Abstract
A range of protic ionic liquids (PILs) based on tri-n-alkylammonium cations and mesylate/triflate anions were incorporated into a polymer matrix to form ionogels (IGs). These systems were investigated for their thermal and electrochemical behaviour, as well as under the aspect of ion motion via PFG-NMR. The ionic conductivities of the ILs/IGs are in the range of 10-4-10-3 S/cm-1 at elevated temperatures and the diffusion coefficients are around 10-11 m2 s-1. Successful 3D printing of an IG with 70 wt % of IL is possible via stereolithography approaches, opening up applications in, e. g., structured ion-conductive membranes.

Abstract
Excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) reactions of 5-cyano-2-naphthol (5CN2) and 5,8-dicyano-2-naphthol (DCN2) were investigated in protic ionic liquids (PILs) composed of quaternary ammonium (NnnnH+) (n = 2, 4, or 8) and hexanoate (C5H11COO-) using time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy. The effects of the number of alkyl carbons in the cation and the basicity of the anion on the reaction yield and dynamics were examined. In a series of [NnnnH][C5H11COO], fluorescence from the hydrogen-bonding complex (AHBX-*) of a proton-dissociated form (RO-*) with a solvent acid in the electronic excited state was observed between the fluorescence bands of an acidic form (ROH*) and an anionic form (RO-*) as in the case of [N222H][CF3COO] (Fujii et al., J. Phys. Chem B, 2017, 121, 6042). The yield, formation rate, and decay rate of AHBX-* were assessed by the steady-state fluorescence intensity ratio of AHBX-* to RO-* and by analysis of the time-resolved fluorescence spectra within several tens of nanoseconds. The stability of AHBX-* was significantly different from that in [N222H][CF3COO] and depended on the number of alkyl carbons in the cation. The formation of AHBX-* was quite fast compared to the case in [N222H][CF3COO] and almost close to the excitation pulse width. Excitation wavelength dependence of the fluorescence dynamics was observed within several hundred picoseconds for the series of [NnnnH][C5H11COO]. The origin was ascribed to the complex with solvent IL formed in the electronic ground state, as suggested by the density-functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
Ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) combine the ion mobility of ionic liquids with the order and self-assembly of thermotropic mesophases. To understand the role of the anion in ILCs, wedge-shaped arylguanidinium salts with tetradecyloxy side chains were chosen as benchmark systems and their liquid crystalline self-assembly in the bulk phase as well as their electrochemical behavior in solution were studied depending on the anion. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarizing optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (WAXS, SAXS) experiments revealed that for spherical anions, the phase width of the hexagonal columnar mesophase increased with the anion size, while for non-spherical anions, the trends were less clear cut. Depending on the anion, the ILCs showed different stability towards electrochemical oxidation and reduction with the most stable being the PF6 based compound. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations suggest a possible contribution of the guanidinium cation to the oxidation processes.

Abstract
In the present work, different methanesulfonate-based protic ionic liquids (PILs) were synthesized and their structural characterization was performed using FTIR, 1H, and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Their thermal behavior and stability were studied using DSC and TGA, respectively, and EIS was used to study the ionic conductivity of these PILs. The PIL, which was diethanolammonium-methanesulfonate-based due to its compatibility with polybenzimidazole (PBI) to form composite membranes, was used to prepare proton-conducting polymer electrolyte membranes (PEMs) for prospective high-temperature fuel cell application. The prepared PEMs were further characterized using FTIR, DSC, TGA, SEM, and EIS. The FTIR results indicated good interaction among the PEM components and the DSC results suggested good miscibility and a plasticizing effect of the incorporated PIL in the PBI polymer matrix. All the PEMs showed good thermal stability and good proton conductivity for prospective high-temperature fuel cell application.

Abstract
Dual-conducting polymer films were synthesized by dispersing graphene in an aqueous solution of poly(vinyl alcohol) and 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([C3mim]I) ionic liquid and thermally converting the poly(vinyl alcohol) to polyene in the presence of hydroiodic acid catalyst. The electrical and mechanical properties of the resulting free-standing films of the nanocomposite, containing different concentrations of graphene, were analyzed using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), respectively. Nyquist plots (imaginary vs real components of the frequency-dependent impedance) showed two characteristic arcs representing the composite's electronic and ionic conduction pathways. The conductivity values corresponding to both charge transport mechanisms increased with temperature and the graphene concentration. The enhancement in electronic conductivity is expected because of graphene's high electron mobility. Interestingly, ionic conductivity also showed a significant increase with graphene concentration, approximately triple the extent of the rise in the electronic conductivity, even though the loss and storage moduli of the films increased. (Generally, a higher modulus results in lower ionic conductivities in ionic gels.) Molecular dynamics simulations of the three-component system provided some insights into this unusual behavior. Mean square displacement data showed that the diffusion of the iodide anions was relatively isotropic. The iodide diffusion coefficient was higher in a blend with 5 vol % graphene than in blends with 3 vol % graphene or no graphene. The improvement is attributed to the interfacial effects of the graphene on the free volume of the blend. Furthermore, an exclusion of the iodide ions from the vicinity of graphene was observed in the radial distribution function analysis. The increase in the effective concentration of iodide due to this exclusion and the increase in its diffusion coefficient because of the excess free volume are the primary reasons for the observed enhancement in ionic conductivity by adding graphene.

Abstract
We focus on a series of protic ionic liquids (PILs) with imidazolium and alkylimidazolium (1R3HIm, R = methyl, ethyl, propyl, and butyl) cations. Using the literature data and our experimental results on the thermal and transport properties, we analyze the effects of the anion nature and the alkyl radical length in the cation structure on the above properties. DFT calculations in gas and solvent phase have resulted in microscopic insights into the structure and cation-anion binding in these PILs. We show that the higher thermodynamic stability of an ion pair raises the PIL decomposition temperature. The melting points of the salts with the same cation decrease as the hydrocarbon radical in the cation becomes longer, which correlates with the weaker ion-ion interaction in the ion pairs. A comparative analysis of the protic ILs and corresponding ILs (1R3MeIm) with the same radical (R) in the cation structure and the same anion has been performed. The lower melting points of the ILs with 1R3MeIm cations are assumed to result from the weakening both of the ion-ion interaction and hydrogen bond.

Abstract
The protic ionic liquid diethylmethylammonium methanesulfonate ([DEMA][OMs]) was analyzed in depth by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) under anhydrous conditions. Karl Fischer titration, NMR, and FT-IR spectra confirmed the high purity of [DEMA][OMs]. The melting point (37.7 °C) and the freezing point (14.0 °C) obtained by DSC agree well with the values determined by BDS (40.0 °C and 14.0 °C). The dc conductivity (σdc) above the melting/freezing point obeys the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann (VFT) equation well, and thus, the proton conduction in [DEMA][OMs] is assumed to be dominated by the vehicle mechanism. In contrast, the σdc below the melting/freezing point can be fitted by the Arrhenius equation separately, and therefore, the proton conduction is most likely governed by the proton hopping mechanism. The non-negligible influence of previously reported low water content on the physicochemical properties of [DEMA][OMs] is found, indicating the importance of reducing water content as much as possible for the study of "intrinsic" properties of protic ionic liquids.

Abstract
Nonvolatile and nonflammable ionic liquids (ILs) have distinct thermal advantages over the traditional organic solvent electrolytes of lithium ion batteries. However, this beneficial feature of ILs is often counterbalanced by their high viscosity (a limiting factor for ionic conductivity) and, sometimes, by their unsuitable electrochemistry for generating protective layers on electrode surfaces. In an effort to alleviate these limiting aspects of ILs, we have synthesized a PEGylated imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide (bistriflamide) IL that exhibited better thermal and electrochemical stability than a conventional electrolyte based on a blend of ethylene carbonate and diethyl carbonate. The electrochemical performance of this IL has been demonstrated using a cathode consisting of ball-milled LiMn2O4 particles. A direct comparison of the ionic liquid electrolyte with the nonionic low-viscosity conventional solvent blend is presented.
