Glu-Ala; DGEA) that is reported to bind to the integrin α2β1 receptor in 2D cell membranes. The addition of octafluoronaphthalene (OFN) to the pyrene-grafted peptide could induce a well-ordered 2D assembly by face-centered arene-perfluoroarene stacking. The DGEA-peptide 2D assembly with a flat structure, structural stability against enzymatic degradations, and a larger size can enhance the proliferation and differentiation of muscle cells via continuous interactions with cell membrane receptors integrin α2β1 showing a low intracellular uptake (15%) compared to that (62%) of the vesicular peptide assembly. These supramolecular approaches via the arene-perfluoroarene interaction provide a strategy to fabricate well-defined 2D peptide materials with an understanding of assembly at the molecular level for the next-generation peptide materials.

Introduction of Ferrocene as a Facilitator for the Construction of Supramolecular Polymers

Proper monomer design is the key to enhancing the strength of noncovalent interactions between the molecules toward the efficient formation of supramolecular polymers (SPs). We have designed and synthesized 1,n'-disubstituted ferrocene-azobenzene-long alkyl chains, Fc(CONH-Azo-TDP)₂ , to afford SPs with a high probability. The design exploits the ''molecular ball-bearing'' property of the ferrocene core, which allows two azobenzene arms to rotate in the planes of cyclopentadienyl rings, generating the most suitable molecular conformation required for SP formation. This ferrocene monomer formed a supergel consisting of SPs supported by strong intermolecular (H-bonding and π-π stacking) interactions and higher enthalpy gain than the reference molecules, where the central ferrocene core was replaced by flexible aliphatic as well as rigid benzene linkers. The molecular conformation involved in SPs, the strength of noncovalent interactions, and the process of supramolecular polymerization were investigated through NMR, UV-Vis, XRD and TEM studies. The results demonstrate that ferrocene may act as a good modulator for constructing efficient SPs.

Lamellar assembly and nanostructures of amphiphilic boron(iii) diketonates through suitable non-covalent interactions

Cooperative assemblies of amphiphilic boron(iii) diketonate compounds, which are found to be driven by the formation of non-covalent π–π and hydrophobic interactions in THF–water solution, result in the construction of nanosheet of lamellar packing.

Hierarchical Materials from High Information Content Macromolecular Building Blocks: Construction, Dynamic Interventions, and Prediction

Hierarchical materials that exhibit order over multiple length scales are ubiquitous in nature. Because hierarchy gives rise to unique properties and functions, many have sought inspiration from nature when designing and fabricating hierarchical matter. More and more, however, nature's own high-information content building blocks, proteins, peptides, and peptidomimetics, are being coopted to build hierarchy because the information that determines structure, function, and interfacial interactions can be readily encoded in these versatile macromolecules. Here, we take stock of recent progress in the rational design and characterization of hierarchical materials produced from high-information content blocks with a focus on stimuli-responsive and "smart" architectures. We also review advances in the use of computational simulations and data-driven predictions to shed light on how the side chain chemistry and conformational flexibility of macromolecular blocks drive the emergence of order and the acquisition of hierarchy and also on how ionic, solvent, and surface effects influence the outcomes of assembly. Continued progress in the above areas will ultimately usher in an era where an understanding of designed interactions, surface effects, and solution conditions can be harnessed to achieve predictive materials synthesis across scale and drive emergent phenomena in the self-assembly and reconfiguration of high-information content building blocks.

Controllable Synthesis of Hybrid Dendrimers Composed of a Carbosilane Core and an Aromatic Shell: Does Size Matter?

The controllable synthesis of novel hybrid dendrimers composed of flexible and rigid components was accomplished via effective Cu-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition ("click") reaction between azide-functionalized carbosilane cores of two generations and monoethynyl-substituted hexaphenylbenzene dendron. A comprehensive analysis of the thermal and phase behavior of dendrimers allows us to detect a similar performance of dendrimers of both generations which, in our opinion, can be due to the similar ratio of rigid and flexible blocks in the dendrimers regardless the generation of carbosilane cores. The propensity to crystallization and ordering after the annealing procedure was confirmed by DSC and SWAXS. We found that hybrid dendrimers have a tendency to order depending on their constituents of different structures. This is in contrast to homogeneous dendrimers whose propensity to order is determined by the dendrimer molecule as a whole.

Thermoreversible Polymorph Transitions in Supramolecular Polymers of Hydrogen-Bonded Squaramides

Hydrogen-bonded squaramide (SQ) supramolecular polymers exhibit uncommon thermoreversible polymorph transitions between particle- and fiber-like nanostructures. SQs 1-3, with different steric bulk, self-assemble in solution into particles (AggI) upon cooling to 298 K, and SQs 1 and 2, with only one dendronic group, show a reversible transformation into fibers (AggII) by further decreasing the temperature to 288 K. Nano-DSC and UV/Vis studies on SQ 1 reveal a concentration-dependent transition temperature and ΔH for the AggI-to-AggII conversion, while the kinetic studies on SQ 2 indicate the on-pathway nature of the polymorph transition. Spectroscopic and theoretical studies reveal that these transitions are triggered by the molecular reorganization of the SQ units changing from slipped to head-to-tail hydrogen bonding patterns. This work unveils the thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of reversible polymorph transitions that are of interest to develop stimuli-responsive systems.

Impact of the Hydrogen-Bonding Functional Group on Hydrogelation of Amphiphilic Naphthalene-diimide Derivatives and Nonspecific Protein Adsorption

This manuscript reports the effect of hydrogen-bonding functionality on the supramolecular assembly of naphthalene-diimide (NDI)-derived amphiphilic building blocks in water. All the molecules contain a central NDI chromophore, functionalized with a hydrophilic oligo-oxyethylene (OE) wedge in one arm and a phenyl group on the opposite arm. They differ by a single H-bonding functionality, which links the NDI chromophore and the phenyl moiety. The H-bonding functionalities are amide, thioamide, urea, and urethane in NDI-A, NDI-TA, NDI-U, and NDI-UT, respectively. All of these molecules exhibit π-stacking in water, as evident from their distinct UV/vis absorption spectra when compared to that of the monomeric dye in THF. However, among these four, only NDI-A and NDI-TA show hydrogelation, while the other two precipitate out of the medium. The NDI-A hydrogel also exhibits transient stability and leads to a crystalline precipitate within ∼5 h. Only NDI-TA produces stable transparent hydrogel with the entangled fibrillar morphology that is typical for gelators. Both NDI-A and NDI-TA showed a thermoresponsive property with a lower critical solution temperature of about 41-42 °C. Powder XRD studies show a parallel orientation for NDI-A and an antiparallel orientation for NDI-TA. Computational studies support this experimental observation and indicate that the NDI-A assembly is highly stabilized by strong H-bonding among the amide groups and π-stacking interaction in the parallel orientation. On the other hand, due to weak H-bonding among the thioamide groups, the binding energy of the parallelly oriented NDI-TA was significantly lower and the optimized structure was disordered. Instead, its antiparallel orientation was more stable, with criss-cross aligned H-bonding interactions and π-π interactions between adjacent aromatic rings. The NDI-TA hydrogel with less ordered OE chains on the surface showed prominent adsorption of serum protein BSA. In sharp contrast, NDI-A did not exhibit any notable interaction with BSA, as evident from the ITC studies.

Light-Responsive Hexagonal Assemblies of Triangular Azo Dyes

The rational design of small building block molecules and understanding their molecular assemblies are of fundamental importance in creating new stimuli-responsive organic architectures with desired shapes and functions. Based on the experimental results of light-induced conformational changes of four types of triangular azo dyes with different terminal functional groups, as well as absorption and fluorescence characteristics associated with their molecular assemblies, we report that aggregation-active emission enhancement (AIEE)-active compound (1) substituted with sterically crowded tert-butyl (t-Bu) groups showed approximately 35% light-induced molecular switching and had a strong tendency to assemble into highly stable hexagonal structures with AIEE characteristics. Their sizes were regulated from nanometer-scale hexagonal rods to micrometer-scale sticks depending on the concentration. This is in contrast to other triangular compounds with bromo (Br) and triphenylamine (TPA) substituents, which exhibited no photoisomerization and tended to form flexible fibrous structures. Moreover, non-contact exposure of the fluorescent hexagonal nanorods to ultraviolet (UV) light led to a dramatic hexagonal-to-amorphous structure transition. The resulting remarkable variations, such as in the contrast of microscopic images and fluorescence characteristics, were confirmed by various microscopic and spectroscopic measurements.

Construction of a supramolecular framework consisting of cucurbit[8]uril and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine

We report the supramolecular self-assembly of cucurbit[8]uril(Q[8]) and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)piperazine inclusion complex. The complex is cultured in 3 M hydrochloric acid solution under CdCl2 induction conditions to obtain a new crystal, the structure of which was characterized by X-ray single-crystal diffraction. The results show that the crystal belongs to the monoclinic crystal system with a C2/m space group. The host–guest interaction ratio of Q[8] and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl) piperazine is 1:2.

Thermoresponsive Supramolecular Assemblies from Dendronized Amphiphiles To Form Fluorescent Spheres with Tunable Chirality

Balance between self-association of structural units and self-repulsion from crowding-induced steric hindrance accounts for the supramolecular assembly of the amphiphilic entities to form ordered structures, and solvation provides a toolbox to conveniently modulate the assemblies through differential interactions to various structural units. Here we report solvation-modulated supramolecular chiral assembly in aqueous solutions of amphiphilic dendronized tetraphenylethylenes (TPEs) with three-folded dendritic oligoethylene glycols (OEGs) through dipeptide Ala-Gly linkage. These dendronized amphiphiles can form supramolecular spheres with enhanced supramolecular chirality, which is tunable and dependent on solvation. These nanosized spherical aggregates exhibit thermoresponsive behavior, and their cloud point temperatures are dependent on mixed solvent of water and THF. The phase transition temperatures increase with water fractions due to water-driven shifting of OEG moieties from interiors of the aggregates to their peripheries. Furthermore, the thermally induced dehydration and collapse of OEG moieties mediate the reversible aggregation and deaggregation between the spheres, imparting tunable aggregation-induced fluorescent emission (AIE) and supramolecular chirality. Both experimental results and molecular dynamic simulations have highlighted that reversible chirality transformations of the amphiphilic dendronized assemblies mediated by solvation through change solvent quality or thermally dehydration are dependent on the balance between interactions of OEG dendrons with TPE moieties and with the solvent molecules.

Dendronized polydiacetylenes via photo-polymerization of supramolecular assemblies showing thermally tunable chirality

Transformation of supramolecular chiral assemblies into covalent polymers integrates characteristics of supramolecular chemistry together with covalent entities, leading to fabrication of covalent chiral materials through versatile supramolecular chiral assemblies. Here, we report supramolecular assembly of an amphiphilic dendronized 10,12-pentacosadiynoic amide (PCDA) in aqueous solutions to form twisted ribbons, which were transferred into covalent dendronized polydiacetylenes (PDAs) via photopolymerization. These supramolecular dendronized PCDA and the corresponding covalent dendronized PDAs showed unprecedent thermoresponsive properties. The thermally-induced dehydration and aggregations tuned reversibly their chiralities, which can be visually inspected through colour changes.

Supramolecular fibrillation of peptide amphiphiles induces environmental responses in aqueous droplets

One-dimensional (1D) supramolecular polymers are commonly found in natural and synthetic systems to prompt functional responses that capitalise on hierarchical molecular ordering. Despite amphiphilic self-assembly being significantly studied in the context of aqueous encapsulation and autopoiesis, very little is currently known about the physico-chemical consequences and functional role of 1D supramolecular polymerisation confined in aqueous compartments. Here, we describe the different phenomena that resulted from the chemically triggered supramolecular fibrillation of synthetic peptide amphiphiles inside water microdroplets. The confined connection of suitable dormant precursors triggered a physically autocatalysed chemical reaction that resulted in functional environmental responses such as molecular uptake, fusion and chemical exchange. These results demonstrate the potential of minimalistic 1D supramolecular polymerisation to modulate the behaviour of individual aqueous entities with their environment and within communities.

A pH, thermal and light triple-stimuli responsive micellar solution formed by a cationic surfactant and trans-o-hydroxycinnamic acid

Controlling the viscoelastic characteristics of wormlike micelles is of great significance to both basic theory and practical applications. In this article, a novel multi-stimuli responsive wormlike micellar solution was prepared by mixing cationic surfactant 3-hexadecyloxy-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium bromide (R₁₆HTAB) with trans-o-hydroxycinnamic acid (OHCA). Rheological studies, nuclear magnetic resonance (¹H-NMR) spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, and cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) were utilized to investigate the wormlike micellar system's multi-responsive activity. The results showed that the self-assembled structure and viscoelasticity of the mixed system could be regulated by pH, temperature, and light irradiation. With the increasing trans-OHCA concentration, η₀ of the mixed solution increases first and then decreases and the turning point is presented at 30 mM trans-OHCA, indicating the transformation of spherical micelles to wormlike micelles, and then to short micelles. The microstructure of the mixed systems could be reversibly altered by adjusting the pH between 6.41 and 3.90, which was ascertained by cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The relationship of temperature and η₀ obeys the Arrhenius law, attributed to the decreasing micellar contour length. η₀ of a 40 mM R₁₆HTAB/15 mM OHCA solution sharply increases after UV irradiation, mainly because the cis-isomer could insert into the micelle more easily, and the transition mechanism was studied by UV-vis and ¹H NMR. The multi-responsive self-assembled system may open a new vista for building multi-functional aggregates to adapt to various environmental changes.

Thermodynamic Insights into Protein Adsorption on Supramolecular Assemblies of π-Amphiphiles

Nonspecific adsorption of proteins on the surface of nanocarriers plays a critical role in their cellular uptake and other biological functions. This article reports vesicular assemblies of two π-amphiphiles (NDI-1 and NDI-2) and thermodynamic aspects of their interaction with bovine serum albumin (BSA). Both contain a hydrophobic naphthalene-diimide (NDI) core and two oligo-oxyethylene (OE) wedges but differ by the presence of the hydrazide group in NDI-1. NDI-2 exhibits a constricted π-stacking and enthalpy-driven adsorption of BSA. In contrast, NDI-1 exhibits a stronger interaction due to enhanced entropy contribution. It is postulated that a tight packing of NDI chromophores in NDI-2 results in an inadequate space in the corona, leading to the dehydration of OE chains, which contributes to the observed enthalpy-driven binding. On the other hand, due to H-bonding along the direction of π-stacking in NDI-1, an enhanced interchromophoric distance provides more space in the shell, resulting in less dehydration of the OE chains, which results in an entropy gain from the BSA binding-induced release of water from the OE chains. Intercalation of an electron-rich pyrene in the electron-deficient NDI-1 stack further reduces the grafting density of the OE chains, resulting in negligible BSA adsorption, similar to a stealth polymer. A correlation can be seen between the thermodynamic landscape of the protein adsorption and the trend of their lower critical solution temperature (LCST), which follows the order NDI-1 + Py < NDI-1 < NDI-2.

Self-Assembly of a Pyridine-Based Amphiphile Complexed with Regioisomeric Dihydroxy Naphthalenes into Supramolecular Nanotubes with Different Inner Diameters

A pyridine-based amphiphile complexed with 1,5-, 1,6-, 2,6-, or 2,7-dihydroxy naphthalene self-assembled in water to form nanotubes with inner diameters of 46, 38, 24, 18, and 11 nm in which the naphthalene molecules formed J-type aggregates. In contrast, the amphiphile complexed with 1,2-, 1,3-, 1,4-, 1,7-, 1,8-, or 2,3-dihydroxy naphthalene formed nanofibers in which the naphthalene molecules formed H-type aggregates. The inner diameter of the nanotubes strongly depended on the regioisomeric dihydroxy naphthalene. UV-vis, fluorescence, infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and differential scanning calorimetry showed that nanotubes with smaller inner diameters had weaker intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the tilted amphiphiles complexed with the naphthalene molecules within the membrane walls and showed larger Stokes shifts in the excimer fluorescence of the naphthalene moiety. These findings should be useful not only for fine-tuning the inner diameters of supramolecular nanotubes but also for controlling the aggregation states of functional aromatic molecules to generate nanostructures with useful optical and electronic properties in water.

Re-entrant Photoinduced Morphological Transformation and Temperature-Dependent Kinetic Products of a Rectangular Amphiphilic Diarylethene Assembly

An amphiphilic rectangular-shaped photochromic diarylethene bearing two hydrophobic alkyl chains and two hydrophilic tri(ethylene glycol) chains was synthesized, and its photoinduced morphological transformation in water was investigated. Two unexpected phenomena were revealed in the course of the experiments: a re-entrant photoinduced macroscopic morphological transformation and temperature-dependent kinetic products of supramolecular assembly. When the pure closed-ring isomer was dispersed in water, a re-entrant photoinduced morphological transformation, that is, a photoinduced transition from the hydrated phase to the dehydrated phase and then back to the hydrated phase, was observed by optical microscopy upon irradiation with green light at 20 °C; this was interpreted by the V-shaped phase diagram of the LCST transition. The aqueous assembly of the pure closed-ring isomer was controlled by changing the temperature; specifically, rapid cooling to 15 and 5 °C gave J and H aggregates, respectively, as the kinetic products. The thermodynamic product at both temperatures was a mixture of mostly H aggregate with a small amount of J aggregate. This behavior was rationalized by the temperature-dependent potential energy surface of the supramolecular assembly.

Stimuli-Responsive AIEgens

The unique advantages and the exciting application prospects of AIEgens have triggered booming developments in this area in recent years. Among them, stimuli-responsive AIEgens have received particular attention and impressive progress, and they have been demonstrated to show tremendous potential in many fields from physical chemistry to materials science and to biology and medicine. Here, the recent achievements of stimuli-responsive AIEgens in terms of seven most representative types of stimuli including force, light, polarity, temperature, electricity, ion, and pH, are summarized. Based on typical examples, it is illustrated how each type of systems realize the desired stimuli-responsive performance for various applications. The key work principles behind them are ultimately deciphered and figured out to offer new insights and guidelines for the design and engineering of the next-generation stimuli-responsive luminescent materials for more broad applications.

Switchable Aromatic Nanopore Structures: Functions and Applications

Nanopore structures in nature play a crucial role in performing many sophisticated functions such as signal transduction, mass transport, ion channel, and enzyme reaction. Inspired by pore-forming proteins, considerable effort has been made to design self-assembling molecules that are able to form nanostructures with internal pores in aqueous media. These nanostructures offer ample opportunity for applications because their internal pores are able to perform a number of unique functions required for a confined nanospace. However, unlike nanopore assembly in nature, the synthetic nanopore structures are mostly based on a fixed pore that impedes performing adaptable regulation of properties to environmental change. This limitation can be overcome by integration of hydrophilic oligo(ethylene oxide) dendrons into aromatic building blocks for nanopore self-assembly, because the dendritic chains undergo large conformational changes triggered by environmental change. The transition of the oligoether chains triggers the aromatic nanopore assembly to undergo reversible pore deformation through closing, squeezing, and shape change without structural collapse. These switching properties allow the aromatic nanopore structures to perform adaptable, complex functions which are difficult to achieve using a fixed pore assembly.In this Account, we summarize our recent progress in the development of switchable nanopore structures by self-assembly of rigid aromatic amphiphiles grafted by hydrophilic oligo(ethylene oxide) dendrons in aqueous media. We show that combining oligoether chains into aromatic segments generates switchable aromatic nanopore structures in aqueous media such as hollow tubules, toroidal structures, and 2D porous sheets depending on the shape of the aromatic building block. Next, we discuss the chemical principle behind the switching motion of the aromatic nanopore structures triggered by external stimuli. We show that the internal pores of the aromatic nanostructures are able to undergo reversible switching between open-closed or expanded-contracted states triggered by external stimuli such as temperature, pH, and salts. In the case of toroidal structures, closed ring-like aromatic frameworks can be spirally open triggered by heat treatment, which spontaneously initiate helical polymerization. Additionally, we discuss switchable functions carried out by the aromatic nanopores such as driving helicity inversion of DNA, consecutive enzymatic action, reversible actuation of lipid vesicles, and pumping of captured guests out of internal pores. By understanding the underlying chemical principle required for dynamic mechanical motion, aromatic assembly can be exploited more broadly to create emergent nanopore structures with functions as complex as those of biological systems.

Morphologically Diverse Micro- and Macrostructures Created via Solvent Evaporation-Induced Assembly of Fluorescent Spherical Particles in the Presence of Polyethylene Glycol Derivatives

The creation of fluorescent micro- and macrostructures with the desired morphologies and sizes is of considerable importance due to their intrinsic functions and performance. However, it is still challenging to modulate the morphology of fluorescent organic materials and to obtain insight into the factors governing the morphological evolution. We present a facile bottom-up approach to constructing diverse micro- and macrostructures by connecting fluorescent spherical particles (SPs), which are generated via the spherical assembly of photoisomerizable azobenzene-based propeller-shaped chromophores, only with the help of commercially available polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivatives. Without any extra additives, solvent evaporation created a slow morphological evolution of the SPs from short linear chains (with a length of a few micrometers) to larger, interconnected networks and sheet structures (ranging from tens to >100 µm) at the air–liquid interface. Their morphologies and sizes were significantly dependent on the fraction and length of the PEG. Our experimental results suggest that noncovalent interactions (such as hydrophobic forces and hydrogen bonding) between the amphiphilic PEG chains and the relatively hydrophobic SPs were weak in aqueous solutions, but play a crucial role in creating the morphologically diverse micro- and macrostructures. Moreover, short-term irradiation with visible light caused fast morphological crumpling and fluorescence switching of the obtained structures.

Branched Aggregates with Tunable Morphology via Hierarchical Self-Assembly of Azobenzene-Derived Molecular Double Brushes

Hierarchical self-assembly is one of the most effective approaches to fabricate nature-inspired materials with subtle nanostructures. We report a distinct hierarchical self-assembly process of molecular double brushes (MDBs) with each graft site carrying a poly(azobenzene-acrylate) (PAzo) chain and a poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) chain. Asymmetric tapered worm (ATW) nanostructures with chain-end reactivity assembling from the azobenzene-derived MDBs serve as primary subunits to prepare branched supermicelles by increasing water content (C_w ) in THF/water. Various natural Antedon-shaped multiarm worm-like aggregates (MWAs) can be created via the particle-particle connection of ATWs. Intriguingly, the azobenzene moieties undergo trans-cis isomerization upon UV irradiation and further promote a morphology evolution of MWAs. Multiscale supermicelles comprised of starfish shapes with differing central body and arm morphologies (e.g., compare to the biological specimens Luidia ciliaris and Crossaster papposus) were prepared by manipulating irradiation time.

Self-assembling peptides as vectors for local drug delivery and tissue engineering applications

Molecular self-assembly has forged a new era in the development of advanced biomaterials for local drug delivery and tissue engineering applications. Given their innate biocompatibility and biodegradability, self-assembling peptides (SAPs) have come in the spotlight of such applications. Short and water-soluble SAP biomaterials associated with enhanced pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) responses after the topical administration of the therapeutic systems, or improved regenerative potential in tissue engineering applications will be the focus of the current review. SAPs are capable of generating supramolecular structures using a boundless array of building blocks, while peptide engineering is an approach commonly pursued to encompass the desired traits to the end composite biomaterials. These two elements combined, expand the spectrum of SAPs multi-functionality, constituting them potent biomaterials for use in various biomedical applications.

Molecular Recognition Driven Bioinspired Directional Supramolecular Assembly of Amphiphilic (Macro)molecules and Proteins

Bioinspired self-assembly has been explored with diverse synthetic scaffolds, among which amphiphiles are perhaps the most extensively studied systems. Classical surfactants or amphiphilic block copolymers, depending on the hydrophobic-hydrophilic balance, produce distinct nanostructures, which hold promise for applications ranging from biology to materials sciences. Nevertheless, their immiscibility-driven aggregation does not provide the opportunity to precisely regulate the internal order, morphology, or functional group display, which is highly desirable, especially in the context of biological applications.A new class of amphiphiles have emerged in the recent past in which the hydrophilic segment(s) is appended with a hydrophobic supramolecular-structure-directing-unit (SSDU), consisting of a π-conjugated chromophore and a H-bonding group. Self-recognition of the SSDU by attractive directional interactions governs the supramolecular assembly, which is fundamentally different than the repulsive solvent-immiscibility driven aggregation of traditional amphiphiles. Such SSDU-appended hydrophilic polymers exhibit entropy-driven highly stable self-assembly producing distinct nanostructures depending on the H-bonding functional group. For example, polymers with the hydrazide-functionalized SSDU attached form a polymersome, while in a sharp contrast, the same polymers when connected to an amide containing SSDU produce a cylindrical micelle via a spherical-micelle intermediate. This relationship holds true for a series of SSDU-attached hydrophilic polymers irrespective of the hydrophobic/hydrophilic balance or chemical structure, indicating that the supramolecular-assembly is primarily controlled by the specific molecular-recognition motif of the SSDU, instead of the packing parameter-based norms. Beyond synthetic polymers, SSDU-attached proteins also exhibit similar molecular-recognition driven self-assembly as well as coassembly with SSDU-attached polymers or hydrophilic wedges, producing multi-stimuli-responsive nanostructures in which the protein gains remarkable protection from thermal denaturation or enzymatic hydrolysis and exhibits redox-responsive enzymatic activity.Furthermore, SSDU-derived bola-shape π-amphiphiles have been recognized as a useful scaffold for the synthesis of unsymmetric polymersomes, rarely reported in the literature. The building block consists of a hydrophobic naphthalene-diimide (NDI) π-system attached to a hydrophilic functional group (ionic or nonionic) and a nonionic wedge on its two opposite arms. Extended H-bonding among the hydrazide groups, placed only on one side of the central chromophore by design, ensures stacking of the NDIs with parallel orientation and induces a preferred direction of curvature so that the H-bonded chain and consequently the functional groups attached to the same side remain at the inner-wall of the supramolecular polymersome. Automatically, the functional groups, located on the other side, are displayed at the outer surface. This design works for different amphiphiles, which by virtue of efficient and predictable functional group display, strongly influences the multivalent binding with different biological targets resulting in efficient enzyme inhibition, glycocluster effect, or antibacterial activity, depending on the nature of the functional group. By taking advantage of the electron accepting nature of the NDI, electron rich pyrene-containing amphiphiles can be costacked in alternating sequence, producing temperature and redox-responsive supramolecular polymers with NDI/pyrene stoichiometry-dependent morphology, lower critical solution temperature (LCST), functional group display, and antibacterial activity.

Self-Assembly of Photoresponsive Molecular Amphiphiles in Aqueous Media

Amphiphilic molecules, comprising hydrophobic and hydrophilic moieties and the intrinsic propensity to self-assemble in aqueous environment, sustain a fascinating spectrum of structures and functions ranging from biological membranes to ordinary soap. Facing the challenge to design responsive, adaptive, and out-of-equilibrium systems in water, the incorporation of photoresponsive motifs in amphiphilic molecular structures offers ample opportunity to design supramolecular systems that enables functional responses in water in a non-invasive way using light. Here, we discuss the design of photoresponsive molecular amphiphiles, their self-assembled structures in aqueous media and at air-water interfaces, and various approaches to arrive at adaptive and dynamic functions in isotropic and anisotropic systems, including motion at the air-water interface, foam formation, reversible nanoscale assembly, and artificial muscle function. Controlling the delicate interplay of structural design, self-assembling conditions and external stimuli, these responsive amphiphiles open several avenues towards application such as soft adaptive materials, controlled delivery or soft actuators, bridging a gap between artificial and natural dynamic systems.

Deciphering the evolution of supramolecular nanofibers in solution and solid-state: a combined microscopic and spectroscopic approach

Supramolecular self-assembly of small organic molecules has emerged as a powerful tool to construct well-defined micro- and nanoarchitecture through fine-tuning a range of intermolecular interactions. The size, shape, and optical properties of these nanostructures largely depend on the specific assembly of the molecular building units, temperature and polarity of the medium, and external stimuli. The engineering of supramolecular self-assembled nanostructures with morphology-dependent tunable emission is in high demand due to the promising scope in nanodevices and molecular machines. However, probing the evolution of molecular aggregates from the solution and directing the self-assembly process in a pre-defined fashion are challenging. In the present study, we have deciphered the sequential evolution of supramolecular nanofibers from solution to spherical and oblong-shaped nanoparticles through the variation of solvent polarity, tuning the hydrophobic-hydrophilic interactions. An intriguing case of molecular self-assembly has been elucidated employing a newly designed π-conjugated thiophene derivative (TPAn) through a combination of steady-state absorption, emission measurements, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS), and electron microscopy. The FCS analysis and microscopy results revealed that the small-sized nanofibers in the dispersion further agglomerated upon solvent evaporation, resulting in a network of nanofibers. Stimuli-responsive reversible interconversion between a network of nanofibers and spherical nanoaggregates was probed both in dispersion and solvent-evaporated state. The evolution of organic nanofibers and a subtle control over the self-assembly process demonstrated in the current investigation provide a general paradigm to correlate the size, shape, and emission properties of fluorescent molecular aggregates in complex heterogeneous media, including a human cell.

Newer Non-ionic A2 B2 -Type Enzyme-Responsive Amphiphiles for Drug Delivery

A new series of nonionic gemini amphiphiles have been synthesized in a multi-step chemoenzymatic approach by using a novel A₂ B₂ -type central core consisting of conjugating glycerol and propargyl bromide on 5-hydroxy isophthalic acid. A pair of hydrophilic monomethoxy poly(ethylene glycol) (mPEG) and hydrophobic linear alkyl chains (C₁₂ /C₁₅ ) were then added to the core to obtain amphiphilic architectures. The aggregation tendency in aqueous media was studied by dynamic light scattering, fluorescence spectroscopy and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy. The nanotransport potential of the amphiphiles was studied for model hydrophobic guests, that is, the dye Nile Red and the drug Nimodipine by using UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy. Evaluation of the viability of amphiphile-treated A549 cells showed them to be well tolerated up to the concentrations studied. Being ester based, these amphiphiles exhibit stimuli-responsive sensitivity towards esterases, and a rupture of amphiphilic architecture was observed in the presence of immobilized Candida antarctica lipase (Novozym 435), thus facilitating release of the encapsulated guest from the aggregate.

Tuning of Morphology by Chirality in Self-Assembled Structures of Bis(Urea) Amphiphiles in Water

We present the synthesis and self‐assembly of a chiral bis(urea) amphiphile and show that chirality offers a remarkable level of control towards different morphologies. Upon self‐assembly in water, the molecular‐scale chiral information is translated to the mesoscopic level. Both enantiomers of the amphiphile self‐assemble into chiral twisted ribbons with opposite handedness, as supported by Cryo‐TEM and circular dichroism (CD) measurements. The system presents thermo‐responsive aggregation behavior and combined transmittance measurements, temperature‐dependent UV, CD, TEM, and micro‐differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) show that a ribbon‐to‐vesicles transition occurs upon heating. Remarkably, chirality allows easy control of morphology as the self‐assembly into distinct aggregates can be tuned by varying the enantiomeric excess of the amphiphile, giving access to flat sheets, helical ribbons, and twisted ribbons.

Dynamic behavior of macrocycle-based organic frameworks in single-crystal to single-crystal guest exchanges

An adamantane-based macrocycle afforded three inclusion crystals with diverse 1D channels. Single-crystal to single-crystal guest exchanges occurred for two crystals, where their frameworks displayed distinctive structural transformations.

Fast Response Organic Supramolecular Transistors Utilizing In-Situ π-Ion Gels

Despite their remarkable charge carrier mobility when forming well-ordered fibers, supramolecular transistors often suffer from poor processability that hinders device integration, resulting in disappointing transconductance and output currents. Here, a new class of supramolecular transistors, π-ion gel transistors (PIGTs), is presented. An in situ π-ion gel, which is an unprecedented composite of semiconducting nanofibers and an enclosed ionic liquid, is directly employed as an active material and internal capacitor. In comparison to other supramolecular transistors, a PIGT displays a high transconductance (133 µS) and output current (139 µA at -6 V), while retaining a high charge-carrier mobility (4.2 × 10^-2 cm² V^-1 s^-1 ) and on/off ratio (3.7 × 10⁴ ). Importantly, the unique device configuration and the high ionic conductivity associated with the distinct nanosegregation enables the fastest response among accumulation-mode electrochemical-based transistors (<20 µs). Considering the advantages of the absence of dielectric layers and the facile fabrication process, PIGT has great potential to be utilized in printed flexible devices. The device platform is widely applicable to various supramolecular assemblies, shedding light on the interdisciplinary research of supramolecular chemistry and organic electronics.

DNA-π Amphiphiles: A Unique Building Block for the Crafting of DNA-Decorated Unilamellar Nanostructures

The unparalleled ability of DNA to recognize its complementary strand through Watson and Crick base pairing is one of the most reliable molecular recognition events found in natural systems. This highly specific sequence information encoded in DNA enables it to be a versatile building block for bottom-up self-assembly. Hence, the decoration of functional nanostructures with information-rich DNA is extremely important as this allows the integration of other functional molecules onto the surface of the nanostructures through DNA hybridization in a highly predictable manner. DNA amphiphiles are a class of molecular hybrids where a short hydrophilic DNA is conjugated to a hydrophobic moiety. Since DNA amphiphiles comprise DNA as the hydrophilic segment, their self-assembly in aqueous medium always results in the formation of nanostructures with shell made of DNA. This clearly suggests that self-assembly of DNA amphiphiles is a straightforward strategy for the ultradense decoration of a nanostructure with DNA. However, initial attempts toward the design of DNA amphiphiles were primarily focused on long flexible hydrocarbon chains as the hydrophobic moiety, and it has been demonstrated in several examples that they typically self-assemble into DNA-decorated micelles (spherical or cylindrical). Hence, molecular level control over the self-assembly of DNA amphiphiles and achieving diverse morphologies was extremely challenging and unrealized until recently.In this Account, we summarize our recent efforts in the area of self-assembly of DNA amphiphiles and narrate the remarkable effect of the incorporation of a large π-surface as the hydrophobic domain in the self-assembly of DNA amphiphiles. Self-assembly of DNA amphiphiles with flexible hydrocarbon chains as the hydrophobic moiety is primarily driven by the hydrophobic effect. The morphology of such nanostructures is typically predicted based on the volume ratio of hydrophobic to hydrophilic segments. However, control over the self-assembly and prediction of the morphology become increasingly challenging when the hydrophobic moieties can interact with each other through other noncovalent interactions. In this Account, the unique self-assembly behaviors of DNA-π amphiphiles, where a large π-surface acts as the hydrophobe, are described. Due to the extremely strong π-π stacking in aqueous medium, the assembly of the amphiphile is found to preferably proceed in a lamellar fashion (bilayer) and hence the morphology of the nanostructures can easily be tuned by the structural modification of the π-surface. Design principles for crafting various DNA-decorated lamellar nanostructures including unilamellar vesicles, two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets, and helically twisted nanoribbons by selecting suitable π-surfaces are discussed. Unilamellar vesicular nanostructures were achieved by using linear oligo(phenylene ethynylene) (OPE) as the hydrophobic segment, where lamellar assembly undergoes folding to form unilamellar vesicles. The replacement of OPE with a strongly π-stacking hydrophobe such as hexabenzocoronene (HBC) or tetraphenylethylene (TPE) provides extremely strong π-stacking compared to OPE, which efficiently directed the 2D growth for the lamellar assembly and led to the formation of 2D nanosheets. A helical twist in the lamella was achieved by the replacement of HBC with hexaphenylbenzene (HPB), which is the twisted analogue of HBC, directing the assembly into helically twisted nanoribbons. The most beneficial structural feature of this kind of nanostructure is the extremely dense decoration of their surface with ssDNA, which can further be used for DNA-directed organization of other functional nanomaterials. By exploring this, their potential as a nanoscaffold for predefined assembly of plasmonic nanomaterials into various plasmonic 1D, 2D, and 3D nanostructures through DNA hybridization is discussed. Moreover, the design of pH-responsive DNA-based vesicles and their application as a nanocarrier for payload delivery is also demonstrated.

Speedy one-pot electrochemical synthesis of giant octahedrons from in situ generated pyrrolidinyl PAMAM dendrimer

A novel electrochemical synthesis via a radical generation pathway is described here for the generation of a quaternary megamer structure from secondary dendrimers. The reaction is rapid and completes in <5 min. We have used lower/higher generation poly(amido)amine (PAMAM) dendrimers with carboxylic acid groups at the terminals. A precise electrocatalytic reaction at >3.5 V activates the carboxylic groups to undergo anodic oxidation (-e-) and produce radical carboxylate anions on the dendrimer surface. The reaction further goes through a decarboxylative elimination. Successive self-assembly creates billions of polydispersed and extremely stable ∼500 nm octahedron nanostructures, which we failed to destroy even by using a 20 kV electron beam. This is a new route for the speedy synthesis of important futuristic materials of well-defined shape. It has applications in building designer organic crystals for solar cells, organic electronics, rapid protein gelation, rapid protein crystallization, etc.

Supramolecular Tubule from Seesaw Shaped Amphiphile and Its Hierarchical Evolution into Sheet

Although supramolecular one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) structures with various unique properties have been extensively studied, the reversible switching between tubules and sheets via lateral association remains challenging. Here, we report the unique structures of a supramolecular tubular bamboo culm in which the hollow-tubular interior is separated, at intervals, by nodes per 1.3 nm. Interestingly, the discrete tubules are able to hierarchically assemble into a flat sheet in response to an aromatic guest. The addition of trans-azobenzene, as a guest, enables the tubules to form a hierarchical sheet assembly via the lateral interaction. The hierarchical sheet structures are disassembled into their constituent tubules upon UV irradiation due to trans-cis isomerization. The recovery from cis-azobenzene to trans-form induces repeatedly the hierarchical sheet assembly, indicative of a reversible switching behavior between tubules and sheets triggered by an external stimulus.
