Effect of SDS on the Self-Assembly Behavior of the PEO−PPO−PEO Triblock Copolymer (EO)20(PO)70(EO)20

Structural and therapeutic properties of salicylic acid-solubilized Pluronic solutions and hydrogels

Salicylic acid (SA) finds extensive applications in the treatment of rheumatic and skin diseases because of its analgesic, anti-inflammatory and exfoliating properties. As it is lipophilic in nature, there is a need for appropriate delivery systems to harness these properties for different applications. Herein, we examined the suitability of Pluronic P123/F127 micellar systems as delivery media by investigating the structural, flow and antimicrobial properties of P123/F127-SA solutions and hydrogels using DLS, SANS, rheological and zone inhibition measurement techniques. SA modulates the aggregation characteristics of these surfactant systems and brings about spherical-to-worm-like micelle-to-vesicular structural transitions in the hydrophobic Pluronic P123 system, a spherical-to-worm-like micellar transition in the mixed P123/F127 system and an onset of inter-micellar attraction in the hydrophilic Pluronic F127 system. SA-solubilized systems of both hydrophobic and hydrophilic Pluronics inhibit the growth of Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria with comparable MIC values. This suggests that the interaction of SA molecules with the bacterial cell membrane remains unobstructed upon encapsulation in Pluronic micelles. F127 hydrogel-based SA formulations with rheological properties suitable for topical applications and up to 15% SA loading were prepared. These will be useful SA ointments as F127 is an FDA-approved excipient for topical drug delivery applications. The results indicate that Pluronics remain effective as delivery agents for SA and exhibit interesting structural polymorphism upon its solubilization.

Impact of small molecule and reverse poloxamer addition on the micellization and gelation mechanisms of poloxamer hydrogels

Poloxamer 407 (P407) is widely used for targeted drug-delivery because it exhibits thermoresponsive gelation behavior near body temperature, stemming from a disorder-to-order transition. Hydrophobic small molecules can be encapsulated within P407; however, these additives often negatively impact the rheological properties and lower the gelation temperatures of the hydrogels, limiting their clinical utility. Here we investigate the impact of adding two BAB reverse poloxamers (RPs), 25R4 and 31R1, on the thermal transitions, rheological properties, and assembled structures of P407 both with and without incorporated small molecules. By employing a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), rheology, and small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), we determine distinct mechanisms for RP incorporation. While 25R4 addition promotes inter-micelle bridge formation, the highly hydrophobic 31R1 co-micellizes with P407. Small molecule addition lowers thermal transition temperatures and increases the micelle size, while RP addition mitigates the decreases in modulus traditionally associated with small molecule incorporation. This fundamental understanding yields new strategies for tuning the mechanical and structural properties of the hydrogels, enabling design of drug-loaded formulations with ideal thermal transitions for a range of clinical applications.

Sodium dodecyl sulfate modulates the structure and rheological properties of Pluronic F108-poly(acrylic acid) coacervates)

Micelles formed within coacervate phases can impart functional properties, but it is unclear if this micellization provides mechanical reinforcement of the coacervate whereby the micelles act as high functionality crosslinkers. Here, we examine how sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) influences the structure and properties of Pluronic F108-polyacrylic acid (PAA) coacervates as SDS is known to decrease the aggregation number of Pluronic micelles. Increasing the SDS concentration leads to larger water content in the coacervate and an increase in the relative concentration of PAA to the other solids. Rheological characterization with small angle oscillatory shear (SAOS) demonstrates that these coacervates are viscoelastic liquids with the moduli decreasing with the addition of the SDS. The loss factor (tan δ) initially increases linearly with the addition of SDS, but a step function increase in the loss factor occurs near the reported CMC of SDS. However, this change in rheological properties does not appear to be correlated with any large scale structural differences in the coacervate as determined by small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) with no signature of Pluronic micelles in the coacervate when SDS concentration is >4 mM during formation of the coacervate, which is less than that observed (6 mM SDS) in initial Pluronic F108 solution despite the higher polymer concentration in the coacervate. These results suggest that the mechanical properties of polyelectrolyte-non-ionic surfactant coacervates are driven by the efficicacy of binding between the complexing species driving the coacervate, which can be disrupted by competitive binding of the SDS to the Pluronic.

Structure and composition of mixed micelles formed by nonionic block copolymers and ionic surfactants in water determined by small-angle neutron scattering with contrast variation

HYPOTHESIS

Complex fluids comprising polymers and surfactants exhibit interesting properties which depend on the overall composition and solvent quality. The ultimate determinants of the macroscopic properties are the nano-scale association domains. Hence it is important to ascertain the structure and composition of the domains, and how they respond to the overall composition.

EXPERIMENTS

The structure and composition of mixed micelles formed in aqueous solution between poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) block copolymers (Pluronics or Poloxamers) and the ionic surfactant sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) are determined from an analysis of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) intensity data obtained at different contrasts. Different polymers and concentrations have been probed.

FINDINGS

The SDS + Pluronic mixed micelles include polymer and some water in the micelle core that is formed primarily by alkyl chains. This is different than what was previously reported, but is consistent with a variety of experimental observations. This is the first report on the structure of SDS + Pluronic P123 (EO₁₉PO₆₉EO₁₉) assemblies. The effects on the mixed micelle structure and composition of the surfactant concentration and the polymer hydrophobicity are discussed here in the context of interactions between the different components.

Obtaining of Mesoporous Aluminosilicates with High Hydrothermal Stability by Composite Organic Templates: Utility and Mechanism

We have reported the synthesis of mesoporous aluminosilicates (MAs) with high hydrothermal stability via assembly of basic characteristic structure units of typical microporous zeolite Y. In spite of this, high consumption of organic template and H₂O remains a major obstacle to its industrial application. Herein, a facile and effective strategy called "composite templates" was employed to decrease significantly the amount of P123 and H₂O. In this method, composite micelles of P123/poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) could be more easily dispersed in the solution due to the lowering of water's surface tension caused by the free hydroxyl groups of PVA. Moreover, the improved assembly ability of composite micelles in high concentration solution leads to the synthesis of hydrothermally stable MAs with 45% decrease of organic template P123 and 81% that of water amount. It was found that by the introduction of composite templates, the textural properties such as the surface area of materials, volume of pore, size of pore, and thickness were enlarged simultaneously. Meanwhile, this article presented an understanding into the assembly of composite micelles in the process of synthesis of MAs.

Several Shapes of Single Crystalline Gold Nanomaterials Prepared in the Surfactant Mixture of CTAB and Pluronics

Twin structures in gold nanomaterials are destined because they reduce the severe strains in the misfit region of nanostructures. Defect-free single crystalline plasmonic nanomaterials gain interests these days as the integration of plasmonic materials or plasmons into electronic devices and circuits becomes more common. In this study, without subtle experimental adjustments, such as pH or halide additives, several shapes of single crystalline gold nanoparticles (NPs) are prepared in the surfactant mixture of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and Pluronic triblock copolymers. The synthesized NPs are primarily composed of {100} planes with small numbers of particles possessing a [110] zone axis. Pluronic copolymers with low number average molecular weights (M _n), such as L-31 (M _n ≈ 1100) and L-64 (M _n ≈ 2900), prefer anisotropic nanorods with the aspect ratios of 4.3 and 3.0, respectively, while Pluronics with high M _n values, such as F-68 (M _n ≈ 8400) and F-108 (M _n ≈ 14 600), favor more concentric and isotropic cube-like NPs. Extended micelles are believed to form in Pluronics with low M _n values in which hydrophobic cores are merged with the increase of temperature, while the corona regions that are composed of long tails of PEO prevent the merge of hydrophobic cores, and the growth of the micelles is limited in Pluronic copolymers with high M _n values. The catalytic degradation reactions of methyl orange are conducted, and rather than isotropic particles, gold nanorods exhibit better catalytic performances. More hydrophilic environment and the steric alignment of rigid aromatic structures of methyl orange along the nanorods are thought to contribute to the catalytic activities. Overall, highly confined geometries of the appropriately swollen micellar templates of Pluronics and CTAB, which is not so hydrophobic as for the formation of contracted deswollen templates and for the inhibition of the growth of NPs, and which is not so hydrophilic as for the formation of coarse templates and for the formation of isotropic spheres with varying sizes, are believed as the main factor for the formation of single crystalline gold NPs.

Depletion Forces Induced by Mixed Micelles of Nonionic Block Copolymers and Anionic Surfactants

Depletion forces were measured between a silica sphere and a silica plate in solutions containing nonionic Pluronic P123 poly(ethylene oxide-b-propylene oxide-b-ethylene oxide) triblock copolymers and anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) surfactants using colloidal probe atomic force microscopy. Prior research established synergistic depletion force enhancement in solutions containing SDS and unimeric Pluronic F108 block copolymers via formation of large pseudo-polyelectrolyte complexes. The current work addresses a more complex system where the polymer is above its critical micelle concentration, and surfactant binding alters not only the size and charge of the micelles but also the number of polymers per micelle. Force profiles were measured in 10 000 ppm P123 (1 wt %, corresponding to 1.72 mM based on average molar mass) solutions containing SDS at concentrations up to 64 mM and compared to micellar P123 solutions and to P123-free SDS solutions. Whereas force profiles in the SDS-free micellar P123 solutions were purely repulsive, P123/SDS complexation produced synergistic depletion force enhancement for SDS concentrations between 2 and 32 mM. The synergism that occurred within a finite SDS concentration range was explained by comparing the hydrodynamic size, molar mass, charge, and concentration of depletants in P123/SDS mixtures and their respective single-component solutions obtained with the aid of dynamic light scattering, static light scattering, and dodecyl sulfate ion-selective electrode measurements. These measurements showed that complexation produced effects that would be mutually counteracting with respect to depletion forces: decreasing the mixed micelle hydrodynamic diameter relative to SDS-free P123 micelles would tend to weaken depletion forces, while adding charge and decreasing the aggregation number of polymers per micelle (thereby increasing the number concentration of micellar depletants) would tend to strengthen depletion forces.

Association between Nonionic Amphiphilic Polymer and Ionic Surfactant in Aqueous Solutions: Effect of Polymer Hydrophobicity and Micellization

The interaction in aqueous solutions of surfactants with amphiphilic polymers can be more complex than the surfactant interactions with homopolymers. Interactions between the common ionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and nonionic amphiphilic polymers of the poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-PPO-PEO) type have been probed utilizing a variety of experimental techniques. The polymer amphiphiles studied here are Pluronic F127 (EO₁₀₀PO₆₅EO₁₀₀) and Pluronic P123 (EO₁₉PO₆₉EO₁₉), having the same length PPO block but different length PEO blocks and, accordingly, very different critical micellization concentrations (CMC). With increasing surfactant concentration in aqueous solutions of fixed polymer content, SDS interacts with unassociated PEO-PPO-PEO molecules to first form SDS-rich SDS/Pluronic assemblies and then free SDS micelles. SDS interacts with micellized PEO-PPO-PEO to form Pluronic-rich SDS/Pluronic assemblies, which upon further increase in surfactant concentration, break down and transition into SDS-rich SDS/Pluronic assemblies, followed by free SDS micelle formation. The SDS-rich SDS/Pluronic assemblies exhibit polyelectrolyte characteristics. The interactions and mode of association between nonionic macromolecular amphiphiles and short-chain ionic amphiphiles are affected by the polymer hydrophobicity and its concentration in the aqueous solution. For example, SDS binds to Pluronic F127 micelles at much lower concentrations (~0.01 mM) when compared to Pluronic P123 micelles (~1 mM). The critical association concentration (CAC) values of SDS in aqueous PEO-PPO-PEO solutions are much lower than CAC in aqueous PEO homopolymer solutions.

Coarse-Grained Molecular Dynamic and Experimental Studies on Self-Assembly Behavior of Nonionic F127/HS15 Mixed Micellar Systems

The self-assembly of a nonionic triblock copolymer (F127) and a nonionic surfactant (HS15) has been investigated due to favorable changes in properties in their mixtures. The effect of the mixing ratio on the self-assembly process and on the structural stability of the mixtures was studied by coarse-grained molecular dynamic simulation (CGMD) and experimental measurements (transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering measurement, drug loading stability analysis, and fluorescence spectroscopy measurement). The CGMD provided the information on self-assembly behavior. The microstructure and micellar stability are affected by different proportions of F127/HS15. Pure HS15 molecules (system I) can rapidly form stable aggregates driven by strong hydrophobic force, including two steps: the formation of seed clusters and the fusion of them. At low F127 ratio (system II), the self-assembly process is dynamic unstable, and a volatile "coil/cluster-like" aggregate is formed under the single "binding" effect. As the ratio of added F127 increase, such as system III, stable "lotus-seedpod-like" aggregates form under the double effects of "binding plus wrapping". Its dynamic equilibrium can be achieved rapidly. The experimental results approved the assumption of "different mixing ratio with different structural stability" and even different loading stability of F127/HS15 systems for drugs with different log P, such as PUE and DTX, which means different loading area for them in the micellar systems at different mixing ratios because of less hydrophobic microdomains with the increase of F127 molecules.

Kinetics and Energetics of Ultrafast Bimolecular Photoinduced Electron Transfer Reactions in Pluronic-Surfactant Supramolecular Assemblies

Understanding the kinetics and energetics of photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions in constrained media has attracted considerable research interest, as constrained media provide a handle to tune the microenvironments and consequently the mechanisms of PET reactions. In this study, PET reactions between excited 7-aminocoumarin acceptors and ground-state N,N-dimethylaniline (DMAN) donor have been investigated in mixed micellar media composed of triblock copolymer, P123, and anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), with varying SDS-to-P123 molar ratios (n values). The objective is to elucidate the role of the n values in the rates and energetics of PET reactions over the entire time range from the subpicosecond to the subnanosecond domain, especially in regard to the applicability of the two-dimensional ET (2DET) mechanism. It is observed that by changing the n values, there is a significant change in the hydration characteristics of the SDS-P123 mixed micelles, which in turn changes the kinetics to energetic correlations for the PET reactions. Fluorescence from the excited coumarin acceptors undergoes substantial quenching due to PET from DMAN donor in all of the studied micelles as evidenced from steady-state, subnanosecond time-resolved (TR) and ultrafast (subpicosecond/femtosecond) fluorescence up-conversion measurements. The quenching rate constants (k_q), estimated from subnanosecond TR fluorescence studies, and the individual component-wise decay rates (τ_i^-1), estimated from up-conversion measurements, increase gradually with increasing n value, corroborating well with the sequentially increased micropolarity of the mixed micelles. Interestingly, it is observed that the correlations of either k_q (from subnanosecond studies) or τ_i^-1 (from femtosecond studies) with the reaction exergonicity (-ΔG°) show the noteworthy Marcus inversion (MI) behavior in a very consistent and similar manner for the entire time window, from subpicoseconds to subnanoseconds. The onset of MI always appears at an exergonicity (-ΔG°_MI) much lower than solvent reorganization energy (λ_s), suggesting the involvement of 2DET mechanism throughout the subpicosecond to subnanosecond time domains. The present results thus provide a comprehensive picture of the kinetics and energetics of the PET reactions in constrained media for the whole time span and unequivocally establish the applicability of 2DET mechanism for the PET reactions in constrained media, eliminating any apprehensions about the effect of time resolution of the subnanosecond setup on the observed Marcus inversion behavior. This is indeed an important finding, providing valuable insights for PET reactions in constrained media, which has not been explored explicitly in any of the previous studies. Observation of MI behavior and the modulations in the PET reactions by simply changing the composition of SDS in the SDS-P123 mixed micelles are noteworthy findings of the present study and are expected to find suitable applications for better utilization and outcome of the PET reactions.

Spectroscopic probing of the refolding of an unfolded protein through the formation of mixed-micelles

We report the unfolding of the globular protein, Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) induced by anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and subsequently monitored the refolding of this denatured BSA using triblock copolymers F127 and P123 through the formation of mixed micelles. Our study exclusively represents the reversibility of this unfolding-refolding process using pluronic triblock copolymers F127/P123 as refolding agents. We confirm the recovery of its native state from its denatured state estimating the α-helical structure of the denatured protein from the CD data which support our steady state fluorescence spectra monitoring the fluorescence of the intrinsic Trp molecules present in BSA. Time resolved study also corroborates the stepwise recovery of the denatured BSA as well as the reversibility of the processes. Isothermal Titration Calorimetry (ITC) data explain the negligible interactions between the triblock copolymers and the native state of BSA. The high binding constant of SDS and triblock copolymers probably play the crucial role in the stepwise recovery of the unfolded BSA followed by reversibility of the refolding processes through the formation of the mixed micelles. The mechanism of mixed-micelle formation has been substantiated by the fact that the Guanidine Hydrochloride denatured BSA does not react with F127/P123 whereby no recovery of the protein was observed.

Polymer-assisted drug sequestration from plasma protein by a surfactant with curtailed denaturing capacity

The capability of a surfactant to sequester a drug bound to plasma protein was investigated using steady-state and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques. Surfactants are known to denature protein, and hence are not suitable for the sequestration of a drug from protein. Herein, we show that the denaturing capacity of a surfactant is curtailed completely and its drug sequestration power is enhanced in the presence of biocompatible Pluronic micelles due to the formation of unique supramolecular assemblies. Further, our detailed studies indicate that the concentration of surfactant required for the sequestration of a drug is less than its critical micellar concentration (CMC). The extent of sequestration of drug by polymer-surfactant supramolecular assemblies can be tuned finely by controlling the concentration of surfactant. Detailed analysis showed that up to ∼85% sequestration of a drug from plasma protein could be achieved using a sub-CMC concentration of surfactant. Our results clearly show that controlled sequestration of a drug from plasma protein can be achieved with a reduction in the protein denaturing properties of surfactants.

Effect of Ionic Liquids as Cosurfactants on Photoinduced Electron Transfer in Tetronic Micelles

This study investigates the role of varying alkyl chain lengths of a series of surface-active 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([C _nMIm][BF₄], n = 4, 6, and 10) ionic liquids (ILs) as cosurfactants in modifying the micellar characteristics of a tetronic star-block copolymer, T1304, and the consequent effects on bimolecular photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions carried out in these T1304-IL mixed micellar systems. Using coumarin 153 as the probe dye and following ground-state absorption, steady-state fluorescence, and time-resolved emission measurements, the micropolarity, microviscosity, and solvent relaxation dynamics in the micellar palisade layer have been revealed both in pure T1304 and in T1304-IL systems. With increasing alkyl chain length of the ILs, the palisade layer of the micelles gradually becomes more polar and less viscous, suggesting better incorporation of the longer alkyl chain length ILs as cosurfactants into the T1304 micelles. The bimolecular PET reactions, involving 7-aminocoumarins as acceptors and N, N-dimethylaniline as the donor, are considerably modulated in T1304 micelles by the presence of the ILs, the effect being more prominent for ILs with longer alkyl chain lengths. In all of the micellar systems, correlations of the electron transfer (ET) kinetics with the reaction exergonicity (-Δ G⁰) show clear Marcus inversion (MI) behavior where onsets of MI invariably appear at significantly lower exergonicities, suggesting the involvement of a two-dimensional ET mechanism. Interestingly, the Marcus correlations display significant variations, namely, enhanced reaction rates and gradual shift in the onset of MI toward higher exergonicity, as longer alkyl chain length ILs are sequentially introduced as cosurfactants. From the observed results, it is convincingly realized that 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium-based ILs can be used satisfactorily as cosurfactants in tetronic star-block copolymer solutions to modulate PET reactions very significantly for their better utilizations in suitable applied areas.

Shape Engineering of Biomass-Derived Nanoparticles from Hollow Spheres to Bowls through Solvent-Induced Buckling

The realization of asymmetric hollow carbonaceous nanostructures remains a great challenge, especially when biomass is chosen as the carbon resource through hydrothermal carbonization (HTC). Herein, a simple and straightforward solvent-induced buckling strategy is demonstrated for the synthesis of asymmetric spherical and bowl-like carbonaceous nanomaterials. The formation of the bowl-like morphology was attributed to the buckling of the spherical shells induced by the dissolution of the oligomers. The bowl-like particles prepared through this solvent-driven approach demonstrated a well-controlled morphology and a uniform particle size of approximately 360 nm. The obtained nanospheres and nanobowls were loaded with CoS₂ nanoparticles to act as heterogeneous catalysts for the selective hydrogenation of aromatic nitro compounds. As expected, the CoS₂ /nanobowls catalyst showed good tolerance to a wide scope of reducible groups and afforded both high activity and selectivity in almost all the tested substrates.

Pluronic®-bile salt mixed micelles

The present study was aimed to examine the interaction of two bile salts viz. sodium cholate (NaC) and sodium deoxycholate (NaDC) with three ethylene polyoxide-polypropylene polyoxide (PEO-PPO-PEO) triblock copolymers with similar PPO but varying PEO micelles with a focus on the effect of pH on mixed micelles. Mixed micelles of moderately hydrophobic Pluronic^® P123 were examined in the presence of two bile salts and compared with those from very hydrophobic L121 and very hydrophilic F127. Both the bile salts increase the cloud point (CP) of copolymer solution and decreased apparent micelle hydrodynamic diameter (D_h). SANS study revealed that P123 forms small spherical micelles showing a decrease in size on progressive addition of bile salts. The negatively charged mixed micelles contained fewer P123 molecules but progressively rich in bile salt. NaDC being more hydrophobic displays more pronounced effect than NaC. Interestingly, NaC shows micellar growth in acidic media which has been attributed to the formation of bile acids by protonation of carboxylate ion and subsequent solubilization. In contrast, NaDC showed phase separation at higher concentration. Nuclear Overhauser effect spectroscopy (NOESY) experiments provided information on interaction and location of bile salts in micelles. Results are discussed in terms of hydrophobicity of bile salts and Pluronics^® and the site of bile salt in polymer micelles. Proposed molecular interactions are useful to understand more about bile salts which play important role in physiological processes.

Triblock-Copolymer-Assisted Mixed-Micelle Formation Results in the Refolding of Unfolded Protein

The present work reports a new strategy for triblock-copolymer-assisted refolding of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-induced unfolded serum protein human serum albumin (HSA) by mixed-micelle formation of SDS with poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer EO₂₀PO₆₈EO₂₀ (P123) under physiological conditions. The steady-state and time-resolve fluorescence results show that the unfolding of HSA induced by SDS occurs in a stepwise manner through three different phases of binding of SDS, which is followed by a saturation of interaction. Interestingly, the addition of polymeric surfactant P123 to the unfolded protein results in the recovery of ∼87% of its α-helical structure, which was lost during SDS-induced unfolding. This is further corroborated by the return of the steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence decay parameters of the intrinsic tryptophan (Trp214) residue of HSA to the initial nativelike condition. The isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) data also substantiates that there is almost no interaction between P123 and the native state of the protein. However, the mixed-micelle formation, accompanied by substantial binding affinities, removes the bound SDS molecules from the scaffolds of the unfolded state of the protein. On the basis of our experiments, we conclude that the formation of mixed micelles between SDS and P123 plays a pivotal role in refolding the protein back to its nativelike state.

Modulation of Excited State Proton Transfer Dynamics of a Lactim-Lactam Tautomeric System in Different Block Copolymer-Surfactant Aggregates

The proton transfer (PT) process in 1-(2-hydroxy-5-chloro-phenyl)-3,5-dioxo-1H-imidazo-[3,4-b]isoindole (ADCL) has been studied in three different copolymer-surfactant supramolecular assemblies prepared in aqueous 1% P123 triblock copolymer micellar solution with varying concentrations of surfactants (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and triton-X-100 (TX 100)). The aim of the present study is to monitor the modulation of the PT process by changing the degree of micellar hydration inside the P123 micelle with the addition of the three different surfactants (two ionic and one non ionic), that is, in P123-surfactant aggregates. Besides, a comparative study has been done with these results with those in water, pure P123 micellar medium and three different surfactants medium. The micropolarity measurement and time-resolved fluorescence anisotropic measurements have been performed to evaluate the binding location of the probe (ADCL) in the three different copolymer-surfactant supramolecular assemblies. It is found that the micropolarity at the binding site of the molecule in the various environments largely influences the PT rate of ADCL. The PT rate is found to be the slowest in the P123 medium and in P123-surfactant aggregates the rate becomes faster as the micropolarity around the binding locations of the molecule in these aggregates is higher in comparison to that in P123 micelle.

Tuning of electron transfer reactions in pluronic-surfactant supramolecular assemblies

Photoinduced electron transfer (ET) reaction between an anionic acceptor, coumarin-343 (C343), and a neutral donor, N,N-dimethylaniline (DMAN), has been investigated in composite supramolecular assemblies (mixed micelles) comprised of a pluronic copolymer (P123: EO20-PO70-EO20 or F88: EO103-PO39-EO103 where EO: ethylene oxide and PO: propylene oxide) and a cationic surfactant (CTAC: cetyltrimethylammonium chloride), following fluorescence quenching studies. Systematic increase in the quenching rates for the studied donor-acceptor system with the increasing CTAC to pluronic molar ratio in the mixed micelles demonstrates a large modulation in the ET rates. The mixed micellar systems in the present cases are formed through the incorporation of the hydrocarbon chains of CTAC into the poly-PO core of the pluronic micelles whereby the cationic head groups of CTAC are placed at the periphery of the micellar core, protruded into the hydrated poly-EO corona region, leading to the formation of a positively charged layer deep inside these mixed micelles. Thus, the anionic C343 dye, initially dissolved at the micelle-water interface, experiences a gradually increasing electrostatic attraction and is therefore systematically dragged deeper inside the micellar corona, as the CTAC composition is increased in the mixed micellar systems. Consequently, the ET rate of the C343-DMAN pair undergoes a large enhancement in the studied mixed micellar systems with the increasing CTAC to pluronic molar ratio. The present strategy of modulating ET reactions using such composite supramolecular assemblies can find applications in areas where bimolecular ET is an integral reaction step.

Solute dynamics in block-copolymer reverse micelles: do water content and copolymer concentration alter the microenvironment?

Solute dynamics has been explored in reverse micelles formed with the triblock copolymer (EO)13-(PO)30-(EO)13 (L64), where EO and PO represent ethylene oxide and propylene oxide units, respectively, with small amounts of water in p-xylene. To this effect, nonradiative rate constants (knr) and reorientation times (τr) of two carbocyanine derivatives, 3,3'-diethyloxadicarbocyanine iodide (DODCI) and merocyanine 540 (MC 540) have been measured at different mole ratios of water to copolymer (W) and also at three copolymer concentrations. By examining the nonradiative rate constants and the reorientation times of the two solutes, the microenvironment offered by L64/water/p-xylene reverse micellar system has been investigated. It has been observed that there is no variation in the nonradiative rate constants as well as in the reorientation times of both DODCI and MC 540 with an increase in W and [L64]. Since knr represents activated twist motion about the double bonds for these solutes, it is sensitive to the local friction and likewise, τr also provides information about the microenvironment. Thus, the results of this study indicate that DODCI and MC 540 are located in the cores of the L64 reverse micelles that are made up of hydrated ethylene oxide blocks and the hydration levels are not altered despite an increase in the water content and copolymer concentration. In other words, there is no variation in the microenvironment offered by L64/water/p-xylene reverse micellar system upon increasing W and [L64].

Platinum-cobalt bimetallic nanoparticles in hollow carbon nanospheres for hydrogenolysis of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural

The synthesis of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMF) from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a highly attractive route to a renewable fuel. However, achieving high yields in this reaction is a substantial challenge. Here it is described how PtCo bimetallic nanoparticles with diameters of 3.6 ± 0.7 nm can solve this problem. Over PtCo catalysts the conversion of HMF was 100% within 10 min and the yield to DMF reached 98% after 2 h, which substantially exceeds the best results reported in the literature. Moreover, the synthetic method can be generalized to other bimetallic nanoparticles encapsulated in hollow carbon spheres.
