Abstract
Complexes featuring metal-metal bonds play crucial roles in catalysis and small molecule activation due to the synergistic effects between the metals. Here, we report a series of homometallic cobalt complexes with metal-metal interactions that have been successfully stabilized by a multidentate ligand platform. Theoretical studies on metal-metal interactions in these cobalt complexes are discussed.

Abstract
We report the synthesis, crystal structure, and characterisation of a dinuclear Co(II) compound with thiodiacetate (tda) and phenanthroline (phen) as ligands (1), and of a series of metal complexes isomorphous to 1 with different Co : Zn ratios (2, 4 : 1; 3, 1 : 1; 4, 1 : 4; 5, 1 : 10). General characterisation methodologies and X-ray data showed that all the synthesised complexes are isomorphous to Zn(II) and Cu(II) analogues (CSD codes: DUHXEL and BEBQII). 1 consists of centrosymmetric Co(II) ion dimers in which the ions are 3.214 Å apart, linked by two μ-O bridges. Each cobalt atom is in a distorted octahedral environment of the N2O3S type. UV-vis spectra of 1 and 5 are in line with high spin (S = 3/2) Co(II) ions in octahedral coordination and indicate that the electronic structure of both Co(II) ions in the dinuclear unit does not significantly change relative to that of the magnetically isolated Co(II) ion. EPR spectra of powder samples of 5 (Co : Zn ratio of 1 : 10) together with spectral simulation indicated high spin Co(II) ions with high rhombic distortion of the zfs [E/D = 0.31(1), D > 0]. DC magnetic susceptibility experiments on 1 and analysis of the data constraining the E/D value obtained by EPR yielded g = 2.595(7), |D| = 61(1) cm-1, and an intradimer ferromagnetic exchange coupling of J = 1.39(4) cm-1. EPR spectra as a function of Co : Zn ratio for both powder and single crystal samples confirmed that they result from two effective S' = 1/2 spins that interact through dipolar and isotropic exchange interactions to yield magnetically isolated S' = 1 centres and that interdimeric exchange interactions, putatively mediated by hydrophobic interactions between phen moieties, are negligible. The latter observation contrasts with that observed in the Cu(II) analogue, where a transition from S = 1 to S' = 1/2 was observed. Computational calculations indicated that the absence of the interdimeric exchange interaction in 1 is due to a lower Co(II) ion spin density delocalisation towards the metal ligands.

Abstract
Bridged dinuclear metal complexes have fascinated scientists worldwide, and remarkable success has been achieved to unravel the electronic structures, structure-function relationship, coordination environments, and fine mechanistic details of the enzymes owing to the repercussion of biomimetic studies carried out on dinuclear model systems. Molecular level study of these systems integrated with spectroscopic study helps in gaining deep insights about structural and electronic aspects of natural enzymatic systems. Considering the same, here first time we report DFT study on bridged non-heme metal complexes based on N-Et-HPTB ligand system containing homovalent (MIIMII); {[(MnII)2(O2CCH3)(N-Et-HPTB)]2+; Species I), [(FeII)2(O2CCH3)(N-Et-HPTB)]2+; Species II), [(CoII)2(O2CCH3)(N-Et-HPTB)]2+; Species III)} and heterovalent (MIIIMII): {[(MnIII)(MnII)(O2)(N-Et-HPTB)]2+; Species Ia) [(FeIII)(FeII)(O2)(N-Et-HPTB)]2+; Species IIa) and [(CoIII)(CoII)(O2)(N-Et-HPTB)]2+; Species IIIa)} dinuclear metal centres. Bridging oxygen bears a significant spin density which may prompt important chemical reactions involving activation of bonds like C-H/O-H/N-H etc. TD-DFT calculations for UV-Visible absorption have been carried out to further shed light on structural-functional and electronic structures of these dinuclear species. Studying these dinuclear species may be a good starting point for the study of active sites of the bimetallic centre of dinuclear enzymes and thus may serve as fascinating spectroscopic models. Further, FMO analysis, MEP mapping, and NBO calculations were employed to analyze bonding aspects predict theoretical reactivity behaviour and any kind of stabilizing interactions present in the reported species.

Abstract
Here, we present a heterometallic coordination polymer that exhibits heterogeneous electrocatalytic activities for both water reduction and water oxidation. Treatment of the PtII2PdII2 tetranuclear complex [Pd2{Pt(NH3)2(D-pen)2}2] ([1]; D-H2pen = D-penicillamine) with CoX2 (X = Cl, Br) provided (PtII2PdII2CoII2)n coordination polymers [Co2(H2O)6(1)]X4 ([2]X4), in which the PtII2PdII2 units of [1] are linked by [Co2(μ-H2O)(H2O)5]4+ moieties in a 3D network structure. [2]X4 showed a colour change from orange to dark green upon dehydration, reflecting the geometrical conversion of the CoII centres in [Co2(μ-H2O)(H2O)5]4+ from an octahedron to a tetrahedron by the removal of aqua ligands. While both [2]Cl4 and [2]Br4 electrochemically catalysed water reduction to H2 in the solid state due to the presence of PdII active centres, water oxidation to O2 was catalysed only by [2]Br4, which is ascribed to the presence of Br- ions that mediate the catalytic reactions that occurred at CoII active centres.

Abstract
Organophosphates are a class of organic compounds that are important for living organisms, forming the building blocks for DNA, RNA, and some essential cofactors. Furthermore, non-natural organophosphates are widely used in industrial applications, including as pesticides; in laundry detergents; and, unfortunately, as chemical weapons agents. In some cases, the natural degradation of organophosphates can take thousands of years; this longevity creates problems associated with handling and the storage of waste generated by such phosphate esters, in particular. Efforts to develop new catalysts for the cleavage of phosphate esters have progressed in recent decades, mainly in the area of homogeneous catalysis. In contrast, the development of heterogeneous catalysts for the hydrolysis of organophosphates has not been as prominent. Herein, examples of heterogeneous systems are described and the importance of the development of heterogeneous catalysts applicable to organophosphate hydrolysis is highlighted, shedding light on recent advances related to different solid matrices that have been employed.

Abstract
In recent years, transition metal complexes have been developed for catalytical degradation of a phosphate ester bond, particularly in RNA and DNA; however, less consideration has been given for development of complexes for the degradation of a phosphorothioate bond, as they are the foremost used pesticides in the environment and are toxic to human beings. In this context, we have developed copper complexes of benzimidazolium based ligands for catalytical degradation of a series of organophosphates (parathion, paraoxon, methyl-parathion) at ambient conditions. The copper complexes (assigned as N1-N3) were characterized using single X-ray crystallography which revealed that all three complexes are mononuclear and distorted square planner in geometry. Further, the solution state studies of the prepared complexes were carried out using UV-visible absorption, fluorescence spectroscopy, and cyclic voltametry. The complexes N1 and N2 have benzimidazolium ionic liquid as base attached with two 2-mercapto-benzimidazole pods, whereas complex N3 contains a nonionic ligand. The synthesized copper complexes were evaluated for their catalytic activity for degradation of organophosphates. It is interesting that the complex containing the ionic ligand efficiently degrades phosphorothioate pesticides, whereas complex N3 was not found to be appropriate for degradation due to a weaker conversion rate. The organophosphate degradation studies were monitored by recording absorbance spectra of parathion in the presence of catalyst, i.e., copper complexes with respect to time. The parathion was hydrolyzed into para-nitrophenol and diethyl thiophosphate. Moreover, to analyze the inhibition activity of the pesticides toward acetylcholine esterase enzyme in the presence of prepared metal complexes, Ellman's assay was performed and revealed that, within 20 min, the inhibition of acetylcholine esterase enzyme decreases by up to 13%.

Abstract
A dinickel(II) complex of the ligand 1,3-bis(bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)amino)propan-2-ol (HL1) has been prepared and characterized to generate a functional model for nickel(II) phosphoesterase enzymes. The complex, [Ni2(L1)(μ-OAc)(H2O)2](ClO4)2·H2O, was characterized by microanalysis, X-ray crystallography, UV-visible, and IR absorption spectroscopy and solid state magnetic susceptibility measurements. Susceptibility studies show that the complex is antiferromagnetically coupled with the best fit parameters J = -27.4 cm-1, g = 2.29, D = 28.4 cm-1, comparable to corresponding values measured for the analogous dicobalt(II) complex [Co2(L1)(μ-OAc)](ClO4)2·0.5 H2O (J = -14.9 cm-1 and g = 2.16). Catalytic measurements with the diNi(II) complex using the substrate bis(2,4-dinitrophenyl)phosphate (BDNPP) demonstrated activity toward hydrolysis of the phosphoester substrate with K m ~10 mM, and k cat ~0.025 s-1. The combination of structural and catalytic studies suggests that the likely mechanism involves a nucleophilic attack on the substrate by a terminal nucleophilic hydroxido moiety.

Abstract
A series of dinuclear metal(ii)-acetato complexes: [Ni2(μ-L(Cl)O)(μ2-OAc)2](PF6)·3H2O (1), [Ni2(μ-L(Cl)O)(μ2-OAc)2](ClO4)·CH3COCH3 (2), [Cu2(μ-L(Cl)O)(μ2-OAc)(ClO4)](ClO4) (3), [Cu2(μ-L(Cl)O)(OAc)2](PF6)·H2O (4), [Zn2(μ-L(Cl)O)(μ2-OAc)2](PF6) (5) and [Mn2(L(Cl)-O)(μ2-OAc)2](ClO4)·H2O (6), where L(Cl)O(-) = 2,6-bis[bis(2-pyridylmethyl)aminomethyl]-4-chlorophenolate, were synthesized. The complexes were structurally characterized by spectroscopic techniques and single crystal X-ray crystallography. Six-coordinate geometries with doubly bridged acetato ligands were found in Ni(ii), Zn(ii) and Mn(ii) complexes 1, 2, 5 and 6, whereas with Cu(ii) complexes a five-coordinate species was obtained with 4, and mixed five- and six-coordinate geometries with a doubly bridged dimetal core were observed in 3. The magnetic properties of complexes 1-4 and 6 were studied at variable temperatures and revealed weak to very weak antiferromagnetic interactions in 1, 2, 4 and 6 (J = -0.55 to -9.4 cm(-1)) and ferromagnetic coupling in 3 (J = 15.4 cm(-1)). These results are consistent with DFT calculations performed at the B3LYP/def2-TZVP(-f) level of theory. Under physiological conditions, the interaction of the dinculear complexes 1-5 with supercoiled plasmid ds-DNA did not show any pronounced nuclease activity, but Ni(ii) complexes 1 and 2 revealed a strong ability to unwind the supercoiled conformation of ds-DNA. The mechanistic studies performed on the interaction of the Ni(ii) complexes with DNA demonstrated the important impact of the nickel(ii) ion in the unwinding process. In combination with the DNA study, the phosphatase activity of complexes 1, 3, and 5 was examined by the phosphodiester hydrolysis of bis(2,4-dinitrophenol)phosphate (BDNPP) in the pH range of 5.5-10.5 at 25 °C. The Michaelis-Menten kinetics performed at pH 7 and 10.7 showed that catalytic efficiencies kcat/KM (kcat = catalytic rate constant, KM = substrate binding constant) decrease in the order: Ni(ii), 1 > Zn(ii), 5 > Cu(ii), 3. A similar trend was also observed with the turnover numbers at pH = 7. The results are discussed in relation to the coordination geometry and nature of the metal center as well as the steric environment imposed by the compartmental phenoxido ligand.

Abstract
Magnetic properties of dinuclear nickel(II) complex [Ni2(sym-hmp)2](BPh4)2·3.5DMF·0.5(2-PrOH) (1), where (sym-hmp)- is 2,6-bis[(2-hydroxyethyl)methylaminomethyl]-4-methylphenolate anion and DMF indicates dimethylformamide, were investigated using high-frequency and -field electron paramagnetic resonance (HFEPR). To magnetically characterize the mononuclear nickel(II) species forming the dimer, its two dinuclear zinc(II) analogues, [Zn2(sym-hmp)2](BPh4)2·3.5DMF·0.5(2-PrOH) (2) and [Zn2(sym-hmp)2](BPh4)2·2acetone·2H2O (2'), were prepared. One of them (2') was structurally characterized by X-ray diffractometry and doped with 5% mol nickel(II) ions to prepare a mixed crystal 3. From the HFEPR results on complex 1 obtained at 40 K, the spin Hamiltonian parameters of the first excited spin state (S = 1) of the dimer were accurately determined as |D1| = 9.99(2) cm-1, |E1| = 1.62(1) cm-1, and g1 = [2.25(1), 2.19(2), 2.27(2)], and for the second excited spin state (S = 2) at 150 K estimated as |D2| ≈ 3.5 cm-1. From these numbers, the single-ion zero-field splitting (ZFS) parameter of the Ni(II) ions forming the dimer was estimated as |DNi| ≈ 10-10.5 cm-1. The HFEPR spectra of 3 yielded directly the single-ion parameters for DNi = +10.1 cm-1, |ENi| = 3.1 cm-1, and giso = 2.2. On the basis of the HFEPR results, the previously obtained magnetic data (Sakiyama, H.; Tone, K.; Yamasaki, M.; Mikuriya, M. Inorg. Chim. Acta 2011, 365, 183) were reanalyzed, and the isotropic interaction parameter between the Ni(II) ions was determined as J = -70 cm-1 (Hex = -J SA·SB). Finally, density functional theory calculations yielded the J value of -90 cm-1 in a qualitative agreement with the experiment.

Abstract
Ketol-acid reductoisomerase (KARI) is a Mg(2+) -dependent enzyme in the branched-chain amino acid biosynthesis pathway. It catalyses a complex two-part reaction: an alkyl migration followed by a NADPH-dependent reduction. Both reactions occur within the one active site, but in particular, the mechanism of the isomerisation step is poorly understood. Here, using a combination of kinetic, thermodynamic and spectroscopic techniques, the reaction mechanisms of both Escherichia coli and rice KARI have been investigated. We propose a conserved mechanism of catalysis, whereby a hydroxide, bridging the two Mg(2+) ions in the active site, initiates the reaction by abstracting a proton from the C2 alcohol group of the substrate. While the μ-hydroxide-bridged dimetallic centre is pre-assembled in the bacterial enzyme, in plant KARI substrate binding leads to a reduction of the metal-metal distance with the concomitant formation of a hydroxide bridge. Only Mg(2+) is capable of promoting the isomerisation reaction, likely to be due to non-competent substrate binding in the presence of other metal ions.

Abstract
Binding of the competitive inhibitor L-captopril to the dapE-encoded N-succinyl-L,L-diaminopimelic acid desuccinylase from Neisseria meningitidis (NmDapE) was examined by kinetic, spectroscopic, and crystallographic methods. L-Captopril, an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor, was previously shown to be a potent inhibitor of the DapE from Haemophilus influenzae (HiDapE) with an IC50 of 3.3 μM and a measured Ki of 1.8 μM and displayed a dose-responsive antibiotic activity toward Escherichia coli. L-Captopril is also a competitive inhibitor of NmDapE with a Ki of 2.8 μM. To examine the nature of the interaction of L-captopril with the dinuclear active site of DapE, we have obtained electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) data for the enzymatically hyperactive Co(II)-substituted forms of both HiDapE and NmDapE. EPR and MCD data indicate that the two Co(II) ions in DapE are antiferromagnetically coupled, yielding an S = 0 ground state, and suggest a thiolate bridge between the two metal ions. Verification of a thiolate-bridged dinuclear complex was obtained by determining the three-dimensional X-ray crystal structure of NmDapE in complex with L-captopril at 1.8 Å resolution. Combination of these data provides new insights into binding of L-captopril to the active site of DapE enzymes as well as important inhibitor-active site residue interaction's. Such information is critical for the design of new, potent inhibitors of DapE enzymes.

Abstract
At least one-third of enzymes contain metal ions as cofactors necessary for a diverse range of catalytic activities. In the case of polymetallic enzymes (i.e., two or more metal ions involved in catalysis), the presence of two (or more) closely spaced metal ions gives an additional advantage in terms of (i) charge delocalisation, (ii) smaller activation barriers, (iii) the ability to bind larger substrates, (iv) enhanced electrostatic activation of substrates, and (v) decreased transition-state energies. Among this group of proteins, enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of ester and amide bonds form a very prominent family, the metallohydrolases. These enzymes are involved in a multitude of biological functions, and an increasing number of them gain attention for translational research in medicine and biotechnology. Their functional versatility and catalytic proficiency are largely due to the presence of metal ions in their active sites. In this chapter, we thus discuss and compare the reaction mechanisms of several closely related enzymes with a view to highlighting the functional diversity bestowed upon them by their metal ion cofactors.

Abstract
We report single-crystal X-band EPR and magnetic measurements of the coordination polymer catena-(trans-(μ2-fumarato)tetraaquacobalt(II)), 1, and the Co(II)-doped Zn(II) analogue, 2, in different Zn:Co ratios. 1 presents two magnetically inequivalent high spin S = 3/2 Co(II) ions per unit cell, named A and B, in a distorted octahedral environment coordinated to four water oxygen atoms and trans coordinated to two carboxylic oxygen atoms from the fumarate anions, in which the Co(II) ions are linked by hydrogen bonds and fumarate molecules. Magnetic susceptibility and magnetization measurements of 1 indicate weak antiferromagnetic exchange interactions between the S = 3/2 spins of the Co(II) ions in the crystal lattice. Oriented single crystal EPR experiments of 1 and 2 were used to evaluate the molecular g-tensor and the different exchange coupling constants between the Co(II) ions, assuming an effective spin S′= 1/2. Unexpectedly, the eigenvectors of the molecular g-tensor were not lying along any preferential bond direction, indicating that, in high spin Co(II) ions in roughly octahedral geometry with approximately axial EPR signals, the presence of molecular pseudo axes in the metal site does not determine preferential directions for the molecular g-tensor. The EPR experiment and magnetic measurements, together with a theoretical analysis relating the coupling constants obtained from both techniques, allowed us to evaluate selectively the exchange coupling constant associated with hydrogen bonds that connect magnetically inequivalent Co(II) ions (|JAB(1/2)| = 0.055(2) cm(–1)) and the exchange coupling constant associated with a fumarate bridge connecting equivalent Co(II) ions (|JAA(1/2)| ≈ 0.25 (1) cm(–1)), in good agreement with the average J(3/2) value determined from magnetic measurements.
