Predicting the propene stereoselectivity on transition metal catalysts: A daunting task for density functional theory. J Comput Chem 2024; 45:1483-1492. Abstract
Thanks to recent developments in hardware and software, quantum chemical methods are increasingly used for interpreting the complex mechanisms underlying polymerization reaction by homogeneous catalysis. Unfortunately, the dimensions of even the smallest realistic models are too large to permit the use of state-of-the-art composite wave function methods. Under these circumstances, density functional theory still offers the best compromise between cost and accuracy. However, comprehensive benchmarks of different functionals are not yet available for this important research field. The main aim of the present paper is to fill this gap by performing an unbiased comparison of several density functionals and continuum solvent models for the stereo-control in the propylene polymerization on prototypical catalysts inducing different reaction mechanisms. While it was not possible to define a unique computational protocol providing the best results in all the situations, the B3PW91 functional in conjunction with D3 empirical dispersions and the solvent model density solvent model performs remarkably well for three out of the four investigated catalysts. Under such circumstances, it is recommended to compare the results delivered by different models when approaching additional classes of catalysts.

Triptycene as a scaffold in metallocene catalyzed olefin polymerization. Dalton Trans 2024. Abstract
A set of metallocene olefin polymerization catalysts bearing triptycene moieties in either position 4-5 (complexes Ty1-Ty5) or in position 5-6 (complexes Ty6-Ty8) of the basic dimethylsilyl-bridged bis(indenyl) system has been tested in propene polymerization and in ethene/1-hexene copolymerization. Comparison of the results with QSPR (quantitative structure-property relationship) predictions not parametrized for these exotic ligand variations demonstrates that trends can still be identified by extrapolation. Interestingly, Ty7, upon suitable activation, provides a highly isotactic polypropylene with an exceptional amount of 2,1 regio-errors (8%). The previously developed QSPR type models successfully predicted the low regioselectivity of this catalyst, despite the fact that the catalyst structure differs significantly from the benchmark set.

Abstract
The stereoelectronic factors responsible for stereoselectivity in propene polymerization with several metallocene and post-metallocene transition metal catalysts have been revisited using a combined approach of DFT calculations, the Activation Strain Model, Natural Energy Decomposition Analysis and a molecular descriptor (%VBur). There are in most cases two different paths leading to the formation of stereoerrors (SE), and the classical model does not suffice to fully understand stereoregulation. Improving stereoselectivity requires raising the energies of both SE insertion transition states. Our analyses show that the degrees of deformation of the active site (catalyst+chain) and the prochiral monomer differ for these two paths, and between different catalyst classes. Based on such analyses we discuss: a) the subtle differences in SE formation between stereoselective catalysts with different ligand frameworks; b) the reason for exceptional stereoselectivity reported for a special ansa-metallocene catalyst; c) the (double) stereocontrol origin for isoselective catalysts; d) the electronic contribution for isoselective catalysts generating SE by a modification of the ligand wrapping mode during the polymerization. Although this study will not immediately suggest new catalyst structures, we believe that understanding stereoregulation in great detail will increase our chances of success.

Abstract
Autonomous reaction network exploration algorithms offer a systematic approach to explore mechanisms of complex chemical processes. However, the resulting reaction networks are so vast that an exploration of all potentially accessible intermediates is computationally too demanding. This renders brute-force explorations unfeasible, while explorations with completely pre-defined intermediates or hard-wired chemical constraints, such as element-specific coordination numbers, are not flexible enough for complex chemical systems. Here, we introduce a STEERING WHEEL to guide an otherwise unbiased automated exploration. The STEERING WHEEL algorithm is intuitive, generally applicable, and enables one to focus on specific regions of an emerging network. It also allows for guiding automated data generation in the context of mechanism exploration, catalyst design, and other chemical optimization challenges. The algorithm is demonstrated for reaction mechanism elucidation of transition metal catalysts. We highlight how to explore catalytic cycles in a systematic and reproducible way. The exploration objectives are fully adjustable, allowing one to harness the STEERING WHEEL for both structure-specific (accurate) calculations as well as for broad high-throughput screening of possible reaction intermediates.

Abstract
Ansa-metallocenes, a vital class of organometallic compounds, have attracted significant attention due to their diverse structural motifs and their pivotal roles in catalysis and materials science. We investigated 37 distinct group 2 ansa-metallocenes at the B3LYP-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory. Utilizing local mode force constants derived from our local vibrational mode theory, including a special force constant directly targeting the metal-ring interaction, we could unveil latent structural differences between solvated and non-solvated metallocenophanes and the influence of the solvent on complex stability and structure. We could quantify the intrinsic strength of the metal-cyclopentadienyl (M-Cp) bonds and the influence of the bridging motifs on the stiffness of the Cp-M-Cp angles, another determinant of complex stability. LMA was complemented by the analysis of electronic density, utilizing the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), which confirmed both the impact of solvent coordination on the strength of the M-Cp bond(s) and the influence of the bridging motif on the Cp-M-Cp angles. The specific effect of the ansa-motif on the M-Cp interaction was further elucidated by a comparison with linear/bent metallocene structures. In summary, our results identify the local mode analysis as an efficient tool for unraveling the intricate molecular properties of ansa-metallocenes and their unique structural features.

Mechanism of cationic ring-opening polymerisation of ε-caprolactone using metallocene/borate catalytic systems: a DFT and NCI study on chain initiation, propagation and termination. RSC Adv 2024; 14:11715-11727. Abstract
We present a comprehensive DFT investigation on the cationic ring-opening polymerisation (CROP) of ε-caprolactone (CL) using zirconocene/borate catalyst systems. All possible pathways of the interaction between cationic species [Cp2ZrMe+] and counteranions, [A-] = [MeB(C6F5)3]- and [B(C6F5)4]-, were examined during chain initiation, propagation, and termination steps. The calculations reveal an active chain-end mechanism with O-alkyl bond cleavage of the polymerisation. The catalytic performance of the two counteranions is found to be identical, and they influence the initial process through stabilisation of the cationic species via non-covalent interactions (NCI), with the [MeB(C6F5)3]- anion stabilising the catalyst-monomer complex more effectively than the [B(C6F5)4]- anion by 24.3 kJ mol-1. The first two propagations are likely the rate-determining step, with calculated free-energy barriers of 61.4-71.2 and 73.9-80.6 kJ mol-1 with and without the anions (A-), respectively. The presence of the counteranion significantly affects the third propagation rate, lowering the barriers up to 20 kJ mol-1. Comparison of the first termination and the third propagation shows that they are not competitive, with the termination being less facile. We also studied the initiation and propagation steps for the hafnocene catalyst and found that the Hf catalyst slightly favours the CL CROP in comparison to the Zr catalyst. Analysis of solvent and dispersion interaction demonstrates that both factors play an important role in the process. NCI analysis reveals weak (van der Waals) interactions at the contacts between the cationic species and the counteranions during the reaction course. Overall, our results offer insights into the structures and interactions involved in the polymerisation.

Abstract
Herein, a concise, effective, and scalable strategy is reported that the introduction of polar molecules (PMs) (e.g., anisole (PhOMe), phenetole (PhOEt), 2-methoxynaphthalene (NaphOMe), thioanisole (PhSMe), and N,N-dimethylaniline (PhNMe2)) as continuously coordinated neutral ligand of cationic active species in situ generated from the constrain-geometry-configuration-type rare-earth metal complexes A-F/AliBu3/[Ph3C][B(C6F5)4] ternary systems can easily switch the regio- and stereoselectivity of the polymerization of conjugated dienes (CDs, including 2-subsituted CDs such as isoprene (IP) and myrcene (MY), 1,2-disubstituted CD ocimene (OC), and 1-substituted polar CD 1-(para-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-butadiene (p-MOPB)) from poor selectivities to high selectivities (for IP and MY: 3,4-selectivity up to 99%; for OC: trans-1,2-selectivity up to 93% (mm up to 90%); for p-MOPB: 3,4-syndioselectivity (3,4- up to 99%, rrrr up to 96%)). DFT calculations explain the continuous coordination roles of PMs on the regulation of the regio- and stereoselectivity of the polymerization of CDs. In comparison with the traditional strategies, this strategy by adding some common PMs is easier and more convenient, decreasing the synthetic cost and complex operation of new metal catalyst and cocatalyst. Such regio- and stereoselective regulation method by using PMs is not reported for the coordination polymerization of olefins catalyzed by rare-earth metal and early transition metal complexes.

Abstract
The efficient synthesis of polar-functionalized polypropylenes with high molecular weight and high stereoregularity represents a challenging task. This challenge becomes even more daunting when pursuing an industrially preferred heterogeneous process. This study demonstrated the realization of these goals through the use of commercial heterogeneous Ziegler-Natta catalysts in the copolymerization of propylene with ionic cluster polar monomers. The results revealed high copolymerization activity (∼1.1 × 107 g mol-1 h-1), moderate polar monomer incorporation ratios (∼4.9 mol %), high copolymer molecular weight (Mw > 105 g mol-1), high stereoregularity ([mmmm] ∼ 96%), and high melting temperature range (150-162 °C). The utilization of ionic cluster polar monomers improved the thermal stability as well as stereoselectivity of the catalyst. Moreover, the Ziegler-Natta catalyst can homopolymerize ionic cluster polar monomers with high activities (>104 g mol-1 h-1). The resulting polar-functionalized isotactic polypropylenes (iPP) exhibited superior tensile strength, impact strength, creep resistance, transparency, and crystallinity compared with nonpolar iPP. This enhancement was attributable to the dual roles of the ionic cluster polar monomer unit, serving as both a transparent nucleating agent and a dynamic cross-linking functionality. Furthermore, the polar-functionalized iPP exhibited improved compatibility with polar materials, offering benefits for applications in composites, recycling of mixed plastic wastes, 3D printing, and other fields. This study offered a comprehensive solution for the future industrial production of polar-functionalized iPP via copolymerization, bridging the gap between an efficient and practical copolymerization process from a synthetic chemistry perspective and enhanced material properties from an application perspective.

Abstract
Propylene polymerizations with different ketimide-modified half-titanocene catalysts, Cp'TiCl2(N=CtBu2) [Cp' = C5H5 (1), C5Me5 (2), Me3SiC5H4 (3)], with MAO as a cocatalyst, were investigated. The obtained polymers were studied in detail by determining their microstructure, molar masses, thermal, and mechanical properties. The Cp*-ketimide, (C5Me5)TiCl2(N=CtBu2) (2), exhibited higher catalytic activities than Cp'TiCl2(N=CtBu2) (1,3), yielding higher molar mass polymers, Mw up to 1400 Kg/mol. All the synthesized polypropylenes (PP) are atactic and highly regioregular, with predominant rrrr pentads, especially PP prepared with catalyst 1. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) established that the polymers are fully amorphous aPP, and no melting endotherm events are detected. Glass transition temperatures were detected between -2 and 2 °C. These polypropylenes have been established to be high-performance thermoplastic elastomers endowed with remarkably high ductility, and a tensile strain at break higher than 2000%.

Abstract
Polar monomer-induced β-H elimination is a key elementary step in polar polyolefin synthesis by coordination polymerization but remains underexplored. Herein, we show that a bulky neutral Ni catalyst, 1Ph, is not only a high-performance catalyst in ethylene/acrylate copolymerization (activity up to ∼37,000 kg/(mol·h) at 130 °C in a batch reactor, mol % tBA ∼ 0.3) but also a suitable platform for investigation of acrylate-induced β-H elimination. 4Ph-tBu, a novel Ni alkyl complex generated after acrylate-induced β-H elimination and subsequent acrylate insertion, was identified and characterized by crystallography. A combination of catalysis and mechanistic studies reveals effects of the acrylate monomer, bidentate ligand, and the labile ligand (e.g., pyridine) on the kinetics of β-H elimination, the role of β-H elimination in copolymerization catalysis as a chain-termination pathway, and its potential in controlling the polymer microstructure in polar polyolefin synthesis.

Abstract
Stereoselective carbon-carbon bond formation via palladium-catalyzed asymmetric allylic alkylation is a crucial strategy to access chiral natural products and active pharmaceutical ingredients. However, catalysts based on the privileged Trost and Pfaltz-Helmchen-Williams PHOX ligands often require high loadings, specific preactivation protocols, and excess chiral ligand. This makes these reactions uneconomical, often unreproducible, and thus unsustainable. Here we report several chiral single-component Pd(0) precatalysts that are active and practically-applicable in a variety of asymmetric allylic alkylation reactions. Despite the decades-long history and widespread use of Trost-type ligands, the precatalysts in this work are the only reported examples of stable, isolable Pd(0) complexes with these ligands. Evaluating these precatalysts across nine asymmetric allylic alkylation reactions reveals high reactivity and selectivity at low Pd loading. Importantly, we also report an unprecedented Pd-catalyzed enantioselective allylation of a hydantoin, achieved on gram scale in high yield and enantioselectivity with only 0.2 mol% catalyst.

Abstract
Cp2Hf(CH3)2 reacts with silica containing strong aluminum Lewis sites to form Cp2Hf-13CH3+ paired with aluminate anions. Solid-state NMR studies show that this reaction also forms neutral organohafnium and hafnium sites lacking methyl groups. Cp2Hf-13CH3+ reacts with isotatic polypropylene (iPP, Mn = 13.3 kDa; Đ = 2.4; mmmm = 94%; ∼110 C3H6/Hf) and H2 to form oils with moderate molecular weights (Mn = 290-1200 Da) in good yields. The aliphatic oils show characteristic 13C{1H} NMR properties consistent with complete loss of diastereoselectivity and formation of regioirregular errors under 1 atm H2. These results show that a Ziegler-Natta-type active site is compatible in a common reaction used to digest waste plastic into smaller aliphatic fragments.

Abstract
Precisely controlling macromolecular stereochemistry and sequences is a powerful strategy for manipulating polymer properties. Controlled synthetic routes to prepare degradable polyester, polycarbonate, and polyether are of recent interest due to the need for sustainable materials as alternatives to petrochemical-based polyolefins. Enantioselective ring-opening polymerization and ring-opening copolymerization of racemic monomers offer access to stereoregular polymers, specifically enantiopure polymers that form stereocomplexes with improved physicochemical and mechanical properties. Here, we highlight the state-of-the-art of this polymerization chemistry that can produce microstructure-defined polymers. In particular, the structures and performances of various homogeneous enantioselective catalysts are presented. Trends and future challenges of such chemistry are discussed.

Abstract
The Hf-pyridyl amido complex ((pyridylamido)Hf(IV)) is a cationic catalyst activated by ion-pairing with auxiliary catalyst B(C6F5)4 to show high activity for α-olefin polymerization. Previously, it was experimentally observed that the consumption rate of 1-octene in the 1-octene/ethene copolymerization is 3-fold compared to the 1-octene homopolymerization in coordinative chain transfer polymerization using the catalyst HfCat+-B(C6F5)4- ion pair (IP) and the chain transfer agent (CTA) ZnEt2. In the present study, we have performed atomistic chemical simulations of the IP-catalyzed homopolymerization of 1-octene and copolymerization of 1-octene and ethene on the basis of the Red Moon (RM) methodology. Using the analysis by polymer propagation diagrams (PPDs), in the 1-octene homopolymerization and the 1-octene/ethene copolymerization with the 1-octene-inserted catalyst (oHfCat), it is theoretically shown that the propagation reactions intermittently pause due to the steric hindrance of two hexyl groups of the oHfCat and the 1-octene inserted adjacent to the Hf atom. On the other hand, in the polymerizations with the ethene-inserted catalyst (eHfCat), it is reasonably recognized that the propagation reactions occur smoothly at a constant rate, and the polymerization continuously proceeds due to the relatively smaller steric hindrance. In conclusion, it was shown, for the first time, that the RM method can be used to reveal the microscopic effects of monomers and substituents in the polymerization reaction processes. Therefore, our current work using PPDs demonstrates the promising potential of the RM methodology in studying catalytic olefin polymerizations and complex chemical reaction systems in general.

Abstract
A density functional theory (DFT) study combined with the steric maps of buried volume (%VBur) as molecular descriptors and an energy decomposition analysis through the ASM (activation strain model)-NEDA (natural energy decomposition analysis) approach were applied to investigate the origins of stereoselectivity for propene polymerization promoted by pyridylamido-type nonmetallocene systems. The relationships between the fine tuning of the ligand and the propene stereoregularity were rationalized (e.g., the metallacycle size, chemical nature of the bridge, and substituents at the ortho-position on the aniline moieties). The DFT calculations and %VBur steric maps reproduced the experimental trend: substituents on the bridge and on the ortho-positions of aniline fragments enhance the stereoselectivity. The ASM-NEDA analysis enabled the separation of the steric and electronic effects and revealed how subtle ligand modification may affect the stereoselectivity of the process.

Abstract
Despite large-scale investigations of homogeneous single-site metallocene catalysts and systems based on them, there are still unsolved problems related to the control of their activity and chemo- and stereoselectivity. A solution to these problems is required to develop efficient methods for the synthesis of practically useful products of alkene transformations, such as dimers, oligomers, and polymers. Here we studied the catalytic activity of structurally diverse zirconocenes (L2ZrCl2, L = Cp, C5Me5, Ind, L2 = Me2CCp2, Me2SiCp2, Me2C2Cp2, rac-Me2CInd2, rac-H4C2Ind2, BIPh(Ind)2, H4C2[THInd]2), and co-catalysts activating the system, namely HAlBui2, MMAO-12, and (Ph3C)[B(C6F5)4], at low activator/Zr ratios in a 1-hexene oligomerization reaction. The influence of catalyst structure and system composition on the alkene conversion, the type of products, and the reaction stereoselectivity were investigated. The composition of hydride intermediates formed in the L2ZrCl2–HAlBui2–activator system (L2 = ansa-Me2CCp2, Ind) was studied by NMR spectroscopy. Participation of the bis-zirconium hydride complex as the precursor of catalytically active sites of the alkene dimerization reaction was shown.

Microenvironment Modulation of Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) for Coordination Olefin Oligomerization and (co)Polymerization. SMALL (WEINHEIM AN DER BERGSTRASSE, GERMANY) 2023; 19:e2205898. Abstract
The majority of commercial polyolefins are produced by coordination polymerization using early or late transition metal catalysts. Molecular catalysts containing these transition metals (Ti, Zr, Cr, Ni, and Fe, etc.) are loaded on supports for controlled polymerization behavior and polymer morphology in slurry or gas phase processes. Within the last few years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a class of unique porous crystalline materials constructed from metal ions/clusters and organic ligands, have been designed and utilized as excellent supports for heterogeneous polymerization catalysis whose high density and uniform distribution of active sites would benefit the modulations of molecular weight distributions of high-performance olefin oligomers and (co)polymers. Impressive efforts have been made to modulate the microenvironment surrounding the active centers at the atomic level for improved activities of MOFs-based catalysts and controlled selectivity of olefin insertion. This review aims to draw a comprehensive picture of MOFs for coordination olefin oligomerization and (co)polymerization in the past decades with respect to different transition metal active centers, various incorporation sites, and finally microenvironment modulation. In consideration of more efforts are needed to overcome challenges for further industrial and commercial application, a brief outlook is provided.

Abstract
Two types of bifunctional amido-ether ligands (syn-L and anti-L) with the rigid anthracene skeleton were designed to support dinuclear group 4 metal complexes. All organic ligands and organometallic complexes (syn-M2 and anti-M2; M = Hf, Zr, and Ti) were fully characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopies and elemental analyses. The anti-Hf2 complex showed two confirmations at room temperature with C2-symmetry or S2-symmetry that can inter-exchange, as indicated by VT NMR, while only a C2-symmetric isomer was observed for syn-Hf2 complex at room temperature. However, for Zr and Ti analogues, both syn and anti complexes exhibited only one conformation at room temperature. The molecular structures of complexes syn-Hf2, anti-Hf2, and syn-Ti2 in the solid state were further determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, revealing the distances between two metal centers in syn-M2 from 7.138 Å (syn-Ti2) to 7.321 Å (syn-Hf2) but a much farther separation in anti-M2 (8.807 Å in C2-symmetric anti-Hf2). The mononuclear complex (2-CH3O-C6H4-N-C14H9)Zr(NMe2)3 (mono-Zr1) was also prepared for control experiments. In the presence of alkyl aluminum (AlEt3) as the alkylating agent and trityl borate ([Ph3C][B(C6F5)4]) as the co-catalyst, all metal complexes were tested for copolymerization of ethylene with 1-octene at high temperature (130 °C). The preliminary polymerization results revealed that the activity was highly dependent upon the nature of metal centers, and syn-Zr2 showed the highest activity of 9600 kg(PE)·mol-1 (Zr)·h-1, which was about 17- and 2.2-fold higher than those of syn-Hf2 and syn-Ti2, respectively. Benefitting from both steric proximity and electronical interaction of two metal centers, syn-Zr2 exhibited significant cooperativity in comparison to anti-Zr2 and mono-Zr1, with regard to activity and molecular weight and 1-octene incorporation of resultant copolymers.

Abstract
C-H/Et-Al exchange in zirconium-catalyzed reactions of saturated hydrocarbons and AlEt3 affords versatile organoaluminum compounds and ethane. The grafting of commercially available Zr(OtBu)4 on silica/alumina gives monopodal ≡SiO-Zr(OtBu)3 surface pre-catalyst sites that are activated in situ by ligand exchange with AlEt3. The catalytic C-H alumination of dodecane at 150 °C followed by quenching in air affords n-dodecanol as the major product, revealing selectivity for methyl group activation. Shorter hydrocarbon or alcohol products were not detected under these conditions. Catalytic reactions of cyclooctane and AlEt3, however, afford ring-opened products, indicating that C-C bond cleavage occurs readily in methyl group-free reactants. This selectivity for methyl group alumination enables the C-H alumination of polyethylenes, polypropylene, polystyrene, and poly-α-olefin oils without significant chain deconstruction. In addition, the smallest hydrocarbon, methane, undergoes selective mono-alumination under solvent-free catalytic conditions, providing a direct route to Al-Me species.

Abstract
For more than 40 years, the synthesis of C2 -symmetric indenyl-based racemic metallocenes for the isoselective polymerization of propylene relied on a tedious separation of the produced rac and meso isomers. Status quo, latter are considered wasteful as they produce atactic polypropylene (aPP) rather than isotactic polypropylene (iPP) if activated with methylaluminoxane (MAO). Unexpectedly, the in situ activation of meso hafnocene I yielded perfectly isotactic polypropylene. We verified an isomerization of the meso compound to the corresponding racemic one upon triisobutylaluminum (TIBA) addition via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and established an easy and convenient polymerization protocol, enabling productivities comparable to pure rac-I if applied to pure meso-I or a mixture of both isomers. With this established isomerization protocol, the potential yield of iPP was enhanced by more than 400 %. This protocol was also shown to be applicable to other meso hafnocenes and some initial mechanistic insights were received.

Abstract
The acid-induced intramolecular cyclization of 1,1-disubstituted 3-aryl-2,3-dibromoallylalcohols affords 2,3-dibromo-1H-indene derivatives. This method is also applicable to the preparation of tetrabromodihydro-s-indacenes. The thus obtained multi-brominated compounds can serve as versatile synthetic building blocks to obtain a variety of indene and indacene derivatives, as demonstrated by the synthesis of dialkylmethylene-bridged oligo(phenylenevinylene)s, which feature attractive photophysical properties.

Abstract
The tridentate PNP ligand-supported rare-earth metal complexes, i.e., bis[o-diphenylphosphinophenyl]amido-Re-bis[o-dimethylaminobenzyl], [(Ph2P-o-C6H4)2N]Re[(CH2-o-Me2N(C6H4))2]: (Re = Y, 1; Nd, 2; Gd, 3) were applied to isoprene polymerization. When activated with borate activator ([PhMe2NH][B(C6F5)4] (NH-BARF), catalysts 1 and 3 exhibited excellent catalytic efficiency in aromatic media, produced very-high to ultrahigh molecular weight (Mw over 130 × 104 g/moL) polyisoprene rubber (PIR), and the obtained PIR contained over 98% cis-1,4 head-to-tail repeating unites. In most cases, the borate-activated polymerization reaction proceeded in a quasi-living pattern (PDI = 1.2–1.5) under controlled monomer conversion; whereas, activated with the commercially available modified methylaluminoxane (MMAO3A) in aliphatic hydrocarbon media, complexes 1, 2 and 3 all showed high catalytic efficiency, produced high molecular weight PIR with narrow molecular weight distribution (PDI ≤ 2.0) and high cis-1,4 head-to tail repeating unites in the range of 91–95%. Thus, the catalyst systems that consisted of 1, 2 and 3/MMAO3A, are closely relevant to the current industrial polybutadiene rubber (PBR) and PIR production processes.

Abstract
Random isotactic propene-butene copolymers (iPPC4) of different stereoregularity have been synthesized with three different homogeneous single center metallocene catalysts having different stereoselectivity. All samples crystallize from the polymerization solution in mixtures of α and γ forms, and the relative amount of γ form increases with increasing concentrations of butene and of rr stereodefects. All samples crystallize from the melt in mixtures of α and γ forms and the fraction of γ form increases with decreasing cooling rate. At high cooling rates, the crystallization of the α form is always favored, even for samples that contain high total concentration of defects that should crystallize in the γ form. The results demonstrate that in iPPs containing significant concentrations of defects, such as stereodefects and comonomeric units, the γ form is the thermodynamically stable form of iPP and crystallizes in selective conditions of very slow crystallization, whereas the α form is the kinetically favored form and crystallizes in conditions of fast crystallization.

Abstract
![]()
An unconventional
mechanism for the stereoerror formation in propene
polymerization catalyzed by C1-symmetric
salalen-M systems (M = Zr, Hf) is suggested by DFT calculations. While
propagation happens with the ligand in its fac-mer conformation, a change of ligand wrapping mode from fac-mer to fac-fac is the main source of the lower stereoselectivities
obtained with Zr and Hf. This is different for the Ti analogues, where
the ligand fac-mer wrapping mode
does not play a role. Activation strain analysis indicates that the
preference for a chain stationary mechanism of the Zr/Hf species is
due to the energy required to distort the reactants (ΔEStrain) rather than to their mutual interaction
(ΔEInt).

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of group 4 permethylpentalene (Pn* = C8Me6) hydride complexes are explored; in all cases, multimetallic hydride clusters were obtained. Group 4 lithium metal hydride clusters were obtained when reacting the metal dihalides with hydride transfer reagents such as LiAlH4, and these species featured an unusual hexagonal bipyramidal structural motif. Only the zirconium analogue was found to undergo hydride exchange in the presence of deuterium. In contrast, a trimetallic titanium hydride cluster was isolated on reaction of the titanium dialkyl with hydrogen. This diamagnetic, mixed valence species was characterized in the solid state, as well as by solution electron paramagnetic resonance and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. The structure was further probed and corroborated by density functional theory calculations, which illustrated the formation of a metal-cluster bonding orbital responsible for the diamagnetism of the complex. These permethylpentalene hydride complexes have divergent structural motifs and reactivity in comparison with related classical cyclopentadienyl analogues.

Abstract
Ethylene-propylene-diene rubbers (EPDM) are one of the most important polyolefin materials widely commercialized and used in various industries in recent years. The production of EPDM is based solely on catalytic coordination polymerization processes. The development of new catalysts and processes for the synthesis of EPDM has expanded the range of products and their manufacturing in terms of energy efficiency, processability, and environmental safety. This mini-review mainly analyzes patented data on the synthesis of EPDM on new-generation single-site catalytic systems based on Group IVB complexes including the systems commercialized by major manufacturers of EPDM. The advantages of these systems are evident in comparison with conventional vanadium systems introduced into production in the 1960s and used to date in the industrial synthesis of EPDM.

Abstract
Efficient and economical plastic waste upcycling relies on the development of catalysts capable of polymer degradation. A systematic high-throughput screening of twenty-eight polymerization catalyst precursors, belonging to the catalyst families of metallocenes, ansa-metallocenes, and hemi- and post-metallocenes, in cis-1,4-polybutadiene (PB) degradation reveals, for the first time, important structure-activity correlations. The upcycling conditions involve activation of the catalysts (at 0.18 % catalyst loading) with tri-iso-butyl aluminum at 50 °C in toluene. The data indicate the ability to degrade PB is a general reactivity profile of neutral group 4 metal hydrides. A simple quantitative-structure activity relationship (QSAR) model utilizing two descriptors for the distribution of steric bulk in the active pocket and one measuring the metal ion electrophilicity reveals the degradation ability improves with increased but not overbearing steric congestion and lower electrophilicity.

Abstract
Ansa-zirconocene complexes are widely employed as precatalysts for olefin polymerization. Their synthesis generally leads to mixtures of their rac and meso isomers, whose separation is often problematic. In this contribution, we report on the synthesis of a novel silyl-bridged bis(indenyl)-based metallocene, and on the separation of its rac and meso isomers by simple recrystallization from toluene. The two complexes, activated by methylaluminoxane (MAO), have been used as precatalysts in ethylene/1-hexene copolymerization. Regardless of the reaction conditions, the meso complex outperformed its rac congener. A similar trend was observed by performing the process in the presence of the silica-supported versions of the complexes. This is remarkable, since meso metallocenes generally display lower activities than their rac analogues. Furthermore, the meso isomer generates polymer products that are more in line with the targets for the preparation of a bimodal PE grade made of a lower-MW high-density (HDPE) fraction and a higher-MW linear low-density (LLDPE) fraction.

Abstract
Supramolecular self-assembly by hybrid macrocycles containing both cucurbit[m]uril (CB[m]) and pillar[n]arene was discussed and summarized in this review. Due to different solubility, diverse-sized cavities, and various driving forces in recognizing guests, the role of CB[m] and pillar[n]arene in such hybrid macrocyclic systems could switch between competitor in capturing specialized guests, and cooperator for building advanced hybridized macrocycles, by controlling their characteristics in host–guest inclusions. Furthermore, both CB[m] and pillar[n]arene were employed for fabricating advanced supramolecular self-assemblies such as mechanically interlocked molecules and supramolecular polymers. In those self-assemblies, CB[m] and pillar[n]arene played significant roles in, e.g., microreactor for catalyzing particular reactions to bridge different small pieces together, molecular “joint” to connect different monomers into larger assemblies, and “stabilizer” in accommodating the guest molecules to adopt a favorite structure geometry ready for assembling.
