Abstract
Polypeptoids, structural mimics of polypeptides, have attracted considerable attention due to their biocompatibility, proteolytic stability, thermal processability, good solubility, synthetic accessibility, and structural diversity. Polypeptoids have emerged as an interesting material in both polymer science and biological field. This review primarily discusses the research progress of polypeptoids prepared by controlled ring-opening polymerizations in the past decade, including synthetic strategies of monomers, polymerizations by different initiators, postfunctionalization, fundamental properties, crystallization-driven self-assembly, and potential biological applications.

Abstract
Surface-initiated polymerization reactions are a powerful tool to generate chain-end-tethered polymer brushes. This report presents a synthetic strategy that gives access to structurally well-defined hydrocarbon polymer brushes of controlled molecular weights, which can be further modified to generate more complex surface-attached polymer architectures. The hydrocarbon brushes reported in this study are polymethylene brushes that are obtained via surface-initiated C1 polyhomologation of dimethylsulfoxonium methylide. The strategy outlined here is based on the use of an alkylboronic acid pinacol ester initiator, which allows for controlled, unidirectional chain growth by monomer insertion into only the C-B bond of the initiator and which presents the polymerization active group at the growing polymer chain end. This surface-initiated C1 polyhomologation methodology is compatible with photopatterning strategies and can be used to generate micropatterned polymethylene brush films. Furthermore, conversion of the boronic ester chain-end functionalities to hydroxyl groups allows for selective chain-end modification and enables access to a variety of surface-anchored block copolymer architectures by chain extension via, for example, ring-opening or atom transfer radical polymerization chemistries.

Abstract
Peptide-functionalized surfaces, composed of optimized l-peptides, show a high resistance toward nonspecific adsorption of proteins. As l-peptides are known to be prone to proteolytic degradation, the aim of this work is to enhance the stability against enzymatic degradation by using the all d-peptide mirror image of the optimized l-peptides and to determine if the all d-enantiomer retains the protein-resistant and antifouling properties. Two l-peptides and their d-peptide mirror images, some of them containing the nonproteinogenic amino acid α-aminoisobutyric acid (Aib), were synthesized and tested against non-specific adsorption of the proteins lysozyme and fibrinogen and the settlement of marine diatom Navicula perminuta and marine bacteria Cobetia marina. Both the d-enantiomer and the insertion of Aib protected the peptides from proteolytic degradation. Protein resistance was enhanced with the d-enantiomers while maintaining the resistance toward diatoms.

Abstract
Shielding agents are commonly used to shield polyelectrolyte complexes, e.g., polyplexes, from agglomeration and precipitation in complex media like blood, and thus enhance their in vivo circulation times. Since up to now primarily poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) has been investigated to shield non-viral carriers for systemic delivery, we report on the use of polysarcosine (pSar) as a potential alternative for steric stabilization. A redox-sensitive, cationizable lipo-oligomer structure (containing two cholanic acids attached via a bioreducible disulfide linker to an oligoaminoamide backbone in T-shape configuration) was equipped with azide-functionality by solid phase supported synthesis. After mixing with small interfering RNA (siRNA), lipopolyplexes formed spontaneously and were further surface-functionalized with polysarcosines. Polysarcosine was synthesized by living controlled ring-opening polymerization using an azide-reactive dibenzo-aza-cyclooctyne-amine as an initiator. The shielding ability of the resulting formulations was investigated with biophysical assays and by near-infrared fluorescence bioimaging in mice. The modification of ~100 nm lipopolyplexes was only slightly increased upon functionalization. Cellular uptake into cells was strongly reduced by the pSar shielding. Moreover, polysarcosine-shielded polyplexes showed enhanced blood circulation times in bioimaging studies compared to unshielded polyplexes and similar to PEG-shielded polyplexes. Therefore, polysarcosine is a promising alternative for the shielding of non-viral, lipo-cationic polyplexes.

Abstract
Fighting pathogenic microbes is one of the great current challenges of mankind. Nature has developed several techniques to counteract microbial attacks. Science has also yielded several technologies, including antimicrobial polymers as biocides and polymers used for microbe killing and repelling surfaces. Recent scientific antimicrobial approaches are mimicking natural concepts. In this chapter, current developments in antimicrobial and antifouling polymers and surfaces are reviewed and discussed regarding the question whether they mimic nature or surpass it.

Abstract
Core-shell CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) are useful as tunable photostable fluorophores for multiple applications in industry, biology, and medicine. However, to achieve the optimum optical properties, the surface of the QDs must be passivated to remove charged sites that might bind extraneous substances and allow aggregation. Here we describe a method of growing an organic polymer corona onto the QD surface using the bottom-up approach of surface-initiated ring-opening metathesis polymerization (SI-ROMP) with Grubbs catalyst. CdSe/ZnS QDs were first coated with mercaptopropionic acid by displacing the original trioctylphosphine oxide layer, and then reacted with 7-octenyl dimethyl chlorosilane. The resulting octenyl double bonds allowed the attachment of ruthenium alkylidene groups as a catalyst. A subsequent metathesis reaction with strained bicyclic monomers (norbornene-dicarbonyl chloride (NDC), and a mixture of NDC and norbornenylethylisobutyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (norbornoPOSS)) allowed the construction of tethered organic homo-polymer or co-polymer layers onto the QD. Compounds were characterized by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and transmission electron microscopy. Atomic force microscopy showed that the coated QDs were separate and non-aggregated with a range of diameter of 48-53 nm.

Abstract
Polypeptoids represent a significant class of synthetic analogues of natural polypeptides with potential biomimetic applications in materials, catalysis, and pharmaceuticals, but their simple and general synthesis still remains a key challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that Ugi reaction of natural amino acids leads to structurally diverse polypeptoids, including γ- and δ-, as well as poly(ε-peptoid)s, under mild conditions (open to air, room temperature, and catalyst free). Moreover, this strategy also offers manifold opportunities to introduce functional groups such as fluorescent and clickable alkenes groups into polypeptoids. Such poly(ε-peptoid)s not only exhibit good biocompatibility and antibacterial activity, but perform very effectively as a drug-delivery system. The bacterial inhibition rate of poly(ε-peptoid) was up to 88.8% at concentration of 20 μg mL-1 in comparison to 61.8% of the poly(ε-lysine) control. Overall, this study offers us a general methodology toward facile preparation of polypeptoids for bioapplications.

Abstract
2D mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) nanosheets are prepared and exploited as a functional surface for grafting various polymer brushes. The PDA nanosheet and its polymer-brush derivatives show lateral integrity and are robust; therefore, they can be detached from their substrates. Cell-adhesion tests show that the PDA nanosheet promotes cell growth and attachment, while a PDA-based poly(3-sulfopropyl methacrylate) carpet exhibits nonfouling behavior.

Abstract
A stepwise chemistry route was used to prepare arrays of polymer nanostructures of poly(N-allyl glycine) on Si(111) using particle lithography. The nanostructures were used for studying surface reactions with advanced measurements of atomic force microscopy (AFM). In the first step to fabricate the surface platform, isolated nanopores were prepared within a thin film of octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS). The OTS served as a surface resist, and the areas of nanopores provided multiple, regularly shaped sites for further reaction. An initiator, (3-aminopropyl)triethoxysilane (APTES), was grown selectively inside the nanopores to define sites for polymerization. The initiator attached selectively to the sites of nanopores indicating OTS prevented nonspecific adsorption. Surface-initiated ring-opening polymerization of N-allyl N-carboxyanhydride with APTES produced polymer nanorods on the nanodots of APTES presenting amine functional groups. The surface changes for each step were monitored using high resolution atomic force microscopy (AFM). Slight variations in the height of the poly(N-allyl glycine) nanorods were observed which scale correspondingly to the initial dimensions of nanopores. The distance between adjacent polymer nanorods was controlled by the size of mesoparticle masks used in the experiment. This surface platform has potential application in biotechnology for smart coatings or biosensors.

Abstract
Polymer sequence programmability is required for the diverse structures and complex properties that are achieved by native biological polymers, but efforts towards controlling the sequence of synthetic polymers are, by comparison, still in their infancy. Traditional polymers provide robust and chemically diverse materials, but synthetic control over their monomer sequences is limited. The modular and step-wise synthesis of peptoid polymers, on the other hand, allows for precise control over the monomer sequences, affording opportunities for these chains to fold into well-defined nanostructures. Hundreds of different side chains have been incorporated into peptoid polymers using efficient reaction chemistry, allowing for a seemingly infinite variety of possible synthetically accessible polymer sequences. Combinatorial discovery techniques have allowed the identification of functional polymers within large libraries of peptoids, and newly developed theoretical modeling tools specifically adapted for peptoids enable the future design of polymers with desired functions. Work towards controlling the three-dimensional structure of peptoids, from the conformation of the amide bond to the formation of protein-like tertiary structure, has and will continue to enable the construction of tunable and innovative nanomaterials that bridge the gap between natural and synthetic polymers.
