Abstract
End-on binding of dinitrogen to low valent metal centres is common in transition metal chemistry but remains extremely rare in f-elements chemistry. In particular, heterobimetallic end-on N2 bridged complexes of lanthanides are unprecedented despite their potential relevance in catalytic reduction of dinitrogen. Here we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of N2 bridged heterobimetallic complexes of U(iii), Ln(iii) and Ln(ii) which were prepared by reacting the Fe dinitrogen complex [Fe(depe)2(N2)] (depe = 1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)-ethane), complex A with [MIII{N(SiMe3)2}3] (M = U, Ce, Sm, Dy, Tm) and [LnII{N(SiMe3)2}2], (Ln = Sm, Yb). Despite the lack of reactivity of the U(iii), Ln(iii) and Ln(ii) amide complexes with dinitrogen, the end-on dinitrogen bridged heterobimetallic complexes [{Fe(depe)2}(μ-η1:η1-N2)(M{N(SiMe3)2}3)], 1-M (M = U(iii), Ce(iii), Sm(iii), Dy(iii) and Tm(iii)), [{Fe(depe)2}(μ-η1:η1-N2)(Ln{N(SiMe3)2}2)], 1*-Ln (Ln = Sm(ii), Yb(ii)) and [{Fe(depe)2(μ-η1:η1-N2)}2{SmII{N(SiMe3)2}2}], 3 could be prepared. The synthetic method used here allowed to isolate unprecedented end-on bridging N2 complexes of divalent lanthanides which provide relevant structural models for the species involved in the catalytic reduction of dinitrogen by Fe/Sm(ii) systems. Computational studies showed an essentially electrostatic interaction of the end-on bridging N2 with both Ln(iii) and Ln(ii) complexes with the degree of N2 activation correlating with their Lewis acidity. In contrast, a back-bonding covalent contribution to the U(iii)-N2Fe bond was identified by computational studies. Computational studies also suggest that end-on binding of N2 to U(iii) and Ln(ii) complexes is favoured for the iron-bound N2 compared to free N2 due to the higher N2 polarization.

Abstract
Dinitrogen cleavage provides an attractive but poorly studied route to the assembly of multimetallic nitride clusters. Here, we show that the monoelectron reduction of the dinitrogen complex [{U(OC6H2-But3-2,4,6)3}2(μ-η2:η2-N2)], 1, allows us to generate, for the first time, a uranium complex presenting a rare triply reduced N2 moiety ((μ-η2:η2-N2)•3-). Importantly, the bound dinitrogen can be further reduced, affording the U4N4 cubane cluster, 3, and the U6N6 edge-shared cubane cluster, 4, thus showing that (N2)•3- can be an intermediate in nitride formation. The tetranitride cluster showed high reactivity with electrophiles, yielding ammonia quantitatively upon acid addition and promoting CO cleavage to yield quantitative conversion of nitride into cyanide. These results show that dinitrogen reduction provides a versatile route for the assembly of large highly reactive nitride clusters, with U6N6 providing the first example of a molecular nitride of any metal formed from a complete cleavage of three N2 molecules.

Abstract
High-yield syntheses of the lanthanide dinitrogen complexes [(Cp2tttM)2(μ-1,2-N2)] (1M, M = Gd, Tb, Dy; Cpttt = 1,2,4-C5tBu3H2), in which the [N2]2- ligands solely adopt the rare end-on or 1,2-bridging mode, are reported. The bulk of the tert-butyl substituents and the smaller radii of gadolinium, terbium, and dysprosium preclude formation of the side-on dinitrogen bonding mode on steric grounds. Elongation of the nitrogen-nitrogen bond relative to N2 is observed in 1M, and their Raman spectra show a major absorption consistent with N═N double bonds. Computational analysis of 1Gd identifies that the local symmetry of the metallocene units lifts the degeneracy of two 5dπ orbitals, leading to differing overlap with the π* orbitals of [N2]2-, a consequence of which is that the dinitrogen ligand occupies a singlet ground state. Magnetic measurements reveal antiferromagnetic exchange in 1M and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior in 1Dy. Ab initio calculations show that the magnetic easy axis in the ground doublets of 1Tb and 1Dy align with the {M-N═N-M} connectivity, in contrast to the usual scenario in dysprosium metallocene SMMs, where the axis passes through the cyclopentadienyl ligands. The [N2]2- ligands in 1M allow these compounds to be regarded as two-electron reducing agents, serving as synthons for divalent gadolinium, terbium, and dysprosium. Proof of principle for this concept is obtained in the reactions of 1M with 2,2'-bipyridyl (bipy) to give [Cp2tttM(κ2-bipy)] (2M, M = Gd, Tb, Dy), in which the lanthanide is ligated by a bipy radical anion, with strong metal-ligand direct exchange coupling.

Abstract
Fundamental investigation of metal-CO interactions is of great importance for the development of high-performance catalysts to CO activation. Herein, a series of side-on bonded mononuclear lanthanide (Ln) oxocarbonyl complexes OLn(η2-CO) (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd) have been prepared and identified in solid argon matrices. The complexes exhibit uncommonly low C-O stretching bands near 1630 cm-1, indicating remarkable C-O bond activation in these Ln analogues. The η2-CO ligand in OLn(η2-CO) can be claimed as an anion on the basis of the experimental observations and quantum chemistry investigations, although the CO anion is commonly considered to be unstable with electron auto-detachment. The CO activation in OLn(η2-CO) is attributed to the photoinduced intramolecular charge transfer from LnO to CO rather than the generally accepted metal → CO π back-donation, which conforms to the traditional Dewar-Chatt-Duncanson motif. Energy decomposition analysis combined with natural orbitals for chemical valence calculations demonstrates that the bonding between LnO and η2-CO arises from the combination of dominant ionic forces (>76%) and normal Lewis "acid-base" interactions. The fundamental findings provide guidelines for the catalyst design of CO activation.

Abstract
Examination of the reduction chemistry of Nd(NR2)3 (R = SiMe3) under N2 has provided connections between the in situ Ln(III)-based LnIII(NR2)3/K reductions of N2 that form side-on bound neutral (N=N)2- complexes, [(R2N)2(THF)Ln]2[μ-η2:η2-N2], and the Ln(II)-based [LnII(NR2)3]1- reductions by Sc, Gd, and Tb that form end-on bound (N=N)2- complexes, {[(R2N)3Ln]2[μ-η1:η1-N2]}2-, which are dianions. The reduction of Nd(NR2)3 by KC8 under dinitrogen in Et2O in the presence of 18-crown-6 (18-c-6) forms dark yellow solutions of [K2(18-c-6)3]{[(R2N)3Nd]2N2} at low temperatures that become green as they warm up to -35 °C in a glovebox freezer. Green crystals obtained from the solution turn yellow-brown when cooled below -100 °C, and the yellow-brown compound has an end-on Nd2(μ-η1:η1-N2) structure. The yellow-brown crystals isomerize in the solid state on the diffractometer upon warming, and at -25 °C, the crystals are green and have a side-on Nd2(μ-η2:η2-N2) structure. Collection of X-ray diffraction data at 10 °C intervals from -50 to -90 °C revealed that the isomerization occurs at temperatures below -100 °C. In the presence of tetrahydrofuran (THF), the dianionic {[(R2N)3Nd]2N2}2- system can lose an amide ligand to provide the monoanionic [(R2N)3NdIII(μ-η2:η2-N2)NdIII(NR2)2(THF)]1-, characterized by X-ray crystallography. These data suggest a connection between the in situ Ln(III)/K reductions and Ln(II) reductions that depends on solvent, temperature, the presence of a chelate, and the specific rare-earth metal.

Abstract
The number of rare earth (RE) starting materials used in synthesis is staggering, ranging from simple binary metal-halide salts to borohydrides and "designer reagents" such as alkyl and organoaluminate complexes. This review collates the most important starting materials used in RE synthetic chemistry, including essential information on their preparations and uses in modern synthetic methodologies. The review is divided by starting material category and supporting ligands (i.e., metals as synthetic precursors, halides, borohydrides, nitrogen donors, oxygen donors, triflates, and organometallic reagents), and in each section relevant synthetic methodologies and applications are discussed.

Abstract
The syntheses and molecular structures of new SmII and TmII N,N-dimethylaminodiboranate (DMADB) complexes are described. Treating SmI2(THF)2 with Na(H3BNMe2BH3) in THF results in the formation of Sm(H3BNMe2BH3)2(THF)3 (1), which can be readily converted to Sm(H3BNMe2BH3)2(DME)2 (DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) or Sm(H3BNMe2BH3)2(diglyme) by exchange with the corresponding ether. We also show that Sm(H3BNMe2BH3)2(THF)3 can be prepared by reduction of the SmIII compound Sm(H3BNMe2BH3)3(THF) with KC8 and that addition of 18-crown-6 to this reaction mixture results in the formation of the SmII compound Sm(H3BNMe2BH3)2(18-crown-6). In a similar fashion, two new TmII complexes have been synthesized: treatment of TmI2 in THF with Na(H3BNMe2BH3) results in the formation of Tm(H3BNMe2BH3)2(THF)2 and Tm(H3BNMe2BH3)2(THF)3, which form a cocrystal. IR data and elemental analyses are reported for all the new compounds, as are their crystal structures. 1H and 11B NMR data are provided where available.

Abstract
Activation of dinitrogen plays an important role in daily anthropogenic life, and the processes by which this fixation occurs have been a longstanding and significant research focus within the community. One of the major fields of dinitrogen activation research is the use of multimetallic compounds to reduce and/or activate N2 into a more useful nitrogen-atom source, such as ammonia. Here we report a comprehensive review of multimetallic-dinitrogen complexes and their utility toward N2 activation, beginning with the d-block metals from Group 4 to Group 11, then extending to Group 13 (which is exclusively populated by B complexes), and finally the rare-earth and actinide species. The review considers all polynuclear metal aggregates containing two or more metal centers in which dinitrogen is coordinated or activated (i.e., partial or complete cleavage of the N2 triple bond in the observed product). Our survey includes complexes in which mononuclear N2 complexes are used as building blocks to generate homo- or heteromultimetallic dinitrogen species, which allow one to evaluate the potential of heterometallic species for dinitrogen activation. We highlight some of the common trends throughout the periodic table, such as the differences between coordination modes as it relates to N2 activation and potential functionalization and the effect of polarizing the bridging N2 ligand by employing different metal ions of differing Lewis acidities. By providing this comprehensive treatment of polynuclear metal dinitrogen species, this Review aims to outline the past and provide potential future directions for continued research in this area.

Abstract
Low-coordinate dinuclear lanthanide complexes supported by siloxides effect the reduction of carbon dioxide to both carbonate and oxalate, but the cooperative binding of CO2 to the two Ln(ii) cations in the dimer favours oxalate formation.

Abstract
Examination of the Y[N(SiMe(3))(2)](3)/KC(8) reduction system that allowed isolation of the (N(2))(3-) radical has led to the first evidence of Y(2+) in solution. The deep-blue solutions obtained from Y[N(SiMe(3))(2)](3) and KC(8) in THF at -35 °C under argon have EPR spectra containing a doublet at g(iso) = 1.976 with a 110 G hyperfine coupling constant. The solutions react with N(2) to generate (N(2))(2-) and (N(2))(3-) complexes {[(Me(3)Si)(2)N](2)(THF)Y}(2)(μ-η(2):η(2)-N(2)) (1) and {[(Me(3)Si)(2)N](2)(THF)Y}(2)(μ-η(2):η(2)-N(2))[K(THF)(6)] (2), respectively, and demonstrate that the Y[N(SiMe(3))(2)](3)/KC(8) reaction can proceed through an Y(2+) intermediate. The reactivity of (N(2))(3-) radical with proton sources was probed for the first time for comparison with the (N(2))(2-) and (N(2))(4-) chemistry. Complex 2 reacts with [Et(3)NH][BPh(4)] to form {[(Me(3)Si)(2)N](2)(THF)Y}(2)(μ-N(2)H(2)), the first lanthanide (N(2)H(2))(2-) complex derived from dinitrogen, as well as 1 as a byproduct, consistent with radical disproportionation reactivity.

Abstract
The synthesis of non-classical divalent lanthanide complexes, i.e. those not containing the classical samarium(II), europium(II) or ytterbium(II), was once thought impossible. Since 1997, when the first stable complex of thulium(II) was discovered, there has been many more examples of stable coordination and organometallic complexes of lanthanum(II), neodymium(II) and dysprosium(II) in addition to thulium(II), and the influence of the ligand system on the stability of the complexes is beginning to be understood. These non-classical divalent compounds show exceptional reactivity as some of them have been shown to activate dinitrogen at room temperature, together with related reduced divalent-like systems, and to undergo spontaneous intramolecular carbon-hydrogen bond activation. Many more examples of non-classical divalent compounds together with new aspects of their exciting reactivity should be discovered in the near future.

Isolation of dysprosium and yttrium complexes of a three-electron reduction product in the activation of dinitrogen, the (N2)3- radical. J Am Chem Soc 2009; 131:11195-202. Abstract
DyI(2) reacts with 2 equiv of KOAr (OAr = OC(6)H(3)(CMe(3))(2)-2,6) under nitrogen to form not only the (N(2))(2-) complex, [(ArO)(2)(THF)(2)Dy](2)(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-N(2)), 1, but also complexes of similar formula with an added potassium ion, [(ArO)(2)(THF)Dy](2)(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-N(2))[K(THF)(6)], 2, and [(ArO)(2)(THF)Dy](2)(mu(3)-eta(2):eta(2):eta(2)-N(2))K(THF), 3. The 1.396(7) and 1.402(7) A N-N bond distances in 2 and 3, respectively, are consistent with an (N(2))(3-) ligand, but the high magnetic moment of 4f(9) Dy(3+) precluded definitive identification. The Y[N(SiMe(3))(2)](3)/K reduction system was used to synthesize yttrium analogues of 2 and 3, {[(Me(3)Si)(2)N](2)(THF)Y}(2)(mu-eta(2):eta(2)-N(2))[K(THF)(6)] and {[(Me(3)Si)(2)N](2)(THF)Y}(2)(mu(3)-eta(2):eta(2):eta(2)-N(2))K, that had similar N-N distances and allowed full characterization. EPR, Raman, and DFT studies are all consistent with the presence of (N(2))(3-) in these complexes. (15)N analogues were also prepared to confirm the spectroscopic assignments. The DFT studies suggest that the unpaired electron is localized primarily in a dinitrogen pi orbital isolated spatially, energetically, and by symmetry from the metal orbitals.
