Abstract
N-Nitrosamines are well established motifs to release nitric oxide (NO) under photoirradiation. Herein, a series of amphiphilic N-nitrosamine-based block copolymers (BCPx-NO) are developed to attain controlled NO release under photoirradiation (365 nm, 3.71 mW/cm2). The water-soluble BCPx-NO forms micellar architecture in aqueous medium and exhibits a sustained NO release of 92-160 μM within 11.5 h, which is 36.8-64.0% of the calculated value. To understand the NO release mechanism, a small molecular NO donor (NOD) resembling the NO releasing functional motif of BCPx-NO is synthesized, which displays a burst NO release in DMSO within 2.5 h. The radical nature of the released NO is confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The gradual NO release from micellar BCPx-NO enhances antibacterial activity over NOD and exhibits a superior bactericidal effect on Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus. In relation to biomedical applications, this work offers a comprehensive insight into tuning light-triggered NO release to improve antibacterial activity.

Abstract
Since temperature is one of the most significant physiological parameters that dictate the cellular status of living organisms, accurate intracellular temperature measurement is crucial and a valuable biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. Herein, we introduce the foremost example of a non-conjugated polymer as a next generation fluorescent thermometer which is capable of addressing the key shortcomings including toxicity and thermal-induced fluorescence quenching associated with π-π conjugated system-based thermometers developed so far. We revealed, for the first time, the unique photophysical and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics of well-known thermoresponsive poly(N-vinylcaprolactam) (PNVCL) devoid of any classical fluorophore entity. PNVCL underwent a coil to globular conformational transition in an aqueous medium and appeared to be fluorescent above its lower critical solution temperature (LCST) near body temperature (38 °C). Eventually, this intriguing aspect enabled higher cellular uptake of PNVCL at the LCST boundary. By virtue of the AIE effect, the thermo-induced aggregation phenomenon has been ingeniously utilized to apply PNVCL as a novel fluorescent thermometer for intracellular temperature determination.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Panoramic radiographs (PRs) play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment planning of a wide range of dental and maxillofacial diseases and conditions. To examine and to determine the status of oral lesions, dental anomalies and pathologies in panoramic radiographs, which were taken at the department of pediatric dentistry, Dental School, Marmara University, Istanbul, Turkey. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospective study consists of 1,056 randomly selected PRs of children aged from 4 to 12 years old, conducted at the department of pediatric dentistry at Dental School, Marmara University, between 5 th December 2011 and 17 th January 2012. The following information was obtained from the patients' records and PRs: Gender, age, presence or absence of oral lesions, dental anomalies and pathologies such as mesiodentes, supernumerary teeth, odontoma, radicular cyst, impacted tooth, and fusion. RESULTS One thousand and fifty-six PRs from 520 girls and 536 boys were observed. The mean and standard deviation age of the patients was 8.43 ± 2.17. Among 1,056 patients, 457 (43.28%) of them had oral lesions, discovered by the PRs. The age of these 457 patients was ranged from 4 to 12 years. There were 37 (3.50%) mesiodentes, 9 (0.85%) supernumerary teeth, 4 (0.38%) odontoma, 12 (1.14%) radicular cyst, 16 (1.52%) impacted tooth, and 20 (1.89%) fusion. CONCLUSIONS Oral lesions with a rate of 43.28% could be detected relatively at early age, as presented in the present study. Early treatment of these lesions, dental anomalies, and pathologies could avoid maxillofacial deformity and other complications.

Abstract
AIM To investigate dental caries and molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH)-related factors such as treatment, diet, brushing and salivary factors in children with cystic fibrosis (CF) compared with healthy peers. STUDY DESIGN A cohort study was performed. METHODS This study was performed on 30 CF children comprising patients at the Faculty of Medicine and 30 control children recruited from the Dental School. Salivary factors, dental caries, MIH, daily diet, brushing habits were analysed. Statistical analysis was calculated by SPSS for Windows. RESULTS Decay missing filled teeth (DMF-T) score was 4.6 ± 4.0 in CF and 7.7 ± 2.7 in control (p = 0.001). 43% of CF children with MIH were found to use antibiotics, but no significant difference in the caries experience was found with antibiotic usage (p > 0.05). DMF-T of CF adolescents (23%) who use Tobramycin was 7 ± 3.5. DMF-T of CF children (20%) who take other antibiotics was 2.5 ± 3.5, but no statistical difference was found (p = 0.054). Saliva pH, salivary flow rate, and buffering capacity were not found statistically significant (p > 0.05). STATISTICS Percentage arithmetic mean value, standard deviation, independent sample t test, Fisher's exact test, Chi-square test and Mann-Whitney U test were used, while a p value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Medication and diet could be considered as a risk factor for dental caries and factors such as salivary pH, good oral hygiene could play a protective role for oral health CF children. MIH frequency and lower caries experience seen in CF children could be due to salivary factors or pharmacological treatment they take. The multidisciplinary approach team would be advantageous in the management of children with CF and oral health should be under control during early years of life by paediatric dentists.

Abstract
Scytalidium thermophilum produces an extracellular phenol oxidase on glucose-containing medium. Certain phenolic acids, specifically gallic acid and tannic acid, induce the expression of the enzyme. Production at 45 degrees C in batch cultures is growth-associated and is enhanced in the presence of 160 microM CuSO4 x 5 H2O and 3 mM gallic acid. The highest enzyme activity is observed at pH 7.5 and 65 degrees C, on catechol. When incubated for 1 h at pH 7 and pH 8, 95% and 86% of the activity is retained. Thermostability decreases gradually from 40 degrees C to 80 degrees C. Estimated molecular mass is c. 83 kDa, and pI is acidic at c. 5.4. Substrate specificity and inhibition analysis in culture supernatants suggest that the enzyme has unique properties showing activity towards catechol; 3,4-dihydroxy-L-phenylalanine (L-DOPA); 4-amino-N, N-diethylaniline (ADA); p-hydroquinone; gallic acid; tannic acid and caffeic acid, and no activity towards L-tyrosine, guaiacol, 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethyl-benzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and syringaldazine. Inhibition is observed in the presence of salicyl hydroxamic acid (SHAM) and p-coumaric acid. Enzyme activity is enhanced by cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and the organic solvents dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and ethanol. No inhibition is observed in the presence of carbon monoxide. Benzoin, benzoyl benzoin and hydrobenzoin are converted into benzil, and stereoselective oxidation is observed on hydrobenzoin. The reported enzyme is novel due to its catalytic properties resembling mainly catechol oxidases, but displaying some features of laccases at the same time.
