Abstract
A mild and highly selective reduction of alkenes and alkynes using Mn/water is described. The highly controlled generation of H2 allows the selective reduction of these compounds in the presence of labile functional groups under mild and environmentally acceptable conditions.

Abstract
13 C-labelled ω-hydroxy-carboxylic acids HO2 13 C-(CH2 )n -CH2 OH or HO2 C-(CH2 )n -13 CH2 OH (n = 12, 16, 20, 28) with 13 C labels selectively introduced either at the carboxy group or at the primary alcohol function at the end of the hydrocarbon chain have been synthesized. Different synthetic strategies had to be applied depending on the position of the label, the chain length of the respective synthetic target and due to economic considerations. 13 C labels in general were introduced by nucleophilic substitution of a suitable leaving group with labelled potassium cyanide and subsequent hydrolysis of the nitriles to produce the corresponding labelled carboxy functions, which may also be reduced to give the labelled primary alcohol group. All new compounds are characterized by GC/MS, IR and NMR methods as well as by elemental analysis.

Abstract
An alternative method to copper-catalyzed conjugate addition followed by enolate silylation for the synthesis of β-disubstituted silyl enol ether products (R(1)(R(2))HCCH═C(OSiR(4)(3))R(3)) is presented. This method uses haloarenes instead of nucleophilic aryl reagents. Nickel ligated to either neocuproine or bipyridine couples an α,β-unsaturated ketone or aldehyde (R(2)HC═CHC(O)R(3)) with an organic halide (R(1)-X) in the presence of a trialkylchlorosilane reagent (Cl-SiR(4)(3)). Reactions are assembled on the benchtop and tolerate a variety of functional groups (aldehyde, ketone, nitrile, sulfone, pentafluorosulfur, and N-aryltrifluoroacetamide), electron-rich iodoarenes, and electron-poor haloarenes. Mechanistic studies have confirmed the first example of a catalytic reductive conjugate addition of organic halides that proceeds via an allylnickel intermediate. Selectivity is attributed to (1) rapid, selective reaction of LNi(0) with chlorotriethylsilane and enone in the presence of other organic electrophiles, and (2) minimization of enone dimerization by ligand steric effects.

Abstract
Indium tri(isopropoxide)-catalyzed Meerwein-Ponndorf-Verley reduction of aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes in 2-propanol gave selectively the corresponding primary alcohols in good to excellent yields at room temperature. A wide range of functional groups including alkene, ether, ketone, ester, nitrile, and nitro were tolerated under the optimum reaction conditions. Chemoselective reductions were also achieved not only between aromatic aldehyde, aromatic ketone, and epoxide but also between aliphatic aldehyde and alkene.
