Stimulus-Induced Relief of Intentionally Incorporated Frustration Drives Refolding of a Water-Soluble Biomimetic Foldamer

Frustrated, or nonoptimal, interactions have been proposed to be essential to a protein's ability to display responsive behavior such as allostery, conformational signaling, and signal transduction. However, the intentional incorporation of frustrated noncovalent interactions has not been explored as a design element in the field of dynamic foldamers. Here, we report the design, synthesis, characterization, and molecular dynamics simulations of the first dynamic water-soluble foldamer that, in response to a stimulus, exploits relief of frustration in its noncovalent network to structurally rearrange from a pleated to an intercalated columnar structure. Thus, relief of frustration provides the energetic driving force for structural rearrangement. This work represents a previously unexplored design element for the development of stimulus-responsive systems that has potential application to materials chemistry, synthetic biology, and molecular machines.

Selective and Cooperative Photocycloadditions within Multistranded Aromatic Sheets

A series of aromatic helix-sheet-helix oligoamide foldamers composed of several different photosensitive diazaanthracene units have been designed and synthesized. Molecular objects up to 7 kDa were straightforwardly produced on a 100 mg scale. Nuclear magnetic resonance and crystallographic investigations revealed that helix-sheet-helix architectures can adopt one or two distinct conformations. Sequences composed of an even number of turn units were found to fold in a canonical symmetrical conformation with two helices of identical handedness stacked above and below the sheet segment. Sequences composed of an odd number of turns revealed a coexistence between a canonical fold with helices of opposite handedness and an alternate fold with a twist within the sheet and two helices of identical handedness. The proportions between these species could be manipulated, in some cases quantitatively, being dependent on solvent, temperature, and absolute control of helix handedness. Diazaanthracene units were shown to display distinct reactivity toward [4 + 4] photocycloadditions according to the substituent in position 9. Their organization within the sequences was programmed to allow photoreactions to take place in a specific order. Reaction pathways and kinetics were deciphered and product characterized, demonstrating the possibility to orchestrate successive photoreactions so as to avoid orphan units or to deliberately produce orphan units at precise locations. Strong cooperative effects were observed in which the photoreaction rate was influenced by the presence (or absence) of photoadducts in the structure. Multiple photoreactions within the aromatic sheet eventually lead to structure lengthening and stiffening, locking conformational equilibria. Photoproducts could be thermally reverted.

The development of a robust folded scaffold as a fluorescent material using butylidine-linked pyridazinone-based systems via aromatic π⋯π stacking interactions

Fluorescence-capable robust folded pyridazinone-based homo- and heterodimers linked with butylidine linkers, whose crystals exhibit fluorescence with quantum yields of 11% (1CN) and 28% (2CN) due to intramolecular stacking, were synthesized.

Room temperature charge-transfer phosphorescence from organic donor–acceptor Co-crystals

Engineering the electronic excited state manifolds of organic molecules can give rise to various functional outcomes, including ambient triplet harvesting, that has received prodigious attention in the recent past. Herein, we introduce a modular, non-covalent approach to bias the entire excited state landscape of an organic molecule using tunable ‘through-space charge-transfer’ interactions with appropriate donors. Although charge-transfer (CT) donor–acceptor complexes have been extensively explored as functional and supramolecular motifs in the realm of soft organic materials, they could not imprint their potentiality in the field of luminescent materials, and it still remains as a challenge. Thus, in the present study, we investigate the modulation of the excited state emission characteristics of a simple pyromellitic diimide derivative on complexation with appropriate donor molecules of varying electronic characteristics to demonstrate the selective harvesting of emission from its locally excited (LE) and CT singlet and triplet states. Remarkably, co-crystallization of the pyromellitic diimide with heavy-atom substituted and electron-rich aromatic donors leads to an unprecedented ambient CT phosphorescence with impressive efficiency and notable lifetime. Further, gradual minimizing of the electron-donating strength of the donors from 1,4-diiodo-2,3,5,6-tetramethylbenzene (or 1,2-diiodo-3,4,5,6-tetramethylbenzene) to 1,2-diiodo-4,5-dimethylbenzene and 1-bromo-4-iodobenzene modulates the source of ambient phosphorescence emission from the ³CT excited state to ³LE excited state. Through comprehensive spectroscopic, theoretical studies, and single-crystal analyses, we elucidate the unparalleled role of intermolecular donor–acceptor interactions to toggle between the emissive excited states and stabilize the triplet excitons. We envisage that the present study will be able to provide new and innovative dimensions to the existing molecular designs employed for triplet harvesting.

We report the design, synthesis, and folding of aromatic polyamides into an intrachain β-sheet-like structure. Additionally, the effect of a guest molecule in stabilizing the β-sheet structure has also been demonstrated here.

Free Charge Carriers in Homo-Sorted π-Stacks of Donor-Acceptor Conjugates

Inspired by the high photoconversion efficiency observed in natural light-harvesting systems, the hierarchical organization of molecular building blocks has gained impetus in the past few decades. Particularly, the molecular arrangement and packing in the active layer of organic solar cells (OSCs) have garnered significant attention due to the decisive role of the nature of donor/acceptor (D/A) heterojunctions in charge carrier generation and ultimately the power conversion efficiency. This review focuses on the recent developments in emergent optoelectronic properties exhibited by self-sorted donor-on-donor/acceptor-on-acceptor arrangement of covalently linked D-A systems, highlighting the ultrafast excited state dynamics of charge transfer and transport. Segregated organization of donors and acceptors promotes the delocalization of photoinduced charges among the stacks, engendering an enhanced charge separation lifetime and percolation pathways with ambipolar conductivity and charge carrier yield. Covalently linking donors and acceptors ensure a sufficient D-A interface and interchromophoric electronic coupling as required for faster charge separation while providing better control over their supramolecular assemblies. The design strategies to attain D-A conjugate assemblies with optimal charge carrier generation efficiency, the scope of their application compared to state-of-the-art OSCs, current challenges, and future opportunities are discussed in the review. An integrated overview of rational design approaches derived from the comprehension of underlying photoinduced processes can pave the way toward superior optoelectronic devices and bring in new possibilities to the avenue of functional supramolecular architectures.

Discrete π Stack of a Tweezer-Shaped Naphthalenediimide-Anthracene Conjugate

The design and synthesis of a tweezer-shaped naphthalenediimide (NDI)-anthracene conjugate (2NDI) are reported. In the structure of the closed form (π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI stack) of 2NDI, which was elucidated by single-crystal XRD, the existence of C-H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonding involving the nearest carbonyl oxygen atom of an NDI unit was suggested. The tunability of π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI interactions was studied by means of UV/Vis absorption, fluorescence and NMR spectroscopy and molecular modelling. This revealed that the π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI interactions in 2NDI affect the absorption and emission properties depending on the temperature. Furthermore, in polar solvents, 2NDI prefers the stronger π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI stack, whereas the π_NDI ⋅⋅⋅π_NDI interaction is diminished in nonpolar solvents. Importantly, the conformational variations of 2NDI can be reversibly switched by variation in temperature, and this suggests potential application for fluorogenic molecular switches upon temperature changes.

Aromatically functionalized pseudo-crown ethers with unusual solvent response and enhanced binding properties

Conformational flexibility in the host's structure is often considered detrimental to its binding. Flexible pseudo-crown ethers with aromatic donor/acceptor groups at the chain ends, however, displayed enhanced binding affinity and selectivity, particularly when the direct binding interactions were compromised by unfavorable solvents.

Aromatic β-sheet foldamers based on tertiary squaramides

Suitably substituted aryl-methyl tertiary squaramides are convenient and efficient at promoting hairpin turns in aromatic amide sequences.

Exploiting the interactions of aromatic units for folding and assembly in aqueous environments

A variety of non-covalent interactions (including hydrogen bonding, ionic interactions, metal coordination and desolvation/solvation) have been utilized to organize oligomers into well-defined structures. Herein is described a survey of aromatic foldamers that capitalize on electrostatic complementarity of substituted aromatic units to drive folding and assembly in aqueous environments. A brief description of recent advances in the understanding of aromatic interactions is provided, followed by examples of foldamers that exploit interactions between aromatic units to drive their assembly in predictable fashion. The history of our aromatic foldamers is traced from the first structure designed to fold into a pleated structure in an aqueous environment to a heteroduplex system more related to nucleic acids. Taken together, the results demonstrate that electrostatic complementarity of aromatic units provides a versatile framework for driving predictable folding and assembly in aqueous environments.

The sensitivity of donor - acceptor charge transfer to molecular geometry in DAN - NDI based supramolecular flower-like self-assemblies

A charge-transfer (CT) complex self-assembled from an electron acceptor (NDI-EA: naphthalene diimide with appended diamine) and an electron donor (DAN: phosphonic acid-appended dialkoxynapthalene) in aqueous medium. The aromatic core of the NDI and the structure of DAN1 were designed to optimize the dispersive interactions (π-π and van der Waals interactions) in the DAN1–NDI-EA self-assembly, while the amino groups of NDI also interact with the phosphonic acid of DAN1 via electrostatic forces. This arrangement prevented crystallization and favored the directional growth of 3D flower nanostructures. This molecular geometry that is necessary for charge transfer to occur was further evidenced by using a mismatching DAN2 structure. The flower-shaped assembly was visualized by scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. The formation of the CT complex was determined by UV-vis and cyclic voltammetry and the photoinduced electron transfer to produce the radical ion pair was examined by femtosecond laser transient absorption spectroscopic measurements.

H-bonding directed programmed supramolecular assembly of naphthalene-diimide (NDI) derivatives

In this review we have collated various supramolecular designs, all surrounding H-bonding among well-known functional groups (peptides, nucleic acids, amides, ureas, carboxylic acids, pyridine-hydroxyls, urethanes, imides and others), to dictate self-assembly of naphthalenediimide (NDI) π-systems (both small molecules and polymeric building blocks) that exhibit several exciting features including strong propensity for π-π interactions, π-acidity, excellent n-type semiconductivity, CT-complexation, ion-π interactions, ring-substitution dependent redox properties and photophysical properties. This article reveals that H-bonding can indeed serve as a very powerful and versatile tool to programmed self-assembly of a single or multiple dye system producing a wide range of tailored soft materials, including fibrillar gels, chromonic mesophases, foldamers, nanotubes, vesicles, reverse micelles and polymersomes, both in water and organic medium with distinct photophysical properties, charge transport properties, conductivity properties and functional group displays that are highly relevant in the fields of biology and organic electronics.

Supramolecular approach to new inkjet printing inks

Electronically complementary, low molecular weight polymers that self-assemble through tunable π-π stacking interactions to form extended supramolecular polymer networks have been developed for inkjet printing applications and successfully deposited using three different printing techniques. Sequential overprinting of the complementary components results in supramolecular network formation through complexation of π-electron rich pyrenyl or perylenyl chain-ends in one component with π-electron deficient naphthalene diimide residues in a chain-folding polyimide. The complementary π-π stacked polymer blends generate strongly colored materials as a result of charge-transfer absorption bands in the visible spectrum, potentially negating the need for pigments or dyes in the ink formulation. Indeed, the final color of the deposited material can be tailored by varying the end-groups of the π-electron rich polymer component. Piezoelectric printing techniques were employed in a proof of concept study to allow characterization of the materials deposited, and a thermal inkjet printer adapted with imaging software enabled in situ analysis of the ink drops as they formed and of their physical properties. Finally, continuous inkjet printing allowed greater volumes of material to be deposited, on a variety of different substrate surfaces, and demonstrated the utility and versatility of this novel type of ink for industrial applications.

High-fidelity self-assembly of crystalline and parallel-oriented organic thin films by π-π stacking from a metal surface

Organic semiconductor applications will significantly benefit from atomically precise, cofacial stacking of extended π-conjugated molecular systems for efficient charge transport. Surface-assisted self-assembly of poly(hetero)cyclic molecules via donor-acceptor type π-π stacking is a promising strategy to organize functional, many-layered architectures. We have employed tris(N-phenyltriazole) as a model system to achieve molecular-level structural ordering through more than 20 molecular layers from its own metal-templated monolayer. Effective charge transport through such layers enabled molecular-resolution imaging by scanning tunneling microscopy. The structure and chemical composition of the films, grown on Ag(111) or Au(100), were further analyzed by noncontact atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, revealing a cofacial stacking geometry of the molecular layers. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements show a decrease of the band gap with increasing film thickness, consistent with π-π stacking and electron delocalization. The present study provides new strategies for the fabrication of normally inaccessible structural motifs, atomic precision in organic films, and the effective conduction of electrons through multiple organic molecular stacks.

Three component assemblies by orthogonal H-bonding and donor-acceptor charge-transfer interaction

Three component supramolecular assemblies from a mixture of an aromatic donor (D), acceptor (A) and external structure directing agent (ESDA) are achieved by orthogonal noncovalent interactions involving two different types of H-bonding and alternate D-A stacking. An ESDA containing amide or urea produces a charge-transfer gel and sol, respectively, owing to their contrasting morphology.

Influence of perylenediimide-pyrene supramolecular interactions on the stability of DNA-based hybrids: Importance of electrostatic complementarity

Aromatic π-π stacking interactions are ubiquitous in nature, medicinal chemistry and materials sciences. They play a crucial role in the stacking of nucleobases, thus stabilising the DNA double helix. The following paper describes a series of chimeric DNA-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) hybrids. The PAH building blocks are electron-rich pyrene and electron-poor perylenediimide (PDI), and were incorporated into complementary DNA strands. The hybrids contain different numbers of pyrene-PDI interactions that were found to directly influence duplex stability. As the pyrene-PDI ratio approaches 1:1, the stability of the duplexes increases with an average value of 7.5 °C per pyrene-PDI supramolecular interaction indicating the importance of electrostatic complementarity for aromatic π-π stacking interactions.

High affinity crown ether complexes in water: thermodynamic analysis, evidence of crystallography and binding of NAD+

Improving traditional crown ether to the water-soluble and high binding ability host molecule is critical to our efforts to model or mimic biological supramolecular systems. In this paper, we converted two traditional crown ethers, 1,5-dinaphtho-32-crown-8 and 1,5-dinaphtho-38-crown-10, into the water-soluble tetrasulfonated 1,5-dinaphtho-32-crown-8 and tetrasulfonated 1,5-dinaphtho-38-crown-10, evaluated their complexation with three dicationic bipyridiniums in aqueous solution by microcalorimetric titration, UV-vis, and NMR experiments, and then determined the crystal structures of three tetrasulfonatocrown ether-bipyridinium complexes. The equilibrium association constants of tetrasulfonated 1,5-dinaphtho-32-crown-8 with these bipyridiniums reach up to 10(7) M(-1), while those of tetrasulfonated 1,5-dinaphtho-38-crown-10 are just in the range of 10(5) M(-1) order of magnitude. The thermodynamic data obtained show that the complexation of two tetrasulfonatocrown ethers with dicationic bipyridiniums is absolutely enthalpy-driven in water with an accompanying little entropic gain, and each monocationic pyridinium moiety in guest molecules can provide about -10 to -15 kJ·mol(-1) enthalpy contribution irrespective of the size of ether crowns. Moreover, we also investigated the recognition capability of the two water-soluble crown ethers with NAD(+) and NADH by microcalorimetric titration and NMR experiments, indicating that tetrasulfonated 1,5-dinaphtho-32-crown-8 shows exclusive selectivity to NAD(+). The water-solubility and high affinity of this system as well as the flexible and non-preorganized characteristic of these crown ethers make it suitable to serve as a model for mimicking biological systems.

Amino acid derivatized arylenediimides: a versatile modular approach for functional molecular materials

Nature's elegant molecular designs and their assemblies with specific structure-property correlations have inspired researchers to design and develop bio-mimics for advanced functional applications. To realize such advanced molecular materials, naturally evolved amino acids are arguably the ideal auxiliaries due to their remarkable molecular/chiral recognition and distinctive sequence specific self-assembling properties. Over the years, this modular approach of derivatizing naphthalenediimides (NDIs) and perylenediimides (PDIs) with amino acids and peptides have resulted in several hitherto unknown molecular assemblies with phenomenal impact on their performance. Derivatization with versatile arylenediimides is especially interesting due to their wide spread applications in fields ranging from biomedicine to electronics. Herein some of these seminal reports of this rapidly emerging field and the design principles embraced are discussed.
