Electroremovable Traceless Hydrazides for Cobalt-Catalyzed Electro-Oxidative C–H/N–H Activation with Internal Alkynes

Atroposelective N-N Axes Synthesis via Electrochemical Cobalt Catalysis

Here, we disclosed an unprecedented cobalt electrocatalyzed atroposelective C-H activation and annulation for the efficient construction of diversely functionalized N-N axes in an undivided cell. A broad range of allene substrates and benzamides bearing different functionalities are compatible with generating axially chiral products with good yields and excellent enantioselectivities (up to 92% yield and 99% ee). A series of synthetic applications and control experiments were also performed, which further expanded the practicality of this strategy.

Green advancements towards the electrochemical synthesis of heterocycles

Heterocyclic chemistry is a large field with diverse applications in the areas of biological research and pharmaceutical advancement. Numerous initiatives have been proposed to further enhance the reaction conditions to reach these compounds without using harmful compounds. This paper focuses on the recent advances in the eco-friendly and green synthetic procedures to synthesize N-, S-, and O-heterocycles. This approach demonstrates considerable potential in accessing such compounds while circumventing the need for stoichiometric quantities of oxidizing/reducing agents or catalysts containing precious metals. Merely employing catalytic quantities of these substances proves sufficient, thereby offering an optimal means of contributing to resource efficiency. Renewable electricity plays a crucial role in generating environmentally friendly electrons (oxidant/reductant) that serve as catalysts for a series of reactions. These reactions involve the production of reactive intermediates, which in turn allow the synthesis of new chemical bonds, enabling beneficial transformations to occur. Furthermore, the utilization of metals as active catalysts in electrochemical activation has been recognized as an effective approach for achieving selective functionalization. The aim of this review was to summarize the electrochemical synthetic procedures so that the undesirable side reactions can be considerably reduced and the practical potential range of the chemical reactions can be expanded significantly.

Photoredox-Catalyzed Alkene Amination: C(sp2)-H/N-H Radical-Radical Cross Dehydrogenative Coupling

Direct alkene C-H/N-H cross dehydrogenative coupling is an infrequent, highly challenging transformation. Herein, a photoredox radical-radical cross-coupling reaction between ketene dithioacetal as a persistent alkene radical cation and azole nitrogen center radical (NCR) was developed. This direct alkene amination proceeded through a synergistic photoredox and cobalt catalysis, with only H2 evolution. The reaction showed excellent tolerance and highly regio- and stereospecific manner, expanding the scope of C(sp2)-N construction methods and radical cross-coupling modes.

Transition-Metal-Free Electrochemical Selenylative Cyclization of Alkynyl Phosphonates

Unprecedented regioselective electrochemical tandem selenation/cyclization of alkynyl phosphonates with diselenide is described here. These obtained selenoether products can be chemo-selectively converted into halogen-functionalized cyclic enol phosphonates under our electrochemical conditions. These protocols provide straightforward access to valuable cyclic enol phosphonate or phosphaisocoumarins under the electrochemical and transition-metal-free conditions. The robustness of these transformations was illustrated by their compatibility with various complex natural products and bioactive molecules. The selenoether and halogen functional groups allow the further diversification of the phosphorus heterocycles thus obtained.

Electrochemical Late-Stage Functionalization

Late-stage functionalization (LSF) constitutes a powerful strategy for the assembly or diversification of novel molecular entities with improved physicochemical or biological activities. LSF can thus greatly accelerate the development of medicinally relevant compounds, crop protecting agents, and functional materials. Electrochemical molecular synthesis has emerged as an environmentally friendly platform for the transformation of organic compounds. Over the past decade, electrochemical late-stage functionalization (eLSF) has gained major momentum, which is summarized herein up to February 2023.

C-N Axially Chiral Heterobiaryl Isoquinolinone Skeletons Construction via Cobalt-Catalyzed Atroposelective C-H Activation/Annulation

Herein, the atroposelective construction of isoquinolinones bearing a C-N chiral axis has been successfully developed via a Co-catalyzed C-H bond activation and annulation process. This conversion can be effectively carried out in an environmentally friendly oxygen atmosphere to generate the target C-N axially chiral frameworks with excellent reactivities and enantioselectivities (up to >99% ee) in the absence of any additives. Additionally, the current protocol has proved to be an alternative approach for the C-N axial architectures fabrication under electrochemical conditions for cobalt/Salox catalysis, and this strategy allowed the efficient and atom-economical synthesis of various axially chiral isoquinolinones under mild reaction conditions.

Electrochemical Preparation of Sm(II) Reagent Facilitated by Weakly Coordinating Anions

Samarium diiodide (SmI2 ) is widely used as a strong one-electron reducing agent and is often employed to form C-C bonds in complex systems. Despite their utility, SmI2 and related salts suffer from several drawbacks that render the use of Sm reducing agents in large-scale synthesis impractical. Here, we report factors influencing the electrochemical reduction of Sm(III) to Sm(II), towards the goal of electrocatalytic Sm(III) reduction. We probe the effect of supporting electrolyte, electrode material, and Sm precursor on Sm(II)/(III) redox and on the reducing power of the Sm species. We find that the coordination strength of the counteranion of the Sm salt affects the reversibility and redox potential of the Sm(II)/(III) couple and establish that the counteranion primarily determines the reducibility of Sm(III). Electrochemically generated SmI2 performs similarly to commercial SmI2 solutions in a proof-of-concept reaction. The results will provide fundamental insight to facilitate the development of Sm-electrocatalytic reactions.

Synthesis of Quinoxalines through Cu-electrocatalytic Azidation/Annulation Cascade at Low Catalyst Loading

A Cu-electrocatalytic azidation of N-aryl enamines and subsequent denitrogenative annulation for the construction of quinoxaline frameworks is reported. Only 0.5 mol % of copper(II) chloride was employed for this cascade transformation displaying excellent functional-group compatibility even with complex bioactive scaffolds. The efficient electro-oxidative protocol enables the use of NaN3 as the cheapest azide source. Detailed mechanistic experiments, cyclic voltammetry, and spectroscopic studies provided strong evidence for a dual role of the Cu catalyst in azidyl and iminyl radical generation steps.

Electrochemical Syntheses of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs)

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have surfaced as increasingly viable components in optoelectronics and material sciences. The development of highly efficient and atom-economic tools to prepare PAHs under exceedingly mild conditions constitutes a long-term goal. Traditional syntheses of PAHs have largely relied on multistep approaches or the conventional Scholl reaction. However, Scholl reactions are largely inefficient with electron-deficient substrates, require stoichiometric chemical oxidants, and typically occur in the presence of strong acid. In sharp contrast, electrochemistry has gained considerable momentum during the past decade as an alternative for the facile and straightforward PAHs assembly, generally via electro-oxidative dehydrogenative annulation, releasing molecular hydrogen as the sole stoichiometric byproduct by the hydrogen evolution reaction. This review provides an overview on the recent and significant advances in the field of electrochemical syntheses of various PAHs until January 2023.

Enantio- and Regioselective Electrooxidative Cobalt-Catalyzed C-H/N-H Annulation with Alkenes

In recent years, the merging of electrosynthesis with 3d metal catalyzed C-H activation has emerged as a sustainable and powerful technique in organic synthesis. Despite the impressive advantages, the development of an enantioselective version remains elusive and poses a daunting challenge. Herein, we report the first electrooxidative cobalt-catalyzed enantio- and regioselective C-H/N-H annulation with olefins using an undivided cell at room temperature (up to 99 % ee). ^t Bu-Salox, a rationally designed Salox ligand bearing a bulky tert-butyl group at the ortho-position of phenol, was found to be crucial for this asymmetric annulation reaction. A strong cooperative effect between ^t Bu-Salox and 3,4,5-trichloropyridine enabled the highly enantio- and regioselective C-H annulation with the more challenging α-olefins without secondary bond interactions (up to 96 % ee and 97 : 3 rr). Cyclovoltametric studies, and the preparation, characterization, and transformation of cobaltacycle intermediates shed light on the mechanism of this reaction.

Heterocyclic Electrochemistry: Renewable Electricity in the Construction of Heterocycles

Numerous applications in the realm of biological exploration and drug synthesis can be found in heterocyclic chemistry, which is a vast subject. Many efforts have been developed to further improve the reaction conditions to access this interesting family to prevent employing hazardous ingredients. In this instance, it has been stated that green and environmentally friendly manufacturing methodologies have been introduced to create N-, S-, and O-heterocycles. It appears to be one of the most promising methods to access these types of compounds avoiding use of stoichiometric amounts of oxidizing/reducing species or precious metal catalysts, in which only catalytic amounts are sufficient, and it represent an ideal way of contributing toward the resource economy. Thus, renewable electricity provides clean electrons (oxidant/reductant) that initiate a reaction cascade via producing reactive intermediates that facilitate in building new bonds for valuable chemical transformations. Moreover, electrochemical activation using metals as catalytic mediators has been identified as a more efficient strategy toward selective functionalization. Thus, indirect electrolysis makes the potential range more practical, and less side reactions can occur. The latest developments in using an electrolytic strategy to create N-, S-, and O-heterocycles are the main topic of this mini review, which was documented over the last five years.

Visible-light promoted intramolecular carboamination of alkynes for the synthesis of oxazolidinone-fused isoquinolinones

An efficient method for the synthesis of isoquinolinone derivatives via photopromoted carboamination of alkynes is developed. Starting from the readily available propargyl alcohol derivatives, the polycyclic isoquinolinone derivatives could be obtained with good aryl and heterocycle tolerance. Both terminal and alkyl substituted alkynes could be employed. This protocol is operationally easy, and easily conducted on a gram-scale. A possible mechanism involving radical addition and cyclization following aromatization was proposed.

Cp*Co(III)-Catalyzed Regioselective [4 + 2]-Annulation of N-Chlorobenzamides with Vinyl Acetate/Vinyl Ketones

An efficient and straightforward strategy for the synthesis of isoquinolones through [4 + 2]-annulation of N-chlorobenzamides with vinyl acetate in the presence of CoCp*(III) catalyst in a regioselective manner is described. Furthermore, the annulation reaction was diversified by using vinyl ketones. By utilizing this strategy, biologically valuable isoquinolone derivatives were prepared in good yields. Subsequently, isoquinolone derivatives were further transformed into 1-chloroisoquinolines in the presence of POCl₃. Furthermore, mechanistic investigations such as deuterium labeling study and competition experiment were performed to support the proposed reaction mechanism.

Design, development and applications of copper-catalyzed regioselective (4 + 2) annulations between diaryliodonium salts and alkynes

Diaryliodonium salts have been extensively applied in organic synthesis as aryl cation equivalents. However, in the electrophilic reactions with alkenes or alkynes, only the electrophilic carbon of the diaryliodonium salts was involved while the other part of the aryl ring was not utilized. Herein, a reaction pattern of diaryliodonium was reported as oxa-1,4-dipoles to undergo (4 + 2) cycloaddition reactions with alkynes. Broad spectrum of the two reaction partners could be utilized in this protocol, enabling an operationally simple, high yielding, and regioselective synthetic approach to isocoumarins. Particularly, good to excellent regioselectivities were achieved for the sterically unbiased unsymmetrical diaryl acetylenes, which was challenging for other transition metal-catalyzed processes. The reaction could be scaled up with the ideal 1:1 stoichiometry and the isocoumarin type natural products Oospolactone and Thunberginol A could be obtained in one or three steps through this methodology.

Micro-photo-flow reactor system for fused N-heteroaryl scaffold synthesis and late-stage functionalization of pyrazolopyridines

Late-stage functionalization (LSF) of active pharmaceutical ingredients can provide a straightforward approach to efficient de novo design and synthesis of drug molecules for structural activity relationship studies (SARS). Herein, we have developed a visible-light-driven modular micro-flow reactor consisting of an integrated post-synthetic work-up that was designed and developed to synthesize a fused N-heteroaryl scaffold and late-stage functionalization of pyrazolopyridines without using any expensive oxidant or additional photo-catalyst (PC).

Cobalt-catalyzed C(sp2)-H bond imination of phenylalanine derivatives

Herein we report the cobalt-catalyzed, picolinamide-directed C-H bond imination protocol of phenylalanine derivatives using isocyanides and a Co(dpm)₂ catalyst. A wide range of functional groups were tolerated under the reaction conditions, yielding imines in high yields. The obtained imine products can easily be transformed to 1-aminoisoquinoline derivatives under reductive conditions, providing an attractive alternative to already existing methodologies. The control experiments indicated that C-H activation might occur via an electrophilic pathway.

Electrochemical selenium-π-acid promoted hydration of alkynyl phosphonates

An unprecedented electrochemical selenium-π-acid promoted hydration of internal alkynes bearing a phosphonate auxiliary was described. Thus, valuable (hetero)aryl and alkyl ketones could be accessed under mild, metal- and external oxidant-free conditions. This protocol features high atom-economy, good chemo- and regio-selectivity, excellent functional group tolerance and easily transformable products. Control experiments demonstrate that phosphonate assistance is essential for this transformation.

Nickel catalyzed multicomponent stereodivergent synthesis of olefins enabled by electrochemistry, photocatalysis and photo-electrochemistry

Trisubstituted alkenes are important organic synthons and have broad applications in the synthesis of many pharmaceuticals and materials. The stereoselective synthesis of such compounds has long been a research focus for organic researchers. Herein, we report a three-component, reductive cascade, cross-coupling reaction for the arylalkylation of alkynes. A wide range of trisubstituted alkenes are obtained in good to high yields with excellent chemo- and stereoselectivity by switching between electrochemistry and photocatalysis. The E isomer of the product is obtained exclusively when the reaction is conducted with electricity and nickel, while the Z isomer is generated with high stereoselectivity when photo- and nickel dual catalysts are used. Moreover, photo-assisted electrochemically enabled nickel catalyzed protocol is demonstrated to selectively deliver Z-trisubstituted alkenes without the addition of photocatalysts.

The construction of trisubstituted alkenes with high stereoselectivity is challenging. Here, the authors realize the stereodivergent synthesis of such compounds via switching between electrochemistry, photochemistry and photoelectrochemistry.

Progress in the Electrochemical Reactions of Sulfonyl Compounds

Electrosynthesis has recently attracted more and more attention due to its great potential to replace chemical oxidants or reductants in molecule-electrode electron transfer. Sulfonyl compounds such as sulfonyl hydrazides, sulfinic acids (and their salts), sulfonyl halides have been discovered as practical precursors of several radicals. As electrochemical redox reactions can provide green and efficient pathways for the activation of sulfonyl compounds, studies for electrosynthesis have rapidly increased. Several types of radicals can be generated from anodic oxidation or cathodic reduction of sulfonyl compounds and can initiate fluoroalkylation, benzenesulfonylation, cyclization or rearrangement. In this Review, we summarize the electrosynthesis developments involving sulfonyl compounds mainly in the last decade.

Recent advances in organic electrosynthesis employing transition metal complexes as electrocatalysts

Organic electrosynthesis has been widely used as an environmentally conscious alternative to conventional methods for redox reactions because it utilizes electric current as a traceless redox agent instead of chemical redox agents. Indirect electrolysis employing a redox catalyst has received tremendous attention, since it provides various advantages compared to direct electrolysis. With indirect electrolysis, overpotential of electron transfer can be avoided, which is inherently milder, thus wide functional group tolerance can be achieved. Additionally, chemoselectivity, regioselectivity, and stereoselectivity can be tuned by the redox catalysts used in indirect electrolysis. Furthermore, electrode passivation can be avoided by preventing the formation of polymer films on the electrode surface. Common redox catalysts include N-oxyl radicals, hypervalent iodine species, halides, amines, benzoquinones (such as DDQ and tetrachlorobenzoquinone), and transition metals. In recent years, great progress has been made in the field of indirect organic electrosynthesis using transition metals as redox catalysts for reaction classes including C-H functionalization, radical cyclization, and cross-coupling of aryl halides-each owing to the diverse reactivity and accessible oxidation states of transition metals. Although various reviews of organic electrosynthesis are available, there is a lack of articles that focus on recent research progress in the area of indirect electrolysis using transition metals, which is the impetus for this review.

Iodine-mediated electrochemical C(sp3)-H cyclization: the synthesis of quinazolinone-fused N-heterocycles

An efficient iodine-mediated electrochemical C(sp³)-H cyclization was developed under mild conditions. A variety of functionalized quinazolinone-fused N-heterocycles can be obtained with good to excellent yields by virtue of this method. The reaction features a broad substrate scope and scalability, and is metal-free and chemical oxidant-free.

Advances on the Merger of Electrochemistry and Transition Metal Catalysis for Organic Synthesis

Synthetic organic electrosynthesis has grown in the past few decades by achieving many valuable transformations for synthetic chemists. Although electrocatalysis has been popular for improving selectivity and efficiency in a wide variety of energy-related applications, in the last two decades, there has been much interest in electrocatalysis to develop conceptually novel transformations, selective functionalization, and sustainable reactions. This review discusses recent advances in the combination of electrochemistry and homogeneous transition-metal catalysis for organic synthesis. The enabling transformations, synthetic applications, and mechanistic studies are presented alongside advantages as well as future directions to address the challenges of metal-catalyzed electrosynthesis.

Electrochemical metal- and oxidant-free synthesis of S-thiocarbamates

An expeditious synthetic strategy to access functionalized S-thiocarbamates was developed in good to excellent yields and with high current efficiencies. Readily available isocyanides and thiols were used as the starting materials under simple metal- and oxidant-free reaction conditions avoiding an inert atmosphere. The practical application of the present methodology was achieved by electrochemical synthesis of the herbicides prosulfocarb and pebulate. Furthermore, continuous electrochemical flow conditions using a graphite/Pt flow cell were used to obtain S-thiocarbamate compounds on a gram scale within a residence time of 35 min.

Cobalt-Catalyzed 2-(1-Methylhydrazinyl)pyridine-Assisted C-H Alkylation/Annulation: Mechanistic Insights and Rapid Access to Cyclopenta[c]isoquinolinone Derivatives

We have developed cobalt-catalyzed, bidentate 2-(1-methylhydrazinyl)pyridine (MHP)-directed C(sp²)-H alkylation/annulation of benzoic hydrazides with various alkenes. Notably, diverse cyclopenta[c]isoquinolinones and dihydroisoquinolinones were obtained via this functional group-tolerant protocol. The reaction can be performed on a gram scale while maintaining an excellent yield, and the directing group can be removed efficiently under mild conditions. Furthermore, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations provide an incisive understanding of the observed regioselectivities for different olefins.

C-H bond functionalization by high-valent cobalt catalysis: current progress, challenges and future perspectives

Over the last decade, high-valent cobalt catalysis has earned a place in the spotlight as a valuable tool for C-H activation and functionalization. Since the discovery of its unique reactivity, more and more attention has been directed towards the utilization of cobalt as an alternative to noble metal catalysts. In particular, Cp*Co(III) complexes, as well as simple Co(II) and Co(III) salts in combination with bidentate chelation assistance, have been extensively used for the development of novel transformations. In this review, we have demonstrated the existing trends in the C-H functionalization methodology using high-valent cobalt catalysis and highlighted the main challenges to overcome, as well as perspective directions, which need to be further developed in the future.

Decoding Directing Groups and Their Pivotal Role in C-H Activation

Synthetic organic chemistry has witnessed a plethora of functionalization and defunctionalization strategies. In this regard, C-H functionalization has been at the forefront due to the multifarious applications in the development of simple to complex molecular architectures and holds a brilliant prospect in drug development and discovery. Despite been explored tremendously by chemists, this functionalization strategy still enjoys the employment of novel metal catalysts as well metal-free organic ligands. Moreover, the switch to photo- and electrochemistry has widened our understanding of the alternative pathways via which a reaction can proceed and these strategies have garnered prominence when applied to C-H activation. Synthetic chemists have been foraging for new directing groups and templates for the selective activation of C-H bonds from a myriad of carbon-hydrogen bonds in aromatic as well as aliphatic systems. As a matter of fact, by varying the templates and directing groups, scientists found the answer to the challenge of distal C-H bond activation which remained an obstacle for a very long time. These templates have been frequently harnessed for selectively activating C-H bonds of natural products, drugs, and macromolecules decorated with multiple C-H bonds. This itself was a challenge before the commencement of this field as functionalization of a site other than the targeted site could modify and hamper the biological activity of the pharmacophore. Total synthesis and pharmacophore development often faces the difficulty of superfluous reaction steps towards selective functionalization. This obstacle has been solved by late-stage functionalization simply by harnessing C-H bond activation. Moreover, green chemistry and metal-free reaction conditions have seen light in the past few decades due to the rising concern about environmental issues. Therefore, metal-free catalysts or the usage of non-toxic metals have been recently showcased in a number of elegant works. Also, research groups across the world are developing rational strategies for directing group free or non-directed protocols that are just guided by ligands. This review encapsulates the research works pertinent to C-H bond activation and discusses the science devoted to it at the fundamental level. This review gives the readers a broad understanding of how these strategies work, the execution of various metal catalysts, and directing groups. This not only helps a budding scientist towards the commencement of his/her research but also helps a matured mind searching out for selective functionalization. A detailed picture of this field and its progress with time has been portrayed in lucid scientific language with a motive to inculcate and educate scientific minds about this beautiful strategy with an overview of the most relevant and significant works of this era. The unique trait of this review is the detailed description and classification of various directing groups and their utility over a wide substrate scope. This allows an experimental chemist to understand the applicability of this domain and employ it over any targeted substrate.

Structurally Diverse Synthesis of Five-, Six-, and Seven-Membered Benzosultams through Electrochemical Cyclization

We have developed a metal- and oxidant-free approach to structurally diverse synthesis of benzosultams from aryl sulfonamides through an electrochemical cyclization. Upon variation of the ortho substituent on aryl sulfonamides, five-, six-, and seven-membered benzosultams were efficiently assembled in an atom- and resource-economic manner. The generality of the process is demonstrated by the formation of five- to seven-membered cyclic products from 42 substrates bearing substituents with different electronic effects and steric hindrance.

Redox-Neutral Cross-Coupling Amination with Weak N-Nucleophiles: Arylation of Anilines, Sulfonamides, Sulfoximines, Carbamates, and Imines via Nickelaelectrocatalysis

A nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling amination with weak nitrogen nucleophiles is described. Aryl halides as well as aryl tosylates can be efficiently coupled with a series of weak N-nucleophiles, including anilines, sulfonamides, sulfoximines, carbamates, and imines via concerted paired electrolysis. Notably, electron-deficient anilines and sulfonamides are also suitable substrates. Interestingly, when benzophenone imine is applied in the arylation, the product selectivity toward the formation of amine and imine product can be addressed by a base switch. In addition, the alternating current mode can be successfully applied. DFT calculations support a facilitated reductive elimination pathway.

Electrocatalysis as an enabling technology for organic synthesis

Electrochemistry has recently gained increased attention as a versatile strategy for achieving challenging transformations at the forefront of synthetic organic chemistry. Electrochemistry's unique ability to generate highly reactive radical and radical ion intermediates in a controlled fashion under mild conditions has inspired the development of a number of new electrochemical methodologies for the preparation of valuable chemical motifs. Particularly, recent developments in electrosynthesis have featured an increased use of redox-active electrocatalysts to further enhance control over the selective formation and downstream reactivity of these reactive intermediates. Furthermore, electrocatalytic mediators enable synthetic transformations to proceed in a manner that is mechanistically distinct from purely chemical methods, allowing for the subversion of kinetic and thermodynamic obstacles encountered in conventional organic synthesis. This review highlights key innovations within the past decade in the area of synthetic electrocatalysis, with emphasis on the mechanisms and catalyst design principles underpinning these advancements. A host of oxidative and reductive electrocatalytic methodologies are discussed and are grouped according to the classification of the synthetic transformation and the nature of the electrocatalyst.

Copper-mediated oxidative C-H/N-H activations with alkynes by removable hydrazides

The efficient copper-mediated oxidative C-H alkynylation of benzhydrazides was accomplished with terminal alkynes. Thus, a heteroaromatic removable N-2-pyridylhydrazide allowed for domino C-H/N-H functionalization. The approach featured remarkable functional group compatibility and ample substrate scope. Thereby, highly functionalized aromatic and heteroaromatic isoindolin-1-ones were accessed with high efficacy with rate-limiting C-H cleavage.

Evolution of Earth-Abundant 3 d-Metallaelectro-Catalyzed C-H Activation: From Chelation-Assistance to C-H Functionalization without Directing Groups

Catalyzed C-H functionalizations have emerged as a transformative platform for molecular syntheses. Despite of indisputable advances, oxidative C-H activations have been largely restricted to precious transition metals and stoichiometric amounts of chemical oxidants. In contrast, we herein discuss the potential of earth-abundant, environmentally-benign 3d transition metals for C-H activation, which has recently gained major momentum. Thus, a strategy for full resource economy has been established in our group, with green electricity as a renewable redox agent, giving valuable hydrogen as the sole byproduct under redox mediator-free conditions. In this account, we detail our accomplishments in 3d metallaelectrocatalysis towards green syntheses until March 2021.

Single-Atom Catalysts: A Sustainable Pathway for the Advanced Catalytic Applications

A heterogeneous catalyst is a backbone of modern sustainable green industries; and understanding the relationship between its structure and properties is the key for its advancement. Recently, many upscaling synthesis strategies for the development of a variety of respectable control atomically precise heterogeneous catalysts are reported and explored for various important applications in catalysis for energy and environmental remediation. Precise atomic-scale control of catalysts has allowed to significantly increase activity, selectivity, and in some cases stability. This approach has proved to be relevant in various energy and environmental related technologies such as fuel cell, chemical reactors for organic synthesis, and environmental remediation. Therefore, this review aims to critically analyze the recent progress on single-atom catalysts (SACs) application in oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, hydrogen evolution reaction, and chemical and/or electrochemical organic transformations. Finally, opportunities that may open up in the future are summarized, along with suggesting new applications for possible exploitation of SACs.

Organic Electrochemistry: Molecular Syntheses with Potential

Efficient and selective molecular syntheses are paramount to inter alia biomolecular chemistry and material sciences as well as for practitioners in chemical, agrochemical, and pharmaceutical industries. Organic electrosynthesis has undergone a considerable renaissance and has thus in recent years emerged as an increasingly viable platform for the sustainable molecular assembly. In stark contrast to early strategies by innate reactivity, electrochemistry was recently merged with modern concepts of organic synthesis, such as transition-metal-catalyzed transformations for inter alia C-H functionalization and asymmetric catalysis. Herein, we highlight the unique potential of organic electrosynthesis for sustainable synthesis and catalysis, showcasing key aspects of exceptional selectivities, the synergism with photocatalysis, or dual electrocatalysis, and novel mechanisms in metallaelectrocatalysis until February of 2021.

Cobalt-Catalyzed C-H Activation/Annulation of Benzamides with Fluorine-Containing Alkynes: A Route to 3- and 4-Fluoroalkylated Isoquinolinones

The C-H activation/annulation reaction of various benzamides with fluoroalkylated alkynes in the presence of a Co(acac)₂·2H₂O catalyst proceeded very smoothly to give the corresponding 3- and 4-fluoroalkylated isoquinolinones in excellent yields with approximately 70% regioselectivities. These regioisomers could be successfully separated and obtained in pure form. Major or minor regioisomers were determined as 4- or 3-fluoroalkylated isoquinolinones, respectively, based on X-ray crystallographic analyses.
