Theoretical Thermochemistry: Ab Initio Heat of Formation for Hydroxylamine

Smart Host-Guest Energetic Material Constructed by Stabilizing Energetic Fuel Hydroxylamine in Lattice Cavity of 2,4,6,8,10,12-Hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane Significantly Enhanced the Detonation, Safety, Propulsion, and Combustion Performances

The host-guest inclusion strategy has become a promising method for developing novel high-energy density materials (HEDMs). The selection of functional guest molecules was a strategic project, as it can not only enhance the detonation performance of host explosives but can also modify some of their suboptimal performances. Here, to improve the propulsion and combustion performances of 2,4,6,8,10,12-hexanitrohexaazaisowurtzitane (HNIW), a novel energetic-energetic host-guest inclusion explosive was obtained by incorporating energetic rocket fuel, hydroxylamine (HA), into the lattice cavities of HNIW. Based on their perfect space matching, the crystallographic density of HNIW-HA was determined to be 2.00 g/cm³ at 296 K, which has reached the gold standard regarding the density of HEDMs. HNIW-HA also showed higher thermal stability (T_d = 245.9 °C) and safety (H₅₀ = 16.8 cm) and superior detonation velocity (D_V = 9674 m/s) than the ε-HNIW. Additionally, because of the excellent combustion performance of HA, HNIW-HA possessed higher propulsion performances, including combustion speed (S_C = 39.5 mg/s), combustion heat (Q_C = 8661 J/g), and specific impulse (I_sp = 276.4 s), than ε-HNIW. Thus, the host-guest inclusion strategy has potential to surpass the limitations of energy density and suboptimal performances of single explosives and become a strategy for developing multipurpose intermolecular explosives.

Solid-State and Gas-Phase Structures and Energetic Properties of the Dangerous Methyl and Fluoromethyl Nitrates

An improved synthesis of the simplest nitric acid ester, methyl nitrate, and a new synthesis of fluoromethyl nitrate use the metathesis of the corresponding iodomethanes with silver nitrate. Both compounds were identified by spectroscopy and the structures determined for in situ grown crystals by X-ray diffraction as well as in the gas phase by electron diffraction. Fluorination leads to structures with shorter C-O and N-O bonds, has an energetically destabilizing effect and increases friction sensitivity, but decreases detonation performance.

Group Additivity Methods without Group Values

The conventional group additivity (GA) formalism may be identically reduced to a stoichiometric and thermochemical analysis of a special class of reactions referred to as GA reactions, that is, reactions that preserve the type and number of groups. Within this approach, the performance (error) of a GA scheme is determined by the stoichiometry and enthalpy changes of the GA reactions. That is, the lower the enthalpy changes of the GA reactions, the better the performance of a GA scheme. Ideally, an exact GA scheme would imply any conceivable GA reaction to be precisely thermoneutral, that is, have a zero enthalpy change. A somewhat surprising result is that, additionally, the performance of GA methods is influenced by a purely stoichiometric factor of GA reactions. These findings do not improve the performance of a given GA scheme. Rather, it is an interpretation that leads to a deeper understanding of the performance of a GA scheme and may be used in designing more accurate GA schemes.

Thermochemical Properties of HxNO Molecules and Ions from ab Initio Electronic Structure Theory

Coupled-cluster calculations through noniterative triple excitations were used to compute optimized structures, atomization energies at 0 K, and heats of formation at 0 and 298 K for NH2O, HNOH, NH2O-, NH2OH+, NH3OH+, HNO-, and HON. These molecules are important in the gas-phase oxidation of NH3, as well as its solution-phase chemistry. The O-H, N-H, and N-O bond energies of these molecules are given and compared. The N-H and O-H bond energies are quite low, and, for NH2OH, the O-H bond is weaker than the N-H bond (by 7.5 kcal/mol). The energetics for a variety of ionic chemical processes in the gas phase, including the electron affinities of NH2O and HNO, the proton affinities of NH2O and NH2OH, and the acidities of NH2OH and NH2O, are given. The compounds are weak bases and weak acids in the gas phase. Solvation effects were included at the PCM and COSMO levels. The COSMO model gave better values than the PCM model. The relative values for pKa for NH2O and NH2OH are in good agreement with the experimental values, showing both compounds to be very strong bases in aqueous solution with NH2OH being the stronger base by 1.8 pK units at the COSMO level, compared to the experimental pK difference of 1.1+/-0.3 pK units. We predict that NH2OH+ will not be formed in aqueous solution, because it is a very strong acid. Based on the known acidity of NH3OH+, we predict pKa(NH2OH+)=-5.4 at the COSMO level, which is in good agreement with the experimental estimate of pKa(NH2OH+)=-7+/-2.
