Abstract
The development of suitable electron donors is critical to single-electron-transfer (SET) processes. The use of heteroatom-centered anions as super-electron-donors (SEDs) for direct SET reactions has rarely been studied. Here we show that heteroatom anions can be applied as SEDs to initiate radical reactions for facile synthesis of 3-substituted benzofurans. Phosphines, thiols and anilines bearing different substitution patterns work well in this inter-molecular radical coupling reaction and the 3-functionalized benzofuran products bearing heteroatomic functionalities are given in moderate to excellent yields. The reaction mechanism is elucidated via control experiments and computational methods. The afforded products show promising applications in both organic synthesis and pesticide development.

Abstract
2-(Methylthio)-1,3-dithioles are important heterocyclic compounds used for the preparation of redox-active derivatives of tetrathiafulvalene as they serve as precursors for phosphonate esters that can be employed in Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons olefination reactions. Here, we present a mild and less hazardous method than previous methods for converting readily accessible 1,3-dithiole-2-thiones into 2-(methylthio)-1,3-dithioles by methylation with trimethyl orthoformate and HBF4·Et2O and a subsequent reduction with NaBH4.

Recent Advances in Design and Synthesis of Diselenafulvenes, Tetraselenafulvalenes, and Their Tellurium Analogs and Application for Materials Sciences. Molecules 2022; 27:molecules27175613. Abstract
The first organic metals were obtained based on tetrathiafulvalene. The most significant advance in the field of organic metals was the discovery of superconductivity. The first organic superconductors were obtained based on tetramethyltetraselenafulvalene. These facts demonstrate great importance of tetraselenafulvalenes and their precursors, diselenafulvenes, for materials sciences. Derivatives of 1,4-diselenafulvene and 1,4,5,8-tetraselenafulvalene are useful building blocks for organic synthesis and donor units for the preparation of charge-transfer complexes and radical ion salts, the construction of organic metals, superconductors, organic Dirac materials, semiconductors, ferromagnets, and other conductive materials. This review covers the literature on the design, synthesis, and application of 1,4,5,8-tetraselenafulvalenes and 1,4-diselenafulvenes and their tellurium analogs over the past 15–20 years. These two classes of compounds are interconnected, since the main part of methods for the synthesis of tetraselenafulvalenes is based on the diselenafulvene derivatives as starting compounds. Special attention is paid to the development of novel efficient synthetic approaches to these classes of compounds. Conducting properties and distinguishing features of materials based on tetraselenafulvalenes and their tellurium analogs as well as examples of materials with high conductivity are discussed.

Abstract
Synthesis of the tricyclic 1,3-dithiole-2-thione-derived 1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinine is presented using a base-induced ring formation protocol and chloro(diethylamino)(1,3-dithiole-2-thion-4-yl)phosphane as the starting point. P-oxidation reactions of dihydrodiphosphinine by chalcogens led to bis(P-oxide), bis(P-sulfide), or bis(P-selenide), respectively; all tricyclic compounds were obtained as cis/trans mixtures. 1,4-Dihydro-1,4-diphosphinine was converted into 1,4-dichloro-1,4-dihydro-1,4-diphosphinine. This compound is almost insoluble in organic solvents, furnished selectively the trans-bis(amino) derivative upon a 2-fold P-substitution reaction with the weak nucleophile potassium bis(trimethylsilyl)amide, and reacted also with alcohols ROH (R = nBu, iPr, tBu) to give cis/trans mixtures of the corresponding bis(alkoxy) derivatives. Furthermore, the dichloro derivative could be reduced to a 1,4-diphosphinine using PnBu3, but, unfortunately, the stubbornly insoluble product could be neither purified nor crystallized. Despite this, we achieved a thermal [4 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of this first CPS-ternary compound with diethylacetylene dicarboxylate to obtain the corresponding diphosphabarrelene, thus providing indirect evidence for the aromatic tricyclic diphosphinine. Detailed density functional theory studies on the formation of 1,4-diphosphinine provided insights into formation pathways as well as NMR, IR, and UV/vis data.

Abstract
1,3-Dithiol-2-ide is a fully unsaturated five-membered heterocycle with a carbanion unit between two of the ring sulfur atoms. Derivatives thereof are important intermediates in synthetic protocols for preparing various 1,4-dithiafulvene (DTF) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) compounds by Wittig, Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons, or phosphite-mediated olefination reactions. When considering the electronic properties of DTF, one would usually consider this unit as an electron-donating group as it can form a 6π-aromatic 1,3-dithiolium ring by resonance. Yet, in this review, I will move forward a dual character of the DTF by which it can also act as an electron-withdrawing group, involving formation of the 1,3-dithiol-2-ide. In particular, this electronic effect can be used to explain its ability to promote the electrocyclic ring closure of a vinylheptafulvene into a dihydroazulene. This view on the properties of DTF is very much in line with the dual reactivity of ketene dithioacetals that react with both nucleophiles and electrophiles. Moreover, the 1,3-dithiol-2-ide unit was recently generated in the reduction of an extended and quinoid-like TTF where the core became an aromatic carbo-benzene moiety. This aspect is particularly interesting for future design of extended TTFs that can act as both electron donors and acceptors.

Abstract
The promotion of mixed-valence interactions between redox-active, π-conjugated scaffolds is of interest when developing new conducting or electrochromic materials as well as in the construction of redox-controlled supramolecular assemblies. In this work, dimeric structures of the redox-active indenofluorene-extended tetrathiafulvalene (IF-TTF) unit were synthesized in a stepwise protocol. The synthesis relied on the development of a new unsymmetrical IF-TTF building block by a combination of phosphite-mediated and Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons reactions for introduction of the dithiafulvene units. The redox properties were studied by cyclic voltammetry, where it was observed that a first one-electron oxidation, corresponding to a mixed-valence state, occurs at a significantly lower potential when the IF-TTF unit is incorporated into a dimer, compared to a monomer analogue. This result indicates that locking the redox-active IF-TTF units in close proximity promotes intramolecular mixed-valence interactions. A computational study was also conducted, supporting the involvement of intramolecular interactions.

Abstract
Two new dithiolene ligand precursors, containing fused TTF and alkyl thiophenic moieties 3,3'-{[2-(5-(tert-butyl)thieno[2,3-d][1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-dithiole-4,5-diyl]bis[sulfanediyl]}dipropanenitrile (α-tbtdt, 1), and 3,3'-{[2-(5-methylthieno[2,3-d][1,3]dithiol-2-ylidene)-1,3-dithiole-4,5-diyl]bis[sulfanediyl]}dipropanenitrile (α-mtdt, 2), were synthesized and characterized. The electrochemical properties of these electronic donors were studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) in dichloromethane. Both compounds show two quasi-reversible oxidation processes, versus Ag/AgCl, typical of TTF donors at E11/2 = 279 V and E21/2 = 680 V for 1 and E11/2 = 304 V and E21/2 = 716 V in the case of 2. The single-crystal X-ray structure of 1 and of a charge transfer salt of 2, (α-mtdt)[Au(mnt)2] (3), are reported.

Abstract
A dissymmetric TTF-type electron donor, cyanobenzene-ethylenedithio-tetrathiafulvalene (CNB-EDT-TTF), was obtained in high yield, by a cross-coupling reaction with triethyl phosphite between 2-thioxobenzo[d][1,3]dithiole-5-carbonitrile and 5,6-dihydro-[1,3]dithiolo[4,5-b][1,4]dithiin-2-one. This new donor was characterized namely by single crystal X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, NMR, UV-visible and IR spectroscopy.

Abstract
An Ullmann-type coupling reaction was employed for the preparation of several N-arylated monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes with variable substitution patterns. Spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of the coupling products strongly depend on the electronic nature of the aromatic substituents due to their direct conjugation with the tetrathiafulvalene chromophore. The crystal packing of the arylated monopyrrolotetrathiafulvalenes is primarily defined by networks of C-H···X weak hydrogen bonds and short S···S contacts involving the tetrathiafulvalene moieties.

Glycoluril-tetrathiafulvalene molecular clips: on the influence of electronic and spatial properties for binding neutral accepting guests. Beilstein J Org Chem 2015; 11:1023-36. Abstract
Glycoluril-based molecular clips incorporating tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) sidewalls have been synthesized through different strategies with the aim of investigating the effect of electrochemical and spatial properties for binding neutral accepting guests. We have in particular focused our study on the spacer extension in order to tune the intramolecular TTF···TTF distance within the clip and, consequently, the redox behavior of the receptor. Carried out at different concentrations in solution, electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical experiments provide evidence of mixed-valence and/or π-dimer intermolecular interactions between TTF units from two closed clips. The stepwise oxidation of each molecular clip involves an electrochemical mechanism with three one-electron processes and two charge-coupled chemical reactions, a scheme which is supported by electrochemical simulations. The fine-tunable π-donating ability of the TTF units and the cavity size allow to control binding interaction towards a strong electron acceptor such as tetrafluorotetracyanoquinodimethane (F4-TCNQ) or a weaker electron acceptor such as 1,3-dinitrobenzene (m-DNB).

Abstract
Tetrathiafulvalene derivatives (TTF1-TTF9) bearing fluorinated phenyl groups attached through the sulfur bridges have been synthesized by employing a copper-mediated C-S coupling reaction of C6 H5-x Fx I (x=1, 2, 5) and a zinc-thiolate complex, (TBA)2 [Zn(DMIT)2 ] (TBA=tetrabutyl ammonium, DMIT=1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate), as the key step. Particularly, the selective synthesis of C6 F5 -substituted (TTF8) and C6 F4 -fused (TTF9) TTFs from C6 F5 I is disclosed. The physicochemical properties and crystal structures of these TTFs are fully investigated by UV/Vis absorption spectra, cyclic voltammetry, molecular orbital calculation, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The exchange of hydrogen versus fluorine on the peripheral phenyl groups show a notable influence on both the electronic and crystallographic natures of the resulting TTFs: 1) lowering both the HOMO and the LUMO energy levels, 2) modulating the electrochemical properties by regioselective and/or the degree of fluorination, 3) enhancing the driving forces of stacking by multiple fluorine interactions (F⋅⋅⋅S, CF⋅⋅⋅π/πF , CF⋅⋅⋅FC, and CF⋅⋅⋅H). This work indicates that the decoration with fluorinated phenyls holds promise to produce functional TTFs with novel electronic and aggregation features.

Abstract
The scandium triflate-catalyzed cycloaddition reaction of polycyclic 1,2-dithiolethiones to maleimides is described. The reaction constitutes an easy approach to linear as well as branched oligomeric cis-fused dihydro[1,3]dithiolo[4,5-c]pyrrole-4,6-dione rings interconnected by 3,5-diylidenethiomorpholine-2,6-dithione or ylidene-6-thioxo[1,2]dithiolo[3,4-b][1,4]thiazin-3-one groups. The presence of highly colored, highly polarized push-pull α,β-unsaturated thione groups in their structures make these compounds sensitive to the presence of mercury(II) cation in organic or mixed organic/aqueous solvents.

Abstract
We prepared a novel class of ferrocene-dithiolene hybrid molecules, FcS4dt(Me)2 and FcS4dt[Pt((t)Bu2bpy)] (where FcS4dt indicates 2-(1,3-dithia[3]ferrocenophane-2-ylidene)-1,3-dithiole-4,5-dithiolate and (t)Bu2bpy indicates 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine), in which the ferrocene moiety was bound to the planar conjugated dithiolene skeleton via two sulfur atoms such that the cyclopentadienyl rings were perpendicular to the dithiolene backbone. The physical properties and electronic structures of the complexes and their oxidized species [FcS4dt(Me)2](•+) and [FcS4dt[Pt((t)Bu2bpy)]](•+) were investigated by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, cyclic voltammetry, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), and UV-vis near infrared (UV-vis-NIR) spectroscopy. The electron density distributions of the highest occupied molecular orbitals (HOMOs) of FcS4dt(Me)2 and FcS4dt[Pt((t)Bu2bpy)] differed remarkably in that the HOMO of the former was ferrocene-based whereas that of the latter was dithiolene-based. The differences in the HOMO distributions originated from the energy level of the dithiolene-based π-orbital in each of the complexes, which was controlled by changing R in FcS4dt(R)2 (R = Me for FcS4dt(Me)2; 2R = Pt((t)Bu2bpy) for FcS4dt[Pt((t)Bu2bpy)]). We succeeded in analyzing the crystal structure of [FcS4dt[Pt((t)Bu2bpy)]](F4TCNQ)·C6H14·CH2Cl2 (where F4TCNQ indicates 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane), which provided a rare example of the crystal structure of a [Pt(diimine)(dithiolate)](•+) ion-based complex. A comparison of the bond lengths in FcS4dt[Pt((t)Bu2bpy)] and [FcS4dt[Pt((t)Bu2bpy)]](•+) suggested that the latter complex displayed a conjugated dithiolene-based π-radical character. These considerations agreed well with the electronic structures calculated using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent(TD)-DFT methods. Significant electronic communication between the ferrocene and dithiolene moieties was detected for both [FcS4dt(Me)2](•+) and [FcS4dt[Pt((t)Bu2bpy)]](•+) in the appearance of an intramolecular charge transfer band, which was hardly observed for previously reported ferrocene-dithiolene hybrid molecules. The charge transfer direction was reversed between the two cations. The electron coupling parameter HAB and the potential energy curves of the oxidized complexes were estimated based on the classical two-state Marcus-Hush theory. These results suggest that FcS4dt-based metalladithiolenes can exhibit controllable electronic structures expressed as double-minimum potential energy curves.

Abstract
In the title compound, C8H5NOS2, the non-H atoms are approximately coplanar [maxium deviation = 0.060 (3) Å]. The dihedral angle between the least-squares planes of the pyridine and 1,3-dithiol-2-one rings is 5.96 (17)°. The crystal packing is stabilized by weak intermolecular C—H⋯O hydrogen bonds and by an S⋯S close contact [3.510 (5) Å].
