PINK: a tender X-ray beamline for X-ray emission spectroscopy

A high-flux beamline optimized for non-resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) in the tender X-ray energy range has been constructed at the BESSY II synchrotron source. The beamline utilizes a cryogenically cooled undulator that provides X-rays over the energy range 2.1 keV to 9.5 keV. This energy range provides access to XES [and in the future X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)] studies of transition metals ranging from Ti to Cu (Kα, Kβ lines) and Zr to Ag (Lα, Lβ), as well as light elements including P, S, Cl, K and Ca (Kα, Kβ). The beamline can be operated in two modes. In PINK mode, a multilayer monochromator (E/ΔE ≃ 30-80) provides a high photon flux (1014 photons s-1 at 6 keV and 300 mA ring current), allowing non-resonant XES measurements of dilute substances. This mode is currently available for general user operation. X-ray absorption near-edge structure and resonant XAS techniques will be available after the second stage of the PINK commissioning, when a high monochromatic mode (E/ΔE ≃ 10000-40000) will be facilitated by a double-crystal monochromator. At present, the beamline incorporates two von Hamos spectrometers, enabling time-resolved XES experiments with time scales down to 0.1 s and the possibility of two-color XES experiments. This paper describes the optical scheme of the PINK beamline and the endstation. The design of the two von Hamos dispersive spectrometers and sample environment are discussed here in detail. To illustrate, XES spectra of phosphorus complexes, KCl, TiO2 and Co3O4 measured using the PINK setup are presented.

In Solution Identification of the Lysine-Cysteine Redox Switch with a NOS Bridge in Transaldolase by Sulfur K-Edge X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

A novel covalent post-translational modification (lysine-NOS-cysteine) was discovered in proteins, initially in the enzyme transaldolase of Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NgTAL) [Nature 2021, 593, 460-464], acting as a redox switch. The identification of this novel linkage in solution was unprecedented until now. We present detection of the NOS redox switch in solution using sulfur K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The oxidized NgTAL spectrum shows a distinct shoulder on the low-energy side of the rising edge, corresponding to a dipole-allowed transition from the sulfur 1s core to the unoccupied σ* orbital of the S-O group in the NOS bridge. This feature is absent in the XAS spectrum of reduced NgTAL, where Lys-NOS-Cys is absent. Our experimental and calculated XAS data support the presence of a NOS bridge in solution, thus potentially facilitating future studies on enzyme activity regulation mediated by the NOS redox switches, drug discovery, biocatalytic applications, and protein design.

Correlating Valence and 2p3d RIXS Spectroscopies: A Ligand-Field Study of Spin-Crossover Iron(II)

The molecular spin-crossover phenomenon between high-spin (HS) and low-spin (LS) states is a promising route to next-generation information storage, sensing applications, and molecular spintronics. Spin-crossover complexes also provide a unique opportunity to study the ligand field (LF) properties of a system in both HS and LS states while maintaining the same ligand environment. Presently, we employ complementing valence and core-level spectroscopic methods to probe the electronic excited-state manifolds of the spin-crossover complex [FeII(H2B(pz)2)2phen]0. Light-induced excited spin-state trapping (LIESST) at liquid He temperatures is exploited to characterize magnetic and spectroscopic properties of the photoinduced HS state using SQUID magnetometry and magnetic circular dichroism spectroscopy. In parallel, Fe 2p3d RIXS spectroscopy is employed to examine the ΔS = 0, 1 excited LF states. These experimental studies are combined with state-of-the-art CASSCF/NEVPT2 and CASCI/NEVPT2 calculations characterizing the ground and LF excited states. Analysis of the acquired LF information further supports the notion that the spin-crossover of [FeII(H2B(pz)2)2phen]0 is asymmetric, evidenced by a decrease in eπ in the LS state. The results demonstrate the power of cross-correlating spectroscopic techniques with high and low LF information content to make accurate excited-state assignments, as well as the current capabilities of ab initio theory in interpreting these electronic properties.

X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy of N2S2 Cu(II)/(III) complexes

This study investigates the influence of ligand charge on transition energies in a series of CuN2S2 complexes based on dithiocarbazate Schiff base ligands using Cu K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and Kβ valence-to-core (VtC) X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES). By comparing the formally Cu(II) complexes [CuII(HL1)] (HL12- = dimethyl pentane-2,4-diylidenebis[carbonodithiohydrazonate]) and [CuII(HL2)] (HL22- = dibenzyl pentane-2,4-diylidenebis[carbonodithiohydrazonate]) and the formally Cu(III) complex [CuIII(L2)], distinct changes in transition energies are observed, primarily attributed to the metal oxidation state. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate how an increased negative charge on the deprotonated L23- ligand stabilizes the Cu(III) center through enhanced charge donation, modulating the core transition energies. Overall, significant shifts to higher energies are noted upon metal oxidation, emphasizing the importance of scrutinizing ligand structure in XAS/VtC XES analysis. The data further support the redox-innocent role of the Schiff base ligands and underscore the criticality of ligand protonation levels in future spectroscopic studies, particularly for catalytic intermediates. The combined XAS-VtC XES methodology validates the Cu(III) oxidation state assignment while offering insights into ligand protonation effects on core-level spectroscopic transitions.

Mechanocatalytic Synthesis of Ammonia: State of the Catalyst During Reaction and Deactivation Pathway

Ammonia synthesis holds significant importance for both agricultural fertilizer production and emerging green energy applications. Here, we present a comprehensive characterization of a catalyst for mechanochemical ammonia synthesis, based on Cs-promoted Fe. The study sheds light on the catalyst's dynamic evolution under reaction conditions and the origin of deactivation. Initially, elemental Cs converts to CsH, followed by partial CsOH formation due to trace oxygen impurities on the surface of the Fe metal and the equipment. Concurrently, the mechanical milling process comminutes Fe, exposing fresh metallic Fe surfaces. This comminution correlates with an induction period observed during ammonia formation. Critical to the study, degradation of active Cs promoter species (CsH and CsNH2) into inactive CsOH emerged as the primary deactivation mechanism. By increasing the Cs content from 2.2 mol % to 4.2 mol %, we achieved stable, continuous ammonia synthesis for nearly 90 hours, showcasing one of the longest-running mechanocatalytic gas phase reactions. Studies of the temperature dependence of the reaction revealed negligible bulk temperature influence in the range of -10 °C to 100 °C, highlighting the dominance of mechanical action over bulk thermal effects. This study offers insights into the complex interplay between mechanical processing, reactive species, and deactivation mechanisms in mechanocatalytic ammonia synthesis.

The synthesis and characterization of an iron(VII) nitrido complex

Complexes of iron in high oxidation states are captivating research subjects due to their pivotal role as active intermediates in numerous catalytic processes. Structural and spectroscopic studies of well-defined model complexes often provide evidence of these intermediates. In addition to the fundamental molecular and electronic structure insights gained by these complexes, their reactivity also affects our understanding of catalytic reaction mechanisms for small molecule and bond-activation chemistry. Here, we report the synthesis, structural and spectroscopic characterization of a stable, octahedral Fe(VI) nitrido complex and an authenticated, unique Fe(VII) species, prepared by one-electron oxidation. The super-oxidized Fe(VII) nitride rearranges to an Fe(V) imide through an intramolecular amination mechanism and ligand exchange, which is characterized spectroscopically and computationally. This enables combined reactivity and stability studies on a single molecular system of a rare high-valent complex redox pair. Quantum chemical calculations complement the spectroscopic parameters and provide evidence for a diamagnetic (S = 0) d 2 Fe(VI) and a genuine S = 1/2, d 1 Fe(VII) configuration of these super-oxidized nitrido complexes.

Chemical and Redox Noninnocence of Pentane-2,4-dione Bis(S-methylisothiosemicarbazone) in Cobalt Complexes and Their Application in Wacker-Type Oxidation

Cobalt complexes with multiproton- and multielectron-responsive ligands are of interest for challenging catalytic transformations. The chemical and redox noninnocence of pentane-2,4-dione bis(S-methylisothiosemicarbazone) (PBIT) in a series of cobalt complexes has been studied by a range of methods, including spectroscopy [UV-vis, NMR, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS)], cyclic voltammetry, X-ray diffraction, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Two complexes [CoIII(H2LSMe)I]I and [CoIII(LSMe)I2] were found to act as precatalysts in a Wacker-type oxidation of olefins using phenylsilane, the role of which was elucidated through isotopic labeling. Insights into the mechanism of the catalytic transformation as well as the substrate scope of this selective reaction are described, and the essential role of phenylsilane and the noninnocence of PBIT are disclosed. Among the several relevant species characterized was an unprecedented Co(III) complex with a dianionic diradical PBIT ligand ([CoIII(LSMe••)I]).

Highly Activated Terminal Carbon Monoxide Ligand in an Iron-Sulfur Cluster Model of FeMco with Intermediate Local Spin State at Fe

Nitrogenases, the enzymes that convert N2 to NH3, also catalyze the reductive coupling of CO to yield hydrocarbons. CO-coordinated species of nitrogenase clusters have been isolated and used to infer mechanistic information. However, synthetic FeS clusters displaying CO ligands remain rare, which limits benchmarking. Starting from a synthetic cluster that models a cubane portion of the FeMo cofactor (FeMoco), including a bridging carbyne ligand, we report a heterometallic tungsten-iron-sulfur cluster with a single terminal CO coordination in two oxidation states with a high level of CO activation (νCO = 1851 and 1751 cm-1). The local Fe coordination environment (2S, 1C, 1CO) is identical to that in the protein making this system a suitable benchmark. Computational studies find an unusual intermediate spin electronic configuration at the Fe sites promoted by the presence the carbyne ligand. This electronic feature is partly responsible for the high degree of CO activation in the reduced cluster.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Catalytic Application of Colloidal and Supported Manganese Nanoparticles

Colloidal and supported manganese nanoparticles were synthesized following an organometallic approach and applied in the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) of aldehydes and ketones. Reaction parameters for the preparation of colloidal nanoparticles (NPs) were optimized to yield small (2-2.5 nm) and well-dispersed NPs. Manganese NPs were further immobilized on an imidazolium-based supported ionic phase (SILP) and characterized to evaluate NP size, metal loading, and oxidation states. Oxidation of the Mn NPs by the support was observed resulting in an average formal oxidation state of +2.5. The MnOx @SILP material showed promising performance in the CTH of aldehydes and ketones using 2-propanol as a hydrogen donor, outperforming previously reported Mn NPs-based CTH catalysts in terms of metal loading-normalized turnover numbers. Interestingly, MnOx @SILP were found to lose activity upon air exposure, which correlates with an additional increase in the average oxidation state of Mn as revealed by X-ray absorption spectroscopic studies.

Three-Coordinate Nickel and Metal-Metal Interactions in a Heterometallic Iron-Sulfur Cluster

Biological multielectron reactions often are performed by metalloenzymes with heterometallic sites, such as anaerobic carbon monoxide dehydrogenase (CODH), which has a nickel-iron-sulfide cubane with a possible three-coordinate nickel site. Here, we isolate the first synthetic iron-sulfur clusters having a nickel atom with only three donors, showing that this structural feature is feasible. These have a core with two tetrahedral irons, one octahedral tungsten, and a three-coordinate nickel connected by sulfide and thiolate bridges. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Mössbauer, and superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) data are combined with density functional theory (DFT) computations to show how the electronic structure of the cluster arises from strong magnetic coupling between the Ni, Fe, and W sites. X-ray absorption spectroscopy, together with spectroscopically validated DFT analysis, suggests that the electronic structure can be described with a formal Ni1+ atom participating in a nonpolar Ni-W σ-bond. This metal-metal bond, which minimizes spin density at Ni1+, is conserved in two cluster oxidation states. Fe-W bonding is found in all clusters, in one case stabilizing a local non-Hund state at tungsten. Based on these results, we compare different M-M interactions and speculate that other heterometallic clusters, including metalloenzyme active sites, could likewise store redox equivalents and stabilize low-valent metal centers through metal-metal bonding.

Highly loaded bimetallic iron-cobalt catalysts for hydrogen release from ammonia

Ammonia is a storage molecule for hydrogen, which can be released by catalytic decomposition. Inexpensive iron catalysts suffer from a low activity due to a too strong iron-nitrogen binding energy compared to more active metals such as ruthenium. Here, we show that this limitation can be overcome by combining iron with cobalt resulting in a Fe-Co bimetallic catalyst. Theoretical calculations confirm a lower metal-nitrogen binding energy for the bimetallic catalyst resulting in higher activity. Operando spectroscopy reveals that the role of cobalt in the bimetallic catalyst is to suppress the bulk-nitridation of iron and to stabilize this active state. Such catalysts are obtained from Mg(Fe,Co)2O4 spinel pre-catalysts with variable Fe:Co ratios by facile co-precipitation, calcination and reduction. The resulting Fe-Co/MgO catalysts, characterized by an extraordinary high metal loading reaching 74 wt.%, combine the advantages of a ruthenium-like electronic structure with a bulk catalyst-like microstructure typical for base metal catalysts.

Nature of S-States in the Oxygen-Evolving Complex Resolved by High-Energy Resolution Fluorescence Detected X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy

Photosystem II, the water splitting enzyme of photosynthesis, utilizes the energy of sunlight to drive the four-electron oxidation of water to dioxygen at the oxygen-evolving complex (OEC). The OEC harbors a Mn4CaO5 cluster that cycles through five oxidation states Si (i = 0-4). The S3 state is the last metastable state before the O2 evolution. Its electronic structure and nature of the S2 → S3 transition are key topics of persisting controversy. Most spectroscopic studies suggest that the S3 state consists of four Mn(IV) ions, compared to the Mn(III)Mn(IV)3 of the S2 state. However, recent crystallographic data have received conflicting interpretations, suggesting either metal- or ligand-based oxidation, the latter leading to an oxyl radical or a peroxo moiety in the S3 state. Herein, we utilize high-energy resolution fluorescence detected (HERFD) X-ray absorption spectroscopy to obtain a highly resolved description of the Mn K pre-edge region for all S-states, paying special attention to use chemically unperturbed S3 state samples. In combination with quantum chemical calculations, we achieve assignment of specific spectroscopic features to geometric and electronic structures for all S-states. These data are used to confidently discriminate between the various suggestions concerning the electronic structure and the nature of oxidation events in all observable catalytic intermediates of the OEC. Our results do not support the presence of either peroxo or oxyl in the active configuration of the S3 state. This establishes Mn-centered storage of oxidative equivalents in all observable catalytic transitions and constrains the onset of the O-O bond formation until after the final light-driven oxidation event.

Adaptive Catalysts for the Selective Hydrogenation of Bicyclic Heteroaromatics using Ruthenium Nanoparticles on a CO2 -Responsive Support

Ruthenium nanoparticles (NPs) immobilized on an amine-functionalized polymer-grafted silica support act as adaptive catalysts for the hydrogenation of bicyclic heteroaromatics. Whereas full hydrogenation of benzofuran and quinoline derivatives is achieved under pure H2 , introducing CO2 into the H2 gas phase leads to an effective shutdown of the arene hydrogenation while preserving the activity for the hydrogenation of the heteroaromatic part. The selectivity switch originates from the generation of ammonium formate species on the surface of the materials by catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 . The CO2 hydrogenation is fully reversible, resulting in a robust and rapid switch between the two states of the catalyst adapting its performance in response to the feed gas composition. A variety of benzofuran and quinoline derivatives were hydrogenated to fully or partially saturated products in high selectivity and yields simply by altering the composition of the feed gas from H2 to H2 /CO2 . The adaptive catalytic system thus provides controlled access to valuable products using a single catalyst rather than two specific and distinct catalysts with static reactivity.

Mössbauer and Nuclear Resonance Vibrational Spectroscopy Studies of Iron Species Involved in N-N Bond Cleavage

Diketiminate-supported iron complexes are capable of cleaving the strong triple bond of N2 to give a tetra-iron complex with two nitrides (Rodriguez et al., Science, 2011, 334, 780-783). The mechanism of this reaction has been difficult to determine, but a transient green species was observed during the reaction that corresponds to a potential intermediate. Here, we describe studies aiming to identify the characteristics of this intermediate, using a range of spectroscopic techniques, including Mössbauer spectroscopy, electronic absorption spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopy (NRVS) complemented by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We successfully elucidated the nature of the starting iron(II) species and the bis(nitride) species in THF solution, and in each case, THF breaks up the multiiron species. Various observations on the green intermediate species indicate that it has one N2 per two Fe atoms, has THF associated with it, and has NRVS features indicative of bridging N2. Computational models with a formally diiron(0)-N2 core are most consistent with the accumulated data, and on this basis, a mechanism for N2 splitting is suggested. This work shows the power of combining NRVS, Mössbauer, NMR, and vibrational spectroscopies with computations for revealing the nature of transient iron species during N2 cleavage.

Mapping the Ultrafast Mechanistic Pathways of Co Photocatalysts in Pure Water through Time-Resolved X-ray Spectroscopy

Nanosecond time-resolved X-ray (tr-XAS) and optical transient absorption spectroscopy (OTA) are applied to study 3 multimolecular photocatalytic systems with [Ru(bpy)3 ]2+ photoabsorber, ascorbic acid electron donor and Co catalysts with methylene (1), hydroxomethylene (2) and methyl (3) amine substituents in pure water. OTA and tr-XAS of 1 and 2 show that the favored catalytic pathway involves reductive quenching of the excited photosensitizer and electron transfer to the catalyst to form a CoII square pyramidal intermediate with a bonded aqua molecule followed by a CoI square planar derivative that decays within ≈8 μs. By contrast, a CoI square pyramidal intermediate with a longer decay lifetime of ≈35 μs is formed from an analogous CoII geometry for 3 in H2 O. These results highlight the protonation of CoI to form the elusive hydride species to be the rate limiting step and show that the catalytic rate can be enhanced through hydrogen containing pendant amines that act as H-H bond formation proton relays.

Reactive high-spin iron(IV)-oxo sites through dioxygen activation in a metal-organic framework

In nature, nonheme iron enzymes use dioxygen to generate high-spin iron(IV)=O species for a variety of oxygenation reactions. Although synthetic chemists have long sought to mimic this reactivity, the enzyme-like activation of O2 to form high-spin iron(IV) = O species remains an unrealized goal. Here, we report a metal-organic framework featuring iron(II) sites with a local structure similar to that in α-ketoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases. The framework reacts with O2 at low temperatures to form high-spin iron(IV) = O species that are characterized using in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform, in situ and variable-field Mössbauer, Fe Kβ x-ray emission, and nuclear resonance vibrational spectroscopies. In the presence of O2, the framework is competent for catalytic oxygenation of cyclohexane and the stoichiometric conversion of ethane to ethanol.

Conformational coupling of redox-driven Na+-translocation in Vibrio cholerae NADH:quinone oxidoreductase

In the respiratory chain, NADH oxidation is coupled to ion translocation across the membrane to build up an electrochemical gradient. In the human pathogen Vibrio cholerae, the sodium-pumping NADH:quinone oxidoreductase (Na+-NQR) generates a sodium gradient by a so far unknown mechanism. Here we show that ion pumping in Na+-NQR is driven by large conformational changes coupling electron transfer to ion translocation. We have determined a series of cryo-EM and X-ray structures of the Na+-NQR that represent snapshots of the catalytic cycle. The six subunits NqrA, B, C, D, E, and F of Na+-NQR harbor a unique set of cofactors that shuttle the electrons from NADH twice across the membrane to quinone. The redox state of a unique intramembranous [2Fe-2S] cluster orchestrates the movements of subunit NqrC, which acts as an electron transfer switch. We propose that this switching movement controls the release of Na+ from a binding site localized in subunit NqrB.

Operando studies of Mn oxide based electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction

Inspired by photosystem II (PS II), Mn oxide based electrocatalysts have been repeatedly investigated as catalysts for the electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the anodic reaction in water electrolysis. However, a comparison of the conditions in biological OER catalysed by the water splitting complex CaMn4Ox with the requirements for an electrocatalyst for industrially relevant applications reveals fundamental differences. Thus, a systematic development of artificial Mn-based OER catalysts requires both a fundamental understanding of the catalytic mechanisms as well as an evaluation of the practicality of the system for industrial scale applications. Experimentally, both aspects can be approached using in situ and operando methods including spectroscopy. This paper highlights some of the major challenges common to different operando investigation methods and recent insights gained with them. To this end, vibrational spectroscopy, especially Raman spectroscopy, absorption techniques in the bandgap region and operando X-ray spectroelectrochemistry (SEC), both in the hard and soft X-ray regime are particularly focused on here. Technical challenges specific to each method are discussed first, followed by challenges that are specific to Mn oxide based systems. Finally, recent in situ and operando studies are reviewed. This analysis shows that despite the technical and Mn specific challenges, three specific key features are common to most of the studied systems with significant OER activity: structural disorder, Mn oxidation states between III and IV, and the appearance of layered birnessite phases in the active regime.

A Simple and Versatile Approach for the Low-Temperature Synthesis of Transition Metal Phosphide Nanoparticles from Metal Chloride Complexes and P(SiMe3 )3

Metal chloride complexes react with tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine under mild condition to produce metal phosphide (TMP) nanoparticles (NPs), and chlorotrimethylsilane as a byproduct. The formation of Si-Cl bonds that are stronger than the starting M-Cl bonds acts as a driving force for the reaction. The potential of this strategy is illustrated through the preparation of ruthenium phosphide NPs using [RuCl2 (cymene)] and tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine at 35 °C. Characterization with a combination of techniques including electron microscopy (EM), X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), and solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, evidences the formation of small (diameter of 1.3 nm) and amorphous NPs with an overall Ru50 P50 composition. Interestingly, these NPs can be easily immobilized on functional support materials, which is of great interest for potential applications in catalysis and electrocatalysis. Mo50 P50 and Co50 P50 NPs can also be synthesized following the same strategy. This approach is simple and versatile and paves the way toward the preparation of a wide range of transition metal phosphide nanoparticles under mild reaction conditions.

Well-Defined Iron Sites in Crystalline Carbon Nitride

Carbon nitride materials can be hosts for transition metal sites, but Mössbauer studies on iron complexes in carbon nitrides have always shown a mixture of environments and oxidation states. Here we describe the synthesis and characterization of a crystalline carbon nitride with stoichiometric iron sites that all have the same environment. The material (formula C6N9H2Fe0.4Li1.2Cl, abbreviated PTI/FeCl2) is derived from reacting poly(triazine imide)·LiCl (PTI/LiCl) with a low-melting FeCl2/KCl flux, followed by anaerobic rinsing with methanol. X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption and Mössbauer spectroscopies, and SQUID magnetometry indicate that there are tetrahedral high-spin iron(II) sites throughout the material, all having the same geometry. The material is active for electrocatalytic nitrate reduction to ammonia, with a production rate of ca. 0.1 mmol cm-2 h-1 and Faradaic efficiency of ca. 80% at -0.80 V vs RHE.

A Conserved Second Sphere Residue Tunes Copper Site Reactivity in Lytic Polysaccharide Monooxygenases

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) are powerful monocopper enzymes that can activate strong C-H bonds through a mechanism that remains largely unknown. Herein, we investigated the role of a conserved glutamine/glutamate in the second coordination sphere. Mutation of the Gln in NcAA9C to Glu, Asp, or Asn showed that the nature and distance of the headgroup to the copper fine-tune LPMO functionality and copper reactivity. The presence of Glu or Asp close to the copper lowered the reduction potential and decreased the ratio between the reduction and reoxidation rates by up to 500-fold. All mutants showed increased enzyme inactivation, likely due to changes in the confinement of radical intermediates, and displayed changes in a protective hole-hopping pathway. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and X-ray absorption spectroscopic (XAS) studies gave virtually identical results for all NcAA9C variants, showing that the mutations do not directly perturb the Cu(II) ligand field. DFT calculations indicated that the higher experimental reoxidation rate observed for the Glu mutant could be reconciled if this residue is protonated. Further, for the glutamic acid form, we identified a Cu(III)-hydroxide species formed in a single step on the H2O2 splitting path. This is in contrast to the Cu(II)-hydroxide and hydroxyl intermediates, which are predicted for the WT and the unprotonated glutamate variant. These results show that this second sphere residue is a crucial determinant of the catalytic functioning of the copper-binding histidine brace and provide insights that may help in understanding LPMOs and LPMO-inspired synthetic catalysts.

Convolutional neural network framework for the automated analysis of transition metal X-ray photoelectron spectra

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is an indispensable technique for the quantitative determination of sample composition and electronic structure in diverse research fields. Quantitative analysis of the phases present in XP spectra is usually conducted manually by means of empirical peak fitting performed by trained spectroscopists. However, with recent advancements in the usability and reliability of XPS instruments, ever more (inexperienced) users are creating increasingly large data sets that are harder to analyze by hand. In order to aid users with the analysis of large XPS data sets, more automated, easy-to-use analysis techniques are needed. Here, we propose a supervised machine learning framework based on artificial convolutional neural networks. By training such networks on large numbers of artificially created XP spectra with known quantifications (i.e., for each spectrum, the concentration of each chemical species is known), we created universally applicable models for auto-quantification of transition-metal XPS data that are able to predict the sample composition from spectra within seconds. Upon evaluation against more traditional peak fitting methods, we showed that these neural networks achieve competitive quantification accuracy. The proposed framework is shown to be flexible enough to accommodate spectra containing multiple chemical elements and measured with different experimental parameters. The use of dropout variational inference for the determination of quantification uncertainty is illustrated.

Cu4S Cluster in "0-Hole" and "1-Hole" States: Geometric and Electronic Structure Variations for the Active CuZ* Site of N2O Reductase

The active site of nitrous oxide reductase (N2OR), a key enzyme in denitrification, features a unique μ4-sulfido-bridged tetranuclear Cu cluster (the so-called CuZ or CuZ* site). Details of the catalytic mechanism have remained under debate and, to date, synthetic model complexes of the CuZ*/CuZ sites are extremely rare due to the difficulty in building the unique {Cu4(μ4-S)} core structure. Herein, we report the synthesis and characterization of [Cu4(μ4-S)]n+ (n = 2, 2; n = 3, 3) clusters, supported by a macrocyclic {py2NHC4} ligand (py = pyridine, NHC = N-heterocyclic carbene), in both their 0-hole (2) and 1-hole (3) states, thus mimicking the two active states of the CuZ* site during enzymatic N2O reduction. Structural and electronic properties of these {Cu4(μ4-S)} clusters are elucidated by employing multiple methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), UV/vis, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Cu/S K-edge X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES), and Cu K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in combination with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. A significant geometry change of the {Cu4(μ4-S)} core occurs upon oxidation from 2 (τ4(S) = 0.46, seesaw) to 3 (τ4(S) = 0.03, square planar), which has not been observed so far for the biological CuZ(*) site and is unprecedented for known model complexes. The single electron of the 1-hole species 3 is predominantly delocalized over two opposite Cu ions via the central S atom, mediated by a π/π superexchange pathway. Cu K-edge XAS and Cu/S K-edge XES corroborate a mixed Cu/S-based oxidation event in which the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) has a significant S-character. Furthermore, preliminary reactivity studies evidence a nucleophilic character of the central μ4-S in the fully reduced 0-hole state.

Synthesis and Reactivity of a Cobalt-Supported Singlet Nitrene

The synthesis, characterization, and reactivity of a series of cobalt terminal imido complexes supported by an N-anchored tripodal tris(carbene) chelate is described, including a Co-supported singlet nitrene. Reaction of the Co^I precursor [(TIMMN^mes)Co^I](PF₆) (TIMMN^mes = tris-[2-(3-mesityl-imidazolin-2-ylidene)-methyl]amine) with p-methoxyphenyl azide yields a Co^III imide [(TIMMN^mes)Co^III(NAnisole)](PF₆) (1). Treatment of 1 with 1 equiv of [FeCp₂](PF₆) at -35 °C affords a formal Co^IV imido complex [(TIMMN^mes)Co(NAnisole)](PF₆)₂ (2), which features a bent Co-N(imido)-C(Anisole) linkage. Subsequent one-electron oxidation of 2 with 1 equiv of AgPF₆ provides access to the tricationic cobalt imido complex [(TIMMN^mes)Co(NAnisole)](PF₆)₃ (3). All complexes were fully characterized, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analyses, infrared (IR) vibrational, ultraviolet/visible (UV/vis) electronic absorption, multinuclear NMR, X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), and high-energy-resolution fluorescence-detected X-ray absorption spectroscopy (HERFD XAS). Quantum chemical calculations provide additional insight into the electronic structures of all compounds. The dicationic Co^IV imido complex 2 exhibits a doublet ground state with considerable imidyl character as a result of covalent Co-NAnisole bonding. At room temperature, 2 readily converts to a Co^II amine complex involving intramolecular C-H bond amination. Electronically, tricationic complex 3 can be understood as a singlet nitrene bound to Co^III with significant Co^IV imidyl radical character. Verifying the pronounced electrophilicity, nucleophiles such as H₂O and ^tBuNH₂ add to 3─analogous to the parent free nitrene─in the para position of the aromatic substituent, thus, clearly corroborating singlet nitrene-type reactivity.

Synthesis and isolation of a triplet bismuthinidene with a quenched magnetic response

Large Spin-Orbit Coupling (SOC) is an intrinsic property of the heavy-elements that directly affects the electronic structures of the compounds. Herein we report the synthesis and characterization of a mono-coordinate bismuthinidene featuring a rigid and bulky ligand. All magnetic measurements (SQUID, NMR) point to a diamagnetic compound. However, multiconfigurational quantum chemical calculations predict the ground state of the compound to be dominated (76%) by a spin-triplet. The apparent diamagnetism is explained by an extremely large SOC induced positive zero-field-splitting of more than 4500 cm^-1 that leaves the M_S = 0 magnetic sublevel thermally isolated in the electronic ground state.

Catalytic Hydrogenation of CO2 to Formate Using Ruthenium Nanoparticles Immobilized on Supported Ionic Liquid Phases

Ruthenium nanoparticles (NPs) immobilized on imidazolium-based supported ionic liquid phases (Ru@SILP) act as effective heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrogenation of carbon dioxide (CO₂ ) to formate in a mixture of water and triethylamine (NEt₃ ). The structure of the imidazolium-based molecular modifiers is varied systematically regarding side chain functionality (neutral, basic, and acidic) and anion to assess the influence of the IL-type environment on the NPs synthesis and catalytic properties. The resulting Ru@SILP materials contain well-dispersed Ru NPs with diameters in the range 0.8-2.9 nm that are found 2 to 10 times more active for CO₂ hydrogenation than a reference Ru@SiO₂ catalyst under identical conditions. Introduction of sulfonic acid groups in the IL modifiers results in a greatly increased turnover number (TON) and turnover frequency (TOF) at reduced metal loadings. As a result, excellent productivity with TONs up to 16 100 at an initial TOF of 1430 h^-1 can be achieved with the Ru@SILP(SO₃ H-OAc) catalyst. H/D exchange and other control experiments suggest an accelerated desorption of the formate species from the Ru NPs promoted by the presence of ammonium sulfonate species on Ru@SILP(SO₃ H-X) materials, resulting in enhanced catalyst activity and productivity.

Binding of exogenous cyanide reveals new active-site states in [FeFe] hydrogenases

[FeFe] hydrogenases are highly efficient metalloenyzmes for hydrogen conversion. Their active site cofactor (the H-cluster) is composed of a canonical [4Fe-4S] cluster ([4Fe-4S]_H) linked to a unique organometallic di-iron subcluster ([2Fe]_H). In [2Fe]_H the two Fe ions are coordinated by a bridging 2-azapropane-1,3-dithiolate (ADT) ligand, three CO and two CN^- ligands, leaving an open coordination site on one Fe where substrates (H₂ and H⁺) as well as inhibitors (e.g. O₂, CO, H₂S) may bind. Here, we investigate two new active site states that accumulate in [FeFe] hydrogenase variants where the cysteine (Cys) in the proton transfer pathway is mutated to alanine (Ala). Our experimental data, including atomic resolution crystal structures and supported by calculations, suggest that in these two states a third CN^- ligand is bound to the apical position of [2Fe]_H. These states can be generated both by "cannibalization" of CN^- from damaged [2Fe]_H subclusters as well as by addition of exogenous CN^-. This is the first detailed spectroscopic and computational characterisation of the interaction of exogenous CN^- with [FeFe] hydrogenases. Similar CN^--bound states can also be generated in wild-type hydrogenases, but do not form as readily as with the Cys to Ala variants. These results highlight how the interaction between the first amino acid in the proton transfer pathway and the active site tunes ligand binding to the open coordination site and affects the electronic structure of the H-cluster.

Bimolecular Reductive Elimination of Ethane from Pyridine(diimine) Iron Methyl Complexes: Mechanism, Electronic Structure, and Entry into [2+2] Cycloaddition Catalysis

The application of bimolecular reductive elimination to the activation of iron catalysts for alkene-diene cycloaddition is described. Key to this approach was the synthesis, characterization, electronic structure determination, and ultimately solution stability of a family of pyridine(diimine) iron methyl complexes with diverse steric properties and electronic ground states. Both the aryl-substituted, (^MePDI)FeCH₃ and (^EtPDI)FeCH₃ (^RPDI = 2,6-(2,6-R₂-C₆H₃N═CMe)₂C₅H₃N), and the alkyl-substituted examples, (^CyAPDI)FeCH₃ (^CyAPDI = 2,6-(C₆H₁₁N═CMe)₂C₅H₃N), have molecular structures significantly distorted from planarity and S = 3/2 ground states. The related N-arylated derivative bearing 2,6-di-isopropyl aryl substituents, (^iPrPDI)FeCH₃, has an idealized planar geometry and exhibits spin crossover behavior from S = 1/2 to S = 3/2 states. At 23 °C under an N₂ atmosphere, both (^MePDI)FeCH₃ and (^EtPDI)FeCH₃ underwent reductive elimination of ethane to form the iron dinitrogen precatalysts, [(^MePDI)Fe(N₂)]₂(μ-N₂) and [(^EtPDI)Fe(N₂)]₂(μ-N₂), respectively, while (^iPrPDI)FeCH₃ proved inert to C-C bond formation. By contrast, addition of butadiene to all three iron methyl complexes induced ethane formation and generated the corresponding iron butadiene complexes, (^RPDI)Fe(η⁴-C₄H₆) (R = Me, Et, ⁱPr), known precatalysts for the [2+2] cycloaddition of olefins and dienes. Kinetic, crossover experiments, and structural studies were combined with magnetic measurements and Mössbauer spectroscopy to elucidate the electronic and steric features of the iron complexes that enable this unusual reductive elimination and precatalyst activation pathway. Transmetalation of methyl groups between iron centers was fast at ambient temperature and independent of steric environment or spin state, while the intermediate dimer underwent the sterically controlled rate-determining reaction with either N₂ or butadiene to access a catalytically active iron compound.

Sulfur-Ligated [2Fe-2C] Clusters as Synthetic Model Systems for Nitrogenase

Metal clusters featuring carbon and sulfur donors have coordination environments comparable to the active site of nitrogenase enzymes. Here, we report a series of di-iron clusters supported by the dianionic yldiide ligands, in which the Fe sites are bridged by two μ2-C atoms and four pendant S donors.The [L2Fe2] (L = {[Ph2P(S)]2C}2-) cluster is isolable in two oxidation levels, all-ferrous Fe2II and mixed-valence FeIIFeIII. The mixed-valence cluster displays two peaks in the Mössbauer spectra, indicating slow electron transfer between the two sites. The addition of the Lewis base 4-dimethylaminopyridine to the Fe2II cluster results in coordination with only one of the two Fe sites, even in the presence of an excess base. Conversely, the cluster reacts with 8 equiv of isocyanide tBuNC to give a monometallic complex featuring a new C-C bond between the ligand backbone and the isocyanide. The electronic structure descriptions of these complexes are further supported by X-ray absorption and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopies.

From Divalent to Pentavalent Iron Imido Complexes and an Fe(V) Nitride via N-C Bond Cleavage

As key intermediates in metal-catalyzed nitrogen-transfer chemistry, terminal imido complexes of iron have attracted significant attention for a long time. In search of versatile model compounds, the recently developed second-generation N-anchored tris-NHC chelating ligand tris-[2-(3-mesityl-imidazole-2-ylidene)-methyl]amine (TIMMN^Mes) was utilized to synthesize and compare two series of mid- to high-valent iron alkyl imido complexes, including a reactive Fe(V) adamantyl imido intermediate en route to an isolable Fe(V) nitrido complex. The chemistry toward the iron adamantyl imides was achieved by reacting the Fe(I) precursor [(TIMMN^Mes)Fe^I(N₂)]⁺ (1) with 1-adamantyl azide to yield the corresponding trivalent iron imide. Stepwise chemical reduction and oxidation lead to the isostructural series of low-spin [(TIMMN^Mes)Fe(NAd)]^0,1+,2+,3+ (2^Ad-5^Ad) in oxidation states II to V. The Fe(V) imide [(TIMMN^Mes)Fe(NAd)]³⁺ (5^Ad) is unstable under ambient conditions and converts to the air-stable nitride [(TIMMN^Mes)Fe^V(N)]²⁺ (6) via N-C bond cleavage. The stability of the pentavalent imide can be increased by derivatizing the nitride [(TIMMN^Mes)Fe^IV(N)]⁺ (7) with an ethyl group using the triethyloxonium salt Et₃OPF₆. This gives access to the analogous series of ethyl imides [(TIMMN^Mes)Fe(NEt)]^0,1+,2+,3+ (2^Et-5^Et), including the stable Fe(V) ethyl imide. Iron imido complexes exist in a manifold of different electronic structures, ultimately controlling their diverse reactivities. Accordingly, these complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, SQUID magnetization, and electrochemical methods, as well as ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer, IR vibrational, UV/vis electronic absorption, multinuclear NMR, X-band EPR, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Our studies are complemented with quantum chemical calculations, thus providing further insight into the electronic structures of all complexes.

Advancing Critical Chemical Processes for a Sustainable Future: Challenges for Industry and the Max Planck–Cardiff Centre on the Fundamentals of Heterogeneous Catalysis (FUNCAT)

Catalysis is involved in around 85 % of manufacturing industry and contributes an estimated 25 % to the global domestic product, with the majority of the processes relying on heterogeneous catalysis. Despite the importance in different global segments, the fundamental understanding of heterogeneously catalysed processes lags substantially behind that achieved in other fields. The newly established Max Planck-Cardiff Centre on the Fundamentals of Heterogeneous Catalysis (FUNCAT) targets innovative concepts that could contribute to the scientific developments needed in the research field to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the chemical industries. This Viewpoint Article presents some of our research activities and visions on the current and future challenges of heterogeneous catalysis regarding green industry and the circular economy by focusing explicitly on critical processes. Namely, hydrogen production, ammonia synthesis, and carbon dioxide reduction, along with new aspects of acetylene chemistry.

Spectroscopic and QM/MM studies of the Cu(I) binding site of the plant ethylene receptor ETR1

Herein, we present, to our knowledge, the first spectroscopic characterization of the Cu(I) active site of the plant ethylene receptor ETR1. The x-ray absorption (XAS) and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopies presented here establish that ETR1 has a low-coordinate Cu(I) site. The EXAFS resolves a mixed first coordination sphere of N/O and S scatterers at distances consistent with potential histidine and cysteine residues. This finding agrees with the coordination of residues C65 and H69 to the Cu(I) site, which are critical for ethylene activity and well conserved. Furthermore, the Cu K-edge XAS and EXAFS of ETR1 exhibit spectroscopic changes upon addition of ethylene that are attributed to modifications in the Cu(I) coordination environment, suggestive of ethylene binding. Results from umbrella sampling simulations of the proposed ethylene binding helix of ETR1 at a mixed quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics level agree with the EXAFS fit distance changes upon ethylene binding, particularly in the increase of the distance between H69 and Cu(I), and yield binding energetics comparable with experimental dissociation constants. The observed changes in the copper coordination environment might be the triggering signal for the transmission of the ethylene response.

Surface Boron Modulation on Cobalt Oxide Nanocrystals for Electrochemical Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Herein, we show that coupling boron with cobalt oxide tunes its structure and significantly boost its electrocatalytic performance for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Through a simple precipitation and thermal treatment process, a series of Co-B oxides with tunable morphologies and textural parameters were prepared. Detailed structural analysis supported first the formation of an disordered and partially amorphous material with nanosized Co₃ BO₅ and/or Co₂ B₂ O₆ being present on the local atomic scale. The boron modulation resulted in a superior OER reactivity by delivering a large current and an overpotential of 338 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte. Identical location transmission electron microscopy and in situ electrochemical Raman spectroscopy studies revealed alteration and surface re-construction of materials, and formation of CoO₂ and (oxy)hydroxide intermediate, which were found to be highly dependent on crystallinity of the samples.

An Fe6 C Core in All Nitrogenase Cofactors

The biological process of dinitrogen reduction to ammonium occurs at the cofactors of nitrogenases, the only enzymes that catalyze this challenging chemical reaction. Three types of nitrogenases have been described, named according to the heterometal in their cofactor: molybdenum, vanadium or iron nitrogenases. Spectroscopic and structural characterization allowed the unambiguous identification of the cofactors of molybdenum and vanadium nitrogenases and revealed a central μ₆ -carbide in both of them. Although genetic studies suggested that the cofactor of the iron nitrogenase contains a similar Fe₆ C core, this has not been experimentally demonstrated. Here we report Valence-to-Core X-ray Emission Spectroscopy providing experimental evidence that this cofactor contains a carbide, thereby making the Fe₆ C core a feature of all nitrogenase cofactors.

Umpolung in a Pair of Cobalt(III) Terminal Imido/Imidyl Complexes

Reaction of the Co^I complex [(TIMMN^mes)Co^I](PF₆) (1) (TIMMN^mes=tris‐[2‐(3‐mesityl‐imidazolin‐2‐ylidene)‐methyl]amine) with mesityl azide yields the Co^III imide [(TIMMN^mes)Co^III(NMes)](PF₆) (2). Oxidation of 2 with [FeCp₂](PF₆) provides access to a rare Co^III imidyl [(TIMMN^mes)Co(NMes)](PF₆)₂ (3). Single‐crystal X‐ray diffractometry and EPR spectroscopy confirm the molecular structure of 3 and its S=1/2 ground state. ENDOR, X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and computational analyses indicate a ligand‐based oxidation; thus, an imidyl‐radical electronic structure for 3. Migratory insertion of one ancillary NHC to the imido ligand in 2 gives the Co^IN‐heterocyclic imine (4) within 12 h. Conversely, it takes merely 0.5 h for 3 to transform to the Co^II congener (5). The migratory insertion in 2 occurs via a nucleophilic attack of the imido ligand at the NHC to give 4, whereas in 3, a nucleophilic attack of the NHC at the electrophilic imidyl ligand yields 5. The reactivity shunt upon oxidation of 2 to 3 confirms an umpolung of the imido ligand.

Determination of the iron(IV) local spin states of the Q intermediate of soluble methane monooxygenase by Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy

Soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO) facilitates the conversion of methane to methanol at a non-heme Fe^IV₂ intermediate MMOH_Q, which is formed in the active site of the sMMO hydroxylase component (MMOH) during the catalytic cycle. Other biological systems also employ high-valent Fe^IV sites in catalysis; however, MMOH_Q is unique as Nature’s only identified Fe^IV₂ intermediate. Previous ⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer spectroscopic studies have shown that MMOH_Q employs antiferromagnetic coupling of the two Fe^IV sites to yield a diamagnetic cluster. Unfortunately, this lack of net spin prevents the determination of the local spin state (S_loc) of each of the irons by most spectroscopic techniques. Here, we use Fe Kβ X-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) to characterize the local spin states of the key intermediates of the sMMO catalytic cycle, including MMOH_Q trapped by rapid-freeze-quench techniques. A pure XES spectrum of MMOH_Q is obtained by subtraction of the contributions from other reaction cycle intermediates with the aid of Mössbauer quantification. Comparisons of the MMOH_Q spectrum with those of known S_loc = 1 and S_loc = 2 Fe^IV sites in chemical and biological models reveal that MMOH_Q possesses S_loc = 2 iron sites. This experimental determination of the local spin state will help guide future computational and mechanistic studies of sMMO catalysis.

Access to a Labile Monomeric Magnesium Radical by Ball-Milling

In order to isolate a monometallic Mg radical, the precursor (Am)MgI⋅(CAAC) (1) was prepared (Am=tBuC(N‐DIPP)₂, DIPP=2,6‐diisopropylphenyl, CAAC=cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene). Reduction of a solution of 1 in toluene with the reducing agent K/KI led to formation of a deep purple complex that rapidly decomposed. Ball‐milling of 1 with K/KI gave the low‐valent Mg^I complex (Am)Mg⋅(CAAC) (2) which after rapid extraction with pentane and crystallization was isolated in 15 % yield. Although a benzene solution of 2 decomposes rapidly to give Mg(Am)₂ (3) and unidentified products, the radical is stable in the solid state. Its crystal structure shows planar trigonal coordination at Mg. The extremely short Mg−C distance of 2.056(2) Å indicates strong Mg−CAAC bonding. Calculations and EPR measurements show that most of the spin density is in a π* orbital located at the C−N bond in CAAC, leading to significant C−N bond elongation. This is supported by calculated NPA charges in 2: Mg +1.73, CAAC −0.82. Similar metal‐to‐CAAC charge transfer was calculated for M⁰(CAAC)₂ and [M^I(CAAC)₂⁺] (M=Be, Mg, Ca) complexes in which the metal charges range from +1.50 to +1.70. Although the spin density of the radical is mainly located at the CAAC ligand, complex 2 reacts as a low‐valent Mg^I complex: reaction with a I₂ solution in toluene gave (Am)MgI⋅(CAAC) (1) as the major product.

Enzymatic X-ray absorption spectroelectrochemistry

The ability to observe the changes that occur at an enzyme active site during electrocatalysis can provide very valuable information for understanding the mechanism and ultimately aid in catalyst design. Herein, we discuss the development of X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in combination with electrochemistry for operando studies of enzymatic systems. XAS has had a long history of enabling geometric and electronic structural insights into the catalytic active sites of enzymes, however, XAS combined with electrochemistry (XA-SEC) has been exceedingly rare in bioinorganic applications. Herein, we discuss the challenges and opportunities of applying operando XAS to enzymatic electrocatalysts. The challenges due to the low concentration of the photoabsorber and the instability of the protein in the X-ray beam are discussed. Methods for immobilizing enzymes on the electrodes, while maintaining full redox control are highlighted. A case study of combined XAS and electrochemistry applied to a [NiFe] hydrogenase is presented. By entrapping the [NiFe] hydrogenase in a redox polymer, relatively high protein concentrations can be achieved on the electrode surface, while maintaining redox control. Overall, it is demonstrated that the experiments are feasible, but require precise redox control over the majority of the absorber atoms and careful controls to discriminate between electrochemically-driven changes and beam damage.
