Abstract
An efficient and sustainable electrochemical method for the synthesis of cyclic ethers and acyclic aldehydes from alkanols has been reported. This strategy has been successfully applied to cycloalkanols bearing different ring sizes and different types of nucleophiles. In addition, mechanistic investigations show that the reactions undergo sequential processes, including anodic oxidation, β-scission, and nucleophilic addition. This method provides a new synthetic approach to constructing cyclic ethers and terminal aldehydes from cycloalkanols and nucleophiles.

Abstract
An improved protocol has been developed for the direct sulfonamidation of unactivated alkyl alcohols using In(OTf)3 as a Lewis acid catalyst. Although the established methods using Lewis or Brønsted acids have been well-studied for the direct functionalization of alcohols, their substrate scope mainly focuses on the π-activated alcohols. In this reaction, unactivated aliphatic alcohols were evaluated and afforded the desired sulfonamide products with good to excellent yields.

Abstract
We report the development of a C(sp3 )-C(sp2 ) coupling reaction using styrene boronic acids and redox-active esters under photoredox catalysis. The reaction proceeds through an unusual polarity-mismatched radical addition mechanism that is orthogonal to established processes. Synergistic activation of the radical precursor and organoboron are critical mechanistic events. Activation of an N-hydroxyphthalimide (NHPI) ester by coordination to boron enables electron transfer, with decomposition leading to a nucleofuge rebound, activating the organoboron to radical addition. The unique mechanism enables chemoselective coupling of styrene boronic acids in the presence of other alkene radical acceptors. The scope and limitations of the reaction, and a detailed mechanistic investigation are presented.

Abstract
In this study, the present research describes a high-yield method for the synthesis of sulfonyl 2-aryl-5-methylenetetrahydropyrans by one-pot straightforward DABCO-promoted intramolecular Michael addition of β-sulfonyl styrene with 2-chloromethyl-1-propenol followed by intramolecular alkylation. This Baylis-Hillman-type pathway provides a highly effective stereoselective annulation by forming one carbon-oxygen bond and one carbon-carbon bond.

Abstract
Monoallylic 1,3- and 1,5-diols undergo Re2O7-mediated ionization to form allylic cations that engage in cyclization reactions to form dihydropyran products. The reactions give the 2,6-trans-stereoisomer as the major products as a result of minimizing steric interactions in a boat-like transition state. The results of these studies are consistent with cationic intermediates, with an intriguing observation of stereochemical retention in one example.

Abstract
The mechanism and stereoselectivity of the BF3-catalyzed, enamide-based domino reaction developed by Manolikakes et al. for tetrahydropyran synthesis have been studied using density functional theory calculations. All σ-bond formations were found to proceed through highly ordered cyclic or bicyclic transition states, leading to remarkable levels of diastereoselectivity. The role of the BF3 catalyst was demonstrated to be essential in both substrate activation and stereocontrol.

Abstract
The first Pd-catalyzed arylation of aza-Achmatowicz rearrangement products with arylboronic acids is achieved, providing versatile 2-aryldihydropyridinones for facile synthesis of highly functionalized 2-arylpiperidines. Key to this arylation is the use of non-phosphine-ligand palladium precatalyst. The substrate scope is demonstrated with >26 examples, and the utility of 2-aryldihydropyridinones is illustrated by the synthesis of a small collection of 2-arylpiperidines with substituents or functional groups at any carbon (C2-C6) as well as two NK1 receptor antagonists (+)-CP-999,94 and (+)-L-733,060.

Abstract
A novel method for the highly stereoselective synthesis of tetrahydropyrans is reported. This domino reaction is based on a twofold addition of enamides to aldehydes followed by a subsequent cyclization and furnishes fully substituted tetrahydropyrans in high yields. Three new σ‐bonds and five continuous stereogenic centers are formed in this one‐pot process with a remarkable degree of diastereoselectivity. In most cases, the formation of only one out of 16 possible diastereomers is observed. Two different stereoisomers can be accessed in a controlled fashion starting either from an E‐ or a Z‐configured enamide.

Abstract
Enantiopure β-amino ketone derivatives were synthesized by decarboxylative Mannich reaction of chiral N- tert-butanesulfinyl imines with β-keto acids and were subsequently transformed into cis-2,6-disubstituted piperidin-4-ones through an organocatalyzed condensation with aldehydes. Both enantiomers were accessible from the same precursors by inverting the order in the reaction sequence of the aldehydes involved in the imine formation and the intramolecular Mannich condensation. The synthesis of the piperidine alkaloids (+)-241D, (-)-epimyrtine, and (-)-lasubine II demonstrated the utility of this methodology.

Abstract
The direct, catalytic substitution of unactivated alcohols remains an undeveloped area of organic synthesis. Moreover, catalytic activation of this difficult electrophile with predictable stereo-outcomes presents an even more formidable challenge. Described herein is a simple iron-based catalyst system which provides the mild, direct conversion of secondary and tertiary alcohols to sulfonamides. Starting from enantioenriched alcohols, the intramolecular variant proceeds with stereoinversion to produce enantioenriched 2- and 2,2-subsituted pyrrolidines and indolines, without prior derivatization of the alcohol or solvolytic conditions.

Abstract
A convenient strategy for the synthesis of phthalides and γ-butyrolactones is reported. The method utilizes readily prepared allylic alcohols in formal Au(I)- and Pd(II)-catalyzed SN2' reactions. Using these catalysts, exclusive formation of the desired five-membered lactones is observed, completely avoiding the competing direct lactonization pathway that forms the undesired seven-membered ring with protic acids and alternative metal salts. This mild and operationally simple method notably tolerates exomethylene groups and should find use in both phthalide and terpene syntheses.

Abstract
Re2 O7 catalysis effects efficient and stereoselective dehydrative cyclization reactions from monoallylic diols, with stereocontrol arising from thermodynamic equilibration. This method was applied to a rapid synthesis of the spliceosome inhibitor herboxidiene. The route was also utilized for the synthesis of an analogue that highlights the importance of a single methyl group in biasing the conformation in the acyclic region of the molecule.

Abstract
Allylic amination, directly from alcohols, has been demonstrated without any Lewis acid activators using an efficient and regiospecific molecular iron catalyst. Various amines and alcohols were employed and the reaction proceeded through the oxidation/reduction (redox) pathway. A direct one-step synthesis of common drugs, such as cinnarizine and nafetifine, was exhibited from cinnamyl alcohol that produced water as side product.

Abstract
A domino reaction has been developed for the synthesis of oxygen bridged bicyclic ethers through the coupling of 4-(2-hydroxyethyl)cyclohex-3-enols with aldehydes in the presence of 10 mol% of molecular iodine in dichloromethane at 25 °C. This method is highly diastereoselective affording the corresponding bicyclic ethers, i.e. octahydro-4a,7-epoxyisochromenes in good yields with high selectivity. It is the first report on the synthesis of oxygen bridged bicyclic ethers using a domino Prins strategy.

Abstract
Hot water, acting as a mildly acidic catalyst, efficiently promoted intramolecular direct nucleophilic substitution reactions of unsaturated alcohols with heteroatom or carbon nucleophiles. In a mixed solvent of water and 1,1,1,3,3,3-hexafluoro-2-propanol (HFIP), polyene cyclizations using allylic alcohols as initiators gave the desired cyclized products, and in neat HFIP, a tricyclization reaction gave a tetracyclic product in 51% chemical yield.

Abstract
A myriad of natural and/or biologically active products include nitrogen- and oxygen-containing saturated heterocycles, which are thus considered as attractive scaffolds in the drug discovery process. As a consequence, a wide range of reactions has been developed for the construction of these frameworks, much effort being specially devoted to the formation of substituted tetrahydropyrans and piperidines. Among the existing methods to form these heterocycles, the metal-catalyzed heterocyclization of amino- or hydroxy-allylic alcohol derivatives has emerged as a powerful and stereoselective strategy that is particularly interesting in terms of both atom-economy and ecocompatibility. For a long time, palladium catalysts have widely dominated this area either in Tsuji-Trost reactions [Pd(0)] or in an electrophilic activation process [Pd(II)]. More recently, gold-catalyzed formation of saturated N- and O-heterocycles has received growing attention because it generally exhibits high efficiency and diastereoselectivity. Despite their demonstrated utility, Pd- and Au-complexes suffer from high costs, toxicity, and limited natural abundance, which can be barriers to their widespread use in industrial processes. Thus, the replacement of precious metals with less expensive and more environmentally benign catalysts has become a challenging issue for organic chemists. In 2010, our group took advantage of the ability of the low-toxicity and inexpensive FeCl3 in activating allylic or benzylic alcohols to develop iron-catalyzed N- and O-heterocylizations. We first focused on N-heterocycles, and a variety of 2,6-disubstituted piperidines as well as pyrrolidines were synthesized in a highly diastereoselective fashion in favor of the cis-compounds. The reaction was further extended to the construction of substituted tetrahydropyrans. Besides triggering the formation of heterocycles, the iron salts were shown to induce a thermodynamic epimerization, which is the key to reach the high diastereoselectivities observed in favor of the most stable cis-isomers. It is worth noting that spiroketals could be prepared by using this method, which was successfully applied to a synthetic approach toward natural products belonging to the bistramide family. We then turned our attention to heterocycles incorporating two heteroatoms such as isoxazolidines. These frameworks can be found in biologically active natural products, and in addition, they can be transformed into 1,3-amino alcohols, which are of importance in organic chemistry. The use of FeCl3·6H2O allowed the access to a large variety of 3,5-disubstituted isoxazolidines from δ-hydroxylamino allylic alcohol derivatives with good yields and diastereoselectivities in favor of the cis-isomer. Recently, a Lewis acid-catalyzed synthesis of six- and five-membered ring carbonates starting from linear tert-butyl carbonates was reported. In some cases, the mild and chemoselective InCl3 was preferred over FeCl3·6H2O to avoid side-product formation. The resulting cyclic carbonates were easily transformed into 1,3- or 1,2-diols, and a total synthesis of (3S,5S)-alpinikatin was achieved.
