Abstract
Iridium-catalyzed borylations of aromatic C-H bonds are highly attractive transformations because of the diversification possibilities offered by the resulting boronates. These transformations are best carried out using bidentate bipyridine or phenanthroline ligands, and tend to be governed by steric factors, therefore resulting in the competitive functionalization of meta and/or para positions. We have now discovered that a subtle change in the bipyridine ligand, namely, the introduction of a CF3 substituent at position 5, enables a complete change of regioselectivity in the borylation of aromatic amides, allowing the synthesis of a wide variety of ortho-borylated derivatives. Importantly, thorough computational studies suggest that the exquisite regio- and chemoselectivity stems from unusual outer-sphere interactions between the amide group of the substrate and the CF3 -substituted aryl ring of the bipyridine ligand.

Abstract
Selective ring-opening allene metathesis polymerization (ROAlMP) and ruthenium vinylidene formation from 1,2-cyclononadiene (1) by simple catalyst selection are discussed. Grubbs second-generation catalyst (G2) favors the formation of an alkylidene leading to the ROAlMP of (1). Grubbs first-generation catalyst (G1) favors vinylidene formation and prevents the homopolymerization of (1) even at elevated temperatures. Isolation and characterization of poly(1) by NMR analysis and MALDI-TOF confirms the generation of a well-defined polyallene that exhibits good thermal stability (TD ca. 390 °C) and fluorescent properties. Ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) of a highly strained norbornene derivative (NBE-iPr) at 80 °C using the ruthenium vinylidene generated from (1) is also investigated. The discovery of ROAlMP allows for the simple access of well-defined polyallenes from commercially available catalysts and will ultimately guide structure-property determinations of polyallenes.

Abstract
Metalla-aromatics are important complexes that show unique properties owing to their highly conjugated systems, which show Hückel or Möbius aromaticity. Recently, several metalla-aromatics showing spiro-aromaticity or σ-aromaticity have been reported. Herein, we report the isolation of the first cyclopropametallanaphthalenes, in which the metallacyclopropene ring shows σ-aromaticity and weak hyperconjugative aromaticity. The reaction of OsCl2 (PPh3 )3 with o-ethynylphenyl alkynes in the presence of PPh3 followed by protonation with HCl yielded the first cyclopropametallanaphthalenes. The reaction mechanism and the aromaticity were also investigated by density functional theory studies.

Abstract
The aromatic osmacyclopropenefuran bicycles [OsTp{κ3 -C1 ,C2 ,O-(C1 H2 C2 CHC(OEt)O)}(Pi Pr3 )]BF4 (Tp=hydridotris(1-pyrazolyl)borate) and [OsH{κ3 -C1 ,C2 ,O-(C1 H2 C2 CHC(OEt)O)}(CO)(Pi Pr3 )2 ]BF4 , with the metal fragment in a common vertex between the fused three- and five-membered rings, have been prepared via the π-allene intermediates [OsTp(η2 -CH2 =CCHCO2 Et)(OCMe2 )(Pi Pr3 )]BF4 and [OsH(η2 -CH2 =CCHCO2 Et)(CO)(OH2 )(Pi Pr3 )2 ]BF4 , and their aromaticity analyzed by DFT calculations. The bicycle containing the [OsH(CO)(Pi Pr3 )2 ]+ metal fragment is a key intermediate in the [OsH(CO)(OH2 )2 (Pi Pr3 )2 ]BF4 -catalyzed regioselective anti-Markovnikov hydration of ethyl buta-2,3-dienoate to ethyl 4-hydroxycrotonate.

The amide-directed synthesis of five-coordinate
osmium alkylidene derivatives from alkynes is reported. These types
of complexes, which have been elusive until now because of the tendency
of osmium to give hydride alkylidyne species, are prepared by reaction
of the dihydride OsH2Cl2(PiPr3)2 (1) with terminal alkynes containing
a distal amide group. Complex 1 reacts with N-phenylhex-5-ynamide and N-phenylhepta-6-ynamide
to give OsCl2{=C(CH3)(CH2)nNH(CO)Ph}(PiPr3)2 (n = 3 (2), 4 (3)). The relative position of carbonyl and NH groups in the organic
substrates has no influence on the reaction. Thus, treatment of 1 with N-(pent-4-yn-1-yl)benzamide leads
to OsCl2{=C(CH3)(CH2)3NHC(O)Ph}(PiPr3)2 (4). The new compounds are intermediate species in the cleavage
of the C–C triple bond of the alkynes. Under mild conditions,
they undergo the rupture of the Cα–CH3 bond of the alkylidene, which comes from the alkyne triple
bond, to afford six-coordinate hydride–alkylidyne derivatives.
In dichloromethane, complex 2 gives a 10:7 mixture of
OsHCl2{≡C(CH2)3C(O)NHPh}(PiPr3)2 (5) and OsHCl2{≡CCH(CH3)(CH2)2C(O)NHPh}(PiPr3)2 (6). The first complex
contains a linear separation between the alkylidyne Cα atom and the amide group, whereas the spacer is branched in the
second complex. In contrast to the case for 2, complex 4 selectively affords OsHCl2{≡C(CH2)3NHC(O)Ph}(PiPr3)2 (7). In spite of their instability, these compounds give the
alkylidene–allene metathesis, being a useful entry to five-coordinate
vinylidene complexes, including the dicarbon-disubstituted OsCl2(=C=CMe2)(PiPr3)2 (8) and the monosubstituted OsCl2(=C=CHCy)(PiPr3)2 (9).

Abstract
Two cyclopropyl allenylidene complexes [Ru]=C=C=C(R)(C(3)H(5)) ([Ru]=[RuCp(PPh(3))(2)], Cp=Cyclopentadienyl; R=thiophene (2a) and R=Ph (2b)) are prepared from the reactions of [Ru]Cl with the corresponding 1-cyclopropyl-2-propyn-1-ol in the presence of KPF(6). Thermal treatment, halide-anion addition, and palladium-catalyzed reactions of 2a and 2b all lead to a ring expansion of the cyclopropyl group, giving the vinylidene complexes 4a and 4b, respectively, each with a five-membered ring. This ring expansion proceeds by C-C bond formation between Cβ of the cumulative double bond and a methylene group of the cyclopropyl ring. In the reaction of 2a with pyrrole, consecutive formation of two C-C bonds, one between C-2 of pyrrole and Cγ of 2a and the other between C-3 of pyrrole and Cα, results in the formation of 6a. The reaction proceeds by addition of pyrrole and 1,3-proton shifts. The hydrogenation of 2a by NaBH(4) is carried out in different solvents. The cumulative double bonds are reduced regioselectively to give a mixture of 7a and 8a. Interestingly, use of different solvents leads to different ratios of 7a and 8a. Presence of a protic solvent like methanol in dichloromethane or chloroform solution increases the yield of 8a, thus revealing that both the rates of hydroboration and deboronation increase. The structures of two new complexes 4a and 6a have been firmly established by X-ray diffraction analysis.
