pH effects of the arsenite photocatalytic oxidation reaction on different anatase TiO2 facets

TiO₂ is one of the most cheap materials which can both adsorb arsenic and oxidize arsenite [As(III)] to arsenate [As(V)]. In this study, anatase TiO₂ crystals with different main facets such as {101}, {001} and {100} are synthesized and used to investigate arsenic adsorption kinetics, adsorption isotherms, photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) process and the pH effects. The adsorption kinetics of arsenic on TiO₂ crystals can be described by the pseudo second-order kinetic model. For the adsorption isotherms, the Langmuir model is better than the Freundlich model for arsenic on these TiO₂ crystals. For the PCO process, the rate of As(III) oxidation can be denoted by the pseudo first-order kinetic model. It should be noted that at neutral condition the adsorption and PCO rates of the three kinds of TiO₂ crystals follow the order of {101} > {001} > {100}. The pH effect is above all important for both the arsenic adsorption and its PCO. The highest PCO speed appears at high pH values such as at pH 11 or 12.

Oxidation of arsenite to arsenate on birnessite in the presence of light

The effect of simulated solar radiation on the oxidation of arsenite [As(III)] to arsenate [As(V)] on the layered manganese oxide, birnessite, was investigated. Experiments were conducted where birnessite suspensions, under both anoxic and oxic conditions, were irradiated with simulated solar radiation in the presence of As(III) at pH 5, 7, and 9. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to determine the nature of the adsorbed product on the surface of the birnessite. The oxidation of As(III) in the presence of birnessite under simulated solar light irradiation occurred at a rate that was faster than in the absence of light at pH 5. At pH 7 and 9, As(V) production was significantly less than at pH 5 and the amount of As(V) production for a given reaction time was the same under dark and light conditions. The first order rate constant (k_obs) for As(III) oxidation in the presence of light and in the dark at pH 5 were determined to be 0.07 and 0.04 h^-1, respectively. The As(V) product was released into solution along with Mn(II), with the latter product resulting from the reduction of Mn(IV) and/or Mn(III) during the As(III) oxidation process. Post-reaction XAS analysis of As(III) exposed birnessite showed that arsenic was present on the surface as As(V). Experimental results also showed no evidence that reactive oxygen species played a role in the As(III) oxidation process.

Photocatalytic oxidation of arsenite over TiO2: is superoxide the main oxidant in normal air-saturated aqueous solutions?

TiO(2) photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) of As(III) in the normal air-saturated aqueous solutions has been widely studied. Yet no consensus has been achieved on the mechanism whether superoxide is the main oxidant, although many approaches have been taken. (Photo)electrochemical method can minimize changes to TiO(2) surface and could therefore not alter the normal mechanism. In this Article, both this approach and As(III) oxidation kinetic measurements were performed to clarify the disputed mechanism. Under a sufficient cathodic bias potential, the dark oxidation of As(III) by superoxide could occur, but both the reaction rate and the columbic efficiency were rather low, suggesting that it is a weak oxidant. However, under UV light, both the reaction rate and the columbic efficiency were greatly enhanced even at potentials negative enough to eliminate photohole participation, indicating that more efficient oxidants than superoxide were produced. Under UV illumination and enough positive potential where superoxide was absent, the As(III) oxidation was the most highly efficient. The columbic efficiency of photoholes was much higher than that of superoxide. In the normal aerated aqueous solutions and at open circuit, although the total contribution of superoxide and its derivates to the PCO of As(III) was considerably high (up to 43%), it was not more than that of photohole (57%). In addition, the reported various approaches taken to elucidate the mechanism were discussed, and the resulting disputes can be clarified by these findings. It was demonstrated that (photo)electrochemical method could provide direct and undisputed evidence to reveal the truth mechanics issues.
