Abstract
Unreactive C-H bond activation is a new horizon for frustrated Lewis pair (FLP) chemistry. This study provides a systematic assessment of the catalytic reactivity of recently reported intra-molecular FLPs on the activation of typical inert C-H bonds, including 1-methylpyrrole, methane, benzyl, propylene, and benzene, in terms of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The reactivity of FLPs is evaluated according to the calculated reaction thermodynamic and energy barriers of C-H bond activation processes in the framework of concerted C-H activation mechanisms. As for 1-methylpyrrole, 14 types of N-B-based and 15 types of P-B-based FLPs are proposed to be active. Although none of the evaluated FLPs are able to catalyze the C-H activation of methane, benzyl, or propylene, four types of N-B-based FLPs are suggested to be capable of catalyzing the activation of benzene. Moreover, the influence of the strength of Lewis acid (LA) and Lewis base (LB), and the differences between the influences of LA and LB on the catalytic reactivity of FLPs, are also discussed briefly. This systematic assessment of the catalytic activity of FLPs should provide valuable guidelines to aid the development of efficient FLP-based metal-free catalysts for C-H bond activation.

Abstract
1-Boryl-8-phosphinonaphthalenes 1-BCy2-8-PCl2-C10H6 (1) and 1-BCy2-8-PPhCl-C10H6 (2) were prepared and used as starting materials for the synthesis of B-substituted phosphides. The reduction of 1 and 2 by Mg provided neutral compounds [1-BCy-8-PCy-C10H6]2 (3) and [1-BCy2-8-PPh-C10H6]2 (4). Compound 3 represents the dimer of phosphinoborane 1-BCy-8-PCy-C10H6 while complex 4 is a rare example of a discrete B ← P coordinated diphosphine. The reduction of 2 by Na or K in THF yielded B-substituted group 1 phosphides [Na(THF)3]+[1-BCy2-8-PPh-C10H6]- (5) and {[K(THF)2]+[1-BCy2-8-PPh-C10H6]-}∞ (6), which structurally resembled bulky group 1 phosphides. Complex 5 showed easy activation of elemental chalcogens E (E = O, S, Se) to give B-substituted chalcogenophosphinites {[Na(THF)2]+[1-BCy2-8-P(E)Ph-C10H6]}2 (E = O (7), S (8), Se (9)) as the products of chalcogen insertion into the P-Na bond. Importantly no oxidation to dichalcogenophosphinates was observed. Compound 5 is tolerant of the CO polar bonds in organic substrates and the reactions of 5 with 2,3-butanedione or an acyl chloride provided {[Na(THF)2]+[1-BCy2-8-P{CHC(O)C(Me)O}Ph-C10H6]-}2 (10) and [1-BCy2-8-P{C(O)tBu}Ph-C10H6] (11). Finally, B-coordinated phosphatetrylenes [1-BCy2-8-P(SnL)Ph-C10H6] (12) and [1-BCy2-8-P(PbL)Ph-C10H6] (13) (L is {2,6-(Me2NCH2)C6H3}-) were also prepared by substitution reactions of 5.

Abstract
We describe a novel gold chloride complex supported by an ambiphilic phosphine/xanthylium ligand in which the AuCl moiety interacts with the π+ surface of the xanthylium unit as indicated by structural studies. Energy decomposition analyses carried out on a model system indicates the prevalence of non-covalent interactions in which the electrostatic and dispersion terms cumulatively dominate. The presence of these AuCl-π+ interactions correlates with the high catalytic activity of this complex in the cyclisation of 2-(phenylethynyl)phenylboronic acid, N-propargyl-t-butylamide, and 2-allyl-2-(2-propynyl)malonate. Comparison with the significantly less active acridinium and the 9-oxa-10-boraanthracene analogues reinforces this conclusion.

Abstract
Noble gas atoms (Ng = He, Ne, Ar, and Kr) can be captured in silico with a light atom molecule containing only C, H, Si, O, and B atoms. Extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations on series of peri-substituted scaffolds indicate that confined spaces (voids) capable to energy efficiently encapsulate and bind Ng atoms are accessible by design of a tripodal peri-substituted ligand, namely, [(5-Ph2B-xan-4-)3Si]H (xan = xanthene) comprising (after hydride abstraction) four Lewis acidic sites within the cationic structure [(5-Ph2B-xan-4-)3Si]+. The host (ligand system) thereby provides an adoptive environment for the guest (Ng atom) to accommodate for its particular size. Whereas considerable chemical interactions are detectable between the ligand system and the heavier Ng atoms Kr and Ar in the host guest complex [(5-Ph2B-xan-4-)3Si·Ng]+, the lighter Ng atoms Ne and He are rather tolerated by the ligand system instead of being chemically bound to it, nicely highlighting the gradual onset of (weak) chemical bonding along the series He to Kr. A variety of real-space bonding indicators (RSBIs) derived from the calculated electron and pair densities provides valuable insight to the situation of an "isolated atom in a molecule" in case of He, uncovering its size and shape, whereas minute charge rearrangements caused by polarization of the outer electron shell of the larger Ng atoms results in formation of polarized interactions for Ar and Kr with non-negligible covalent bond contributions for Kr. The present study shows that noble gas atoms can be trapped by small light-atom molecules without the forceful conditions necessary using cage structures such as fullerenes, boranes and related compounds or by using super-electrophilic sites like [B12(CN)11]- if the chelating effect of several Lewis acidic sites within one molecule is employed.

Abstract
The NN triple bond can be cleaved in silico with a light atom molecule containing only the earth abundant elements C, H, Si, and P. Extensive density functional theory (DFT) computations on various classes of peri-substituted scaffolds containing Lewis acidic and basic sites in the framework of frustrated Lewis pairs (FLP) indicate that the presence of two silyl cations and two P atoms in a flexible but not too flexible arrangement is essential for energy efficient N2-activation. The non-bonding lone-pair electrons of the P atoms thereby serve as donors towards N2, whereas the lone-pairs of N2 donate into the silyl cations. Newly formed lone-pair basins in the N2-adducts balance surplus charge. Thereby, the N-N bond distance is increased by astonishing 0.3 Å, from 1.1 Å in N2 gas to 1.4 Å in the adduct, which makes this bond prone to subsequent addition of hydride ions and protonation, forming two secondary amine sites in the process and eventually breaking the NN triple bond. Potential formation of dead-end states, in which the dications ("active states") aversively form a Lewis acid (LA)-Lewis base (LB) bond, or in which the LA and LB sites are too far away from each other to be able to capture N2, are problematic but might be circumvented by proper choice of spacer molecules, such as acenaphthalene or biphenylene, and the ligands attached to the LA and LB atoms, such as phenyl or mesityl, and by purging the reaction solutions with gaseous N2 in the initial reaction steps. Charge redistributions via N2-activation and splitting were monitored by a variety of real-space bonding indicators (RSBIs) derived from the calculated electron and electron pair densities, which provided valuable insight into the bonding situation within the different reaction steps.

Abstract
Spectacular progress has recently been achieved in transition metal-catalyzed C-H borylation of phosphines as well as directed electrophilic C-H borylation. As shown here, P-directed electrophilic borylation provides a new, straightforward, and efficient access to phosphine-boranes. It operates under metal-free conditions and leverages simple, readily available substrates. It is applicable to a broad range of backbones (naphthyl, biphenyl, N-phenylpyrrole, binaphthyl, benzyl, naphthylmethyl) and gives facile access to various substitution patterns at boron (by varying the boron electrophile or post-derivatizing the borane moiety). NMR monitoring supports the involvement of P-stabilized borenium cations as key intermediates. DFT calculations reveal the existence and stabilizing effect of π-arene/boron interactions in the (biphenyl)(i-Pr)2 P→BBr2 + species.

Abstract
The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of mixed group 13/group 15 compounds (E13 = B, Al, Ga, In, Tl; E15 = N, P, Sb, Bi) featuring a rigid (ace)naphthalene or (thio)xanthene backbone are discussed in this review. The backbone may either enforce or prevent E15→E13 interactions, resulting in Lewis pairing or frustration. The formation of strong E15→E13 interactions is possible upon peri-substitution of (ace)naphthalenes. This gives the opportunity to access and study highly reactive species, as exemplified by P-stabilised borenium salts and boryl radicals. In turn, rigid expanded spacers such as biphenylenes, (thio)xanthenes and dibenzofurans impose long distances and geometrically prevent E15→E13 interactions. Such P-B derivatives display ambiphilic coordination properties and frustrated Lewis pair behaviour towards small molecules, their preorganised structure favouring reversible interaction/activation. Throughout the review, the importance of the scaffold in enforcing or preventing E15→E13 interactions is highlighted and discussed based on experimental data and theoretical calculations.

Abstract
The stabilizing neighboring effect of halo substituents on silyl cations was tested for a series of peri‐halo substituted acenaphthyl‐based silyl cations 3. The chloro‐ (3 b), bromo‐ (3 c), and iodo‐ (3 d) stabilized cations were synthesized by the Corey protocol. Structural and NMR spectroscopic investigations for cations 3 b–d supported by the results of density functional calculations, which indicate their halonium ion nature. According to the fluorobenzonitrile (FBN) method, the silyl Lewis acidity decreases along the series of halonium ions 3, the fluoronium ion 3 a being a very strong and the iodonium ion 3 d a moderate Lewis acid. Halonium ions 3 b and 3 c react with starting silanes in a substituent redistribution reaction and form siliconium ions 4 b and 4 c. The structure of siliconium borate 4 c2[B12Br12] reveals the trigonal bipyramidal coordination environment of the silicon atom with the two bromo substituents in the apical positions.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of the first parent phosphanylalane and phosphanylgallane stabilized only by a Lewis base (LB) are reported. The corresponding substituted compounds, such as IDipp⋅GaH2 PCy2 (1) (IDipp=1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene) were obtained by the reaction of LiPCy2 with IDipp⋅GaH2 Cl. However, the LB-stabilized parent compounds IDipp⋅GaH2 PH2 (3) and IDipp⋅AlH2 PH2 (4) were prepared via a salt metathesis of LiPH2 ⋅DME with IDipp⋅E'H2 Cl (E'=Ga, Al) or by H2 -elimination reactions of IDipp⋅E'H3 (E'=Ga, Al) and PH3 , respectively. The compounds could be isolated as crystalline solids and completely characterized. Supporting DFT computations gave insight into the reaction pathways as well as into the stability of these compounds with respect to their decomposition behavior.

Abstract
The synthesis and structures of the di- and triorgano antimony compounds (6-Ph2P-Ace-5-)2SbCl (1) and (6-Ph2P-Ace-5-)3Sb (2) are presented along with their use as coordination non-innocent ligands for transition metals, leading to the complexes Cl(6-Ph2P-Ace-5-)2SbCuCl (3), Cl2(6-Ph2P-Ace-5-)2SbPdCl (4), Cl2(6-Ph2P-Ace-5-)2SbPtCl (5) and Cl(6-Ph2P-Ace-5-)3SbRhCl (6). The electronic structures of 1-6 were investigated by DFT computations using a set of topological and surface-based real-space bonding indicators derived from the Atoms-In-Molecules (AIM), Non-Covalent interactions Index (NCI), and Electron Localizability Indicator (ELI-D) methods, unravelling a dative Sb-Cu bond character in 3 and polar-covalent Sb-Pd/Pt/Rh interactions in 4-6.

Abstract
The interactions between phosphines and boranes in crystal structures have been investigated by analyzing data from the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD). The interactions between phosphines and boranes were classified into three types; two types depend on groups on the boron atom, whereas the third one involves frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs). The data enabled geometric parameters in structures to be compared with phosphine-borane FLPs with classical Lewis pairs. Most of the crystal structures (78.1%) contain BH3 as the borane group. In these systems, the boron-phosphorus distance is shorter than systems where the boron atom is surrounded by groups other than hydrogen atoms. The analysis of the CSD data has shown that FLPs have a tendency for the longest boron-phosphorus distance among all phosphine-borane pairs, as well as different other geometrical parameters. The results show that most of the frustrated phosphine-borane pairs found in crystal structures are bridged ones. The minority of non-bridged FLP structures contain, beside phosphorus and boron atoms, other heteroatoms (O, N, S for instance).

Abstract
A series of naphthyl-bridged amino-borane derivatives, namely 1-(dimethylamino)-8-naphthylboranes (1, 3, 5, 7) and 5-(dimethylamino)-6-acenaphthylboranes (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 11), differing in the steric and electronic properties of the boryl moiety, have been synthesized and fully characterized by spectroscopic and crystallographic means. Structural X-ray analysis of the peri-atom displacement and ring torsion angles served to experimentally assess the presence and magnitude of the B-N interactions. The reversible quaternarization of nitrogen has been explored and was found to provide an efficient switch corresponding to different molecular organizations. The electronic characteristics of the nature of B-N interactions were further studied by Natural Bonding Orbital analysis derived from the theoretically calculated electron densities. This real-space bonding indicator discriminates the bonding B-N contact in 5 from the nonbonding in 8, which correlates with the flexibility of the naphthyl scaffold to respond to the Lewis acidity of boron allowing shorter peri interactions. Whereas, the steric shielding imposed by the two mesityl groups, and/or the rigidity of the acenaphthene framework disrupt B-N interaction. Thus, this communication reports on the modulation of the B-N bonding continuum by means of structural tuning leading to a molecular switch, as well as its implications towards revealing FLP reactivities through the isolation of intermediates of a stepwise mechanism.
