Effectiveness of an ocular adhesive polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane hybrid thermo-responsive FK506 hydrogel in a murine model of dry eye. Bioact Mater 2022; 9:77-91. Abstract
Dry eye is a common ocular disease that results in discomfort and impaired vision, impacting an individual's quality of life. A great number of drugs administered in eye drops to treat dry eye are poorly soluble in water and are rapidly eliminated from the ocular surface, which limits their therapeutic effects. Therefore, it is imperative to design a novel drug delivery system that not only improves the water solubility of the drug but also prolongs its retention time on the ocular surface. Herein, we develop a copolymer from mono-functional POSS, PEG, and PPG (MPOSS-PEG-PPG, MPEP) that exhibits temperature-sensitive sol-gel transition behavior. This thermo-responsive hydrogel improves the water solubility of FK506 and simultaneously provides a mucoadhesive, long-acting ocular delivery system. In addition, the FK506-loaded POSS hydrogel possesses good biocompatibility and significantly improves adhesion to the ocular surface. In comparison with other FK506 formulations and the PEG-PPG-FK506 (F127-FK506) hydrogel, this novel MPOSS-PEG-PPG-FK506 (MPEP-FK506) hydrogel is a more effective treatment of dry eye in the murine dry eye model. Therefore, delivery of FK506 in this POSS hydrogel has the potential to prolong drug retention time on the ocular surface, which will improve its therapeutic efficacy in the management of dry eye.

Abstract
Unexpected hydrogel and coacervate are observed for dilute (1 mM) uranyl peroxide molecular cluster (Li68K12(OH)20[UO2(O2)(OH)]60, U60) solution in the presence of di- or trivalent salts. We report the mechanism as the formation of anisotropic two-dimensional (2-D) single-layer nanosheets, driven by counterion-mediated attraction due to the size disparity between U60 and small counterions. With weak monovalent cations, the nanosheets are bendable, resulting in hollow, spherical blackberry-type supramolecular assemblies in a homogeneous solution. With extra strong divalent or trivalent cations, the tough, free-standing sheets lead to gelation at ∼1 mM U60. These stiff nanosheets are difficult to bend into spherical blackberry-type structures; instead, they stay in solution and form hydrogel based on their significant excluded volumes. At higher ionic strength, the large, thin filmlike nanosheet structures stack together more compactly and consequently lead to the transition from gel phase to a coacervate phase, another surprise since it was formed without the presence of bulky polycations.

Abstract
There is a need to understand the role of polymer structure on its interaction with surfaces to produce effective functional surfaces. In this work, we produced two anionic polymers of lignin-3-sulfopropyl methacrylate (L-S) and poly(vinyl alcohol-co-vinyl acetate)-3-sulfopropyl methacrylate (PVA-S) with similar charge densities and molecular weights. On the gold-coated surface, we deposited self-assembled monolayers (SAM) bearing different terminal moieties namely, hydroxyl, carboxyl, methyl, and amine groups of alkanethiols. This study highlighted the difference between the interaction of L-S and PVA-S and functionalized self-assembled surfaces. The information was generated using advanced tools, such as an X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and a quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D), which facilitated the correlation development between polymer properties and deposition performance on the functionalized surfaces. The higher deposition of PVA-S than L-S onto OH and COOH surfaces was observed due to its greater hydrogen bonding development and higher solubility. The solubility and structure of PVA-S were also beneficial for its higher adsorption than L-S onto CH3 and NH2 surfaces. However, the variation in pH, temperature, and salt significantly affected the adsorption of the macromolecules. The interaction mechanism of synthetic and lignin based sulfonated materials with well-designed functional surfaces was investigated systematically.![]()

Abstract
We demonstrated here a facile and efficient synthesis of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane-based amphiphilic polymer by thiol-ene click chemistry. The properties of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS)⁻PEG amphiphilic polymers were studied in detail by a combination of ¹H NMR, 13C NMR, 29Si NMR FT-IR, GPC, and TG analysis. The newly-designed thiol-ene protocol obtains only anti-Markovnikov addition POSS-based amphiphilic polymers when compared with platinum-catalysed hydrosilylation method. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the resulting polymers are in the range of 0.011 to 0.050 mg/mL, and dynamic light scattering (DLS) results revealed that the obtained amphiphilic polymers can self-assemble into nanoparticles in aqueous solutions with a bimodal (two peaks) distribution. Furthermore, the specific polymer showed obvious thermo-sensitive behaviour at 45.5 °C.

Abstract
A series of alkynylplatinum(ii) terpyridine complexes functionalized with polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) moieties has been demonstrated to exhibit drastic color changes and give various distinctive nanostructures with interesting multi-stage morphological transformations from spheres to nanoplates in response to solvent conditions through the interplay of various intermolecular interactions, including hydrophilic-hydrophilic, hydrophobic-hydrophobic, Pt···Pt and π-π stacking interactions. These supramolecular architectures can be systematically modified and controlled through the molecular design and the variation of solvent compositions. In particular, drastic changes in color in response to solvent polarity were observed through the incorporation of the charged moieties, representing a new class of potential candidates for functional materials with sensing or imaging capabilities. This class of complexes has been studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy, electron microscopy, UV-vis absorption and emission spectroscopy.

Abstract
Pluronic F127 exhibits thermogelling behaviour at 20⁻30 °C via a micelle packing mechanism. Disruption of the micelle packing increases the sol-gel temperature, but results in the decrease of modulus. Herein, we reported a method to modify F127 with polyhedral oligosilsesquioxane (POSS) to impart a higher gelling temperature without yielding the property and strength of the thermogel. The thermal degradation temperature was enhanced to 15 °C after POSS incorporation and the gelling temperature shifted 10 °C higher, without sacrificing the modulus of the gel. Rheological studies supported the claim that the gel property was reinforced after POSS incorporation. F127-POSS copolymer matrix stored more energy from POSS reinforcement, which saw larger Lissajous curve areas before the collapse of the microstructure for the same amount of stress applied. These results indicated that modification with POSS would raise the sol-gel transition temperature without sacrificing the modulus of the gel.

Abstract
A series of dumbbell-shaped nanocomposite materials of poly(dimethylsiloxanes) (PDMSs) and polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSSs) were synthesized through hydrosilylation reactions of allyl- and vinyl-POSS and hydride-terminated PDMS. The chemical structures of the dumbbell-shaped materials, so-called POSS-PDMS-POSS triblocks, were characterized by (1)H NMR and FT-IR spectroscopy. The molecular weights of the triblock polymers were determined by gel permeation chromatography (GPC). Their size was analyzed by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and pulsed-field gradient stimulated echo (PFG STE) NMR experiments. The impact of POSS on the molecular mobility of the PDMS middle chain was observed by using (1)H spin-spin (T2) relaxation NMR. In contrast to the PDMS melts, the triblocks showed an increase in mobility with increasing molecular weight over the range studied due to the reduced relative concentration of constraints imposed by the end-tethered nanoparticles. The triblock systems were used to compare the impact of tethered nanoparticles on the mobility of the linear component compared to the mobility of the polymer in conventional blended nanocomposites. The tethered nanoparticles were found to provide more reinforcement than physically dispersed particles especially at high molecular weights (low particle concentration). The physical blends showed an apparent percolation threshold behavior.

Abstract
A new polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) methacrylate monomer, 1-(3-(methacryloyloxy)propyl)dimethylsiloxy-3,5,7,9,11,13,15-hepta(isobutyl)pentacyclo-[9.5.1.13,9.15,15.17,13]octasiloxane ((i-Bu)7POSS-OSiMe2-MA, 1), with a flexible spacer between the cubic POSS cage and methacrylate group was synthesized to reduce steric strain and thus achieve polymethacrylates (poly(POSS-MA)s) with high molecular weight (MW). Atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of 1 at high monomer concentration (1 M, corresponding to ca. 85 wt % of 1) led to polymers with the absolute number-average MW, determined by multiangle laser light scattering, Mn,MALLS = 2 350 000 (and apparent MW, measured by gel permeation chromatography with linear poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) standards, Mn,GPC = 550 000). Optimization of the reaction conditions, including the ATRP catalyst, targeted degrees of polymerization, monomer concentrations, as well as a monomer feeding, resulting in the first well-defined high MW polymers with POSS moieties.

Abstract
A novel water-soluble macromonomer based on octavinyl silsesquioxane has been synthesized and contains vinyl-terminated PEG 400 in each of the eight arms to promote water solubility. The macromonomer was characterized by NMR and FTIR and its aqueous solution properties examined. In water it exhibits an LCST with a cloud point at 23 °C for a 10 wt % aqueous solution. It is surface active with a CMC of 1.5 × 10(-5) M in water and in 20:80 v/v acetone/water the CMC is 7.1 × 10(-5) M, and TEM images showed spherical 22 nm aggregates in aqueous solution above the CMC. The macromonomer was copolymerized in a 20:80 v/v acetone/water mixture with a vinyl-terminated, triblock copolymer of lactide-PEG-lactide to form a library of cross-linked hydrogels that were designed for use as scaffolds for alveolar bone repair. The cross-linked copolymer networks were shown to contain a range of nm-μm sized pores and their swelling properties in water and PBS at pH 7.4 were examined. At pH 7.4 the hydrogel networks undergo a slow hydrolysis with the release of principally PEG and lactic acid fragments. The hydrogels were shown to be noncytotoxic toward fibroblast cultures at pH 7.4, both initially (days 1-5) and after significant hydrolysis had taken place (days 23-28).

Abstract
In this contribution, we report the synthesis of organic-inorganic random polymers from methacrylate-terminated poly(ethylene oxide) (MAPEO) (Mn = 950) and 3-methacryloxypropylheptaphenyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (MAPOSS) macromers via reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization with 4-cyano-4-(thiobenzoylthio) valeric acid (CTBTVA) as the chain transfer agent. The organic-inorganic random copolymers were characterized by means of (1)H NMR spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results of GPC indicate that the polymerizations were carried out in a controlled fashion. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the organic-inorganic random copolymers in bulk were microphase-separated and the POSS microdomains were formed via POSS-POSS interactions. In aqueous solutions the organic-inorganic random copolymers were capable of self-assembling into spherical nanoobjects as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic laser scattering (DLS). The self-assembly behavior of the organic-inorganic random copolymers was also found to occur in the mixtures with the precursors of epoxy. The nanostructures were further fixed via subsequent curing reaction and thus the organic-inorganic nanocomposites were obtained. The formation of nanophases in epoxy thermosets was confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). The organic-inorganic nanocomposites displayed the enhanced surface hydrophobicity as evidenced by surface contact angle measurements.

Abstract
In the present work, we designed a multicompartment gel by taking advantage of the ABC graft copolymer with a solvophilic A backbone and solvophobic B and C grafts. The mechanical properties of such designed gels were investigated by a combination of dissipative particle dynamics simulation and a nonequilibrium deformation technique. The extensional moduli of multicompartment gels were found to be dependent on polymer concentration and architectural parameters of the graft copolymers (the sequence of graft arms and the position of the graft points). The graft copolymer solutions undergo a sol-gel transition as the polymer concentration increases. This leads to an abrupt increase in the extensional modulus. The studies also revealed that the multicompartment gels of graft copolymers exhibit higher extensional moduli than those of nonmulticompartment gels of graft copolymers and triblock copolymer gels. The position of graft points plays another important role in determining the extensional moduli of the multicompartment gels. The effects of graft positions on the gel modulus were found to be associated with the bridging fraction of graft copolymer chains. The results gained through the present work may provide useful guidance for designing high-performance gels.
