Ru(II)-Arene Complexes of Curcumin and Bisdesmethoxycurcumin Metabolites

Curcuminoids and their complexes continue to attract attention in medicinal chemistry, but little attention has been given to their metabolic derivatives. Here, the first examples of (arene)Ru(II) complexes with curcuminoid metabolites, tetrahydrocurcumin (THcurcH), and tetrahydrobisdesmethoxycurcumin (THbdcurcH) were prepared and characterized. The neutral complexes [Ru(arene)(THcurc)Cl] and [Ru(arene)(THbdcurc)Cl] (arene = cymene, benzene, or hexamethylbenzene) were characterized by NMR spectroscopy and ESI mass spectrometry, and the crystal structures of the three complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. Compared to curcuminoids, these metabolites lose their conjugated double bond system responsible for their planarity, showing unique closed conformation structures. Both closed and open conformations have been analyzed and rationalized by using density functional theory (DFT). The cytotoxicity of the complexes was evaluated in vitro against human ovarian carcinoma cells (A2780 and A2780cisR), human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF-7 and MCF-7CR), as well as against non-tumorigenic human embryonic kidney cells (HEK293) and human breast (MCF-10A) cells and compared to the free ligands, cisplatin, and RAPTA-C. There is a correlation between cellular uptake and the cytotoxicity of the compounds, suggesting that cellular uptake and binding to nuclear DNA may be the major pathway for cytotoxicity. However, the levels of complex binding to DNA do not strictly correlate with the cytotoxic potency, indicating that other mechanisms are also involved. In addition, treatment of MCF-7 cells with [Ru(cym)(THcurc)Cl] showed a significant decrease in p62 protein levels, which is generally assumed as a noncisplatin-like mechanism of action involving autophagy. Hence, a cisplatin- and a noncisplatin-like concerted mechanism of action, involving both apoptosis and autophagy, is possible.

Orientational Self-Sorting in Octahedral Palladium Cages: Scope and Limitations of the "cis Rule"

Octahedral coordination cages of the general formula [Pd6L12](BF4)12 were obtained by combining [Pd(CH3CN)4](BF4)2 with heteroditopic N-donor ligands. Four different ligands were employed. These ligands have 3-pyridyl donor groups at one end and 4-pyridyl, imidazolyl, or triazolyl donor groups at the other end. According to a geometric analysis, cages with a cis configuration at the six metal centers should be preferred ("cis rule"). This prediction was corroborated by spectroscopic data and crystallographic analyses. Limitations of the "cis rule" were also encountered, and possible explanations are discussed.

Molecular imine cages with π-basic Au3(pyrazolate) faces

One tetrahedral and two trigonal prismatic cages with π-basic Au3(pyrazolate)3 faces were obtained by connection of pre-formed gold complexes via dynamic covalent imine chemistry. The parallel arrangement of the Au3(pyrazolate)3 complexes in the prismatic cages augments the interaction with π-acids, as demonstrated by the encapsulation of polyhalogenated aromatic compounds. The tetrahedral cage was found to act as a potent receptor for fullerenes. The structures of the three cages, as well as the structures of adducts with C60 and C70, could be established by X-ray crystallography.

Multimetallic Uranium Nitride Cubane Clusters from Dinitrogen Cleavage

Dinitrogen cleavage provides an attractive but poorly studied route to the assembly of multimetallic nitride clusters. Here, we show that the monoelectron reduction of the dinitrogen complex [{U(OC6H2-But3-2,4,6)3}2(μ-η2:η2-N2)], 1, allows us to generate, for the first time, a uranium complex presenting a rare triply reduced N2 moiety ((μ-η2:η2-N2)•3-). Importantly, the bound dinitrogen can be further reduced, affording the U4N4 cubane cluster, 3, and the U6N6 edge-shared cubane cluster, 4, thus showing that (N2)•3- can be an intermediate in nitride formation. The tetranitride cluster showed high reactivity with electrophiles, yielding ammonia quantitatively upon acid addition and promoting CO cleavage to yield quantitative conversion of nitride into cyanide. These results show that dinitrogen reduction provides a versatile route for the assembly of large highly reactive nitride clusters, with U6N6 providing the first example of a molecular nitride of any metal formed from a complete cleavage of three N2 molecules.

Synthesis and Reactivity of an Anionic Diazoolefin

Bent (hetero)allenes such as carbodicarbenes and carbodiphosphoranes can act as neutral C-donor ligands, and diverse applications in coordination chemistry have been reported. N-Heterocyclic diazoolefins are heterocumulenes, which can function in a similar fashion as L-type ligands. Herein, we describe the synthesis and the reactivity of an anionic diazoolefin. This compound displays distinct reactivity compared to neutral diazoolefins, as evidenced by the preparation of diazo compounds via protonation, alkylation, or silylation. The anionic diazoolefin can be employed as an ambidentate, X-type ligand in salt metathesis reactions with metal halide complexes. Extrusion of dinitrogen was observed in a reaction with PCl(NiPr2 )2 , resulting in a stable phosphinocarbene.

A five-stranded heterometallic helicate

A penta-stranded helicate was obtained by combining [Pd(CH₃CN)₄](BF₄)₂ with La(NO₃)₃ and a polydentate ligand. The helicate displays low symmetry, both in solution and in the solid state. A dynamic interconversion between the penta-stranded helicate and a symmetrical, four-stranded helicate was achieved by adjustment of the metal-to-ligand ratio.

Uranium(IV) and Thorium(IV) Coordination Polymers Based on Tritopic Carboxylic Acids

Nine new coordination polymers based on U(IV) and Th(IV) were synthesized solvothermally utilizing four different trianionic carboxylates (H₃BHTC = biphenyl-3,4',5-tricarboxylic acid, H₃NTB = 4,4',4″-nitrilotribenzoic acid, H₃BTB = 4,4',4″-benzene-1,3,5-triyl-tris(benzoic acid), H₃BTE = 4,4',4″-(1,3,5-benzenetriyltri-2,1-ethynediyl)trisbenzoic acid). The influence of the ligand architecture, the pH, the stoichiometry, the nature of the metal, and the concentration on the structure and dimensionality of the final actinide assembly is discussed. The H₃BHTC ligand allowed the synthesis of a cationic three-dimensional (3D) framework [U(BHTC)(DMF)₃]I (1), which is the first example of a cationic U(IV) polymer. The H₃NTB ligand yielded the 3D neutral polymer [U₃(NTB)₄] (2) or the two-dimensional (2D) cationic polymer [U(NTB)(NMP)₃]I (3), depending on the solvent. When conditions leading to (2) were used with a Th(IV) precursor, the 2D neutral polymer [Th(NTB)(DMF)₃Cl] (4) was obtained. The ligand H₃BTB allowed the synthesis of two 3D cationic networks [U(BTB)(DMF)₂]I (5) and [U(BTB)(DMF)₃]I (7) or the neutral 3D analogue [U₃(BTB)₄] (6), depending on the precursor's oxidation state and the acidity of the reaction mixture. The ligand H₃BTE allowed the synthesis of the anionic 3D [(CH₃)₂NH₂][U₂(BTE)₃] (8) framework featuring large accessible pores, and under the same conditions, an isostructural Th(IV) was also obtained [(CH₃)₂NH₂][Th₂(BTE)₃] (8-Th). All isolated coordination polymers were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). The Langmuir surface areas of the U(IV) polymers (2), (7), and (8) increased from 140 to 310 m²/g owing to the increasing size of the linker, with polymer (8) showing a value that is comparable to the highest surface area reported to date. The effect of the postsynthetic solvent substitution was also studied, revealing a crystal-to-crystal transformation of the cationic framework (7) to the neutral framework [U(BTB)(THF)I] (7c).

Construction of Pd-based coordination cages with three geometrically distinct ligands

Three different dipyridyl ligands were combined with [Pd(CH₃CN)₄](BF₄)₂ to give mixtures of homo- and/or heteroleptic coordination cages. The three ligands were chosen so that one ligand shows a parallel orientation of the coordinate vectors, the second ligand a bent angle of 60°, and the third ligand a bent angle of 120°. We have identified ligand mixtures that give rise to integrative self-sorting, and we have characterized a heterotrileptic [Pd₄L₂L'₂L''₄]⁸⁺ cage by single crystal X-ray crystallography. The structural flexibility of ligands with alkynyl spacers was found to be of importance for the formation of heteroleptic complexes.

Head-to-Tail Dimerization of N-Heterocyclic Diazoolefins

The head-to-tail dimerization of N-heterocyclic diazoolefins is described. The products of these formal (3+3) cycloaddition reactions are strongly reducing quinoidal tetrazines. Oxidation of the tetrazines occurs in a stepwise fashion, and we were able to isolate a stable radical cation and diamagnetic dications. The latter are also accessible by oxidative dimerization of diazoolefins.

Multitarget-Directed Gallium(III) Tris(acyl-pyrazolonate) Complexes Induce Ferroptosis in Cancer Cells via Dysregulation of Cell Redox Homeostasis and Inhibition of the Mevalonate Pathway

A series of Ga(Q_n)₃ coordination compounds have been synthesized, where HQ_n is 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4-RC(═O)-pyrazolo-5-one. The complexes have been characterized through analytical data, NMR and IR spectroscopy, ESI mass spectrometry, elemental analysis, X-ray crystallography, and density functional theory (DFT) studies. Cytotoxic activity against a panel of human cancer cell lines was determined by the 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay, with interesting results in terms of both cell line selectivity and toxicity values compared with cisplatin. The mechanism of action was explored by spectrophotometric, fluorometric, chromatographic, immunometric, and cytofluorimetric assays, SPR biosensor binding studies, and cell-based experiments. Cell treatment with gallium(III) complexes promoted several cell death triggering signals (accumulation of p27, PCNA, PARP fragments, activation of the caspase cascade, and inhibition of the mevalonate pathway) and induced changes in cell redox homeostasis (decreased levels of GSH/GPX4 and NADP(H), increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and 4-hydroxynonenal (HNE), mitochondrial damage, and increased activity of CPR and CcO), identifying ferroptosis as the mechanism responsible for cancer cell death.

The acid-mediated isomerization of iridium(III) complexes with cyclometalated NHC ligands: kinetic vs. thermodynamic control

The isomerization of iridium(III) complexes with metalated N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ligands was studied. The fac isomers of complexes with 1-phenyl-3-methylbenzimidazolin-2-ylidene or 1-phenyl-3-benzylbenzimidazolin-2-ylidene ligands are transformed cleanly into the mer isomers when solutions of the complexes are treated with first HNTf₂ and then NEt₃. The transformation can be accomplished within a few minutes and the side product (NEt₃H)(NTf₂) is easy to separate. Spectroscopic and structural analyses indicate that the isomerization proceeds by protonation of the carbene ligand at the metalated phenyl group, accompanied by a fac → mer rearrangement of the carbene donors. An iridium complex with a 1-phenyl-1,2,4-triazolo[4,3-f]phenanthridine-based carbene ligand could not be isomerized under similar conditions, most likely because of its reduced conformational flexibility.

Synthetic Receptors with Micromolar Affinity for Chloride in Water

A water-soluble coordination cage was obtained by reaction of Pd(NO₃ )₂ with a 1,3-di(pyridin-3-yl)benzene ligand featuring a short PEG chain. The cavity of the metal-organic cage contains one nitrate anion, which is readily replaced by chloride. The apparent association constant for chloride binding in buffered aqueous solution is K_a =1.8(±0.1)×10⁵  M^-1 . This value is significantly higher than what has been reported for other macrocyclic chloride receptors. The heavier halides Br^- and I^- compete with binding or self-assembly, but the receptor displays very good selectivity over common anions such as phosphate, acetate, carbonate, and sulfate. A further increase of the chloride binding affinity by a factor of 3 was achieved using a fluorinated dipyridyl ligand.

Copper Complexes with Diazoolefin Ligands and their Photochemical Conversion into Alkenylidene Complexes

Homometallic copper complexes with alkenylidene ligands are discussed as intermediates in catalysis but the isolation of such complexes has remained elusive. Herein, we report the structural characterization of copper complexes with bridging and terminal alkenylidene ligands. The compounds were obtained by irradiation of Cu^I complexes with N-heterocyclic diazoolefin ligands. The complex with a terminal alkenylidene ligand required isolation in a crystalline matrix, and its structural characterization was enabled by in crystallo photolysis at low temperature.

Synthesis and Reactivity of a Terminal 1-Alkynyl Triazene

1-Alkynyl triazenes are versatile reagents in synthetic organic chemistry, but the structural diversity of this compound class has so far been limited. Herein, we describe the synthesis of a terminal 1-alkynyl triazene. Subsequent functionalization allows the preparation of 1-alkynyl triazenes with a range of functional groups including esters, alcohols, cyanides, phosphonates, and amides. Furthermore, the terminal 1-alkynyl triazene can be used for the synthesis of di- and triynes and for the preparation of (hetero)aromatic triazenes in metal-catalyzed cyclization reactions.

Orientational self-sorting in cuboctahedral Pd cages

Cuboctahedral coordination cages of the general formula [Pd12L24]24+ (L = low-symmetry ligand) were analyzed theoretically and experimentally. With 350 696 potential isomers, the structural space of these assemblies is vast. Orientational self-sorting refers to the preferential formation of particular isomers within the pool of potential structures. Geometric and computational analyses predict the preferred formation of cages with a cis arrangement at the metal centers. This prediction was corroborated experimentally by synthesizing a [Pd12L24]24+ cage with a bridging 3-(4-(pyridin-4-yl)phenyl)pyridine ligand. A crystallographic analysis of this assembly showed exclusive cis coordination of the 3- and the 4-pyridyl donor groups at the Pd2+ ions.

Structure and Reactivity of Polynuclear Divalent Lanthanide Disiloxanediolate Complexes

Trinuclear molecular complexes of europium (II) and ytterbium(II) [Ln₃{(Ph₂SiO)₂O}₃(THF)₆], 1-Ln₃L₃ (Ln = Eu and Yb), supported by the dianionic tetraphenyl disiloxanediolate ligand, were synthesized via protonolysis of the [Ln{N(SiMe₃)₂}₂(THF)₂] complexes. In contrast, the reaction of [Sm{N(SiMe₃)₂}₂(THF)₂] with the (Ph₂SiOH)₂O ligand led to the isolation of the mixed-valent Sm(II)/Sm(III) complex [Sm₃{(Ph₂SiO)₂O}₃{N(SiMe₃)₂}(THF)₄], 2-Sm₃L₃, which was crystallographically characterized. The Eu(II) complex 1-Eu₃L₃ displays weak ferromagnetic coupling between the Eu(II) metal centers (J = 0.1035 cm^-1). The addition of 3 equiv of (Ph₂SiOK)₂O to 1-Eu₃L₃ resulted in the formation of the polynuclear Eu(II) dimer of dimers [K₄Eu₂{(Ph₂SiO)₂O}₄(Et₂O)₂]₂, 3-Eu₂L₄. Complexes 1-Ln₃L₃ (Ln = Eu and Yb) are stable in solution at room temperature, while 3-Eu₂L₄ shows higher reactivity and rapidly decomposes to give the mixed-valent Eu(II)/Eu(III) species [K₃Eu₂{(Ph₂SiO)₂O}₄], 4-Eu₂L₄. Complex 1-Yb₃L₃ affects the slow reductive disproportionation of carbon dioxide, but 1-Eu₃L₃ does not display any reactivity toward CO₂. However, the presence of one additional (Ph₂SiO^-)₂O per Eu(II) metal center in 3-Eu₂L₄ increases dramatically the reductive ability of the Eu(II) metal centers, affording the first example of carbon dioxide activation by an isolated divalent europium complex. The reduction of CO₂ by 3-Eu₂L₄ is immediate, and carbonate is formed selectively after the addition of a stoichiometric amount of CO_2.

Vanadium complexes with N-heterocyclic vinylidene ligands

The preparation and the structural characterization of vanadium complexes with terminal and bridging N-heterocyclic vinylidene ligands is reported. The synthesis of the complexes was enabled by utilization of diazoolefins as ligand precursors. Structural data and theoretical results show that N-heterocyclic vinylidenes can act as 6e^- donor ligands, leading to strong metal-carbon interactions.

Structure, reactivity and luminescence studies of triphenylsiloxide complexes of tetravalent lanthanides

Among the 14 lanthanide elements (Ce–Lu), until recently, the tetravalent oxidation state was readily accessible in solution only for cerium while Pr(iv), Nd(iv), Dy(iv) and Tb(iv) had only been detected in the solid state. The triphenylsiloxide ligand recently allowed the isolation of molecular complexes of Tb(iv) and Pr(iv) providing an unique opportunity of investigating the luminescent properties of Ln(iv) ions. Here we have expanded the coordination studies of the triphenylsiloxide ligand with Ln(iii) and Ln(iv) ions and we report the first observed luminescence emission spectra of Pr(iv) complexes which are assigned to a ligand-based emission on the basis of the measured lifetime and computational studies. Binding of the ligand to the Pr(iv) ion leads to an unprecedented large shift of the ligand triplet state which is relevant for future applications in materials science.

Acid-base-induced fac → mer isomerization of luminescent iridium(iii) complexes

From fac to mer and back: a clean, fast and simple procedure for the transformation of fac-Ir(C^N)3 complexes into the thermodynamically less stable mer isomers is described. The process enables the interconversion of luminophores with distinct photophysical properties.

Nitrogen activation and cleavage by a multimetallic uranium complex

Multimetallic-multielectron cooperativity plays a key role in the metal-mediated cleavage of N₂ to nitrides (N³⁻). In particular, low-valent uranium complexes coupled with strong alkali metal reducing agents can lead to N₂ cleavage, but often, it is ambiguous how many electrons are transferred from the uranium centers to cleave N₂. Herein, we designed new dinuclear uranium nitride complexes presenting a combination of electronically diverse ancillary ligands to promote the multielectron transformation of N₂. Two heteroleptic diuranium nitride complexes, [K{U^IV(OSi(O^tBu)₃)(N(SiMe₃)₂)₂}₂(μ-N)] (1) and [Cs{U^IV(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(N(SiMe₃)₂)}₂(μ-N)] (3-Cs), containing different combinations of OSi(O^tBu)₃ and N(SiMe₃)₂ ancillary ligands, were synthesized. We found that both complexes could be reduced to their U(iii)/U(iv) analogues, and the complex, [K₂{U^IV/III(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(N(SiMe₃)₂)}₂(μ-N)] (6-K), could be further reduced to a putative U(iii)/U(iii) species that is capable of promoting the 4e⁻ reduction of N₂, yielding the N₂⁴⁻complex [K₃{U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(N(SiMe₃)₂)}₂(μ-N)(μ-η²:η²-N₂)], 7. Parallel N₂ reduction pathways were also identified, leading to the isolation of N₂ cleavage products, [K₃{U^VI(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(N(SiMe₃)₂)( Created by potrace 1.16, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2019 ]]> N)}(μ-N)₂{U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂(N(SiMe₃)₂)}]₂, 8, and [K₄{(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂U^V)(N)}(μ-NH)(μ-κ²:C,N-CH₂SiMe₂NSiMe₃)-{U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂][K(N(SiMe₃)₂]₂, 9. These complexes provide the first example of N₂ cleavage to nitride by a uranium complex in the absence of reducing alkali metals.

Synthesis, structural characterization, and coordination chemistry of imidazole-based alkylidene ketenes

Alkylidene ketenes typically display high intrinsic reactivity, impeding isolation on a preparative scale. Herein, we report the synthesis of alkylidene ketenes by reaction of imidazole-based diazoolefins with carbon monoxide. The good thermal stability of these heterocumulenes allows for characterization by single crystal X-ray diffraction. N-Heterocyclic alkylidene ketenes can be used as C-donor ligands for transition and main group metals, as evidenced by the isolation of complexes with AuCl, RhCl(CO)₂, PdCl(C₃H₅) and GaCl₃.

Nitrous oxide as a diazo transfer reagent: the synthesis of triazolopyridines

Nitrous oxide is a potential diazo transfer reagent, but its applications in organic chemistry are scarce. Here, we show that triazolopyridines and triazoloquinolines are formed in the reactions of metallated 2-alkylpyridines or 2-alkylquinolines with N₂O. The reactions can be performed under mild conditions and give synthetically interesting triazoles in moderate to good yields.

Isolation and characterization of diazoolefins

Diazoolefins tend to be highly reactive compounds that rapidly lose dinitrogen. So far, most experimental evidence for diazoolefins is indirect, via trapping experiments. Here we show that diazoolefins are observed to form in reactions of N-heterocyclic olefins with nitrous oxide. The products benefit from resonance stabilization, which enables isolation on a preparative scale, and comprehensive characterization, which includes crystallographic analyses. N-heterocyclic diazoolefins show a strong ylidic character, with a high charge density at the carbon atom next to the diazo group. Despite the presence of terminal N₂ groups, N-heterocyclic diazoolefins display a good thermal stability, which surpasses that observed for most diazoalkanes. N-heterocyclic diazoolefins can bind transition and main group metal complexes without the liberation of dinitrogen, and spectroscopic data show that they are strong electron donors. They can also undergo reactions that involve the N₂ group, as evidenced by cycloaddition reactions.

Orientational self-sorting: formation of structurally defined Pd4L8 and Pd6L12 cages from low-symmetry dipyridyl ligands

Tetra- and hexanuclear coordination cages were obtained in reactions of [Pd(CH₃CN)₄](BF₄)₂ with low-symmetry dipyridyl ligands. In both cases, only one structurally defined complex was formed out of a vast pool of potential isomers.

Synthesis of bicyclic vinyl triazenes by Ficini-type reactions

Cyclic olefins with triazene functions can display interesting reactivity, but synthetic access to these compounds is limited thus far. Herein, we describe the synthesis of cyclobutenyl triazenes fused to cyclopentanone or cyclohexanone rings. The bicyclic compounds are obtained by Lewis acid-catalyzed [2 + 2] cycloaddition reactions of 1-alkynyl triazenes and enones. In the presence of Me₂AlCl, bicyclic [4.2.0] triazenes rearrange into [3.2.1] ring systems. The triazene function in the latter can be used for further functionalizations. Notably, we show that vinyl triazenes can serve as substrates for Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with arylboronic acids.

Light-Switchable Buffers

A visible light-switchable buffer system based on a merocyanine photoacid is presented. Para-substitution of the indolium side with a methoxy group affords a compound suitable for making hydrolytically stable aqueous buffers whose pH can be tuned between 7 and 4 using 500 nm light.

Tuning the π-Accepting Properties of Mesoionic Carbenes: A Combined Computational and Experimental Study

Mesoionic imidazolylidenes are recognized as excellent electron‐donating ligands in organometallic and main group chemistry. However, these carbene ligands typically show poor π‐accepting properties. A computational analysis of 71 mesoionic imidazolylidenes that bear different aryl or heteroaryl substituents in C2 position was performed. The study has revealed that a diphenyltriazinyl (Dpt) substituent renders the corresponding carbene particularly π‐acidic. The computational results could be corroborated experimentally. A mesoionic imidazolylidene with a Dpt substituent was found to be a better σ‐donor and a better π‐acceptor compared to an Arduengo‐type N‐heterocyclic carbene. To demonstrate the utility of the new carbene, the ligand was used to stabilize a low‐valent paramagnetic tin compound.

Metal-Stabilized Boronate Ester Cages

Molecular cages with arylboronate ester caps at the vertices are described. The cages were obtained by metal-templated polycondensation reactions of a tris(2-formylpyridine oxime) ligand with arylboronic acids. Suited templates are triflate or triflimide salts of Zn^II, Fe^II, Co^II, or Mn^II. In the products, the metal ions are coordinated internally to the pyridyl and oximato N atoms adjacent to the boronate ester, resulting in an improved hydrolytic stability of the latter. It is possible to decorate the cages with cyano or aldehyde groups using functionalized arylboronic acids. The aldehyde groups allow for a postsynthetic modification of the cages via an imine bond formation.

Stepwise Reduction of Dinitrogen by a Uranium-Potassium Complex Yielding a U(VI)/U(IV) Tetranitride Cluster

Multimetallic cooperativity is believed to play a key role in the cleavage of dinitrogen to nitrides (N^3-), but the mechanism remains ambiguous due to the lack of isolated intermediates. Herein, we report the reduction of the complex [K₂{[U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₃]₂(μ-O)(μ-η²:η²-N₂)}], B, with KC₈, yielding the tetranuclear tetranitride cluster [K₆{(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂U^IV}₃{(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₂U^VI}(μ₄-N)₃(μ₃-N)(μ₃-O)₂], 1, a novel example of N₂ cleavage to nitride by a diuranium complex. The structure of complex 1 is remarkable, as it contains a unique uranium center bound by four nitrides and provides the second example of a trans-N═U^VI═N core analogue of UO₂²⁺. Experimental and computational studies indicate that the formation of the U(IV)/U(VI) tetrauranium cluster occurs via successive one-electron transfers from potassium to the bound N₂^4- ligand in complex B, resulting in N₂ cleavage and the formation of the putative diuranium(V) bis-nitride [K₄{[U^V(OSi(O^tBu)₃)₃]₂(μ-O)(μ-N)₂}], X. Additionally, cooperative potassium binding to the U-bound N₂^4- ligand facilitates dinitrogen cleavage during electron transfer. The nucleophilic nitrides in both complexes are easily functionalized by protons to yield ammonia in 93-97% yield and with excess ¹³CO to yield K¹³CN and KN¹³CO. The structures of two tetranuclear U(IV)/U(V) bis- and mononitride clusters isolated from the reaction with CO demonstrate that the nitride moieties are replaced by oxides without disrupting the tetranuclear structure, but ultimately leading to valence redistribution.

Tuning the Size and Geometry of Heteroleptic Coordination Cages by Varying the Ligand Bent Angle

Spherical assemblies of the type [Pd_n L_2n ]²ⁿ⁺ can be obtained from Pd^II salts and curved N-donor ligands, L. It is well established that the bent angle, α, of the ligand is a decisive factor in the self-assembly process, with larger angles leading to complexes with a higher nuclearity, n. Herein, we report heteroleptic coordination cages of the type [Pd_n L_n L'_n ]²ⁿ⁺ , for which a similar correlation between the ligand bent angle and the nuclearity is observed. Tetranuclear cages were obtained by combining [Pd(CH₃ CN)₄ ](BF₄ )₂ with 1,3-di(pyridin-3-yl)benzene and ligands featuring a bent angle of α=120°. The use of a dipyridyl ligand with α=149° led to the formation of a hexanuclear complex with a trigonal prismatic geometry; for linear ligands, octanuclear assemblies of the type [Pd₈ L₈ L'₈ ]¹⁶⁺ were obtained. The predictable formation of heteroleptic Pd^II cages from 1,3-di(pyridin-3-yl)benzene and different dipyridyl ligands is evidence that there are entire classes of heteroleptic cage structures that are privileged from a thermodynamic point of view.

Rationalizing Photo-Triggered Hydrogen Evolution Using Polypyridine Cobalt Complexes: Substituent Effects on Hexadentate Chelating Ligands

Four novel polypyridine cobalt(II) complexes were developed based on a hexadentate ligand scaffold bearing either electron-withdrawing (-CF₃ ) or electron-donating (-OCH₃ ) groups in different positions of the ligand. Experiments and theoretical calculations were combined to perform a systematic investigation of the effect of the ligand modification on the hydrogen evolution reaction. The results indicated that the position, rather than the type of substituent, was the dominating factor in promoting catalysis. The best performances were observed upon introduction of substituents on the pyridine moiety of the hexadentate ligand, which promoted the formation of the Co(II)H intermediate via intramolecular proton transfer reactions with low activation energy. Quantum yields of 11.3 and 10.1 %, maximum turnover frequencies of 86.1 and 76.6 min^-1 , and maximum turnover numbers of 5520 and 4043 were obtained, respectively, with a -OCH₃ and a -CF₃ substituent.

Delivery of a Masked Uranium(II) by an Oxide-Bridged Diuranium(III) Complex

Oxide is an attractive linker for building polymetallic complexes that provide molecular models for metal oxide activity, but studies of these systems are limited to metals in high oxidation states. Herein, we synthesized and characterized the molecular and electronic structure of diuranium bridged U^III /U^IV and U^III /U^III complexes. Reactivity studies of these complexes revealed that the U-O bond is easily broken upon addition of N-heterocycles resulting in the delivery of a formal equivalent of U^III and U^II , respectively, along with the uranium(IV) terminal-oxo coproduct. In particular, the U^III /U^III oxide complex effects the reductive coupling of pyridine and two-electron reduction of 4,4'-bipyridine affording unique examples of diuranium(III) complexes bridged by N-heterocyclic redox-active ligands. These results provide insight into the chemistry of low oxidation state metal oxides and demonstrate the use of oxo-bridged U^III /U^III complexes as a strategy to explore U^II reactivity.

Identification of a Heteroleptic Pd6L6L'6 Coordination Cage by Screening of a Virtual Combinatorial Library

The design of structurally defined heteroleptic coordination cages is a challenging task, and only few examples are known to date. Here we describe a selection approach that allowed the identification of a novel hexanuclear Pd cage containing two types of dipyridyl ligands. A virtual combinatorial library of [Pd_nL_2n](BF₄)_2n complexes was prepared by mixing six different dipyridyl ligands with substoichiometric amounts of [Pd(CH₃CN)₄](BF₄)₂. Analysis of the equilibrated reaction mixture revealed the preferential formation of a heteroleptic [Pd₆L₆L'₆](BF₄)₁₂ assembly. The complex was prepared on a preparative scale by a targeted synthesis, and its structure was elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It features an unprecedented trigonal-antiprismatic cage structure with two triangular Pd₃L₃ macrocycles bridged by six L' ligands. A related but significantly larger [Pd₆L₆L'₆](BF₄)₁₂ cage was obtained by using metalloligands instead of organic dipyridyl ligands.

Two-Step Synthesis of Linear and Bent Dicarboxylic Acid Metalloligands with Lengths of up to 3 nm

Nanometer-sized polycarboxylate ligands are interesting building blocks for metallasupramolecular chemistry, but access to these compounds is often limited by complicated synthetic pathways. Here, we describe a simple two-step protocol, which allows preparing linear and bent dicarboxylate ligands with lengths of up to 3 nm from commercially available compounds. The ligands are prepared by iron-templated polycondensation reactions involving arylboronic acids and nioxime. The final products contain two iron clathrochelate complexes and two terminal carboxyphenylene groups. To demonstrate that the new ligands are suitable for the construction of more complex molecular nanostructures, we have prepared a Cu-based metal-organic polyhedron, which represents the largest M₄L₄ cage described so far.

Thermodynamics and kinetics of protonated merocyanine photoacids in water

Metastable-state photoacids (mPAHs) are chemical species whose photo-activated state is long-lived enough to allow for proton diffusion. Liao's photoacid (1) represents the archetype of mPAHs, and is being widely used on account of its unique capability to change the acidity of aqueous solutions reversibly. The behavior of 1 in water, however, still remains poorly understood. Herein, we provide in-depth insights on the thermodynamics and kinetics of 1 in water through a series of comparative 1H NMR and UV-Vis studies and relative modelling. Under dark conditions, we quantified a three-component equilibrium system where the dissociation (K a) of the open protonated form (MCH) is followed by isomerization (K c) of the open deprotonated form (MC) to the closed spiropyran form (SP) - i.e., in the absence of light, the ground state acidity can be expressed as K GS a = K a(1 + K c). On the other hand, under powerful and continuous light irradiation we were able to assess, for the first time experimentally, the dissociation constant (K MS a) of the protonated metastable state (cis-MCH). In addition, we found that thermal ring-opening of SP is always rate-determining regardless of pH, whereas hydrolysis is reminiscent of what is found for Schiff bases. The proposed methodology is general, and it was applied to two other compounds bearing a shorter (ethyl, 2) and a longer (butyl, 3) alkyl-1-sulfonate bridge. We found that the pK a remains constant, whereas both pK c and pK MS a linearly increase with the length of the alkyl bridge. Importantly, all results are consistent with a four-component model cycle, which describes perfectly the full dynamics of proton release/uptake of 1-3 in water. The superior hydrolytic stability and water solubility of compound 3, together with its relatively high pK GS a (low K c), allowed us to achieve fully reversible jumps of 2.5 pH units over 18 consecutive cycles (6 hours).

Synthesis of Tetraarylethene Luminogens by C-H Vinylation of Aromatic Compounds with Triazenes

Tetraarylethenes are obtained by acid-induced coupling of vinyl triazenes with aromatic compounds. This new C-H activation route for the synthesis of aggregation-induced emission luminogens is simple, fast, and versatile. It allows the direct grafting of triarylethenyl groups onto a variety of aromatic compounds, including heterocycles, supramolecular hosts, biologically relevant molecules, and commercial polymers.

SET processes in Lewis acid-base reactions: the tritylation of N-heterocyclic carbenes

Reactions between N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) and the trityl cation, [Ph₃C]⁺, give covalent adducts of type [NHC-CPh₃]⁺ and/or [NHC-C₆H₅-CPh₂]⁺. EPR spectroscopy, UV-Vis analyses, and trapping experiments imply that adduct formation involves carbene radical cations and the trityl radical. The results demonstrate that single electron transfer (SET) processes should be considered for reaction of NHCs with oxidizing Lewis acids.

Accessing the +IV Oxidation State in Molecular Complexes of Praseodymium

Out of the 14 lanthanide (Ln) ions, molecular complexes of Ln(IV) were known only for cerium and more recently terbium. Here we demonstrate that the +IV oxidation state is also accessible for the large praseodymium (Pr) cation. The oxidation of the tetrakis(triphenysiloxide) Pr(III) ate complex, [KPr(OSiPh₃)₄(THF)₃], 1-Pr^Ph, with [N(C₆H₄Br)₃][SbCl₆], affords the Pr(IV) complex [Pr(OSiPh₃)₄(MeCN)₂], 2-Pr^Ph, which is stable once isolated. The solid state structure, UV-visible spectroscopy, magnetometry, and cyclic voltammetry data along with the DFT computations of the 2-Pr^Ph complex unambiguously confirm the presence of Pr(IV).

Ligand-Supported Facile Conversion of Uranyl(VI) into Uranium(IV) in Organic and Aqueous Media

Reduction of uranyl(VI) to U^V and to U^IV is important in uranium environmental migration and remediation processes. The anaerobic reduction of a uranyl U^VI complex supported by a picolinate ligand in both organic and aqueous media is presented. The [U^VI O₂ (dpaea)] complex is readily converted into the cis-boroxide U^IV species via diborane-mediated reductive functionalization in organic media. Remarkably, in aqueous media the uranyl(VI) complex is rapidly converted, by Na₂ S₂ O₄ , a reductant relevant for chemical remediation processes, into the stable uranyl(V) analogue, which is then slowly reduced to yield a water-insoluble trinuclear U^IV oxo-hydroxo cluster. This report provides the first example of direct conversion of a uranyl(VI) compound into a well-defined molecular U^IV species in aqueous conditions.

Synthesis and Properties of 1-Acyl Triazenes

1-Acyl triazenes can be prepared by acid-catalyzed hydration, gold/iodine-catalyzed oxidation, or oxyhalogenation of 1-alkynyl triazenes. Crystallographic analyses reveal a pronounced effect of the acyl group on the electronic structure of the triazene function. 1-Acyl triazenes display high thermal stability, and only moderate sensitivity toward hydrolysis. They are compatible with basic and oxidative conditions, allowing subsequent transformation. Under acidic conditions, 1-acyl triazenes act as acylation reagents.

Porous networks based on iron(ii) clathrochelate complexes

Microporous networks based on boronate ester-capped iron(ii) clathrochelate complexes are described. The networks were obtained by covalent cross-linking of tetrabrominated clathrochelate complexes via Suzuki-Miyaura polycross-coupling reactions with diboronic acids, or by Sonogashira-Hagihara polycross-coupling of clathrochelate complexes with terminal alkyne functions and 1,3,5-tribromobenzene. The networks display permanent porosity with apparent Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas of up to SABET = 593 m2 g-1. A clathrochelate complex based on an enantiopure dioximato ligand was used to prepare chiral networks. One of these networks was shown to preferentially absorb d-tryptophan over l-tryptophan.

Facile N-functionalization and strong magnetic communication in a diuranium(v) bis-nitride complex

Uranium nitride complexes are of high interest because of their ability to effect dinitrogen reduction and functionalization and to promote magnetic communication, but studies of their properties and reactivity remain rare. Here we have prepared in 73% yield the diuranium(v) bis-nitride complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)₂}], 4, from the thermal decomposition of the nitride-, azide-bridged diuranium(iv) complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)(μ-N₃)}], 3. The bis-nitride 4 reacts in ambient conditions with 1 equiv. of CS₂ and 1 equiv. of CO₂ resulting in N-C bond formation to afford the diuranium(v) complexes [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)(μ-S)(μ-NCS)}], 5 and [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-N)(μ-O)(μ-NCO)}], 6, respectively. Both nitrides in 4 react with CO resulting in oxidative addition of CO to one nitride and CO cleavage by the second nitride to afford the diuranium(iv) complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-CN)(μ-O)(μ-NCO)}], 7. Complex 4 also effects the remarkable oxidative cleavage of H₂ in mild conditions to afford the bis-imido bridged diuranium(iv) complex [K₂{[U(OSi(O ^t Bu)₃)₃]₂(μ-NH)₂}], 8 that can be further protonated to afford ammonia in 73% yield. Complex 8 provides a good model for hydrogen cleavage by metal nitrides in the Haber-Bosch process. The measured magnetic data show an unusually strong antiferromagnetic coupling between uranium(v) ions in the complexes 4 and 6 with Neel temperatures of 77 K and 60 K respectively, demonstrating that nitrides are attractives linkers for promoting magnetic communication in uranium complexes.

Structural Snapshots of Cluster Growth from {U6 } to {U38 } During the Hydrolysis of UCl4

Herein we report the assembly of large uranium(IV) clusters with novel nuclearities and/or shapes from the controlled hydrolysis of UCl₄ in organic solution and in the presence of the benzoate ligands. {U₆ }, {U₁₃ }, {U₁₆ }, {U₂₄ }, {U₃₈ } oxo and oxo/hydroxo clusters were isolated and crystallographically characterized. These structural snapshots indicate that larger clusters are slowly built from the condensation of octahedral {U₆ } building blocks. The uranium/benzoate ligand ratio, the reaction temperature and the presence of base play an important role in determining the structure of the final assembly. Moreover, the isolation of different size cluster {U₆ } (few hours), {U₁₆ } (3 days), {U₂₄ } (21 days) from the same solution in a chosen set of conditions shows that the assembly of uranium oxo clusters in hydrolytic conditions is time dependent.
