Abstract
Reactions of a m-terphenylhydridostannylene with β-diketiminato magnesium and calcium hydrides provide bis-μ2-hydrido species, the heterobimetallic constitutions of which are maintained after the addition of THF donor solvent. In both cases, reactions with hex-1-ene result in the formation of tetravalent organostannyl alkaline earth derivatives. Whereas the magnesium reagent undergoes facile twofold addition, the calcium-centered process is arrested after a single alkene reduction event. This contrasting behavior is assessed to result from the heavier alkaline earth element's ability to form a persistent polyhapto interaction with an arene substituent of the m-terphenyl ligand.

Abstract
Ethylene insertion into the Ga-Ge bond of the L(Cl)Ga-substituted germylene LGa(μ-Cl)GeDMP 1 (L = HC(C(Me)NAr)2, Ar = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; DMP = 2,6-Mes2C6H3, Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) at ambient temperature is followed by dimerization of the as-formed germylene to give the digermene 3, which further reacted with ethylene in a [2 + 2] cycloaddition to give the 1,2-digermacyclobutane 4. In marked contrast, the amino-substituted germylene L(Cl)GaGeN(SiMe3)Ar 2 reacted directly to the 1,2-digermacyclobutane 5. Quantum chemical calculations confirmed the assumed reaction mechanism, hence demonstrating the crucial role of the substituent on the reaction mechanism.

Abstract
Several base-stabilized silyliumylidene ions (2 and 3) with different ligands were synthesized. Their behaviour appeared strongly dependent on the nature of ligand. Indeed, in contrast to the poorly reactive silyliumylidene ions 3 c,d stabilized by strongly donating ligands (DMAP, NHC), the silylene- and sulfide-supported one (2-H and 3 a) exhibits higher reactivity toward various small molecules. Furthermore, their capability to successively activate multiple small molecules was clearly demonstrated by processes involving successive reactions with silane/formamide, CO2 and H2 . Moreover, HBPin adduct of 3 a (8-C) catalyzes the hydroboration of pyridine. Of particular interest, silylene-supported silyliumylidene complex 2-H is one of the rare species able to activate two H2 molecules.

Abstract
The organogermanium and organotin trihydrides (TbbEH3) [E = Ge (3), Sn (7)] with the Tbb substituent were synthesized by hydride substitution (Tbb = 2,6-[CH(SiMe3)2]2-4-(t-Bu)C6H2). Deprotonation of the organoelement trihydrides 3 and 7 was studied in reaction with bases MeLi, BnK and LDA (Bn = benzyl, LDA = lithium diisopropylamide) to yield the deprotonation products (8-11) as lithium or potassium salts. Hydride abstraction from TbbSnH3 using the trityl salt [Ph3C][Al(OC{CF3}3)4] gives the salt [TbbSnH2][Al(OC{CF3}3)4] (12) which was stabilized by thf donor ligands [TbbSnH2(thf)2][Al(OC{CF3}3)4] (13). Tintrihydride 7 reacts with trialkylamine Et2MeN to give as the product of a reductive elimination of hydrogen the distannane (TbbSnH2)2 (14). Transfer of hydrogen was observed in reaction of trihydrides TbbEH3 (E = Ge, Sn) and Ar*GeH3 with N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC). The NHC adduct TbbSnH(iPrNHC) (15) was synthesized at rt and the germanium hydrides exhibit hydrogen transfer at higher temperatures to give Ar*GeH(MeNHC) (16) and TbbGeH(MeNHC) (17).

Abstract
Unlike isolable tin(II) hydrides supported by bulky ligands reported in the literature, this research describes the synthesis and characterization of thermally stable tin(II) hydrides LPhSnH (1-H) and MeLSnH (2-H) stabilized by sterically undemanding N,N,N-coordinating pincer-type ligands (LPh = 2,5-dipyridyl-3,4-diphenylpyrrolato; MeL = 2,5-bis(6-methylpyridyl)pyrrolato). The results from previous reports reveal that attempts to access tin(II) hydrides containing less-bulky ligands have had limited success, and decomposition to tin(I) distannynes often occurs. The key to the successful isolation of 1-H and 2-H is the identification of the role of Lewis acidic BsBu3, generated upon delivering hydride from commonly used hydride reagents M[BsBu3H] ("selectrides", M = Li or K). This study details compelling experimental evidence and theoretical results of the role played by BsBu3, which catalyzes the dehydrocoupling reactions of 1-H and 2-H to yield tin(I) distannynes LPhSn-SnLPh (12) and MeLSn-SnMeL (22) with the liberation of H2. To avoid the interference of BsBu3, 1-H and 2-H can be isolated in pure forms using pinacolborane as the hydride donor with LPhSnOMe (1-OMe) and MeLSnOMe (2-OMe) as reactants, respectively. DFT calculations and experimental observations indicate that the coordination of the Sn-H bond of 1-H to BsBu3 leaves an electrophilic tin center, rendering the nucleophilic attack by the second equivalent of 1-H forming a Sn-Sn bond.

Abstract
In a reaction of tantalocene trihydride with the low valent aryl tin cation [Ar*Sn(C6H6)][Al(OC{CF3}3)4] (1a) the hydridostannylene complex [Cp2TaH2–Sn(H)Ar*][Al(OC{CF3}3)4] (2) was synthesized. Hydride bridged adducts [Cp2WH2EAr*][Al(OC{CF3}3)4] (E = Sn 3a, Pb 3b) were isolated as products of the reaction between Cp2WH2 and cations [Ar*E(C6H6)][Al(OC{CF3}3)4] (E = Sn 1a, Pb 1b). The tin adduct 3a exhibits a proton migration to give the hydridostannylene complex [Cp2W(H)

Sn(H)Ar*][Al(OC{CF3}3)4] 4a. The cationic complex 4a is deprotonated at the tin atom in reaction with base MeNHC at 80 °C to give a hydrido-tungstenostannylene [Cp2W(H)SnAr*] 5a. Reprotonation of metallostannylene 5a with acid [H(Et2O)2][BArF] provides an alternative route to hydridotetrylene coordination. Complex 4a adds hydride to give the dihydrostannyl complex [Cp2W(H)–SnH2Ar*] (7). With styrene 4a shows formation of a hydrostannylation product [Cp2W(H)Sn(CH2CH2Ph)Ar*][Al(OC{CF3}3)4] (8). The lead adduct 3b was deprotonated with MeNHC to give plumbylene 5b [Cp2W(H)PbAr*]. Protonation of 5b with [H(Et2O)2][Al(OC{CF3}3)4] at −40 °C followed by low temperature NMR spectroscopy indicates a hydridoplumbylene intermediate [Cp2W(H)Pb(H)Ar*]+ (4b). Hydrido-tungstenotetrylenes of elements Ge (5c), Sn (5a) and Pb (5b) were also synthesized reacting the salt [Cp2W(H)Li]4 with organotetrylene halides. The metallogermylene [Cp2W(H)GeAr*] (5c) shows an isomerization via 1,2-H-migration to give the hydridogermylene [Cp2WGe(H)Ar*] (9), which is accelerated by addition of AIBN. 9 is at rt photochemically transferred back to 5c under light of a mercury vapor lamp. Zirconocene dihydride [Cp2ZrH2]2 reacts with tin cation 1a to give the trinuclear hydridostannylene adduct 10 [({Cp2Zr}2{μ-H})(μ-H)2μ-Sn(H)Ar*][Al(OC{CF3}3)4]. Deprotonation of 10 was carried out using benzyl potassium to give neutral [({Cp2Zr}2{μ-H})(μ-H)μ-Sn(H)Ar*] (11). 11 was also obtained from the reaction of low valent tin hydride [Ar*SnH]2 with two equivalents of [Cp2ZrH2]2. The trihydride Ar*SnH3 reacts with half of an equivalent of [Cp2ZrH2]2 under evolution of hydrogen and formation of a dihydrostannyl complex 13 [Cp2Zr(μ-H)SnH2Ar*]2 and with further equivalents of Ar*SnH3 to give bis(hydridostannylene) complex [Cp2Zr{Sn(H)Ar*}2]. Low valent cations of tin and lead were used to form hydridotetrylene coordination compounds. The mobility of the hydrogen substituent was investigated in deprotonation equilibria as well as in 1,2-H-shift reactions.![]()

Abstract
Treatment of the trichlorotin-capped trinuclear nickel cluster, [Ni3(dppm)3(μ3-Cl)(μ3-SnCl3)], 1, with 4 eq. NaHB(Et)3 yields a μ3-SnH capped trinuclear nickel cluster, [Ni3(dppm)3(μ3-H)(μ3-SnH)], 2 [dppm = bis(diphenylphosphino)methane]. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, and computational studies together support that cluster 2 is a divalent tin hydride. Complex 2 displays a wide range of reactivity including oxidative addition of bromoethane across the Sn center. Addition of 1 eq. iodoethane to complex 2 releases H2 (g) and generates an ethyltin-capped nickel cluster with a μ3-iodide, [Ni3(dppm)3(μ3-I)(μ3-Sn(CH2CH3))], 4. Notably, insertion of alkynes into the Sn–H bond of 2 can be achieved via addition of 1 eq. 1-hexyne to generate the 1-hexen-2-yl-tin-capped nickel cluster, [Ni3(dppm)3(μ3H)(μ3-Sn(C6H11))], 5. Addition of H2 (g) to 5 regenerates the starting material, 2, and hexane. The formally 44-electron cluster 2 also displays significant redox chemistry with two reversible one-electron oxidations (E = −1.3 V, −0.8 V vs. Fc0/+) and one-electron reduction process (E = −2.7 V vs. Fc0/+) observed by cyclic voltammetry. The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of a μ3-SnH capped trinuclear nickel cluster, [Ni3(dppm)3(μ3-H)(μ3-SnH)], is reported. This complex undergoes oxidative addition chemistry, alkyne insertion, and subsequent hydrogenation.![]()

Abstract
Low valent organoelement hydrides of tin and lead, [(Ar*SnH)2] and [(Ar*PbH)2], were reacted with diorganocarbodiimide and adamantylisocyanate to give products of hydroelementation reactions. Carbon dioxide also reacts with both low valent hydrides, but a reaction product was only characterized in the tin hydride case. A hydride was transferred to the carbon atom and the formed formate anion [HCO2]- shows coordination at two tin atoms. Carbon disulfide reacts with the stannyl-stannylene isomer of the low valent organotin hydride. The stannyl part forms a Sn-C bond whereas the stannylene moiety coordinates at the two sulfur atoms. The dimeric organolead hydride exhibits transfer of both hydride ligands to the carbon atom of CS2 to give a dithiol ligand [CH2S2]2- bridging both organolead units.

Abstract
Phenylacetylene adds [Ar*GeH2 -SnAr'], [Ar*GeH2 -PbAr'] and [Ar'SnH2 -PbAr*] at rt in a regioselective and stereoselective reaction. The highest reactivity was found for the stannylene, which reacts immediately upon addition of one equivalent of alkyne. However, the plumbylenes exhibit addition to the alkyne only in reaction with an excess of phenylacetylene. The product of the germylplumbylene addition reacts with a second equivalent of alkyne and the product of a CH-activation, a dimeric lead acetylide, were isolated. In the case of the stannylplumbylene the trans-addition product was characterized as the kinetically controlled product which isomerizes at rt to yield the cis-addition product, which is stabilized by an intramolecular Sn-H-Pb interaction. NMR chemical shifts of the olefins were investigated using two- and four-component relativistic DFT calculations, as spin-orbit effects can be large. Hydride abstraction was carried out by treating [Ar'SnPhC=CHGeH2 Ar*] with the trityl salt [Ph3 C][Al(OC{CF3 })4 ] to yield a four membered ring cation.

Abstract
Reactions of a series of magnesium(I) compounds with ethylene, in the presence of an N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC), have been explored. Treating [{(Mes Nacnac)Mg}2 ] (Mes Nacnac=[HC(MeCNMes)2 ]- , Mes=mesityl) with an excess of ethylene in the presence of two equivalents of :C{(MeNCMe)2 } (TMC) leads to the formal reductive coupling of ethylene, and formation of the 1,2-dimagnesiobutane complex, [{(Mes Nacnac)(TMC)Mg}2 (μ-C4 H8 )]. In contrast, when the reaction is repeated in the presence of three equivalents of TMC, a mixture of the β-diketiminato magnesium ethyl, [(Mes Nacnac)(TMC)MgEt], and the NHC coordinated magnesium diamide, [(Mes Nacnac-H )Mg(TMC)2 ], results. Four related products, [(Ar Nacnac)(TMC)MgEt] (Ar=2,6-dimethylphenyl (Xyl) or 2,6-diisopropylphenyl (Dip)) and [(Ar Nacnac-H )Mg(TMC)2 ] (Ar=Xyl or Dip), were similarly synthesised and crystallographically characterized. Computational studies have been employed to investigate the mechanisms of the two observed reaction types, which appear dependent on the substitution pattern of the magnesium(I) compound, and the stoichiometric equivalents of TMC used in the reactions.

Abstract
Terphenyltin and terphenylgermanium trihydrides were deprotonated in reaction with strong bases, such as LiMe, LDA, or KBn. In the solid state, the Li salts of the germate anion 4 and 4a exhibit a Li-Ge contact. In the Li salt of the dihydridostannate anion 6a, the Li cation is not coordinated at the tin atom instead an interaction of the Li cation with the hydride substituents was found. Evidenced by 1H-7Li-HOESY NMR spectroscopy the Li-salt of the deprotonated tin hydride 6a exhibits in toluene solution a contact between Li cation and hydride substituents, whereas in the 1H-7Li-HOESY NMR spectrum of the homologous germate salt 4a, no crosspeak between hydride and Li signals was found. The organodihydridogermate and -stannate react as nucleophiles with low-valent Group 14 electrophiles. Thus, three compounds were synthesized: Ar-Ë'-EH2-Ar (E', E = Sn, Ge; Pb, Ge; Pb, Sn; Ar = Ar', Ar*). Following an alternative synthesis Ar'SnH2PbAr* was synthesized in reaction between [(Ar*PbH)2] and [(Ar'SnH)4] generated in situ. In reaction between low-valent organotin hydride [(Ar*SnH)2] and organdihydridostannate [Ar*SnH2]- formation of distannate [Ar*2Sn2H3]- was found.

Abstract
Simple reactions of their terphenyl lead bromide precursors with DIBAL-H in diethyl ether solution at ca. -78 °C leads to the isolation of the hydrides {Pb(μ-H)ArPri4}2 (ArPri4 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-Pri2)2) (1) and {Pb(μ-H)ArMe6}2 (ArMe6 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-Me3)2) (2) in good yield (60-80%). The isolated solids are stable at up to 5 °C for several weeks but are thermally labile in solution. Hydride 1 decomposes to the diplumbyne ArPri4PbPbArPri4, while 2 decomposes to the plumbylene Pb(ArMe6)2. The decomposition of 1 was determined to be zero order with a rate constant of ca. 2.0 × 10-5 M min-1 at 298 K.

Abstract
The diarylstannylenes, Sn(AriPr4)2 and Sn(AriPr6)2, (AriPr4 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-iPr2)2, AriPr6 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-iPr3)2), undergo a facile migratory insertion reaction with ethylene at 60 °C to afford the alkyl aryl stannylenes AriPr4SnCH2CH2AriPr4 and AriPr6SnCH2CH2AriPr6 which were characterized via1H, 13C and 119Sn NMR, UV-vis and IR spectroscopy, as well as by X-ray crystallography. Quantum mechanical calculations were performed, and two potential mechanisms were identified, with a migratory insertion reaction pathyway being energetically preferred.

Abstract
The chemistry of group 14 element(ii) hydride complexes has rapidly expanded since the first stable example of such a compound was reported in 2000. Since that time it has become apparent that these systems display remarkable reactivity patterns, in some cases mimicking those of late transition-metal (TM) hydride compounds. This is especially so for the hydroelementation of unsaturated organic substrates. Recently, this aspect of their reactivity has been extended to the use of group 14 element(ii) hydrides as efficient, "TM-like" catalysts in organic synthesis. This review will detail how the chemistry of these hydride compounds has advanced since their early development. Throughout, there is a focus on the importance of ligand effects in these systems, and how ligand design can greatly modify a coordinated complex's electronic structure, reactivity, and catalytic efficiency.

Abstract
Reactions of the Sn(II) hydrides [ArSn(μ-H)]2 (1) (Ar = AriPr4 (1a), AriPr6 (1b); AriP4 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H3-2,6-iPr2)2, AriPr6 = C6H3-2,6-(C6H2-2,4,6-iPr3)2) with norbornene (NB) or norbornadiene (NBD) readily generate the bicyclic alkyl-/alkenyl-substituted stannylenes, ArSn(norbornyl) (2a or 2b) and ArSn(norbornenyl) (3a or 3b), respectively. Heating a toluene solution of 3a or 3b at reflux afforded the rearranged species ArSn(3-tricyclo[2.2.1.02,6]heptane) (4a or 4b), in which the norbornenyl ligand is transformed into a nortricyclyl group. 1H NMR studies of the reactions of 4a or 4b with tert-butylethylene indicated the existence of an apparently unique reversible β-hydride elimination from the bicyclic substituted aryl/alkyl stannylenes 2a or 2b and 3a or 3b. Mechanistic studies indicated that the transformation of 3a or 3b into 4a or 4b occurs via a β-hydride elimination of 1a or 1b to regenerate NBD. Kinetic studies showed that the conversion of 3a or 3b to 4a or 4b is first order. The rate constant k for the conversion of 3a into 3b was determined to be 3.33 × 10-5 min-1, with an activation energy Ea of 16.4 ± 0.7 kcal mol-1.
