Abstract
Palladium-catalysed Wacker-type oxidation of olefins to ketones or aldehydes is one of the most prominent homogeneous reactions globally, even performed at a multi-tonne scale. From a fundamental and an applied point of view, it is extremely appealing to replace palladium catalysts by other metal-based catalysts to increase the efficiency, selectivity and sustainability, particularly considering the reactivity of well-defined first-row transition metal complexes as catalysts. In this case, the ligand(s) coordinating to the metal(s) play a major role in controlling selectivity and activity, thanks to unique mechanistic considerations. This mechanistically-driven feature article emphasizes the advantages and disadvantages of currently existing approaches. Besides the main efforts devoted to homogeneous catalysis, heterogenous systems and biocatalysis have also been studied as they offer complementary strategies. Overall, this review presents an up-to-date analysis of key contributions while highlighting existing gaps for future developments in this important and exciting field.

Abstract
The combination of a natural amino acid (AA) (l-Glu, l-Tyr, and l-Lys) and tetrabutylammonium iodide was efficiently employed as a catalytic framework for the Meinwald rearrangement of various epoxides into their respective ketones under microwave irradiation and solvent-free conditions. The designed catalytic system has shown a good catalytic performance in the conversion of epoxides with different functional groups. The reaction is regioselective toward ketone formation, and these have been obtained in good to excellent yields. l-Glu was found to be the most active AA for this catalytic transformation. A mechanistic proposal, supported by computational simulations, is also provided to reinforce our experimental findings. The suggested reaction mechanism was obtained by computing the minimum energy path at the density functional theory level through the climbing-image nudged elastic band method. A localized molecular orbital analysis based on intrinsic bond orbitals was also performed to better understand the catalytic role of the AA -TBAI combination along the computed reaction path. A key role of both the carboxylic moiety and the iodide anion was identified in different reaction steps of our proposed mechanism, facilitating hydride transposition to form the final product.

Abstract
Styrene oxide isomerase (SOI) catalyzes the Meinwald rearrangement of aryl epoxides to carbonyl compounds via a 1,2-trans-shift in a stereospecific manner. A number of cascade biotransformations with SOI-catalyzed epoxide isomerization as a key step have been developed to convert readily available substrates into valuable chiral chemicals. Cascade conversion of terminal or internal alkenes into chiral acids, alcohols or amines was achieved, which involved SOI-catalyzed enantio-retentive isomerization of terminal epoxides via 1,2-H shift, or internal epoxides via 1,2-methyl shift. SOI-involved cascades were also developed to convert racemic epoxides into chiral acids or amines via dynamic kinetic resolution. Additionally, combining SOI-catalyzed isomerization with enantioselective C-C bond forming enzymes enabled the synthesis of chiral amino acids or amino alcohols from racemic epoxides. Finally, integration of SOI-involved cascades with biosynthesis pathways allowed for the direct utilization of renewable substrates for the sustainable synthesis of high-value natural chemicals such as alcohols, acids, and esters.

Abstract
Poly(malic acid) (PMLA) is a water-soluble, biodegradable, biocompatible, and nontoxic polyester in the poly(hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA) family. it features various applications in pharmaceutical field. Herein, NaCo(CO)4 and pyridine derivatives are employed for direct carbonylative polymerization of benzyl glycidate (BG) for poly(β-malic acid) production. Further investigation on reaction mechanism reveals that this polymerization undergoes a direct chain growth, rather than a sequential process involving β-lactone intermediate. The low cost and facile preparation of epoxide substrate render this methodology extremely appealing that avoids the rather tedious procedures for β-malolactonate synthesis required toward ring opening polymerization. This study also represents an alternative strategy over traditional methods for poly(β-malic acid) production using step growth polycondensation of malic acid.

Abstract
A convenient and general protocol for the palladium-catalysed oxidation of internal allylamine derivatives to β-amino ketones is reported. The transformation occurs at room temperature and shows a wide substrate scope as well as high functional group and N-protecting group tolerance. We also describe potential applications of the method, e.g., the synthesis of bioactive molecules or simple transformations of selected β-amino ketones into other interesting building blocks.

Abstract
The Wacker reaction is the oxidation of olefins to ketones and typically requires expensive and scarce palladium catalysts in the presence of an additional copper co-catalyst under harsh conditions (acidic media, high pressure of air/dioxygen, elevated temperatures). Such a transformation is relevant for industry, as shown by the synthesis of acetaldehyde from ethylene as well as for fine-chemicals, because of the versatility of a carbonyl group placed at specific positions. In this regard, many contributions have focused on controlling the chemo- and regioselectivity of the olefin oxidation by means of well-defined palladium catalysts under different sets of reaction conditions. However, the development of Wacker-type processes that avoid the use of palladium catalysts has just emerged in the last few years, thereby paving the way for the generation of more sustainable procedures, including milder reaction conditions and green chemistry technologies. In this Minireview, we discuss the development of new catalytic processes that utilize more benign catalysts and sustainable reaction conditions.

Abstract
The Meinwald rearrangement is a synthetically useful reaction but often lacks regioselectivity and stereocontrol. A significant challenge in the Meinwald rearrangement of internal epoxides is the non-regioselective migration of different substituents to give a mixture of products. Herein, an enzyme-catalyzed regioselective and stereospecific 1,2-methyl shift in the Meinwald rearrangement of internal epoxides is reported. Styrene oxide isomerase (SOI) catalyzed the unique isomerization of internal epoxides through 1,2-methyl shift without 1,2-hydride shift to give the corresponding aldehydes and a cyclic ketone as the sole product. SOI-catalyzed isomerization showed high stereospecificity, fully retaining the stereoconfiguration. The synthetic utility of this enzymatic Meinwald rearrangement was demonstrated by its incorporation into three new types of enantioselective cascades, to convert trans-β-methyl styrenes into the corresponding R-configured alcohols, acids, or amines in high ee and yield.

Abstract
Atom-economical catalytic reactions are a highly enticing strategy because all atoms of the starting materials are incorporated into the products. Catalytic hydrogenation of epoxides to alcohols is an attractive and alternative protocol to other synthetic methodologies for the synthesis of alcohols from alkenes. In the last two decades, catalytic hydrogenation of epoxides to alcohols has made remarkable progress in chemical synthesis. In this review, an overview of the catalytic hydrogenation of both terminal and internal epoxides to the corresponding alcohols is presented. An outline of both homogeneous and heterogeneous hydrogenation of epoxides to the corresponding alcohols is provided. Moreover, the selectivity, efficiency, and the reaction mechanisms of these epoxide hydrogenation reactions are highlighted.

Abstract
The synthesis of amides is significant in a wide variety of academic and industrial fields. We report here a new reaction, namely acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of epoxides and amines to form amides catalyzed by ruthenium pincer complexes. Various aryl epoxides and amines smoothly convert into the desired amides in high yields with the generation of H2 gas as the only byproduct. Control experiments indicate that amides are generated kinetically faster than side products, possibly because of the facile activation of epoxides by metal–ligand cooperation, as supported by the observation of a ruthenium-enolate species. No alcohol or free aldehyde are involved. A mechanism is proposed involving a dual role of the catalyst, which is responsible for the high yield and selectivity of the new reaction. We report the ruthenium pincer complex catalyzed acceptorless dehydrogenative coupling of epoxides and amines to form amides. The reaction offers a facile and atom economical two-step strategy for transforming alkenes into amides.![]()

Abstract
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are a unique class of commercially manufactured biodegradable polyesters with properties suitable for partially substituting petroleum-based plastics. However, high costs and low volumes of production have restricted their application as commodity materials. In this study, tri-metallic complexes were developed for carbonylative polymerization of epoxides via a dual catalysis strategy, affording 17 products of novel PHAs with up to 38.2 kg/mol M n values. The polymerization proceeds in a sequential fashion, which entails the carbonylative ring expansion of epoxide to β -lactone and its subsequent ring-opening polymerization that occurs selectively at the O- alkyl bond via carboxylate species. The wide availability and structural diversity of epoxide monomers provide PHAs with various structures, excellent functionalities, and tunable properties. This study represents a rare example of the preparation of PHAs using epoxides and carbon monoxide as raw materials.

Abstract
Unprecedented enantioselective resolution copolymerization of racemic cis-internal epoxides and anhydrides was mediated by dinuclear aluminum complexes with multiple chirality, affording optically active polyesters with two contiguous stereogenic centers, and the unreacted substrates in good enantioselectivity. Unexpected stereoconvergence is observed in this resolution copolymerization, where the selectivity factor for the enantioselective formation of copolymer significantly exceeds the kinetic resolution coefficient based on the unreacted epoxide at various conversions. Catalytic activity and copolymer enantioselectivity are strongly influenced by the phenolate ortho-substituents of the ligand set, as well as the axial linker and its chirality. An enantiopure binaphthol-linked bimetallic AlIII complex allows stereoconvergent access to the stereoregular semi-crystalline polyesters and a concomitant kinetic resolution of the epoxide substrates.

Abstract
Due to their inherent ring strain and electrophilicity, epoxides are highly attractive building blocks for fundamental organic reactions. However, controlling the regioselectivity of disubstituted epoxide transformations is often particularly challenging. Most Lewis acid-mediated processes take advantage of intrinsic steric or electronic substrate bias to influence the site of nucleophilic attack. Therefore, the scope of many of these systems is frequently quite limited. Recent efforts to generate catalysts that can overcome substrate bias have expanded the synthetic utility of these well-known reactions. In this Perspective, we highlight various regioselective transformations of disubstituted epoxides, emphasizing those that have inspired the production of challenging, catalyst-controlled processes.

Abstract
A straightforward methodology for the synthesis of anti-Markovnikov-type alcohols is presented. By using a specific cobalt triphos complex in the presence of Zn(OTf)2 as an additive, the hydrogenation of epoxides proceeds with high yields and selectivities. The described protocol shows a broad substrate scope, including multi-substituted internal and terminal epoxides, as well as a good functional-group tolerance. Various natural-product derivatives, including steroids, terpenoids, and sesquiterpenoids, gave access to the corresponding alcohols in moderate-to-excellent yields.

Abstract
The challenging coupling of highly substituted terpene oxides and carbon dioxide into bio-based cyclic organic carbonates catalyzed by Al(aminotriphenolate) complexes is reported. Both acyclic as well as cyclic terpene oxides were used as coupling partners, showing distinct reactivity/selectivity behavior. Whereas cyclic terpene oxides showed excellent chemoselectivity towards the organic carbonate product, acyclic substrates exhibited poorer selectivities owing to concomitant epoxide rearrangement reactions and the formation of undesired oligo/polyether side products. Considering the challenging nature of these coupling reactions, the isolated yields of the targeted bio-carbonates are reasonable and in most cases in the range 50-60 %. The first crystal structures of tri-substituted terpene based cyclic carbonates are reported and their stereoconnectivity suggests that their formation proceeds through a double inversion pathway.
