Abstract
Even though functional copolymers with a low percentage of functional comonomer units (up to 20 mol%) are widely used, for instance for the development of polymer therapeutics and hydrogels, insights in the functional group distribution over the actual chains are lacking and the average composition is conventionally used to describe the functionalization degree. Here we report the visualization of the monomer distribution over the different polymer chains by a synergetic combination of experimental and theoretical analysis aiming at the construction of functionality-chain length distributions (FUNC-CLDs). A successful design of the chemical structure of the comonomer pair, the initial functional comonomer amount (13 mol%), and the temperature (100 °C) is performed to tune the FUNC-CLD of copoly(2-oxazoline)s toward high functionalization degree for both low (100) and high (400) target degrees of polymerization. The proposed research strategy is generic and extendable to a broad range of copolymerization chemistries, including reversible deactivation radical polymerization.

Abstract
Since its development in the last decades, controlled radical polymerization (CRP) has become a very promising option for the synthesis of polymers with controlled structure. The design and production of tailor-made materials can be significantly improved by developing models capable of predicting the polymer properties from the operating conditions. Nitroxide-mediated polymerization (NMP) was the first of the three main variants of CRP to be discovered. Although it has lost preference over the years against other CRP alternatives, NMP is still an attractive synthesis method because of its simple experimental implementation and environmental friendliness. This review focuses on deterministic methods employed in mathematical models of NMP. It presents an overview of the different techniques that have been reported for modelling NMP processes in homogeneous and heterogeneous media, covering from the prediction of average properties to the latest techniques for modelling univariate and multivariate distributions of polymer properties. Finally, an outlook of model-based design studies of NMP processes is given.

Abstract
Oil/water separation has inspired much research interest because of the damages caused to our natural environment due to oily wastewater. As a leader of advanced separation materials, electrospun polymeric fibrous mats having the properties of special surface wettability, high specific surface area, and high porosity will be a good membrane material for the separation of oily wastewater. Herein, we first prepared pH-responsive polymer poly(dimethylsiloxane)-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PDMS-b-P4VP) mat using electrospinning technology. The PDMS-b-P4VP fibrous mat with a thickness of around 250 μm exhibits good pH-switchable oil/water wettability and is able to effectively separate oil or water from layered oil/water mixtures by gravity driven through adjusting the pH value. Stemming from its porous structure and pH-switchable superwettability, the electrospun PDMS-b-P4VP fibrous mat achieved controllable separations with high fluxes of approximately 9000 L h-1 m-2 for oil (hexane) and 27 000 L h-1 m-2 for water. In addition, extended studies on the polymer/silica nanoparticulate (silica NP) composite fibrous mats show that the addition of an inorganic component improves the thermal stability, pH-switchable wettability, and separation performance of the fibrous mats (approximately 9000 L h-1 m-2 for hexane and 32 000 L h-1 m-2 for water). It can be concluded from the results that both polymer fibrous mats and silica-filled composite fibrous mats are good candidates for on-demand layered oil/water mixture separation.

Abstract
An electrochemical approach was used to control atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of n-butyl acrylate (BA) in miniemulsion. Electropolymerization required a dual catalytic system, composed of an aqueous phase catalyst and an organic phase catalyst. This allowed shuttling the electrochemical stimulus from the working electrode (WE) to the continuous aqueous phase and to the dispersed monomer droplets. As aqueous phase catalysts, the hydrophilic Cu complexes with the ligands N,N-bis( 2-pyridylmethyl)-2-hydroxyethylamine (BPMEA), 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy), and tris(2-pyridylmethyl)amine (TPMA) were tested. As organic phase catalysts, the hydrophobic complexes with the ligands bis(2-pyridylmethyl)-octadecylamine (BPMODA) and bis[2-(4-methoxy-3,5-dimethyl)-pyridylmethyl]octadecylamine (BPMODA*) were evaluated. Highest rates and best control of BA electropolymerization were obtained with the water-soluble Cu/BPMEA used in combination with the oil-soluble Cu/BPMODA*. The polymerization rate could be further enhanced by changing the potential applied at the WE. Differently from traditional ATRP systems, reactivity of the dual catalytic system did not depend on the redox potential of the catalysts but instead depended on the hydrophobicity and partition coefficient of the aqueous phase catalyst.

Abstract
Wastewater contaminated with oil or organic compounds poses threats to the environment and humans. Efficient separation of oil and water are highly desired yet still challenging. This paper reports the fabrication of a smart fiber membrane by depositing pH-responsive copolymer fibers on a stainless steel mesh through electrospinning. The cost-effective precursor material poly(methyl methacrylate)-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PMMA-b-P4VP) was synthesized using copper(0)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerization. The pH-responsive P4VP and the underwater oleophilic/hydrophilic PMMA confer the as-prepared membrane with switchable surface wettability toward water and oil. The three-dimensional network structure of the fibers considerably strengthens the oil/water wetting property of the membrane, which is highly desirable in the separation of oil and water mixtures. The as-prepared fiber membrane accomplishes gravity-driven pH-controllable oil/water separations. Oil selectively passes through the membrane, whereas water remains at the initial state; after the membrane is wetted with acidic water (pH 3), a reverse separation is realized. Both separations are highly efficient, and the membrane also exhibits switchable wettability after numerous cycles of the separation process. This cost-effective and easily mass-produced smart fiber membrane with excellent oil-fouling repellency has significant potential in practical applications, such as water purification and oil recovery.
