Synthesis, molecular and electronic structure, and TDDFT and TDDFT-PCM study of the solvatochromic properties of (Me2Pipdt)Mo(CO)4 complex (Me2Pipdt = N,N'-dimethylpiperazine-2,3-dithione)

A density functional theory study of the molecular structure, reactivity, and spectroscopic properties of 2-(2-mercaptophenyl)-1-azaazulene tautomers and rotamers

Five stable tautomer and rotamers of the 2-(2-Mercaptophenyl)-1-azaazulene (thiol, thione, R1, R2, and R3) molecules were studied using density functional theory (DFT). The geometries of the studied tautomer and rotamers were fully optimized at the B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. Thermodynamic calculations were performed at M06-2X/6-311G++(2d,2p) and ωB97XD/6-311G++(2d,2p) in the gas phase and ethanol solution conditions modeled by the solvation model based on density (SMD). The kinetic constant of tautomer and rotamers conversion was calculated in the temperature range 270-320 K using variational transition state theory (VTST) accompanied by one-dimensional wigner tunneling correction. Energy refinement at CCSD(T)/6-311++G(2d,2p) in the gas phase has been calculated. All the studied DFT methods qualitatively give similar tautomer stability orders in the gas phase. The ethanol solvent causes some reordering of the relative stability of 2-(2-Mercaptophenyl)-1-azaazulene conformers. The transition states for the 2-(2-Mercaptophenyl)-1-azaazulene tautomerization and rotamerization processes were also determined. The reactivity, electric dipole moment, and spectroscopic properties of the studied tautomer and rotamers were computed. The hyper-Rayleigh scattering (βHRS), and depolarization ratio (DR) exhibited promising optical properties when nonlinear optical properties were calculated.

Synthesis, X-ray Structure, Hirshfeld, DFT Conformational, Cytotoxic, and Anti-Toxoplasma Studies of New Indole-Hydrazone Derivatives

The hydrazones 3a-c, were synthesized from the reaction of indole-3-carbaldehyde and nicotinic acid hydrazide, isonicotinic acid hydrazide, and benzoic acid hydrazide, respectively. Their structures were confirmed using FTIR, 1HNMR, and 13CNMR spectroscopic techniques. Exclusively, hydrazones 3b and 3c were confirmed using single crystal X-ray crystallography to exist in the Eanti form. With the aid of DFT calculations, the most stable configuration of the hydrazones 3a-c in gas phase and in nonpolar solvents (CCl4 and cyclohexane) is the ESyn form. Interestingly, the DFT calculations indicated the extrastability of the EAnti in polar aprotic (DMSO) and polar protic (ethanol) solvents. Hirshfeld topology analysis revealed the importance of the N…H, O…H, H…C, and π…π intermolecular interactions in the molecular packing of the studied systems. Distribution of the atomic charges for the hydrazones 3a-c was presented. The hydrazones 3a-c showed a polar character where 3b has the highest polarity of 5.7234 Debye compared to the 3a (4.0533 Debye) and 3c (5.3099 Debye). Regarding the anti-toxoplasma activity, all the detected results verified that 3c had a powerful activity against chronic toxoplasma infection. Compound 3c showed a considerable significant reduction percent of cyst burden in brain homogenates of toxoplasma infected mice representing 49%.

Influence of the ligand-field on EPR parameters of cis- and trans-isomers in MoV systems relevant to molybdenum enzymes: Experimental and density functional theory study

The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) investigation of mononuclear cis- and trans-(L1O)MoOCl2 complexes [L1OH = bis(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)-3-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-5-methylphenyl)methane] reveals a significant difference in their spin Hamiltonian parameters which reflect different equatorial and axial ligand fields created by the heteroscorpionate donor atoms. Density functional theory (DFT) was used to calculate the values of principal components and relative orientations of the g and A tensors, and the molecular framework in four pairs of isomeric mononuclear oxo‑molybdenum(V) complexes (cis- and trans-(L1O)MoOCl2, cis,cis- and cis,trans-(L-N2S2)MoOCl [L-N2S2H2 = N,N'-dimethyl-N,N'-bis(mercaptophenyl)ethylenediamine], cis,cis- and cis,trans-(L-N2S2)MoO(SCN), and cis- and trans-[(dt)2MoO(OMe)]2- [dtH2 = 2,3-dimercapto-2-butene]). Scalar relativistic DFT calculations were conducted using three different exchange-correlation functionals. It was found that the use of hybrid exchange-correlation functional with 25% of the Hartree-Fock exchange leads to the best quantitative agreement between theory and experiment. A simplified ligand-field approach was used to analyze the influence of the ligand fields in all cis- and trans-isomers on energies and contributions of molybdenum d-orbital manifold to g and A tensors and relative orientations. Specifically, contributions that originated from the spin-orbit coupling of the dxz, dyz, and dx2-y2 orbitals into the ground state have been discussed. The new findings are discussed in the context of the experimental data of mononuclear molybdoenzyme, DMSO reductase.

S K-edge XAS of CuII, CuI, and ZnII oxidized Dithiolene complexes: Covalent contributions to structure and the Jahn-Teller effect

Reduced dithiolene ligands are bound to high valent Mo centers in the active site of the oxotransferase family of enzymes. Related model complexes have been studied with great insight by Prof. Holm and his colleagues. This study focuses on the other limit of dithiolene chemistry: an investigation of the 2-electron oxidized dithiolene bound to low-valent late transition metal (TM) ions (ZnII, CuI, and CuII). The bonding descriptions of the oxidized dithiolene [N,N-dimethyl piperazine 2,3-dithione (Me2Dt0)] complexes are probed using S K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and the results are correlated to density functional theory (DFT) calculations. These experimentally supported calculations are then extended to explain the different geometric structures of the three complexes. The ZnII(Me2Dt0)2 complex has only ligand-ligand repulsion so it is stabilized at the D2d symmetry limit. The CuI(Me2Dt0)2 complex has additional weak backbonding thus distorts somewhat from D2d toward D2h symmetry. The CuII(Me2Dt0)2 complex has a strong σ donor bond that leads to both a large Jahn-Teller stabilization to D2h and an additional covalent contribution to the geometry. The combined strong stabilization results in the square planar, D2h structure. This study quantifies the competition between the ligand-ligand repulsion and the change in electronic structures in determining the final geometric structures of the oxidized dithiolene complexes, and provides quantitative insights into the Jahn-Teller stabilization energy and its origin.

Interligand communication in a metal mediated LL'CT system - a case study

A series of oxo-Mo(iv) complexes, [MoO(Dt²⁻)(Dt⁰)] (where Dt²⁻ = benzene-1,2-dithiol (bdt), toluene-3,4-dithiol (tdt), quinoxaline-2,3-dithiol (qdt), or 3,6-dichloro-benzene-1,2-dithiol (bdtCl₂); Dt⁰ = N,N′-dimethylpiperazine-2,3-dithione (Me₂Dt⁰) or N,N′-diisopropylpiperazine-2,3-dithione (ⁱPr₂Dt⁰)), possessing a fully oxidized and a fully reduced dithiolene ligand have been synthesized and characterized. The assigned oxidation states of coordinated dithiolene ligands are supported with spectral and crystallographic data. The molecular structure of [MoO(tdt)(ⁱPr₂Dt⁰)] (6) demonstrates a large ligand fold angle of 62.6° along the S⋯S vector of the Dt⁰ ligand. The electronic structure of this system is probed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The HOMO is largely localized on the Dt²⁻ ligand while virtual orbitals are mostly Mo and Dt⁰ in character. Modeling the electronic spectrum of 6 with time dependent (TD) DFT calculations attributes the intense low energy transition at ∼18 000 cm⁻¹ to a ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LL′CT). The electron density difference map (EDDM) for the low energy transition depicts the electron rich Dt²⁻ ligand donating charge density to the redox-active orbitals of the electron deficient Dt⁰ ligand. Electronic communication between dithiolene ligands is facilitated by a Mo-monooxo center and distortion about its primary coordination sphere.

The interligand communication between non-innocent dithiolene ligands of different oxidation states has been described in a Mo system. The fully reduced ene-dithiolate (Dt²⁻) acts as a donor moiety to the oxidized dithione (Dt⁰) in an LL′CT process.

Syntheses, spectroscopic, redox, and structural properties of homoleptic Iron(III/II) dithione complexes

Two sets of FeIII/II dithione complexes [FeII( i Pr2Dt0)3][PF6]2 ([1][PF6]2), [FeII(Me2Dt0)3][PF6]2 ([2][PF6]2), and [FeIII( i Pr2Dt0)3][PF6]3 ([3][PF6]3), [FeIII(Me2Dt0)3][PF6]3 ([4][PF6]3), and compound [FeIII( i Pr2Dt0)3][FeCl4][PF]2 ([3][FeCl4][PF6]2) were synthesized from N,N'-diisopropyl piperazine-2,3-dithione ( i Pr2Dt0) and N,N'-dimethyl piperazine-2,3-dithione (Me2Dt0) ligands. Complexes [1][PF6]2-[4][PF6]3 have been characterized by NMR, IR, and UV-visible spectroscopies, and by electrochemistry. The molecular structures of [2][PF6]2 and [3][FeCl4][PF6]2 have been determined by X-ray crystallography. Complexes [2][PF6]2 and [3][FeCl4][PF6]2 both crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/n. Both complexes exhibit distorted octahedral geometry and the three coordinated ligands in each complex exhibit different dithione folding. Complexes [1][PF6]2-[4][PF6]3 exhibit a single FeIII/II based couple and three quasi-reversible ligand-based redox couples. The electronic spectra of [1][PF6]2-[4][PF6]3 show intense MLCT bands that indicate strong mixing between metal and ligand orbitals. DFT calculations were used to provide a framework for understanding the electronic origin of their redox chemistry and spectroscopic features.

Dithione, the antipodal redox partner of ene-1,2-dithiol ligands and their metal complexes

Defining the oxidation state of the central atom in a coordination compound is fundamental in understanding the electronic structure and provides a starting point for elucidating molecular properties. The presence of non-innocent ligand(s) can obscure the oxidation state of the central atom as the ligand contribution to the electronic structure is difficult to ascertain. Redox-active ligands, such as dithiolene ligands, are well known non-innocent ligands that can exist in both a fully reduced (Dt2-) and fully oxidized (Dt0) states. Complexes containing the fully oxidized dithione state of the ligand are uncommon and only a few have been completely characterized. Dithione ligands are of interest due to their electron-deficient nature and ability to act as an electron acceptor for more electron-rich moieties, such as other dithiolene ligands or metal centers. This article focuses the syntheses, structures, and metal coordination, particularly coordination compounds, of dithione ligands. Various examples of mono, bis, and tris dithione complexes are discussed.

Synthesis and Characterization of Strongly Solvatochromic Molybdenum(III) Complexes

A series of seven molybdenum(III) complexes with the general formula of [Mo(diimine)Cl₄]^- were synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction, IR, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and UV-vis. The complexes were discovered to be highly solvatochromic, showing shifts in λ_max between ∼120 and 170 nm in solvents ranging from water to acetone. Varying the substituents on the diimine ligand influenced the absorption energy such that electron-withdrawing groups induced a red shift while electron-donating groups exhibited the opposite effect. The complexes were surprisingly stable in both acidic and basic solutions, and in the case where carboxylic acid substituents were present, additional shifts in the absorption maxima were observed, corresponding to the state of protonation of these groups. Both the Mo^IV/III and Mo^III/II redox couples were observed in CV experiments and were complemented with density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Synthesis, Spectroscopic Characterization, and Time-Dependent DFT Calculations of 1-Methyl-5-phenyl-5H-pyrido[1,2-a]quinazoline-3,6-dione and Its Starting Precursor in Different Solvents

In this study, 2-mercapto-3-phenyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-quinazolin-4-one (1), which exists as a thiol and thione tautomer, was treated with acetylacetone to give the target compound, namely, 1-methyl-5-phenyl-5H-pyrido[1,2-a]quinazoline-3,6-dione (2). The spectroscopic data, including UV/Vis, IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and mass data, of this compound were recorded. The molecular structures of the starting material (1) and the product (2) were optimized by using density functional theory (DFT) by employing the B3LYP exchange correlation with the 6-311G (d, p) and 6-31G++ (d, p) basis sets. The electronic spectra were determined based on time-dependent DFT calculations in three different solvents (i.e., chloroform, ethanol, and acetonitrile) starting from the same solvated run of the optimized geometry with the same two basis sets. The solvent effects were considered based on the polarizable continuum model (PCM), and the energetic behavior of the compounds and the total static dipole moment (μ) in different solvents were examined in the two basis sets; the results showed that the total energy of the compounds decreased upon increasing the polarity of the solvent. Time-dependent DFT calculations were performed to analyze the electronic transitions for various excited states that reproduced the experimental band observed in the UV/Vis spectrum. A study on the electronic properties, such as the HOMO and LUMO energies, was performed by the time-independent DFT approach. Using the gauge-independent atomic orbital method (GIAO), the 1H NMR chemical shifts were calculated and correlated with the experimental ones. The computed results showed that the introduction of different dielectric media had a slight effect on the stability and reactivity of the title compound as well as on the Milliken atomic charges and the molecular geometry. Besides, the molecular electrostatic potential of target product 2 was evaluated in different solvents.

Large Ligand Folding Distortion in an Oxomolybdenum Donor-Acceptor Complex

Interligand charge transfer is examined in the novel metallo-dithiolene complex MoO(SPh)2((i)Pr2Dt(0)) (where (i)Pr2Dt(0) = N,N'-isopropyl-piperazine-2,3-dithione). The title complex displays a remarkable 70° "envelope"-type fold of the five-membered dithiolene ring, which is bent upward toward the terminal oxo ligand. A combination of electronic absorption and resonance Raman spectroscopies have been used to probe the basic electronic structure responsible for the large fold-angle distortion. The intense charge transfer transition observed at ∼18 000 cm(-1) is assigned as a thiolate → dithione ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LL'CT) transition that also possesses Mo(IV) → dithione charge transfer character. Strong orbital mixing between occupied and virtual orbitals with Mo(x(2)-y(2)) orbital character is derived from a strong pseudo Jahn-Teller effect, which drives the large fold-angle distortion to yield a double-well potential in the electronic ground state.

Solution, Solid, and Gas Phase Studies on a Nickel Dithiolene System: Spectator Metal and Reactor Ligand

The syntheses of cationic nickel complexes using N,N'-dimethyl piperazine 2,3-dithione (Me2Dt(0)) and N,N'-diisopropyl piperazine 2,3-dithione ((i)Pr2Dt(0)) ligands are reported. These ligands were used in synthesizing bis and tris(dithione)Ni(II) complexes as tetrafluoroborate or hexafluorophosphate salts, i.e., [Ni((i)Pr2Dt(0))2][BF4]2 ([1a][BF4]2), [Ni((i)Pr2Dt(0))2][PF6]2 ([1a][PF6]2), [Ni(Me2Dt(0))2][BF4]2 ([1b][BF4]2), [Ni((i)Pr2Dt(0))3][BF4]2 ([2a][BF4]2), and [Ni((i)Pr2Dt(0))3][PF6]2 ([2a][PF6]2), respectively. Complex [2a][PF6]2 was isolated from a methanolic solution of [1a][PF6]2. Compound [1a][BF4]2 crystallizes in a trigonal crystal system (space group, P31/c) and exhibits unique packing features, whereas [2a][BF4]2 crystallizes in a monoclinic (P21/n) space group. Cyclic voltammograms of [1a][BF4]2 and [1b][BF4]2 are indicative of four reduction processes associated with stepwise single-electron reduction of the ligands. Spectroelectrochemical experiments on [1a][BF4]2 exhibit an intervalence charge transfer (IVCT) transition as a spectroscopic signature of the mixed-valence [Ni((i)Pr2Dt(0))((i)Pr2Dt(1-))](-) species. Analysis of this IVCT band suggests that this ligand based mixed valence complex, [Ni((i)Pr2Dt(0))((i)Pr2Dt(1-))](-), behaves more like a traditional class II/III metal based mixed-valence complex. The density functional theory (DFT) and time dependent DFT calculations provide a theoretical framework for understanding the electronic structures and the nature of excited states of the target compounds that are consistent with their spectroscopic and redox properties. Vibrational spectra of [1a](2+) and [2a](2+) were investigated as discrete species in the gas phase using infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy.

Recent developments in the study of molybdoenzyme models

Over the past two decades, a plethora of crystal structures of molybdenum enzymes has appeared in the literature providing a clearer picture of the enzymatic active sites and increasing the challenge to chemists to develop accurate models for those sites. In this minireview we discuss the most recent model studies aimed to reproduce detailed features of the pterin-dithiolene ligand, both as the uncoordinated form and as a chelate coordinated to molybdenum.

Tuning the oxidation state and magnetic and coordination behaviour of iron and cobalt complexes by O/S variation in mono-thio and dithio-oxamide chelating ligands

A variety of iron and cobalt complexes which differ in coordination, metal oxidation state, and spin state is obtained with corresponding S,O and S,S′ title ligands.

Hydrazine-mediated strongly coupled Re(CO)3 dimers

We present two strongly coupled Re(CO)₃ dimers, where the metals are linked via a bis-hydrazine Schiff base ligand as well as their monomeric analogs. Strong coupling between the ligand based orbitals the dimers is observed as measured by reductive cyclic voltammetry.

Nitrate and periplasmic nitrate reductases

The nitrate anion is a simple, abundant and relatively stable species, yet plays a significant role in global cycling of nitrogen, global climate change, and human health. Although it has been known for quite some time that nitrate is an important species environmentally, recent studies have identified potential medical applications. In this respect the nitrate anion remains an enigmatic species that promises to offer exciting science in years to come. Many bacteria readily reduce nitrate to nitrite via nitrate reductases. Classified into three distinct types--periplasmic nitrate reductase (Nap), respiratory nitrate reductase (Nar) and assimilatory nitrate reductase (Nas), they are defined by their cellular location, operon organization and active site structure. Of these, Nap proteins are the focus of this review. Despite similarities in the catalytic and spectroscopic properties Nap from different Proteobacteria are phylogenetically distinct. This review has two major sections: in the first section, nitrate in the nitrogen cycle and human health, taxonomy of nitrate reductases, assimilatory and dissimilatory nitrate reduction, cellular locations of nitrate reductases, structural and redox chemistry are discussed. The second section focuses on the features of periplasmic nitrate reductase where the catalytic subunit of the Nap and its kinetic properties, auxiliary Nap proteins, operon structure and phylogenetic relationships are discussed.

Tautomerism and spectroscopic properties of the immunosuppressant azathioprine

The molecular structure and the relative stabilities of the four possible tautomers of the immunosuppressant azathioprine (AZA) are calculated by DFT/B3LYP method using different basis sets. The results of the energy analysis and thermodynamic treatment of the obtained data are used to predict the relative stabilities of the AZA tautomers. The effect of solvents such as DMSO and water on the stability of the AZA tautomers was studied using the polarized continuum method (PCM) at the same level of theory. The calculation predicted that, the total energies of all tautomers are decreased indicating that all tautomers are more or less stabilized by the solvent effect. The vibrational spectra of AZA are calculated using the same level of theory and the results are compared with the experimentally measured FTIR spectra. Good correlation is obtained between the experimental and calculated vibrational frequencies (R(2)=0.997). The electronic spectra of AZA in gas phase and in methanol as solvent are calculated using the TD-DFT method. The calculations predicted bathochromic shift in all the spectral bands in presence of solvent compared to the gas phase. Also the NMR spectra of all tautomers are calculated and the results are correlated with the experimental NMR chemical shifts where the most stable tautomer gives the best correlation coefficient (R(2)=0.996).

Insight into the electronic structure, optical properties, and redox behavior of the hybrid phthalocyaninoclathrochelates from experimental and density functional theory approaches

An insight into the electronic structure of several hafnium(IV), zirconium(IV), and lutetium(III) phthalocyaninoclathrochelates has been discussed on the basis of experimental UV-vis, MCD, electro- and spectroelectrochemical data as well as density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations. On the basis of UV-vis and MCD spectroscopy as well as theoretical predictions, it was concluded that the electronic structure of the phthalocyninoclathrochelates can be described in the first approximation as a superposition of the weakly interacting phthalocyanine and clathrochelate substituents. Spectroelectrochemical data and DFT calculations clearly confirm that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) in all tested complexes is localized on the phthalocyanine ligand. X-ray crystallography on zirconium(IV) and earlier reported hafnium(IV) phthalocyaninoclathrochelate complexes revealed a slightly distorted phthalocyanine conformation with seven-coordinated metal center positioned ∼1 Å above macrocyclic cavity. The geometry of the encapsulated iron(II) ion in the clathrochelate fragment was found to be between trigonal-prismatic and trigonal-antiprismatic.

Synthesis, spectroscopic characterizations and quantum chemical computational studies of (Z)-4-[(E)-p-tolyldiazenyl]-6-[(2-hydroxyphenylamino)methylene]-2-methoxycyclohexa-2,4-dienone

In this study, the molecular structure and spectroscopic properties of title compound were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopies. These properties of title compound were also investigated from calculative point of view. The X-ray diffraction and FT-IR analyses reveal the existence of keto form in the solid state. UV-vis spectra were recorded in different organic solvents. The results show that title compound exists in both keto and enol forms in DMSO, EtOH but it exists in enol form in benzene. In addition, the title compound in DMSO showed new absorption band at 436 nm due to the high ionizing effect of this solvent. The geometry optimization of title compound in gas phase was performed using DFT method with B3LYP applying 6-311G(d,p) basis set. TD-DFT calculations starting from optimized geometry were carried out in gas phase to calculate excitation energies of title compound. The non-linear optical properties were computed with the same level of theory and title compound showed a good second order nonlinear optical property. In addition, thermodynamic properties were obtained in the range of 100-500 K.

Photoinduced charge transfer in short-distance ferrocenylsubphthalocyanine dyads

Two new ferrocenylsubphthalocyanine dyads with ferrocenylmethoxide (2) and ferrocenecarboxylate (3) substituents directly attached to the subphthalocyanine ligand via the axial position have been prepared and characterized using NMR, UV-vis, and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectroscopies as well as X-ray crystallography. The redox properties of the ferrocenyl-containing dyads 2 and 3 were investigated using the cyclic voltammetry (CV) approach and compared to those of the parent subphthalocyanine 1. CV data reveal that the first reversible oxidation is ferrocene-centered, while the second oxidation and the first reduction are localized on the subphthalocyanine ligand. The electronic structures and nature of the optical bands observed in the UV-vis and MCD spectra of all target compounds were investigated by a density functional theory polarized continuum model (DFT-PCM) and time-dependent (TD)DFT-PCM approaches. It has been found that in both dyads the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) to HOMO-2 are ferrocene-centered molecular orbitals, while HOMO-3 as well as lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) and LUMO+1 are localized on the subphthalocyanine ligand. TDDFT-PCM data on complexes 1-3 are consistent with the experimental observations, which indicate the dominance of π-π* transitions in the UV-vis spectra of 1-3. The excited-state dynamics of the dyads 2 and 3 were investigated using time-correlated single photon counting, which indicates that fluorescence quenching is more efficient in dyad 3 compared to dyad 2. These fluorescence lifetime measurements were interpreted on the basis of DFT-PCM calculations.

Synthesis, spectroscopic characterizations and quantum chemical computational studies of (Z)-4-[(E)-(4-fluorophenyl)diazenyl]-6-[(3-hydroxypropylamino)methylene]-2-methoxycyclohexa-2,4-dienone

In this study, the molecular structure and spectroscopic properties of the title compound were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR and UV-vis spectroscopies. These properties were also investigated using DFT method. The most convenient conformation of title compound was firstly determined. The geometry optimizations in gas phase and solvent media were performed by DFT methods with B3LYP adding 6-31G(d) basis set. The differences between crystal and computational structures are due to crystal packing in which hydrogen bonds play an important role. UV-vis spectra were recorded in different organic solvents. The results show that title compound exists in both keto and enol forms in DMSO, EtOH but it tends to shift towards enol form in benzene. The polar solvents facilitate the proton transfer by decreasing the activation energy needed for Transition State. The formation of both keto and enol forms in DMSO and EtOH is due to decrease in the activation energy. TD-DFT calculations starting from optimized geometry were carried out in both gas and solution phases to calculate excitation energies of the title compound. The non-linear optical properties were computed at the theory level and the title compound showed a good second order non-linear optical property. In addition, thermodynamic properties were obtained in the range of 100-500K.

Study of molybdenum(4+) quinoxalyldithiolenes as models for the noninnocent pyranopterin in the molybdenum cofactor

A model system for the molybdenum cofactor has been developed that illustrates the noninnocent behavior of an N-heterocycle appended to a dithiolene chelate on molybdenum. The pyranopterin of the molybdenum cofactor is modeled by a quinoxalyldithiolene ligand (S(2)BMOQO) formed from the reaction of molybdenum tetrasulfide and quinoxalylalkyne. The resulting complexes TEA[Tp*MoX(S(2)BMOQO)] [1, X = S; 3, X = O; TEA = tetraethylammonium; Tp* = hydrotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazolyl)borate] undergo a dehydration-driven intramolecular cyclization within quinoxalyldithiolene, forming Tp*MoX(pyrrolo-S(2)BMOQO) (2, X = S; 4, X = O). 4 can be oxidized by one electron to produce the molybdenum(5+) complex 5. In a preliminary report of this work, evidence from X-ray crystallography, electronic absorption and resonance Raman spectroscopies, and density functional theory (DFT) bonding calculations revealed that 4 possesses an unusual asymmetric dithiolene chelate with significant thione-thiolate character. The results described here provide a detailed description of the reaction conditions that lead to the formation of 4. Data from cyclic voltammetry, additional DFT calculations, and several spectroscopic methods (IR, electronic absorption, resonance Raman, and electron paramagnetic resonance) have been used to characterize the properties of members in this suite of five Mo(S(2)BMOQO) complexes and further substantiate the highly electron-withdrawing character of the pyrrolo-S(2)BMOQO ligand in 2, 4, and 5. This study of the unique noninnocent ligand S(2)BMOQO provides examples of the roles that the N-heterocycle pterin can play as an essential part of the molybdenum cofactor. The versatile nature of a dithiolene appended by heterocycles may aid in modulating the redox processes of the molybdenum center during the course of enzyme catalysis.

Comparative calculation of EPR spectral parameters in [Mo(V)OX4]-, [Mo(V)OX5]2-, and [Mo(V)OX4(H2O)]- complexes

The EPR spectral parameters, i.e. g-tensors and molybdenum hyperfine couplings, for several d(1) systems of the general formula [Mo(V)EX(4)](n-), [Mo(V)OX(5)](2-), and [Mo(V)OX(4)(H(2)O)](-) (E = O, N; X = F, Cl, Br; n = 1 or 2) were calculated using Density Functional Theory. The influence of basis sets, their contraction scheme, the type of exchange-correlation functional, the amount of Hartree-Fock exchange, molecular geometry, and relativistic effects on the calculated EPR spectra parameters have been discussed. The g-tensors and molybdenum hyperfine coupling parameters were calculated using a relativistic Hamiltonian coupled with several LDA, GGA, and 'hybrid' exchange-correlation functionals and uncontracted full-electron DGauss DZVP basis sets. The calculated EPR parameters are found to be sensitive to the Mo=E distance and E=Mo-Cl angle, and thus the choice of starting molecular geometry should be considered as an important factor in predicting the g-tensors and hyperfine coupling constants in oxo-molybdenum compounds. In the present case, the GGA exchange-correlation functionals provide a better agreement between the theory and the experiment.

Synthesis, characterization and structure of a low coordinate desoxomolybdenum cluster stabilized by a dithione ligand

Using an oxidized state of a dithiolene ligand, diisopropylpiperazine-2,3-dithione (i-Pr(2)Pipdt), two monooxo-molybdenum complexes have been synthesized. From one of them, a desoxomolybdenum cluster, [(i-Pr(2)Pipdt)Mo](4)[BF(4)](4) has been prepared. The molecular structure of this cluster reveals metal-metal interactions and weak coordination by the BF(4) anion.

Exploring the ground and excited state potential energy landscapes of the mixed-valence biferrocenium complex

Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) have been used to explore the potential energy landscapes in the class II (in Robin and Day classification) mixed-valence biferrocenium mono-cation (BF(+)) in an effort to evaluate factors affecting optical and thermal intramolecular electron transfer rates. Both energy- and spectroscopy-based benchmarks were used to explore the adiabatic potential energy surfaces (PESs) of the mixed-valence BF(+) cation along with the optimization of appropriate ground-, excited-, and transition-state geometries. The calculation of Mossbauer isomer shifts and quadrupole splittings, UV-vis excitation energies, and the electronic coupling matrix element, H(ab), corroborate the PES analyses. The adiabatic electron transfer pathway is also analyzed with respect to several possible vibronic coordinates. The degree of the electronic coupling between iron sites, the value of H(ab), and the nature of the electron transfer pathway correlate with the amount of Hartree-Fock exchange involved in the DFT calculation with hybrid (approximately 20% of Hartree-Fock exchange) methods providing the best agreement between theory and experiment. DFT (B3LYP) predicted values of H(ab) (839, 1085, and 1265 cm(-1)) depend on the computational method and are in good agreement with experimental data.

An experimental and theoretical study of the electronic spectra of tetraethylammonium [bis(1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolato)M(III)] and tetraethylammonium [bis(1,3-dithiole-2-one-4,5-dithiolato)M(III)] (M = Sb or Bi)

Metal complexes of dmit and related ligands, such as dmio, have been studied extensively over the last few decades: [dmit](2-) = bis(1,3-dithiole-2-thione-4,5-dithiolato); [dmio](2-) = bis(1,3-dithiole-2-one-4,5-dithiolato). While much effort has been placed on determining structural properties, very few vigorous spectroscopic studies of these metal complexes have been undertaken. The spectroscopic features of the infrared, Raman and UV-vis spectra, previously reported, have largely been used to characterize compounds. In particular, many details of the electronic structure are still to be revealed. We now report a detailed analysis of the UV-vis spectra of the [M(dmit)](-1) and [M(dmio)](-1) anions, where M = Sb(III) or Bi(III). Experimental spectra were deconvoluted and analysed by several theoretical methodologies, including ab initio CI, TD and CISD calculations. The results led to the assignments of several MLCT/LMCT bands, occurring between 390 and 300 nm, and the confirmation of metal orbital contributions to the HOMO-LUMO boundary.
