Ligand Effects on the Oxidative Addition of Halogens to (dpp-nacnacR)Rh(phdi)

Ligand Noninnocence in β-Diketiminate and β-Diketimine Copper Complexes

Metal-ligand cooperative systems have a long precedent in catalysis, with the classification depending on the site of substrate bond cleavage and formation and on redox state changes. Recently, our group reported the participation of a β-diketiminate ligand in chemical bonding to heterocumulenes such as CO2 and CS2 by tricopper complexes, leading to cooperative catalysis. Herein, we report the reactivity of these copper clusters, [Cu3EL]- (E = S, Se; L = tris(β-diketiminate) cyclophane ligand), toward other electrophiles, viz. alkyl halides and Brønsted acids. We identified a family of ligand-functionalized complexes, Cu3EL (R) (R = primary alkyls), and a series of disubstituted products, Cu3EL (R)2, through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, mass spectrometry, and infrared and UV-visible spectroscopy. As part of mechanistic studies on these alkylation reactions, we evaluated the acid-base reactivity of these complexes and the influence of the backbone substitution on the reduction potential. Implications of these findings for ligand noninnocence and the relevance of the metal core as a cofactor for the ligand's reactivity are discussed.

Interplay between β-Diimino and β-Diketiminato Ligands in Nickel Complexes Active in the Proton Reduction Reaction

Two Ni complexes are reported with κ⁴-P₂N₂ β-diimino (BDI) ligands with the general formula [Ni(XBDI)](BF₄)₂, where BDI is N-(2-(diphenylphosphaneyl)ethyl)-4-((2-(diphenylphosphaneyl)ethyl)imino)pent-2-en-2-amine and X indicates the substituent in the α-carbon intradiimine position, X = H for 1(BF₄)₂ and X = Ph for 2(BF₄)₂. Electrochemical analysis together with UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy in acetonitrile and dimethylformamide (DMF) indicates the conversion of the β-diimino complexes 1²⁺ and 2²⁺ to the negatively charged β-diketiminato (BDK) analogues (1-H)⁺ and (2-H)⁺ via deprotonation in DMF. Moreover, further electrochemical and spectroscopy evidence indicates that the one-electron-reduced derivatives 1⁺ and 2⁺ can also rapidly evolve to the BDK (1-H)⁺ and (2-H)⁺, respectively, via hydrogen gas evolution through a bimolecular homolytic pathway. Finally, both complexes are demonstrated to be active for the proton reduction reaction in DMF at E_app = -1.8 V vs Fc^+/0, being the active species the one-electron-reduced derivative 1-H and 2-H.

Attempted reduction of a carbazolyl-diiodoalane

We report details of our attempts to reduce the bulky carbazolyl diiodoalane [R-AlI₂]. The reducing agents employed include KC₈, Cp*₂Co and the Mg(I) compound [(^MesBDI)Mg]₂. The use of KC₈ allowed the spectroscopic observation of the alanediyl [R-Al]. With Cp*₂Co as the reducing agent, the alanediyl [R-Al] was obtained as a crystalline material in low yield, but paramagnetic impurities remained. When diiodoalane [R-AlI₂] was treated with [(^MesBDI)Mg]₂, no reduction but a 2 : 1 addition was observed.

Noncovalent Axial I⋅⋅⋅Pt⋅⋅⋅I Interactions in Platinum(II) Complexes Strengthen in the Excited State

Coordination compounds of platinum(II) participate in various noncovalent axial interactions involving metal center. Weakly bound axial ligands can be electrophilic or nucleophilic; however, interactions with nucleophiles are compromised by electron density clashing. Consequently, simultaneous axial interaction of platinum(II) with two nucleophilic ligands is almost unprecedented. Herein, we report structural and computational study of a platinum(II) complex possessing such intramolecular noncovalent I⋅⋅⋅Pt⋅⋅⋅I interactions. Structural analysis indicates that the two iodine atoms approach the platinum(II) center in a "side-on" fashion and act as nucleophilic ligands. According to computational studies, the interactions are dispersive, weak and anti-cooperative in the ground electronic state, but strengthen substantially and become partially covalent and cooperative in the lowest excited state. Strengthening of I⋅⋅⋅Pt⋅⋅⋅I contacts in the excited state is also predicted for the sole previously reported complex with analogous axial interactions.

Metal Centers as Nucleophiles: Oxymoron of Halogen Bond-Involving Crystal Engineering

This review highlights recent studies discovering unconventional halogen bonding (HaB) that involves positively charged metal centers. These centers provide their filled d‐orbitals for HaB, and thus behave as nucleophilic components toward the noncovalent interaction. This role of some electron‐rich transition metal centers can be considered an oxymoron in the sense that the metal is, in most cases, formally cationic; consequently, its electron donor function is unexpected. The importance of Ha⋅⋅⋅d‐[M] (Ha=halogen; M is Group 9 (Rh, Ir), 10 (Ni, Pd, Pt), or 11 (Cu, Au)) interactions in crystal engineering is emphasized by showing remarkable examples (reported and uncovered by our processing of the Cambridge Structural Database), where this Ha⋅⋅⋅d‐[M] directional interaction guides the formation of solid supramolecular assemblies of different dimensionalities.

Studies of Nature of Uncommon Bifurcated I-I···(I-M) Metal-Involving Noncovalent Interaction in Palladium(II) and Platinum(II) Isocyanide Cocrystals

Two isostructural trans-[MI2(CNXyl)2]·I2 (M = Pd or Pt; CNXyl = 2,6-dimethylphenyl isocyanide) metallopolymeric cocrystals containing uncommon bifurcated iodine···(metal-iodide) contact were obtained. In addition to classical halogen bonding, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a rare type of metal-involved stabilizing contact in both cocrystals. The nature of the noncovalent contact was studied computationally (via DFT, electrostatic surface potential, electron localization function, quantum theory of atoms in molecules, and noncovalent interactions plot methods). Studies confirmed that the I···I halogen bond is the strongest noncovalent interaction in the systems, followed by weaker I···M interaction. The electrophilic and nucleophilic nature of atoms participating in I···M interaction was studied with ED/ESP minima analysis. In trans-[PtI2(CNXyl)2]·I2 cocrystal, Pt atoms act as weak nucleophiles in I···Pt interaction. In the case of trans-[PdI2(CNXyl)2]·I2 cocrystal, electrophilic/nucleophilic roles of Pd and I are not clear, and thus the quasimetallophilic nature of the I···Pd interaction was suggested.

Hydrogen bonding to metals as a probe for an inverted ligand field

Electron-rich, late transition metals are known to act as hydrogen-bonding (HBd) acceptors. In this regard, Pt(ii) centres in square-planar environments are particularly efficient. It is however puzzling that no convincing experimental evidence is currently available for the isoelectronic neighbour Au(iii) being involved in HBd interactions. We report now on the synthesis and characterisation of two series of isoleptic and isoelectronic (d8) compounds [(CF3)3Pt(L)]- and (CF3)3Au(L), where the L ligands are based on the quinoline frame and have been selected to favour HBd with the metal centre. Strong HBd interactions were actually found in the Pt(ii) compounds, based on structural and spectroscopic evidence, and they were further confirmed by theoretical calculations. In contrast, no evidence was obtained in the Au(iii) case. In order to find the reason underlying this general disparity, we undertook a detailed theoretical analysis of the model systems [(CF3)3Pt(py)]- and (CF3)3Au(py). This study revealed that the filled dz2 orbital is the HOMO in the case of Pt(ii), but is buried in the lower energy levels in the case of Au(iii). The sharply different electronic configurations involve ligand-field inversion on going from Pt to the next element Au. This is not a gradual but an abrupt change, which invalidates Au(iii) as a HBd-acceptor wherever ligand-field inversion occurs.

Bifurcated Halogen Bonding Involving Two Rhodium(I) Centers as an Integrated σ-Hole Acceptor

The complexes [RhX(COD)]2 (X = Cl, Br; COD = 1,5-cyclooctadiene) form cocrystals with σ-hole iodine donors. X-ray diffraction studies and extensive theoretical considerations indicate that the d z 2-orbitals of two positively charged rhodium(I) centers provide sufficient nucleophilicity to form a three-center halogen bond (XB) with the σ-hole donors. The two metal centers function as an integrated XB acceptor, providing assembly via a metal-involving XB.

Electron belt-to-σ-hole switch of noncovalently bound iodine(i) atoms in dithiocarbamate metal complexes

The nature of metals in the isostructural series of dithiocarbamate complexes affects the electron belt-to-σ-hole switch of noncovalently bound iodine(i) leading to either semicoordination, or halogen bonding.

Metal-involving halogen bond Ar–I⋯[dz2PtII] in a platinum acetylacetonate complex

The observed and confirmed theoretically metal-involving halogen bond Ar–I⋯[d_z2Pt^II] provides experimental evidence favoring a XB formation step upon oxidative addition of ArI to Pt^II.

Chlorotellurate(iv) supramolecular associates with “trapped” Br2: features of non-covalent halogen⋯halogen interactions in crystalline phases

Reactions of chlorotellurates(iv) and Br₂ afford formation of supramolecular complexes Cat₂{[TeCl₆](Br₂)} (Cat = Me₃N⁺ (1), PyH⁺ (2), 4-MePyH⁺ (3) and 1-MePy⁺ (4)) where dibromine fragments are “trapped” by [TeCl₆]³⁻via Br⋯Cl halogen bonding.

Molecular structure of gold 2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octabromo-5,10,15-tris(4′-pentafluorosulfanylphenyl)corrole: Potential insights into the insolubility of gold octabromocorroles

X-ray structures of gold corroles, which are still rather uncommon, afford significant insights into intermolecular interactions involving Au(III), a subject that has been much less studied than aurophilic and metallophilic interactions involving Au(I). The X-ray structure of gold [Formula: see text]-octabromo-meso-tris(para-pentafluorosulfanylphenyl)corrole, reported herein, has revealed two Au···Br interactions (∼4.2 Å) per Au atom. We suggest that analogous but somewhat stronger Au···Br interactions are a key factor underlying the remarkable insolubility of gold octabromocorrole derivatives.

Electrophilic-Nucleophilic Dualism of Nickel(II) toward Ni···I Noncovalent Interactions: Semicoordination of Iodine Centers via Electron Belt and Halogen Bonding via σ-Hole

The nitrosoguanidinate complex [Ni{NH═C(NMe₂)NN(O)}₂] (1) was cocrystallized with I₂ and sym-trifluorotriiodobenzene (FIB) to give associates 1·2I₂ and 1·2FIB. Structures of these solid species were studied by XRD followed by topological analysis of the electron density distribution within the framework of Bader's approach (QTAIM) at the M06/DZP-DKH level of theory and Hirshfeld surface analysis. Our results along with inspection of XRD (CCDC) data, accompanied by the theoretical calculations, allowed the identification of three types of Ni···I contacts. The Ni···I semicoordination of the electrophilic nickel(II) center with electron belt of I₂ was observed in 1·2I₂, the metal-involving halogen bonding between the nucleophilic nickel(II)-d_z² center and σ-hole of iodine center was recognized and confirmed theoretically in the structure of [FeNi(CN)₄(IPz)(H₂O)]_n (IPz = 4-N-coordinated 2-I-pyrazine), whereas the arrangement of FIB in 1·2FIB provides a boundary case between the semicoordination and the halogen Ni···I bondings. In 1·2I₂ and 1·2FIB, noncovalent interactions were studied by variable temperature XRD detecting the expansion of noncovalent contacts with preservation of covalent bond lengths upon the temperature increase from 100 to 300 K. The nature and energies of all identified types of the Ni···I noncovalent interactions in the obtained (1·2I₂ and 1·2FIB) and in the previously reported ([FeNi(CN)₄(IPz)(H₂O)]_n, [NiL₂](I₃)₂·2I₂ (L = o-phenylene-bis(dimethylphosphine), [NiL]I₂ (L = 1,4,8,11-tetra-azacyclotetradecane), Ni(en)₂]_n[AgI₂]_2n (en = ethylenediamine), and [NiL](ClO₄) (L = 4-iodo-2-((2-(2-(2-pyridyl)ethylsulfanyl)ethylimino)methyl)-phenolate)) structures were studied theoretically. The estimated strengths of these Ni···I noncovalent contacts vary from 1.6 to 4.1 kcal/mol and, as expected, become weaker on heating. This work is the first emphasizing electrophilic-nucleophilic dualism of any metal center toward noncovalent interactions.

Halogen bonding between metal centers and halocarbons

Metal-involving halogen bonding was detected in a series of associates of CHI3 with trans-[PtX2(NCNAlk2)2] (X = Cl, Br). The HI2C-Iη(1)(Pt) halogen bonding and the bifurcated HI2C-Iη(2)(Pt-Cl) halogen bonding - the latter undergoes the thermally induced reversible HI2C-I∙∙∙η(2)(Pt-Cl) ⇄ HI2C-I∙∙∙η(1)(Pt) transformation - were observed and confirmed theoretically.

An elusive vinyl radical isolated as an appended unit in a five-coordinate Co(iii)-bis(iminobenzosemiquinone) complex formed via ligand-centered C-S bond cleavage

Redox-active ligand H4Pra(edt(AP/AP)) experienced C-S bond cleavage during complexation reaction with Co(OAc)2·2H2O in the presence of Et3N in CH3OH in air. Thus, formed complex 1 was composed of two iminobenzosemiquinone radicals in its coordination sphere and an unprecedented stable tethered-vinyl radical. The complex has been characterized by mass, X-ray single crystal, X-band EPR, variable-temperature magnetic moment measurements and DFT based computational study.

Advances in Synthetic Applications of Hypervalent Iodine Compounds

The preparation, structure, and chemistry of hypervalent iodine compounds are reviewed with emphasis on their synthetic application. Compounds of iodine possess reactivity similar to that of transition metals, but have the advantage of environmental sustainability and efficient utilization of natural resources. These compounds are widely used in organic synthesis as selective oxidants and environmentally friendly reagents. Synthetic uses of hypervalent iodine reagents in halogenation reactions, various oxidations, rearrangements, aminations, C-C bond-forming reactions, and transition metal-catalyzed reactions are summarized and discussed. Recent discovery of hypervalent catalytic systems and recyclable reagents, and the development of new enantioselective reactions using chiral hypervalent iodine compounds represent a particularly important achievement in the field of hypervalent iodine chemistry. One of the goals of this Review is to attract the attention of the scientific community as to the benefits of using hypervalent iodine compounds as an environmentally sustainable alternative to heavy metals.

On the non-innocence of “Nacnacs”: ligand-based reactivity in β-diketiminate supported coordination compounds

While β-diketiminate (BDI or ‘nacnac’) ligands have been widely adopted to stabilize a wide range of metal ions in multiple oxidation states and coordination numbers, in several occurrences these ligands do not behave as spectators and participate in reactivity.

Mechanistic Details of Pd(II)-Catalyzed C-H Iodination with Molecular I2: Oxidative Addition vs Electrophilic Cleavage

Transition metal-catalyzed C-H bond halogenation is an important alternative to the highly utilized directed-lithiation methods and increases the accessibility of the synthetically valuable aryl halide compounds. However, this approach often requires impractical reagents, such as IOAc, or strong co-oxidants. Therefore, the development of methodology utilizing inexpensive oxidants and catalyst containing earth-abundant transition metals under mild experimental conditions would represent a significant advance in the field. Success in this endeavor requires a full understanding of the mechanisms and reactivity governing principles of this process. Here, we report intimate mechanistic details of the Pd(II)-catalyzed C-H iodination with molecular I2 as the sole oxidant. Namely, we elucidate the impact of the: (a) Pd-directing group (DG) interaction, (b) nature of oxidant, and (c) nature of the functionalized C-H bond [C(sp(2))-H vs C(sp(3))-H] on the Pd(II)/Pd(IV) redox and Pd(II)/Pd(II) redox-neutral mechanisms of this reaction. We find that both monomeric and dimeric Pd(II) species may act as an active catalyst during the reaction, which preferentially proceeds via the Pd(II)/Pd(II) redox-neutral electrophilic cleavage (EC) pathway for all studied substrates with a functionalized C(sp(2))-H bond. In general, a strong Pd-DG interaction increases the EC iodination barrier and reduces the I-I oxidative addition (OA) barrier. However, the increase in Pd-DG interaction alone is not enough to make the mechanistic switch from EC to OA: This occurs only upon changing to substrates with a functionalized C(sp(3))-H bond. We also investigated the impact of the nature of the electrophile on the C(sp(2))-H bond halogenation. We predicted molecular bromine (Br2) to be more effective electrophile for the C(sp(2))-H halogenation than I2. Subsequent experiments on the stoichiometric C(sp(2))-H bromination by Pd(OAc)2 and Br2 confirmed this prediction.The findings of this study advance our ability to design more efficient reactions with inexpensive oxidants under mild experimental conditions.

Rhodium(ii) dimers without metal–metal bonds

Oxidation of (^MeBDI)Rh(cyclooctene) (^MeBDI = [2,6-Me₂C₆H₃NCMe]₂CH) with Br₂ or I₂ produces paramagnetic halide-bridged Rh^II dimers [(^MeBDI)Rh]₂(μ-X)₂ without a direct Rh–Rh bond.

Dual descriptor and molecular electrostatic potential: complementary tools for the study of the coordination chemistry of ambiphilic ligands

The possibility to retrieve the coordinating properties of ligands by a combined dual descriptor and molecular electrostatic potential analysis is shown, yielding a potentially predictive tool of their ambiphilicity and selectivity.
