Abstract
Diels-Alder cycloaddition of s-trans-1,3-butadiene (1) should yield trans-cyclohexene (7), just as reaction of the s-cis conformer gives cis-cyclohexene (9). Investigation of this long-overlooked process with Hartree-Fock, Moller-Plesset, CASSCF, and DFT methods yielded in every case a C(2)-symmetric concerted transition state. At the B3LYP/6-31G (+ZPVE) level, this structure is predicted to be 42.6 kcal/mol above reactants, while the overall reaction is endothermic by 16.7 kcal/mol. A stepwise diradical process has been studied by UBLYP/6-31G theory and found to have barriers of 35.5 and 17.7 kcal/mol for the two steps. Spin correction lowers these values to 30.1 and 13.0 kcal/mol. The barrier to pi-bond rotation in cis-cyclohexene (9) is predicted (B3LYP theory) to be 62.4 kcal/mol, with trans-cyclohexene (7) lying 53.3 kcal/mol above cis isomer 9. Results suggest that pi-bond isomerization and concerted reaction may provide competitive routes for Diels-Alder cycloreversion. It is concluded that full understanding of the Diels-Alder reaction requires consideration of both conformers of 1,3-butadiene.

Abstract
Energies and lifetimes of triplet states of a series of 2-cyclohexenones have been measured in solution under ambient conditions by time-resolved photoacoustic calorimetry (PAC). The PAC triplet lifetimes are in excellent agreement with lifetimes measured by kinetic absorption spectrophotometry (KAS) using nanosecond flash techniques, indicating that the present data indeed pertain to the enone triplets previously studied using KAS. The data demonstrate that, as previously proposed, the pi pi triplet energies in these systems are indeed correlated with triplet lifetimes, and vary sensibly with the anticipated extent of conformational flexibility of the C = C bond. No evidence supporting formation of metastable trans-cyclohexenones was obtained. The data also demonstrate greater precision and, for lifetimes, greater accuracy than has hitherto been claimed for the PAC technique for study of transients with lifetimes in the 25 ns range.

Abstract
Time-resolved photoacoustic calorimetry is a new experimental technique that measures the dynamics of enthalpy changes on the time scale of nanoseconds to microseconds for reactions initiated by absorption of light. When the reaction is carried out in water, it is also possible to obtain the dynamics of the corresponding volume changes. This method has been applied to a variety of biochemical, organic, and organometallic reactions.

Abstract
The dynamics of the enthalpy and volume changes produced in the photodissociation of carbon monoxide from sperm whale myoglobin is investigated by time-resolved photoacoustic calorimetry. The enthalpy and volume changes for the formation of the geminate pair, which occurs within 50 ns of photolysis, are delta H = -2.2 +/- 2.8 kcal/mol and delta V = -10.0 +/- 1.0 mL/mol relative to carboxymyoglobin. The enthalpy and volume changes associated with formation of deoxymyoglobin and solvated carbon monoxide, formed with a half-life of 702 +/- 31 ns at 20 degrees C, are delta H = 14.6 +/- 3.4 kcal/mol and delta V = 5.8 +/- 1.0 mL/mol relative to carboxymyoglobin.
