Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquids as Modulators of Physicochemical Properties and Nanostructures of CTAB in Aqueous Solution: The Effect of Alkyl Chain Length, Hydrogen Bonding Capacity, and Anion Type

Optimizing the method for removing MSNs templates using an ionic liquid ([C4mim]Cl)

The key step in preparing mesoporous silica is to remove the organic template agent, and the most common method used to achieve this goal is high-temperature calcination. However, this method has many disadvantages, one of which is that it reduces the silanol density on the surface of mesoporous silica, which affects its subsequent modification. Ionic liquids (ILs) are often used as extractants. In this work, the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4mim]Cl) IL is considered, and the effects of its concentration, reaction temperature, and reaction time as well as HCl concentration on the extraction rate and silanol density were investigated using an IL extraction template agent (cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)). The results show that an IL concentration of 10%, a reaction temperature of 120 °C, a reaction time of 12 h, and an HCl concentration of 1% are the best reaction parameters; with these parameters, the extraction rate and the silanol density were found to be 93.19% and 2.23%, respectively. The silanol density of mesoporous silica treated by calcination is only 0.81%. A higher silanol density provides more reaction sites, so that the modified mesoporous silica treated with the IL can be loaded with more Zn ions.

Biobased natural deep eutectic system as versatile solvents: Structure, interaction and advanced applications

The increasing emphasis on the development of green replacements to traditional organic solvents and ionic liquids (ILs) can be attributed to the rising concerns over human health and detrimental impacts of conventional solvents towards the environment. A new generation of solvents inspired by nature and extracted from plant bioresources has evolved over the last few years, and are referred to as natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES). NADES are mixtures of natural constituents like sugars, polyalcohols, sugar-based alcohols, amino acids and organic acids. Interest in NADES has exponentially grown over the last eight years, which is evident from an upsurge in the number of research projects undertaken. NADES are highly biocompatible as they can be biosynthesized and metabolized by nearly all living organisms. These solvents pose several noteworthy advantages, such as easy synthesis, tuneable physico-chemical properties, low toxicity, high biodegradability, solute sustainability and stabilization and low melting point. Research on the applicability of NADES in diverse areas is gaining momentum, which includes as - media for chemical and enzymatic reactions; extraction media for essential oils; anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent; extraction of bioactive composites; as chromatographic media; preservatives for labile compounds and in drug synthesis. This review gives a complete overview of the properties, biodegradability and toxicity of NADES which we propose can assist in further knowledge generation on their significance in biological systems and usage in green and sustainable chemistry. Information on applications of NADES in biomedical, therapeutic and pharma-biotechnology fields is also highlighted in the current article along with the recent progress and future perspectives in novel applications of NADES.

Mixed Micellization and Spectroscopic Studies of Anti-Allergic Drug and Non-Ionic Surfactant in the Presence of Ionic Liquid

In drug delivery, surfactants are used to reduce side effects and to increase drug efficiency. The present work aimed to study the interaction of diphenhydramine hydrochloride (anti-allergic drug) with TX–45 (non-ionic surfactant) in the absence and presence of ionic liquid (1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride). The physicochemical parameters were estimated by the surface tension measurement. Various theoretical models (Clint, Rubingh, Motomura, and Maeda) were applied to determine the attractive behavior between drug and surfactant mixtures at the surface and in bulk. The drug and surfactant mixtures exhibit synergistic behavior in the absence and presence of ionic liquid. Several energetic parameters were also estimated with the assistance of regular solution approximation and pseudo phase separation model that indicate micelle formation and adsorption of surfactant at the surface is thermodynamically advantageous. The morphology of pure and mixture of amphiphiles has been estimated by the Tanford and Israelachvili theories. UV-visible spectroscopy was used to quantify the attractive behavior of the drug with surfactant with the help of a binding constant (K).

Interfacial and Micellization Behavior of Cetyltrimethylammonium Bromide (CTAB) in Water and Methanol-Water Mixture at 298.15 to 323.15 K

The micellization behavior of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) in water , 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 volume fractions of methanol at 298.15, 308.15, 318.15, and 323.15 K were investigated by surface tension measurements. The effect of methanol on values of critical micelle concentration (cmc), free energies of micellization ΔGmo, and surface properties viz. maximum surface excess concentration Γmax, area occupied by per surfactant molecule Amin, surface pressure πcmc, solution surface tension γcmc, solvent surface tension (γo), free energies of adsorption ΔGadso, the efficiency of adsorption (pC20), effective Gibbs free energy ΔGeffo, and free energy of surface at equilibrium (Gmin) were investigated using surface tension values. Other parameters such as the packing parameter (P), aggregation number (N), concentration of surfactant in the bulk phase (C20), relation between Amin and πcmc, and correlation of slopes dγ/d log C, γo/γcmc, Γ/Γmax, cmc/C20, ΔGadso/ΔGmo, and cmc/pC20 with the volume fraction of methanol are calculated and discussed in the light of the experiment done.

Impact of some pyrrolidinium ionic liquids on copper dissolution behavior in acidic environment: experimental, morphological and theoretical insights

The inhibitive and adsorption activity of some pyrrolidinium ionic liquids (ILs) for the dissolution of copper in 1 M HNO3 solution was tested using chemical methods such as weight loss and electrochemical techniques; potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and electrical frequency modulation (EFM) techniques. The results indicated that the ionic liquids under investigation exhibited promising corrosion inhibitory performance in 1 M HNO3 and their efficiencies reached up to 85% at 0.05 mM. Also, an enhancement in the inhibition efficiency (% IE) accompanied the increase in inhibitor concentration. The polarization measurements suggested that these ionic liquid inhibitors act as mixed-type inhibitors. The adsorption of the ionic liquid inhibitors on the copper surface obey the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Thermodynamic parameters were calculated and discussed. The surface morphology of the copper surface was examined using different techniques. Correlation between the calculated % IE from experiments and some quantum chemical parameters was established.

Synthesis of Polylysine/Silica Hybrids through Branched-Polylysine-Mediated Biosilicification

Although many biosilicification methods based on cationic linear α-poly -l- lysine for synthesis of polylysine/silica hybrids have been investigated, these methods tend to rely on the counteranions, added catalysts, and complex synthesis process. To explore a simple and efficient biosilicification method, in this work, branched poly-l-lysine (BPL) is used as both a catalyst to hydrolyze tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and an in situ template to direct silicic acids forming polylysine/silica hybrids in one-pot mode. The catalysis of BPL to hydrolyze TEOS results from the abundant hydrogen bonding (as the active site) to increase the nucleophilicity of BPL. Meanwhile, the hydrogen bonding is also found to be the key factor determining the self-assembly of BPL. During biosilicification, owing to self-assembly of BPL molecules, BPL would form spherical particles by keeping a random-coil conformation or form lamellar structures by undergoing a conformational transition from a random-coil to β-sheet construction. As a result, polylysine/silica hybrids with tunable topological structures are synthesized using aggregated BPLs as templates after the hydrolysis of TEOS. This finding of applying BPL to fulfill the biosilicification procedure without counteranions and added catalysts would enable a better understanding of the polypeptide-governed biosilicification process and pave a way for fabricating complex inorganic architectures applicable to silica transformational chemistry.

Self-assembled switching gels with multiresponsivity and chirality

A multiresponsive hydrogel material consisting of a commercial cationic surfactant and an azobenzene derivative functionalized with four carboxylic acid groups was constructed. The achiral azobenzene molecule as a gelator produces chirality at the supramolecular level in the presence of H(+). The acid-induced gelation and morphology change of supramolecular gels were investigated in detail by cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM), rheological measurements, circular dichroism (CD), and (1)H NMR spectra. Based on the results, a mechanism of the intermolecular H-bond-directed gelation and supramolecular chirality was proposed. Other than the pH sensitivity, the microstructure and the chirality of the hydrogel demonstrate reversible switching behavior in response to photoirradiation, on account of the photoisomerization of the azobenzene derivative. Accordingly, a chiroptical switch comprising four different states in response to pH and light stimuli is strategically constructed. Not only does the present system provide a good opportunity for investigating the gelation-induced supramolecular chirality by symmetry breaking totally based on achiral molecules, but it also proposes a new strategy to build multiresponsive supramolecular switches as particularly attractive for the future development of functional materials.
