Self-assembling semiconducting polymers--rods and gels from electronic materials

Semi-conductive micellar networks of all-conjugated diblock and triblock copolymer blends

The crystallization-driven self-assembly of the blends of the all-conjugated block copolymers of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and poly(3-ethylhexylthiophene) (P3EHT) results in the cross-linking of the one-dimensional nanowires of P3HT-b-P3EHT, which is achieved by intercalating P3HT-b-P3EHT-b-P3HT into the nanowire cores. The micellar networks constitute flexible and porous materials that conduct electricity upon doping.

Influence of Backbone Regioregularity on the Optoelectronic and Mechanical Response of Conjugated Polyelectrolyte-Based Hydrogels

The ability to form robust, optoelectronically responsive, and mechanically tunable hydrogels using facile processing is desirable for sensing, biomedical, and light-harvesting applications. We demonstrate that such a hydrogel can be formed using aqueous complexation between one conjugated and one nonconjugated polyelectrolyte. We show that the rheological properties of the hydrogel can be tuned using the regioregularity of the conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) backbone, leading to significantly different mesoscale gel morphologies. We also find that the exciton dynamics in the long-time limit reflect differences in the underlying electronic connectivity of the hydrogels as a function CPE regioregularity. The influence of excess small ions on the hydrogel structure and the exciton dynamics similarly depends on the regioregularity in a significant way. Finally, electrical impedance measurements lead us to infer that these hydrogels can act as mixed ionic/electronic conductors. We believe that such gels possess an attractive combination of physical-chemical properties that can be leveraged in multiple applications.

3,4-Ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) End-Group Functionalized Poly-ε-caprolactone (PCL): Self-Assembly in Organic Solvents and Its Coincidentally Observed Peculiar Behavior in Thin Film and Protonated Media

End-group functionalization of homopolymers is a valuable way to produce high-fidelity nanostructured and functional soft materials when the structures obtained have the capacity for self-assembly (SA) encoded in their structural details. Herein, an end-functionalized PCL with a π-conjugated EDOT moiety, (EDOT-PCL), designed exclusively from hydrophobic domains, as a functional "hydrophobic amphiphile", was synthesized in the bulk ROP of ε-caprolactone. The experimental results obtained by spectroscopic methods, including NMR, UV-vis, and fluorescence, using DLS and by AFM, confirm that in solvents with extremely different polarities (chloroform and acetonitrile), EDOT-PCL presents an interaction- and structure-based bias, which is strong and selective enough to exert control over supramolecular packing, both in dispersions and in the film state. This leads to the diversity of SA structures, including spheroidal, straight, and helical rods, as well as orthorhombic single crystals, with solvent-dependent shapes and sizes, confirming that EDOT-PCL behaves as a "block-molecule". According to the results from AFM imaging, an unexpected transformation of micelle-type nanostructures into single 2D lamellar crystals, through breakout crystallization, took place by simple acetonitrile evaporation during the formation of the film on the mica support at room temperature. Moreover, EDOT-PCL's propensity for spontaneous oxidant-free oligomerization in acidic media was proposed as a presumptive answer for the unexpected appearance of blue color during its dissolution in CDCl3 at a high concentration. FT-IR, UV-vis, and fluorescence techniques were used to support this claim. Besides being intriguing and unforeseen, the experimental findings concerning EDOT-PCL have raised new and interesting questions that deserve to be addressed in future research.

Rheological Characteristics of 2D Titanium Carbide (MXene) Dispersions: A Guide for Processing MXenes

Understanding the rheological properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials in suspension is critical for the development of various solution processing and manufacturing techniques. 2D carbides and nitrides (MXenes) constitute one of the largest families of 2D materials with >20 synthesized compositions and applications already ranging from energy storage to medicine to optoelectronics. However, in spite of a report on clay-like behavior, not much is known about their rheological response. In this study, rheological behavior of single- and multilayer Ti₃C₂T _x in aqueous dispersions was investigated. Viscous and viscoelastic properties of MXene dispersions were studied over a variety of concentrations from colloidal dispersions to high loading slurries, showing that a multilayer MXene suspension with up to 70 wt % can exhibit flowability. Processing guidelines for the fabrication of MXene films, coatings, and fibers have been established based on the rheological properties. Surprisingly, high viscosity was observed at very low concentrations for solutions of single-layer MXene flakes. Single-layer colloidal solutions were found to exhibit partial elasticity even at the lowest tested concentrations (<0.20 mg/mL) due to the presence of strong surface charge and excellent hydrophilicity of MXene, making them amenable to fabrication at dilute concentrations. Overall, the findings of this study provide fundamental insights into the rheological response of this quickly growing 2D family of materials in aqueous environments as well as offer guidelines for processing of MXenes.

Thin Films Formed from Conjugated Polymers with Ionic, Water-Soluble Backbones

This paper compares the morphologies of films of conjugated polymers in which the backbone (main chain) and pendant groups are varied between ionic/hydrophilic and aliphatic/hydrophobic. We observe that conjugated polymers in which the pendant groups and backbone are matched, either ionic-ionic or hydrophobic-hydrophobic, form smooth, structured, homogeneous films from water (ionic) or tetrahydrofuran (hydrophobic). Mismatched conjugated polymers, by contrast, form inhomogeneous films with rough topologies. The polymers with ionic backbone chains are conjugated polyions (conjugated polymers with closed-shell charges in the backbone), which are semiconducting materials with tunable bad-gaps, not unlike uncharged conjugated polymers.

POLARON DYNAMICS. Long-lived photoinduced polaron formation in conjugated polyelectrolyte-fullerene assemblies

The efficiency of biological photosynthesis results from the exquisite organization of photoactive elements that promote rapid movement of charge carriers out of a critical recombination range. If synthetic organic photovoltaic materials could mimic this assembly, charge separation and collection could be markedly enhanced. We show that micelle-forming cationic semiconducting polymers can coassemble in water with cationic fullerene derivatives to create photoinduced electron-transfer cascades that lead to exceptionally long-lived polarons. The stability of the polarons depends on the organization of the polymer-fullerene assembly. Properly designed assemblies can produce separated polaronic charges that are stable for days or weeks in aqueous solution.

Crystallization-Driven Self-Assembly of Rod-Coil-Rod Pseudopolyrotaxanes into Spherical Micelles, Nanorods, and Nanorings in Aqueous Solutions

A novel rod-containing block copolymer is constructed by supramacromolecular self-assembly of α-cyclodextrin and a triblock copolymer with methoxy polyethylene glycol as the flanking chains and the midterm block alternately connected by 2,2-dimethylolbutyric acid and isophorone diisocyanate. The assembled rod-containing block copolymer shows an exciting phenomenon of concentration- and pH-dependent morphological switching of well-defined nanostructures. In the solutions at pH 9.2, spherical micelles, rod-like micelles, and hydrogel are observed successively with an increase of the concentration. Notably, the rod-like micelles are composed of spherical segments due to the combination of the crystalline cores of the spherical micelles. In addition, 1D nanostructures with different curvatures from linear rod-like micelles (pH 9.2) to ring-shaped micelles (pH 7.5) can be obtained by controlling the pH values of the assembled systems.

Synthesis of glycotriazololipids and observations on their self-assembly properties

Various carbohydrate-anchored triazole-linked lipids prepared by solvent-free mechanochemical azide-alkyne click reaction, on analysis by TEM, have been found to spontaneously self-assemble in solvents leading to structures of interesting physicochemical attributes. Interestingly, analogous compounds based on different sugars (e.g., d-glucose, and d-galactose, as also d-lactose) assemble in patterns distinctly different from each other thus reiterating the fact that the structure of the sugar as well as that of the lipid are important factors that determine the size and shape of the supramolecular assembly formed. Besides, the molecular self-assembly was also found to be solvent-as well as temperature-dependent.

Self-assembly of poly{1,4-phenylene-[9,9-bis(4-phenoxy-butylsulfonate)]fluorene-2,7-diyl} with oppositely charged phenylenevinylene oligoelectrolytes

The interaction of the water-soluble conjugated polyelectrolyte (CPE) poly{1,4-phenylene-[9,9-bis(4-phenoxy-butylsulfonate)]fluorene-2,7-diyl} (PBS-PFP) (degree of polymerization, DP, ∼3-6) with various concentrations of a homologous series of oppositely charged amphiphilic phenylenevinylene oligomers was investigated in water:dioxane mixtures and in aqueous micellar solutions of the non-ionic surfactant n-dodecylpentaoxyethylene glycol ether. The excellent spectral overlap between the CPE fluorescence and the conjugated oligoelectrolyte (COE) absorption indicates that energy transfer between these is a highly favored process, and can be tuned by changing the COE chain length. This is supported by time-resolved fluorescence data. The overall results provide support for different types of self-assembly, which are sensitive to the solvent environment and to the size of the phenylenevinylene oligoelectrolyte chain. It is suggested that large aggregates are formed in water:dioxane mixtures, while decorated core-shell structures are present in the surfactant solutions.
