Kinetic modeling of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran formation based on carbon degradation reactions

Formation pathways, gas-solid partitioning, and reaction kinetics of PCDD/Fs associated with baghouse filters operated at high temperatures: A case study

The application of the 3T method during combustion (i.e., a Temperature > 850 °C, a residence Time > 2 s, and sufficient Turbulence) can lead to elevated operating temperature in the baghouse filter for the municipal solid waste incineration (MSWI) systems without sufficient heat exchange capacity, which is potentially detrimental to the emission control of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). Herein, a field study focusing on the distribution and variation of PCDD/Fs in gaseous and solid phases in a baghouse filter with high operating temperature (225-230 °C) was carried out. The concentration of PCDD/Fs in gases at the outlet of the baghouse filter was around 1 order of magnitude higher than that in inlet gases (i.e., noticeable memory effect of PCDD/Fs), because of the significant PCDD/Fs formation in filter fly ash (primarily contributed by the precursor pathway) followed by PCDD/Fs desorption. In addition, the mechanisms and factors resulting in the memory effect of PCDD/Fs were identified based on a laboratory study that carefully investigated the formation and desorption of PCDD/Fs at potential operating temperatures of baghouse filters (i.e., 180, 200, and 225 °C). The temperature was identified as the key factor inducing the memory effect of PCDD/Fs, because: i) PCDD/Fs memory effect was not observed for baghouse filters with low operating temperatures of ~150 °C in previous studies; ii) both the formation and desorption of PCDD/Fs were noticeably favored by rising temperature from 180 to 225 °C; iii) increasing temperature appeared to facilitate the transformation from inorganic Cl to organic Cl and the conversion from aliphatic carbon to aromatic carbon or unsaturated hydrocarbons, both of which were favorable to PCDD/Fs formation; and iv) the release rate of PCDD/Fs from fly ash was exponentially dependent on temperature based on the modeling results of reaction kinetics.

PCDD/Fs from a large-scale municipal solid waste incinerator under transient operations: Insight formation pathways and optimal reduction strategies

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) emissions from the transient operation of municipal solid waste incinerators can reach up to 690 ng/Nm³, as measured in this study. To control the extreme emissions to meet the national standard, the formation pathways of PCDD/F were investigated under transient operations (cold start-up, hot start-up, and after start-up) and normal operations. Compared with normal operations, transient operations facilitate the formation of low-chlorinated congeners rather than highly chlorinated congeners. Statistically, for transient operations, strong correlations were found among tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin or tetrachlorodibenzofuran isomers. An abundant carbon matrix is an important carbon source for PCDD formation. Moreover, the comprehensive study revealed that the oxidation of deposited soot is the main source of PCDD/F emissions, relative to de novo synthesis, chlorobenzene-route synthesis, chlorophenol-route synthesis, and chlorination of dibenzo-p-dioxin/dibenzofuran. In addition, the optimal start-up procedure was constructed by analyzing main formation pathways and operating conditions. The relationship between the international toxic quantity (I-TEQ) values (C_I-TEQ) and the reaction time can be assigned as C_I-TEQ = 11.72t^-0.65 (R² = 0.97) for the circulating fluidized bed. The relationship of C_I-TEQ = 4.61t^-0.59 (R² = 0.85) was also proven on the dataset with a grate furnace. Then, the optimal feeding rate of activated carbon was further proposed by the relationship between the reaction time and I-TEQ, and the semi-empirical equation for PCDD/Fs adsorption. Finally, the PCDD/Fs emissions can be reduced to 0.1 ng I-TEQ/Nm³ under transient operations according to the time since start-up.

Inhibition of chlorobenzenes formation by calcium oxide during solid waste incineration

Solid waste incineration is a major emission source of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs). The injection of N- and S-containing compounds is an effective way to suppress the formation of PCDD/Fs, but this approach is still shortcoming because additional pollutants such as NH₃ and SO_x are emitted. To avoid the secondary pollutions, a de novo synthesis inhibition mechanism in the presence of CaO was postulated to transform CuCl₂ to CuO and deplete Cl₂ and HCl. Chlorobenzenes (CBzs), which are indicators and precursors of PCDD/Fs, were adopted to prove the inhibitory effect of CaO at 400 °C, using both simulated synthetic ash and extracted air pollution control residues. As the molar ratio of CaO to CuCl₂ exceeded 3, the residual carbon increased, and the inhibition efficiency of CBzs exceeded 93 %. This performance is superior to the corresponding performance of NH₄H₂PO₄, which has been proved to be a potential inhibitor. Furthermore, with CaO, chlorides remained in the solid phase and had inactive catalytic performance; and they were the major products rather than HCl, Cl₂ and Cu₂OCl₂. The addition of CaO during waste incineration therefore can facilitate the abatement of PCDD/Fs contamination and reduce the emissions of acid gas simultaneously.

PCDD/F and dioxin-like PCB minimization: A 13-year experimental study along the flue gas cleaning system of a secondary aluminium refining plant

A 13-years study shows that a careful design of the flue gas cleaning system of a full scale secondary aluminium refining plant results in a minimized and very stable emission of Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-Dioxins (PCDD), Polychlorinated Dibenzo Furans (PCDF) and dioxin-like Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCB). The value of equivalent toxicity of PCDD/F in the emission was definitely of an order of magnitude less than the regulation limit. In the initial flue gas cleaning system, the PCB mean fingerprint after the slow cooling of the flue gas was typical of de novo synthesis. Instead, in the presence of quenching, there was evidence that the fast cooling of flue gas prevented the PCB de novo synthesis. In fact, the PCB profile was similar to that in the air collected from the aspiration hoods for the quenching. The gas-phase and solid-phase partitioning of PCBs, before and after the fabric filters, highlights the predominant role of the vapor phase with respect to the total removal efficiency. The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons breakdown could be an additional de novo formation pathway even in industrial plants.

The rate-determining step in a low temperature PCDD/F formation from oxidative breakdown of native carbon in MSWI fly ash

We developed a phenomenological approach to explain the kinetic experimental data of PCDD/F formation/destruction based on a reaction mechanism model at the congener group level. In the present work, we investigated the formation and destruction of PCDD/F on fly ash as a function of time at 280 °C, chlorine mass balance, evolution of the total equivalent toxicity and kinetic modelling. We determined that the volatilization process is negligible and that the reactive processes at short reaction times only become important above 300 °C. The results provide a substantial improvement on existing studies. We experimentally demonstrated, for the first time, that there is a correlation between the oxidative breakdown of native carbon and PCDD/F de novo synthesis. Data processing by our kinetic model showed that the formation of oxygen complexes C(O) was the determining step for de novo synthesis of PCDD/F. Indeed, the calculated reaction time at which the PCDD/F concentration was at a maximum (850 min) was greater than that calculated for the oxygen complexes C(O) (435 min). Moreover, the experimental carbon conversion efficiency for PCDD/F production (0.0032% at 600 min maximum) was in a very good agreement with the theoretical conversion (0.0041%).

The effect of transient operations on the levels and congener profiles of PCBz, PCPh and PCDD/F in raw flue gases of MSWI plant

The concentrations and congener profiles of polychlorinated benzenes, phenols, dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofurans, measured in raw flue gases of a real MSWI plant, are discussed in this paper. The data covers steady-state and transient operation conditions, including the memory effect period close to two shutdowns. The highest levels of concentrations of the pollutants were observed the first day after the shutdown with subsequent gradual decrease towards steady-state values. The conditions of the steady-state period prior to shutdown are decisive for the increase of start-up values, memory effect values and memory effect length. We found that the above-mentioned pollutants had a different length of the memory effect period. It can be concluded that under plant transient operation the formation of pollutants by the de novo synthesis is higher than under steady-state conditions.

Kinetic modeling of the formation and destruction of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxin and dibenzofuran from fly ash native carbon at 300 °C

The kinetics for the oxidative breakdown of native carbon in raw fly ash samples (RFA) and for the formation and destruction of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDF), abbreviated PCDD/F, were investigated using a flow-over solid system in which the RFA samples were thermally treated at 300 °C under synthetic air. This study investigated the correlation between the disappearance of the reagent and the formation of the products to gain insight into the underlying mechanisms that govern these reactions at congener groups level. The detailed analyses of the experimental concentration-time data revealed significant differences in the behavior between the 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD and the 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDF, non-2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD and PCDF. The chlorine balance for the former was always negative, that is, chlorine was released regardless of reaction time and primarily resulted from the dechlorination of the hepta- and octa-homologues. However, for the others, the balance was substantially positive up to approximately 240 min and became negative at longer intervals when the dechlorination reactions took over. The processes involving PCDD and PCDF in which the thermal destruction was only partial were found to increase the total equivalent toxicity (TEQ) levels rather than reduce them.

Destruction and formation of PCDD/Fs in a fluidised bed combustor co-incinerating automotive shredder residue with refuse derived fuel and wastewater treatment sludge

During an eight day trial automotive shredder residue (ASR) was added to the usual waste feed of a Fluidized Bed Combustor (FBC) for waste-to-energy conversion; the input waste mix consisted of 25% ASR, 25% refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and 50% wastewater treatment (WWT) sludge. All inputs and outputs were sampled and the concentration of the 17 PCDD/Fs with TEF-values was determined in order to obtain "PCDD/F fingerprints". The ASR contained approximately 9000 ng PCDD/Fs/kg(DW), six times more than the RDF and 10 times more than the WWT sludge. The fingerprint of ASR and RDF was dominated by HpCDD and OCDD, which accounted for 90% of the total PDDD/F content, whereas the WWT sludge contained relatively more HpCDFs and OCDF (together 70%). The flue gas cleaning residue (FGCR) and fly and boiler ash contained approximately 30,000 and 2500 ng PCDD/Fs/kg(DW), respectively. The fingerprints of these outputs were also dominated by HpCDFs and OCDF. The bottom ash contained only OCDD and OCDF, in total 8 ng PCDD/Fs/kg (DW). From the comparison of the bottom ash fingerprints with the fingerprints of the other output fractions and of the inputs, it could be concluded that the PCDD/Fs in the waste were destroyed and new PCDD/Fs were formed in the post combustion process by de novo synthesis. During the ASR-co-incineration, the PCDD/F congener concentrations in the fly and boiler ash, FGCR and flue gas were 1.25-10 times higher compared to the same output fractions generated during incineration of the usual waste mix (70% RDF and 30% WWT sludge). The concentration of the higher chlorinated PCDD/Fs increased most. As these congeners have the lowest TEF-factors, the total PCDD/F output, expressed in kg TEQ/year, of the FBC did not increase significantly when ASR was co-incinerated. Due to the relatively high copper levels in the ASR, the copper concentrations in the FBCs outputs increased. As copper catalysis the de novo syntheses, this could explain the increase in PCDD/F concentrations in these outputs.

Kinetics of carbon degradation and PCDD/PCDF formation on MSWI fly ash

The native carbon oxidation and PolyChloroDibenzo-p-Dioxins and PolyChloroDibenzoFurans, PCDD/F, formation were simultaneously studied at different temperatures (230-350 degrees C) and times (0-1440 min) in order to establish a direct correlation between the disappearance of the reagent and the formation of the products. The kinetic runs were conducted in an experimental set up where conditions were chosen to gain information on the role of fly ash deposits in cold zones of municipal solid waste incinerators in PCDD/F formation reaction. The carbon oxidation measured as the decrease of total organic carbon of fly ash was in agreement with the carbon evolved as sum of CO and CO(2). The carbon mass balance indicated an increase in the efficiency of carbon conversion in CO and CO(2) with temperature. The CO and CO(2) formation was the result of two parallel pseudo first order reactions thus giving significant information about the reaction mechanism. PCDD/F formation as a function of temperature showed that the maximum formation was achieved in a narrow range around 280 degrees C; the time effect at 280 degrees C was a progressive formation increase at least up to 900 min. The PCDF:PCDD molar ratio increased with temperature and time, and the most abundant homologues were HxCDD, HpCDD, OCDD for PCDD, and HxCDF, HpCDF within PCDF. These experimental results supported the hypothesis that the formation mechanism was the de novo synthesis.
