High-temperature spin crossover behavior in a nitrogen-rich Fe(III)-based system

Transformation of Mononuclear Plutonium(III) Tetrazolate Complexes into Dinuclear Complexes in the Solid State

The salt metathesis reaction of Na(pmtz)·H2O [pmtz- = 5-(pyrimidyl)tetrazolate] and PuBr3·nH2O in an aqueous media leads to the formation of the mononuclear compound [Pu(pmtz)3(H2O)3]·(3 + n) H2O (Pu1, n = ∼8) that is isotypic with the lanthanide compounds [Ln(pmtz)3(H2O)3]·(3 + n) H2O (Ln = Ce-Nd). Dissolution and recrystallization of Pu1 in water yields the dinuclear compound {[Pu(pmtz)2(H2O)3]2(μ-pmtz)}2(pmtz)2·14H2O (Pu2), which is isotypic with the lanthanide compounds {[Ln(pmtz)2(H2O)3]2(μ-pmtz)}2(pmtz)2·14H2O (Ln = Nd and Sm). Like their nine-coordinate ionic radii, the M-O and M-N bond lengths in Pu1/Pu2 and Nd1/Nd2, respectively, are within error of one another. The Laporte-forbidden 4f → 4f and 5f → 5f transitions are also assigned in the UV-vis-NIR spectra for these f-element tetrazolate coordination compounds.

Spin Crossover and Fluorine-Specific Interactions in Metal Complexes of Terpyridines with Polyfluorocarbon Tails

In coordination chemistry and materials science, terpyridine ligands are of great interest, due to their ability to form stable complexes with a broad range of transition metal ions. We report three terpyridine ligands containing different perfluorocarbon (PFC) tails on the backbone and the corresponding FeII and CoII complexes. The CoII complexes display spin crossover close to ambient temperature, and the nature of this spin transition is influenced by the length of the PFC tail on the ligand backbone. The electrochemical properties of the metal complexes were investigated with cyclic voltammetry revealing one oxidation and several reduction processes. The fluorine-specific interactions were investigated by EPR measurements. Analysis of the EPR spectra of the complexes as microcrystalline powders and in solution reveals exchange-narrowed spectra without resolved hyperfine splittings arising from the 59 Co nucleus; this suggests complex aggregation in solution mediated by interactions of the PFC tails. Interestingly, addition of perfluoro-octanol in different ratios to the acetonitrile solution of the sample resulted in the disruption of the F ⋯ ${\cdots }$ F interactions of the tails. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first investigation of fluorine-specific interactions in metal complexes through EPR spectroscopy, as exemplified by exchange narrowing.

Spin Crossover and High-Spin State in Fe(II) Anionic Polymorphs Based on Tripodal Ligands

Two new mononuclear Fe(II) polymorphs, [(C₂H₅)₄N]₂[Fe(py₃C-OEt)(NCS)₃]₂ (1) and [(C₂H₅)₄N][Fe(py₃C-OEt)(NCS)₃] (2) (py₃C-OEt = tris(pyridin-2-yl)ethoxymethane), have been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, by magnetic and photomagnetic measurements, and by detailed variable-temperature infrared spectroscopy. The molecular structure, in both complexes, is composed of the same anionic [Fe(py₃C-OEt)(NCS)₃]^- complex (two units for 1 and one unit for 2) generated by coordination to the Fe(II) metal center of one tridentate py₃C-OEt tripodal ligand and three terminal κN-SCN coligands. Magnetic studies revealed that polymorph 2 displays a high-spin (HS) state over the entire studied temperature range (300-10 K), while complex 1 exhibits an abrupt and complete spin crossover (SCO) transition at ca. 132.3 K, the structural characterizations of which, performed at 295 and 100 K, show a strong modification, resulting from the thermal evolutions of the Fe-N bond lengths and of the distortion parameters (∑ and Θ) of the FeN₆ coordination sphere, in agreement with the presence of HS and low-spin (LS) states at 295 and 100 K, respectively. This thermal transition has been also confirmed by the thermal evolution of the maximum absorbance for ν(NCS) vibrational bands recorded in the temperature range 200-10 K. In 1 the signature of a metastable photoinduced HS state has been observed using photomagnetic and photoinfrared spectroscopy, leading to a similar T(LIESST) relaxation temperature (LIESST = light-induced excited spin-state trapping) of 70 K.

High temperature anionic Fe(III) spin crossover behavior in a mixed-valence Fe(II)/Fe(III) complex

Two ion-pair Fe(iii) complexes (PPh4)[FeIII(HATD)2]·2H2O (1, H3ATD = azotetrazolyl-2,7-dihydroxynaphthalene) and [FeII(phen)3][FeIII(HATD)2]2·3DMA·3.5H2O (2, phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, DMA = N,N-dimethylformamide) were synthesized by employing the tridentate ligand H3ATD. Crystal structure analyses reveal that complexes 1 and 2 consist of FeIII ions in an octahedral environment where a FeIII ion is coordinated by two HATD2- ligands forming the [FeIII(HATD)2]- core. The shortest cationanion distance between the phosphorus ion of the (PPh4)+ cation and the ferric ion of the [FeIII(HATD)2]- anion is 13.190 Å in complex 1, whereas that between the ferrous ion of the [FeII(Phen)3]2+ cation and the ferric ion of the [FeIII(HATD)2]- anion is 7.821 Å in complex 2. C-HC and C-HO hydrogen interactions between the [FeII(phen)3]2+ cation and the [FeIII(HATD)2]- anion are observed in 2. Face-to-face π-π stacking interactions between naphthalene rings with the separated interplanar center to center distances of 3.421-3.680 Å were observed, which result in a one-dimensional supramolecular chain in complexes 1 and 2. Magnetic measurements show that complex 1 is in the low-spin (LS) state below 500 K, whereas 2 undergoes a high temperature spin crossover (SCO) between 360 and 500 K. Magneto-structural relationship studies reveal that π-stacking, hydrogen interactions and Coulomb interactions between the [FeIII(HATD)2]- anion and the [FeII(phen)3]2+ cation play a crucial role in the high temperature Fe(iii) SCO behaviour of complex 2.

Incorporation of a nitrogen-rich energetic ligand in a {Yb} complex exhibiting slow relaxation of the magnetisation under an applied field

Though often used as the precursor in energetic materials research and organic synthesis, 3,6-dihydrazinyl-1,2,4,5-tetrazine (dhtz) has not been previously explored in coordination chemistry. Herein, we present the first crystalline coordination compound with dhtz, [Yb₂(dhtz)(fod)₆] (fod^- = 6,6,7,7,8,8,8-heptafluoro-2,2-dimethyl-3,5-octanedionate). This compound exhibits Single-Molecule Magnet behaviour under an applied magnetic field, and m_J states were resolved through luminescence studies.

Spin Cross-Over (SCO) Anionic Fe(II) Complexes Based on the Tripodal Ligand Tris(2-pyridyl)ethoxymethane

Reactions of Fe(II) with the tripodal chelating ligand 1,1,1-tris(2-pyridyl)ethoxymethane (py3C-OEt) and (NCE)− co-ligands (E = S, Se, BH3) give a series of mononuclear complexes formulated as [Fe(py3C-OEt)2][Fe(py3C-OEt)(NCE)3]2·2CH3CN, with E = S (1) and BH3 (2). These compounds are the first Fe(II) spin cross-over (SCO) complexes based on the tripodal ligand tris(2-pyridyl)ethoxymethane and on the versatile co-ligands (NCS)− and (NCBH3)−. The crystal structure reveals discrete monomeric isomorph structures formed by a cationic [Fe(py3C-OEt)2]2+ complex and by two equivalent anionic [Fe(py3C-OEt)(NCE)3]− complexes. In the cations the Fe(II) is facially coordinated by two py3C-OEt tripodal ligands whereas in the anion the three nitrogen atoms of the tripodal ligand are facially coordinated and the N-donor atoms of the three (NCE)− co-ligands occupy the remaining three positions to complete the distorted octahedral environment of the Fe(II) centre. The magnetic studies show the presence of gradual SCO for both complexes: A one-step transition around 205 K for 1 and a two-step transition for compound 2, centered around 245 K and 380 K.

Spin-crossover in an organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite

The first spin-crossover complex with an organic–inorganic hybrid perovskite structure is reported, which displays three-step spin-crossover, light-induced excited spin-state trapping and spin-state dependent fluorescence properties.

Nitrogen-Rich Energetic Metal-Organic Framework: Synthesis, Structure, Properties, and Thermal Behaviors of Pb(II) Complex Based on N,N-Bis(1H-tetrazole-5-yl)-Amine

The focus of energetic materials is on searching for a high-energy, high-density, insensitive material. Previous investigations have shown that 3D energetic metal-organic frameworks (E-MOFs) have great potential and advantages in this field. A nitrogen-rich E-MOF, Pb(bta)·2H₂O [N% = 31.98%, H₂bta = N,N-Bis(1H-tetrazole-5-yl)-amine], was prepared through a one-step hydrothermal reaction in this study. Its crystal structure was determined through single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The complex has high heat denotation (16.142 kJ·cm^-3), high density (3.250 g·cm^-3), and good thermostability (T_dec = 614.9 K, 5 K·min^-1). The detonation pressure and velocity obtained through theoretical calculations were 43.47 GPa and 8.963 km·s^-1, respectively. The sensitivity test showed that the complex is an impact-insensitive material (IS > 40 J). The thermal decomposition process and kinetic parameters of the complex were also investigated through thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry. Non-isothermal kinetic parameters were calculated through the methods of Kissinger and Ozawa-Doyle. Results highlighted the nitrogen-rich MOF as a potential energetic material.

Predicting the spin state of paramagnetic iron complexes by DFT calculation of proton NMR spectra

Many transition-metal complexes easily change their spin state S in response to external perturbations (spin crossover). Determining such states and their dynamics can play a central role in the understanding of useful properties such as molecular magnetism or catalytic behavior, but is often far from straightforward. In this work we demonstrate that, at a moderate computational cost, density functional calculations can predict the correct ground spin state of Fe(ii) and Fe(iii) complexes and can then be used to determine the (1)H NMR spectra of all spin states. Since the spectral features are remarkably different according to the spin state, calculated (1)H NMR resonances can be used to infer the correct spin state, along with supporting the structure elucidation of numerous paramagnetic complexes.

High-temperature spin crossover in two solvent-free coordination polymers with unusual high thermal stability

Two solvent-free two-dimensional (2D) coordination polymers, (2)∞[Fe(ptim)2] (1) and (2)∞[Fe(ptpy)2] (2) (Hptim = 2-(5-(4-(1H-imidazol-1-yl)phenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)pyridine; Hptpy = 2-(5-(4-(pyridin-3-yl)phenyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)pyridine), have been successfully prepared by solvothermal reactions. Their iron atoms are bridged by the corresponding multidentate anionic ligands into dense neutral structures. The magnetic data reveal that complexes 1 and 2 are rare examples exhibiting reversible one-step high-temperature spin crossover behaviors with spin transition temperatures of 419 and 416 K, respectively. Moreover, these structures also display remarkable thermal stability up to 714 K (for 1) and 690 K (for 2), which are confirmed by thermogravimetric and variable-temperature powder X-ray diffraction analyses.

Holins in bacteria, eukaryotes, and archaea: multifunctional xenologues with potential biotechnological and biomedical applications

Holins form pores in the cytoplasmic membranes of bacteria for the primary purpose of releasing endolysins that hydrolyze the cell wall and induce cell death. Holins are encoded within bacteriophage genomes, where they promote cell lysis for virion release, and within bacterial genomes, where they serve a diversity of potential or established functions. These include (i) release of gene transfer agents, (ii) facilitation of programs of differentiation such as those that allow sporulation and spore germination, (iii) contribution to biofilm formation, (iv) promotion of responses to stress conditions, and (v) release of toxins and other proteins. There are currently 58 recognized families of holins and putative holins with members exhibiting between 1 and 4 transmembrane α-helical spanners, but many more families have yet to be discovered. Programmed cell death in animals involves holin-like proteins such as Bax and Bak that may have evolved from bacterial holins. Holin homologues have also been identified in archaea, suggesting that these proteins are ubiquitous throughout the three domains of life. Phage-mediated cell lysis of dual-membrane Gram-negative bacteria also depends on outer membrane-disrupting "spanins" that function independently of, but in conjunction with, holins and endolysins. In this minireview, we provide an overview of their modes of action and the first comprehensive summary of the many currently recognized and postulated functions and uses of these cell lysis systems. It is anticipated that future studies will result in the elucidation of many more such functions and the development of additional applications.
