Hole interactions of aerogen oxides with Lewis bases: an insight into σ-hole and lone-pair-hole interactions

σ-Hole and lone-pair (lp)-hole interactions of aerogen oxides with Lewis bases (LB) were comparatively inspected in terms of quantum mechanics calculations. The ZOn ⋯ LB complexes (where Z = Kr and Xe, n = 1, 2, 3 and 4, and LB = NH3 and NCH) showed favourable negative interaction energies. The complexation features were explained in light of σ-hole and lp-hole interactions within optimum distances lower than the sum of the respective van der Waals radii. The emerging findings outlined that σ-hole interaction energies generally enhanced according to the following order: KrO4 ⋯ < KrO⋯ < KrO3⋯ < KrO2⋯LB and XeO4⋯ < XeO⋯ < XeO2⋯ < XeO3⋯LB complexes with values ranging from -2.23 to -12.84 kcal mol-1. Lp-hole interactions with values up to -5.91 kcal mol-1 were shown. Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory findings revealed the significant contributions of electrostatic forces accounting for 50-65% of the total attractive forces within most of the ZOn⋯LB complexes. The obtained observations would be useful for the understanding of hole interactions, particularly for the aerogen oxides, with application in supramolecular chemistry and crystal engineering.

The Implications of Drug-Polymer Interactions on the Physical Stability of Amorphous Solid Dispersions

Amorphous solid dispersions (ASDs) are a formulation and development strategy that can be used to increase the apparent aqueous solubility of poorly water-soluble drugs. Their implementation, however, can be hindered by destabilization of the amorphous form, as the drug recrystallizes from its metastable state. Factors such as the drug-polymer solubility, miscibility, mobility, and nucleation/crystal growth rates are all known to impact the physical stability of an ASD. Non-covalent interactions (NCI) between the drug and polymer have also been widely reported to influence product shelf-life. In this review, the relationship between thermodynamic/kinetic factors and adhesive NCI is assessed. Various types of NCIs reported to stabilize ASDs are described, and their role in affecting physical stability is examined. Finally, NCIs that have not yet been widely explored in ASD formulations, but may potentially impact their physical stability are also briefly described. This review aims to stimulate further theoretical and practical exploration of various NCIs and their applications in ASD formulations in the future.

Effects of Lewis Basicity and Acidity on σ-Hole Interactions in Carbon-Bearing Complexes: A Comparative Ab Initio Study

The effects of Lewis basicity and acidity on σ-hole interactions were investigated using two sets of carbon-containing complexes. In Set I, the effect of Lewis basicity was studied by substituting the X3/X atom(s) of the NC-C6H2-X3 and NCX Lewis bases (LB) with F, Cl, Br, or I. In Set II, the W-C-F3 and F-C-X3 (where X and W = F, Cl, Br, and I) molecules were utilized as Lewis acid (LA) centers. Concerning the Lewis basicity effect, higher negative interaction energies (Eint) were observed for the F-C-F3∙∙∙NC-C6H2-X3 complexes compared with the F-C-F3∙∙∙NCX analogs. Moreover, significant Eint was recorded for Set I complexes, along with decreasing the electron-withdrawing power of the X3/X atom(s). Among Set I complexes, the highest negative Eint was ascribed to the F-C-F3∙∙∙NC-C6H2-I3 complex with a value of -1.23 kcal/mol. For Set II complexes, Eint values of F-C-X3 bearing complexes were noted within the -1.05 to -2.08 kcal/mol scope, while they ranged from -0.82 to -1.20 kcal/mol for the W-C-F3 analogs. However, Vs,max quantities exhibited higher values in the case of W-C-F3 molecules compared with F-C-X3; preferable negative Eint were ascribed to the F-C-X3 bearing complexes. These findings were delineated as a consequence of the promoted contributions of the X3 substituents. Dispersion forces (Edisp) were identified as the dominant forces for these interactions. The obtained results provide a foundation for fields such as crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry studies that focus on understanding the characteristics of carbon-bearing complexes.

External Electric Field Effect on the Strength of σ-Hole Interactions: A Theoretical Perspective in Like⋯Like Carbon-Containing Complexes

For the first time, σ-hole interactions within like⋯like carbon-containing complexes were investigated, in both the absence and presence of the external electric field (EEF). The effects of the directionality and strength of the utilized EEF were thoroughly unveiled in the (F-C-F₃)₂, (F-C-H₃)₂, and (H-C-F₃)₂ complexes. In the absence of the EEF, favorable interaction energies, with negative values, are denoted for the (F-C-F₃)₂ and (H-C-F₃)₂ complexes, whereas the (F-C-H₃)₂ complex exhibits unfavorable interactions. Remarkably, the strength of the applied EEF exhibits a prominent role in turning the repulsive forces within the latter complex into attractive ones. The symmetrical nature of the considered like⋯like carbon-containing complexes eradicated the effect of directionality of the EEF. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and the noncovalent interaction (NCI) index, ensured the occurrence of the attractive forces, and also outlined the substantial contributions of the three coplanar atoms to the total strength of the studied complexes. Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory (SAPT) results show the dispersion-driven nature of the interactions.

On the Importance of Pnictogen and Chalcogen Bonding Interactions in Supramolecular Catalysis

In this review, several examples of the application of pnictogen (Pn) (group 15) and chalcogen (Ch) bonding (group 16) interactions in organocatalytic processes are gathered, backed up with Molecular Electrostatic Potential surfaces of model systems. Despite the fact that the use of catalysts based on pnictogen and chalcogen bonding interactions is taking its first steps, it should be considered and used by the scientific community as a novel, promising tool in the field of organocatalysis.

Metal Centers as Nucleophiles: Oxymoron of Halogen Bond-Involving Crystal Engineering

This review highlights recent studies discovering unconventional halogen bonding (HaB) that involves positively charged metal centers. These centers provide their filled d‐orbitals for HaB, and thus behave as nucleophilic components toward the noncovalent interaction. This role of some electron‐rich transition metal centers can be considered an oxymoron in the sense that the metal is, in most cases, formally cationic; consequently, its electron donor function is unexpected. The importance of Ha⋅⋅⋅d‐[M] (Ha=halogen; M is Group 9 (Rh, Ir), 10 (Ni, Pd, Pt), or 11 (Cu, Au)) interactions in crystal engineering is emphasized by showing remarkable examples (reported and uncovered by our processing of the Cambridge Structural Database), where this Ha⋅⋅⋅d‐[M] directional interaction guides the formation of solid supramolecular assemblies of different dimensionalities.

Intramolecular Spodium Bonds in Zn(II) Complexes: Insights from Theory and Experiment

Two new dinuclear zinc(II) complexes, [Zn₂(µ_1,3-OAc)(L¹)₂]I·MeOH (1) and [Zn₂(µ_1,3-OAc)(L²)(NCS)] (2), (where HL¹ = 2-(((3-(dimethylamino)propyl)amino)methyl)-6-methoxy-phenol and H₂L² = 2,2′-[(1-Methyl-1,2-ethanediyl)bis(iminomethylene)]bis[6-ethoxyphenol]) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental and spectral analysis. Their X-ray solid state structures have been determined, revealing the existence of intramolecular Zn···O spodium bonds in both complexes due to the presence of methoxy (1) or ethoxy (2) substituents adjacent to the coordinated phenolic O-atom. These noncovalent interactions have been studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the quantum theory of “atoms-in-molecules” and the noncovalent interaction plot. Moreover, a search in the Cambridge structure database (CSD) has been conducted in order to investigate the prevalence of intramolecular spodium bonds in Zn complexes. To our knowledge this is the first investigation dealing with intramolecular spodium bonds.

Activating both Halogen and Chalcogen Bonding Interactions in Cation Radical Salts of Iodinated Tetrathiafulavalene Derivatives

Halogen bonding (XB) interactions are investigated in cation radical salts of bis(methylthio)-5,5'-diiodotetrathiafulvalene (1). Electrocrystallization of 1 in the presence of Bu₄ NCl affords a 1 : 1 salt formulated as (E-1)Cl. Particularly strong I⋅⋅⋅Cl^- XB interactions are observed around the Cl^- anion with the distances at 78 % the sum of the van der Waals radii, a consequence of the XB charge activation in the cation radical. Moreover, the Cl^- environment is complemented by two extra S⋅⋅⋅Cl^- chalcogen bonding (ChB) interactions, an original feature among reported halide salts of TTF derivatives. Electrostatic potential calculations on the cation radical further demonstrate the efficient activation of the S atoms of the 1,3-dithiole rings (V_s,max =87.2 kcal/mol), as strong as with the iodine atoms (V_s,max =87.9 kcal/mol). The radical cations form weakly dimerized stacks, as confirmed by the variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and the weak conductivity (4.8×10^-5  S cm^-1 ).

Covalent and Non-covalent Noble Gas Bonding Interactions in XeF n Derivatives (n = 2-6): A Combined Theoretical and ICSD Analysis

A noble gas bond (also known in the literature as aerogen bond) can be defined as the attractive interaction between any element of group-18 acting as a Lewis acid and any electron rich atom of group of atoms, thus following the IUPAC recommendation available for similar π,σ-hole interactions involving elements of groups 17 (halogens) and 16 (chalcogens). A significant difference between noble gas bonding (NgB) and halogen (HaB) or chalcogen (ChB) bonding is that whilst the former is scarcely found in the literature, HaB and ChB are very common and their applications in important fields like catalysis, biochemistry or crystal engineering have exponentially grown in the last decade. This article combines theory and experiment to highlight the importance of non-covalent NgBs in the solid state of several xenon fluorides [XeF_n]^m+ were the central oxidation state of Xe varies from +2 to +6 and the number of fluorine atoms varies from n = 2 to 6. The compounds with an odd number of fluorine atoms (n = 3 and 5) are cationic (m = 1). The Inorganic Crystal Structural Database (ICSD) strongly evidences the relevance of NgBs in the solid state structures of xenon derivatives. The ability of Xe compounds to participate in π,σ-hole interactions has been studied using different types of electron donors (Lewis bases and anions) using DFT calculations (PBE1PBE-D3/def2-TZVP) and the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) surfaces.

Nitropyridine-1-Oxides as Excellent π-Hole Donors: Interplay between σ-Hole (Halogen, Hydrogen, Triel, and Coordination Bonds) and π-Hole Interactions

In this manuscript, we use the primary source of geometrical information, i.e., Cambridge Structural Database (CSD), combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations (PBE0-D3/def2-TZVP level of theory) to demonstrate the relevance of π-hole interactions in para-nitro substituted pyridine-1-oxides. More importantly, we show that the molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) value above and below the π–hole of the nitro group is largely influenced by the participation of the N-oxide group in several interactions like hydrogen-bonding (HB) halogen-bonding (XB), triel bonding (TrB), and finally, coordination-bonding (CB) (N⁺–O⁻ coordinated to a transition metal). The CSD search discloses that p-nitro-pyridine-1-oxide derivatives have a strong propensity to participate in π-hole interactions via the nitro group and, concurrently, N-oxide group participates in a series of interactions as electron donor. Remarkably, the DFT calculations show from strong to moderate cooperativity effects between π–hole and HB/XB/TrB/CB interactions (σ-bonding). The synergistic effects between π-hole and σ-hole bonding interactions are studied in terms of cooperativity energies, using MEP surface analysis and the Bader’s quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM).

Halogen bonding in hypervalent iodine and bromine derivatives: halonium salts

Halogen bonds have been identified in a series of ionic compounds involving bromonium and iodonium cations and several different anions, some also containing hypervalent atoms. The hypervalent bromine and iodine atoms in the examined compounds are found to have positive σ-holes on the extensions of their covalent bonds, while the hypervalent atoms in the anions have negative σ-holes. The positive σ-holes on the halogens of the studied halonium salts determine the linearity of the short contacts between the halogen and neutral or anionic electron donors, as usual in halogen bonds.

Chalcogen- and halogen-bonds involving SX2 (X = F, Cl, and Br) with formaldehyde

The capacity of SX2 (X = F, Cl, and Br) to engage in different kinds of noncovalent bonds was investigated by ab initio calculations. SCl2 (SBr2) has two σ-holes upon extension of Cl (Br)-S bonds, and two σ-holes upon extension of S-Cl (Br) bonds. SF2 contains only two σ-holes upon extension of the F-S bond. Consequently, SCl2 and SBr2 form chalcogen and halogen bonds with the electron donor H2CO while SF2 forms only a chalcogen bond, i.e., no F···O halogen bond was found in the SF2:H2CO complex. The S···O chalcogen bond between SF2 and H2CO is the strongest, while the strongest halogen bond is Br···O between SBr2 and H2CO. The nature of these two types of noncovalent interaction was probed by a variety of methods, including molecular electrostatic potentials, QTAIM, energy decomposition, and electron density shift maps. Termolecular complexes X2S···H2CO···SX'2 (X = F, Cl, Br, and X' = Cl, Br) were constructed to study the interplay between chalcogen bonds and halogen bonds. All these complexes contained S···O and Cl (Br)···O bonds, with longer intermolecular distances, smaller values of electron density, and more positive three-body interaction energies, indicating negative cooperativity between the chalcogen bond and the halogen bond. In addition, for all complexes studied, interactions involving chalcogen bonds were more favorable than those involving halogen bonds.
