Tuning the emission lifetime in bis-cyclometalated iridium(III) complexes bearing iminopyrene ligands

Simultaneous quantification of Young's modulus and dispersion forces with nanoscale spatial resolution

Many advances in polymers and layered materials rely on a precise understanding of the local interactions between adjacent molecular or atomic layers. Quantifying dispersion forces at the nanoscale is particularly challenging with existing methods often time consuming, destructive, relying on surface averaging or requiring bespoke equipment. Here, we present a non-invasive method able to quantify the local mechanical and dispersion properties of a given sample with nanometer lateral precision. The method, based on atomic force microscopy (AFM), uses the frequency shift of a vibrating AFM cantilever in combination with established contact mechanics models to simultaneously derive the Hamaker constant and the effective Young's modulus at a given sample location. The derived Hamaker constant and Young's modulus represent an average over a small (typically <100) number of molecules or atoms. The oscillation amplitude of the vibrating AFM probe is used to select the length-scale of the features to analyse, with small vibrations able to resolve the contribution of sub-nanometric defects and large ones exploring effectively homogeneous areas. The accuracy of the method is validated on a range of 2D materials in air and water as well as on polymer thin films. We also provide the first experimental measurements of the Hamaker constant of HBN, MoT2, WSe2and polymer films, verifying theoretical predictions and computer simulations. The simplicity and robustness of the method, implemented with a commercial AFM, may support a broad range of technological applications in the growing field of polymers and nanostructured materials where a fine control of the van der Waals interactions is crucial to tune their properties.

Bichromophoric Photosensitizers: How and Where to Attach Pyrene Moieties to Phenanthroline to Generate Copper(I) Complexes

Pyrene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon and organic dye that can form superior bichromophoric systems when combined with a transition metal-based chromophore. However, little is known about the effect of the type of attachment (i.e., 1- vs 2-pyrenyl) and the individual position of the pyrenyl substituents at the ligand. Therefore, a systematic series of three novel diimine ligands and their respective heteroleptic diimine-diphosphine copper(I) complexes has been designed and extensively studied. Special attention was given to two different substitution strategies: (i) attaching pyrene via its 1-position, which occurs most frequently in the literature, or via its 2-position and (ii) targeting two contrasting substitution patterns at the 1,10-phenanthroline ligand, i.e., the 5,6- and the 4,7-position. In the applied spectroscopic, electrochemical, and theoretical methods (UV/vis, emission, time-resolved luminescence and transient absorption, cyclic voltammetry, density functional theory), it has been shown that the precise choice of the derivatization sites is crucial. Substituting the pyridine rings of phenanthroline in the 4,7-position with the 1-pyrenyl moiety has the strongest impact on the bichromophore. This approach results in the most anodically shifted reduction potential and a drastic increase in the excited state lifetime by more than two orders of magnitude. In addition, it enables the highest singlet oxygen quantum yield of 96% and the most beneficial activity in the photocatalytic oxidation of 1,5-dihydroxy-naphthalene.

Comprehensive Insights into Medicinal Research on Imidazole-Based Supramolecular Complexes

The electron-rich five-membered aromatic aza-heterocyclic imidazole, which contains two nitrogen atoms, is an important functional fragment widely present in a large number of biomolecules and medicinal drugs; its unique structure is beneficial to easily bind with various inorganic or organic ions and molecules through noncovalent interactions to form a variety of supramolecular complexes with broad medicinal potential, which is being paid an increasing amount of attention regarding more and more contributions to imidazole-based supramolecular complexes for possible medicinal application. This work gives systematical and comprehensive insights into medicinal research on imidazole-based supramolecular complexes, including anticancer, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antidiabetic, antihypertensive, and anti-inflammatory aspects as well as ion receptors, imaging agents, and pathologic probes. The new trend of the foreseeable research in the near future toward imidazole-based supramolecular medicinal chemistry is also prospected. It is hoped that this work provides beneficial help for the rational design of imidazole-based drug molecules and supramolecular medicinal agents and more effective diagnostic agents and pathological probes.

Boosting CO2 photoreduction by π-π-induced preassembly between a Cu(I) sensitizer and a pyrene-appended Co(II) catalyst

The design of a highly efficient system for CO2 photoreduction fully based on earth-abundant elements presents a challenge, which may be overcome by installing suitable interactions between photosensitizer and catalyst to expedite the intermolecular electron transfer. Herein, we have designed a pyrene-decorated Cu(I) complex with a rare dual emission behavior, aiming at additional π-interaction with a pyrene-appended Co(II) catalyst for visible light-driven CO2-to-CO conversion. The results of 1H NMR titration, time-resolved fluorescence/absorption spectroscopies, quantum chemical simulations, and photocatalytic experiments clearly demonstrate that the dynamic π-π interaction between sensitizer and catalyst is highly advantageous in photocatalysis by accelerating the intermolecular electron transfer rate up to 6.9 × 105 s-1, thus achieving a notable apparent quantum yield of 19% at 425 nm with near-unity selectivity. While comparable to most earth-abundant molecular systems, this value is over three times of the pyrene-free system (6.0%) and far surpassing the benchmarking Ru(II) tris(bipyridine) (0.3%) and Ir(III) tris(2-phenylpyridine) (1.4%) photosensitizers under parallel conditions.

Tuning Emission Lifetimes of Ir(C^N)2(acac) Complexes with Oligo(phenyleneethynylene) Groups

Emissive compounds with long emission lifetimes (μs to ms) in the visible region are of interest for a range of applications, from oxygen sensing to cellular imaging. The emission behavior of Ir(ppy)₂(acac) complexes (where ppy is the 2-phenylpyridyl chelate and acac is the acetylacetonate chelate) with an oligo(para-phenyleneethynylene) (OPE3) motif containing three para-rings and two ethynyl bridges attached to acac or ppy is examined here due to the accessibility of the long-lived OPE3 triplet states. Nine Ir(ppy)₂(acac) complexes with OPE3 units are synthesized where the OPE3 motif is at the acac moiety (aOPE3), incorporated in the ppy chelate (pOPE3) or attached to ppy via a durylene link (dOPE3). The aOPE3 and dOPE3 complexes contain OPE3 units that are decoupled from the Ir(ppy)₂(acac) core by adopting perpendicular ring-ring orientations, whereas the pOPE3 complexes have OPE3 integrated into the ppy ligand to maximize electronic coupling with the Ir(ppy)₂(acac) core. While the conjugated pOPE3 complexes show emission lifetimes of 0.69-32.8 μs similar to the lifetimes of 1.00-23.1 μs for the non-OPE3 Ir(ppy)₂(acac) complexes synthesized here, the decoupled aOPE3 and dOPE3 complexes reveal long emission lifetimes of 50-625 μs. The long lifetimes found in aOPE3 and dOPE3 complexes are due to intramolecular reversible electronic energy transfer (REET) where the long-lived triplet-state metal to ligand charge transfer (³MLCT) states exchange via REET with the even longer-lived triplet-state localized OPE3 states. The proposed REET process is supported by changes observed in excitation wavelength-dependent and time-dependent emission spectra from aOPE3 and dOPE3 complexes, whereas emission spectra from pOPE3 complexes remain independent of the excitation wavelength and time due to the well-established ³MLCT states of many Ir(ppy)₂(acac) complexes. The long lifetimes, visible emission maxima (524-526 nm), and photoluminescent quantum yields of 0.44-0.60 for the dOPE3 complexes indicate the possibility of utilizing such compounds in oxygen-sensing and cellular imaging applications.

Post-complexation Functionalization of Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes and Applications to Biomedical and Material Sciences

Cyclometalated iridium(III) (Ir(III)) complexes exhibit excellent photophysical properties that include large Stokes shift, high emission quantum yields, and microsecond-order emission lifetimes, due to low-lying metal-to-ligand charge transfer (spin-forbidden singlet-triplet (³MLCT) transition). As a result, analogs have been applied for research not only in the material sciences, such as the development of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs), but also for photocatalysts, bioimaging probes, and anticancer reagents. Although a variety of methods for the synthesis and the applications of functionalized cyclometalated iridium complexes have been reported, functional groups are generally introduced to the ligands prior to the complexation with Ir salts. Therefore, it is difficult to introduce thermally unstable functional groups such as peptides and sugars due to the harsh reaction conditions such as the high temperatures used in the complexation with Ir salts. In this review, the functionalization of Ir complexes after the formation of cyclometalated Ir complexes and their biological and material applications are described. These methods are referred to as "post-complexation functionalization (PCF)." In this review, applications of PCF to the design and synthesis of Ir(III) complexes that exhibit blue -red and white color emissions, luminescence pH probes, luminescent probes of cancer cells, compounds that induce cell death in cancer cells, and luminescent complexes that have long emission lifetimes are summarized.

Co-facial π-π Interaction Expedites Sensitizer-to-Catalyst Electron Transfer for High-Performance CO2 Photoreduction

The sunlight-driven reduction of CO₂ into carbonaceous fuels can lower the atmospheric CO₂ concentration and provide renewable energy simultaneously, attracting scientists to design photocatalytic systems for facilitating this process. Significant progress has been made in designing high-performance photosensitizers and catalysts in this regard, and further improvement can be realized by installing additional interactions between the abovementioned two components, however, the design strategies and mechanistic investigations on such interactions remain challenging. Here, we present the construction of molecular models for intermolecular π-π interactions between the photosensitizer and the catalyst, via the introduction of pyrene groups into both molecular components. The presence, types, and strengths of diverse π-π interactions, as well as their roles in the photocatalytic mechanism, have been examined by ¹H NMR titration, fluorescence quenching measurements, transient absorption spectroscopy, and quantum chemical simulations. We have also explored the rare dual emission behavior of the pyrene-appended iridium photosensitizer, of which the excited state can deliver the photo-excited electron to the pyrene-decorated cobalt catalyst at a fast rate of 2.60 × 10⁶ s^-1 via co-facial π-π interaction, enabling a remarkable apparent quantum efficiency of 14.3 ± 0.8% at 425 nm and a high selectivity of 98% for the photocatalytic CO₂-to-CO conversion. This research demonstrates non-covalent interaction construction as an effective strategy to achieve rapid CO₂ photoreduction besides a conventional photosensitizer/catalyst design.

Solvent-modulated proton-coupled electron transfer in an iridium complex with an ESIPT ligand

Proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), an essential process in nature with a well-known example of photosynthesis, has recently been employed in metal complexes to improve the energy conversion efficiency; however, a profound understanding of the mechanism of PCET in metal complexes is still lacking. In this study, we synthesized cyclometalated Ir complexes strategically designed to exploit the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) of the ancillary ligand and studied their photoinduced PCET in both aprotic and protic solvent environments using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations. The data reveal solvent-modulated PCET, where charge transfer follows proton transfer in an aprotic solvent and the temporal order of charge transfer and proton transfer is reversed in a protic solvent. In the former case, ESIPT from the enol form to the keto form, which precedes the charge transfer from Ir to the ESIPT ligand, improves the efficiency of metal-to-ligand charge transfer. This finding demonstrates the potential to control the PCET reaction in the desired direction and the efficiency of charge transfer by simply perturbing the external hydrogen-bonding network with the solvent.

Investigation on Optical and Biological Properties of 2-(4-Dimethylaminophenyl)benzothiazole Based Cycloplatinated Complexes

The optical and biological properties of 2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)benzothiazole cycloplatinated complexes featuring bioactive ligands ([{Pt(Me 2 N-pbt)(C 6 F 5 )}L] [L = Me 2 N-pbtH 1 , p -dpbH (4-(diphenylphosphino)benzoic acid) 2 , o -dpbH (2-(diphenylphosphino)benzoic acid) 3) , [Pt(Me 2 N-pbt)( o -dpb)] 4 ,  [{Pt(Me 2 N-pbt)(C 6 F 5 )} 2 (µ-PR n P)] [PR 4 P = O(CH 2 CH 2 OC(O)C 6 H 4 PPh 2 ) 2 5 , PR 12 P = O{(CH 2 CH 2 O) 3 C(O)C 6 H 4 PPh 2 } 2 6 ] are presented. Complexes 1-6 display 1 ILCT and metal perturbed 3 ILCT dual emissions. The ratio between both bands is excitation dependent, accomplishing warm-white emissions for 2 , 5 and 6 .  The phosphorescent emission is lost in aerated solutions owing to photoinduced electron transfer to 3 O 2 and formation of 1 O 2 , as confirmed in complexes 2 and 4 . They also exhibit photoinduced phosphorescence enhancement in non-degassed DMSO, due to local oxidation of DMSO by sensitized 1 O 2 , which causes a local degassing. Me 2 N-pbtH and the complexes exhibit specific accumulation in the Golgi apparatus although only 2 , 3 and 6 were active against A549 and HeLa cancer cell lines, being 6 highly selective respect to nontumoral cells. The potential photodynamic property of these complexes was demonstrated with complex 4 .

Ultrafast excited state relaxation dynamics in a heteroleptic Ir(iii) complex, fac-Ir(ppy)2(ppz), revealed by femtosecond X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy

The experimental and calculation results demonstrate that the ³ML_ppzCT state generated by the spin-forbidden transition rapidly relaxes to ³ML_ppyCT through internal conversion process with a time constant of ∼450 fs.

Design and Synthesis of Cyclometalated Iridium(III) Complexes-Chromophore Hybrids that Exhibit Long-Emission Lifetimes Based on a Reversible Electronic Energy Transfer Mechanism

We report on the design and synthesis of triscyclometalated iridium (Ir) complexes that contain aryloxy groups at the end of diamino linkers, which exhibit an extraordinarily long-emission lifetime, and were prepared by regioselective substitution reactions of fac-tris-homoleptic cyclometalated Ir complexes, fac-Ir(tpy)₃ (tpy = 2-(4'-tolyl)pyridine). It was found that the Ir(tpy)₃ complex, equipped with approximately one to six 6-N,N-dimethylamino-2-naphthoic acid (DMANA) groups through the appropriate alkyl linkers, exhibited remarkably long-emission lifetimes of up to 216 μs in DMSO/H₂O at room temperature through a reversible electronic energy transfer effect between the Ir complex core and the organic chromophore moieties; however, under the same conditions, the lifetime of fac-Ir(tpy)₃ was 1.4 μs. Regarding the mechanistic aspects, the relationship between the emission lifetimes of the Ir complexes and the structures and numbers of the conjugated chromophores, linker lengths, solvents, positions of the chromophores on the Ir(tpy)₃ core, and related items are discussed.

Exploration of the Structural and Photophysical Characteristics of Mono- and Binuclear Ir(III) Cyclometalated Complexes for Optoelectronic Applications

Intrinsic characteristics possessed and exhibited by Ir(III) cyclometalated complexes need to be further examined, understood, and explored for greater value enhancement and potentiation. This work focuses primarily on the comparative studies of the ligand structures, types, and their substituent influence on the photophysical and optoelectronic properties of typical cyclometalated mono- and binuclear iridium(III) complexes in solution or solid states.

Mitochondria-targeted spin-labelled luminescent iridium anticancer complexes

Mitochondria generate energy but malfunction in many cancer cells, hence targeting mitochondrial metabolism is a promising approach for cancer therapy. Here we have designed cyclometallated iridium(iii) complexes, containing one TEMPO (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl) spin label [C43H43N6O2Ir1·PF6]˙ (Ir-TEMPO1) and two TEMPO spin labels [C52H58N8O4Ir1·PF6]˙ (Ir-TEMPO2). Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy revealed spin-spin interactions between the TEMPO units in Ir-TEMPO2. Both Ir-TEMPO1 and Ir-TEMPO2 showed bright luminescence with long lifetimes (ca. 35-160 ns); while Ir-TEMPO1 displayed monoexponential decay kinetics, the biexponential decays measured for Ir-TEMPO2 indicated the presence of more than one energetically-accessible conformation. This observation was further supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The antiproliferative activity of Ir-TEMPO2 towards a range of cancer cells was much greater than that of Ir-TEMPO1, and also the antioxidant activity of Ir-TEMPO2 is much higher against A2780 ovarian cancer cells when compared with Ir-TEMPO1. Most notably Ir-TEMPO2 was particularly potent towards PC3 human prostate cancer cells (IC50 = 0.53 μM), being ca. 8× more active than the clinical drug cisplatin, and ca. 15× more selective towards cancer cells versus normal cells. Confocal microscopy showed that both Ir-TEMPO1 and Ir-TEMPO2 localise in the mitochondria of cancer cells.

Fluorinated cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes as mitochondria-targeted theranostic anticancer agents

Cyclometalated iridium(iii) complexes bearing different numbers of fluorine atoms were developed to induce apoptosis via mitochondrial pathways and demonstrated much better anticancer activities than the widely used clinical chemotherapeutic agent cisplatin.

Harnessing Reversible Electronic Energy Transfer: From Molecular Dyads to Molecular Machines

Reversible electronic energy transfer (REET) may be instilled in bi-/multichromophoric molecule-based systems, following photoexcitation, upon judicious structural integration of matched chromophores. This leads to a new set of photophysical properties for the ensemble, which can be fully characterized by steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic methods. Herein, we take a comprehensive look at progress in the development of this type of supermolecule in the last five years, which has seen systems evolve from covalently tethered dyads to synthetic molecular machines, exemplified by two different pseudorotaxanes. Indeed, REET holds promise in the control of movement in molecular machines, their assembly/disassembly, as well as in charge separation.

Chromophore-labelled, luminescent platinum complexes: syntheses, structures, and spectroscopic properties

Ligands based upon 4-carboxamide-2-phenylquinoline have been functionalised with naphthyl, anthracenyl and pyrenyl chromophores. The pyrene appended Pt(ii) complex shows excited state equilibration and a long emission lifetime.
