Abstract
The adsorption of a DNA fluorescent probe belonging to the thiazole orange family at the dodecane/water and dodecane/phospholipid/water interfaces has been investigated using a combination of surface second harmonic generation (SSHG) and all-atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Both approaches point to a high affinity of the cationic dye for the dodecane/water interface with a Gibbs free energy of adsorption on the order of -45 kJ/mol. Similar affinity was observed with a monolayer of negatively charged DPPG (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phospho-rac-(1-glycerol)) lipids. On the other hand, no significant adsorption could be found with the zwitterionic DPPC (1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine) lipids. This was rationalized in terms of Coulombic interactions between the monolayer surface and the cationic dye. The similar affinity for the interface with and without DPPG, despite the favorable Coulombic attraction in the latter case, could be explained after investigating the interfacial orientation of the dye. In the absence of a monolayer, the dye adsorbs with its molecular plane almost flat at the interface, whereas in the presence of DPPG it has to intercalate into the monolayer and adopt a significantly different orientation to benefit from the electrostatic stabilization.

Abstract
In nature, interfacial molecular recognition and chirality are of fundamental significance for the construction of biological assemblies. Lipid monolayers at liquid interface can be used as biomimetic models for studying molecular interactions in such assemblies. In this article, we will focus on the use of Langmuir monolayers for studying self-organization and insertion properties of several neoglycolipids. Two types of glycolipids have been considered, one in the context of the analysis of glycoconjugates of biological relevance, and one dealing with the ability of some glycoprobes to insert into a monolayer in relation with their efficiency for serving as membrane imaging systems.

Abstract
We present sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy data on monolayer films of pure stearonitrile and mixed films of stearonitrile and ferric stearate deposited by the Langmuir Blodgett technique. Films ranging in composition from pure stearonitrile to 65% stearonitrile/35% ferric stearate deposit in a head-to-tail, Z-type architecture while films of composition <65% stearonitrile deposit in a head-to-head, tail-to-tail, Y-type structure. The vibrational spectra of the monolayer films corresponding to these two different architectures show distinct and characteristic features in their CH stretching regions. Spectral analysis indicates little difference in the modes associated with the terminal methyl groups but large differences in the methylene CH(2) vibrational modes. These spectral differences are consistent with alkyl chains that possess uncompensated methylene oscillator strength arising from portions of the chain that are bent. This behavior is consistent with the energetics expected from a close-packed monolayer of stearonitrile molecules whose CN headgroups possess sizable dipole moments and are expected to adopt a large center-to-center angle to minimize electrostatic, dipole-dipole repulsive interactions.

Abstract
Recent developments in characterising Langmuir monolayers of a variety of film-forming materials and employing several physicochemical techniques are reviewed. The extension of the LB method to non-amphiphilic substances, especially macromolecular systems, has increased the need of a thorough understanding of Langmuir film properties, which requires characterising techniques that provide complementary information. Since there is vast literature in the subject, only selected examples are given of results that illustrate the potential of the techniques discussed.

Abstract
Langmuir-Blodgettfilms of poly(acrylonitrile-co-4-vinylpyridine) were assembled on quartz and calcium fluoride substrates from a preformed monolayer on water. The observed transfer ratios indicated z-type deposition. Infrared spectroscopic measurements in the transmission mode revealed a linear dependence of the nitrile absorbance as a function of the number of layers deposited. Polarized infrared spectroscopy was used to semiquantitatively determine the average chain orientation in the film. Calculations of dichroic ratios indicate that the chains lie relatively flat on the substrate surface. Polarized ultraviolet spectroscopy was also utilized to determine the orientation of the pyridine headgroups in the LB film, and the calculations indicated a pyridine tilt angle of approximately 19 degrees to the film surface.
