Synthesis and Characterization of Rare Earth Siloxide Complexes, M[OSi(OtBu)3]3(L)x where L is HOSi(OtBu)3 and x = 0 or 1

Yttrium tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) complexes grafted onto MCM-48 mesoporous silica nanoparticles

A series of tris(trimethylsilylmethyl) yttrium donor adduct complexes was synthesized and fully characterized by X-ray diffraction, ¹H/¹³C/²⁹Si/³¹P/⁸⁹Y heteronuclear NMR and FTIR spectroscopies as well as elemental analyses. Treatment of Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(thf)_x with various donors Do led to complete (Do = TMEDA, DMAP) and partial displacement of THF (Do = NHC^iPr, DMPE). Exceptionally large ⁸⁹Y NMR shifts to low field were observed for the new complexes. Complexes Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(tmeda) and Y(CH₂SiMe₃)₃(dmpe)(thf) were chosen to perform surface organometallic chemistry, due to a comparatively higher thermal stability and the availability of the ³¹P nucleus as a spectroscopic probe, respectively. Mesoporous nanoparticles of the MCM-48-type were synthesized and used as a 3^rd generation silica support. The parent and hybrid materials were characterized using X-ray powder diffraction, solid-state-NMR spectroscopy, DRIFTS, elemental analyses, N₂-physisorption, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The presence of surface-bound yttrium alkyl moieties was further proven by the reaction with carbon dioxide. Quantification of the surface silanol population by means of HN(SiHMe₂)₂-promoted surface silylation is shown to be superior to titration with lithium alkyl LiCH₂SiMe₃.

Small molecule activation by multimetallic uranium complexes supported by siloxide ligands

The synthesis and reactivity of uranium compounds supported by the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligand is surveyed. The multiple binding modes of the tert-butoxysiloxide ligand have proven very well suited to stabilize highly reactive homo- and heteropolymetallic complexes of uranium that have shown an unusual high reactivity towards small molecules such as CO2, CS2, chalcogens and azides. Moreover, these ligands have allowed the isolation of dinuclear nitride and oxide bridged complexes of uranium in various oxidation states. The ability of the tris-tert-butoxysiloxide ligands to trap alkali ions in these nitride or oxide complexes leads to unprecedented ligand based and metal based reduction and functionalization of N2, CO, CO2 and H2.

A reactive coordinatively saturated Mo(iii) complex: exploiting the hemi-lability of tris(tert-butoxy)silanolate ligands

Hemilabile tris(tert-butoxy)silanolate ligands allow stabilizing a mononuclear octahedral Mo(iii) complex without quenching its reactivity towards small molecules (N₂, CO₂, N₂O).

Coordinatively unsaturated Mo(iii) complexes have been identified as highly reactive species able to activate dinitrogen without the need for a sacrificial reducing agent. Here, we report a coordinatively saturated octahedral Mo(iii) complex stabilized by κ²-tris(tert-butoxy)silanolate ligands, which is yet highly reactive towards dinitrogen and small molecules. The combined high stability and activity are ascribed to the dual binding mode of the tris(tert-butoxy)silanolate ligands that allow unlocking a coordination site in the presence of reactive small molecules to promote their activation at low temperatures.

Single-Sites and Nanoparticles at Tailored Interfaces Prepared via Surface Organometallic Chemistry from Thermolytic Molecular Precursors

Heterogeneous catalysts are complex by nature, making particularly difficult to assess the structure of their active sites. Such complexity is inherited in part from their mode of preparation, which typically involves coprecipitation or impregnation of metal salts in aqueous solution, and the associated complex surface chemistries. In this context, surface organometallic chemistry (SOMC) has emerged as a powerful approach to generate well-defined surface species, where the metal sites are introduced by grafting tailored molecular precursors. When combined with thermolytic molecular precursors (TMPs) that can lose their organic moieties quite readily upon thermal treatment, SOMC provides access to supported isolated metal sites with defined oxidation state and nuclearity inherited from the precursor. The resulting surface species bear unusual coordination imposed by the surface that provides them high reactivity in comparison with their molecular precursor. In addition, these molecularly defined species bare strong resemblance with the active sites of supported metal oxides. However, they typically contain a higher proportion of active sites making structure-activity relationship possible. They thus constitute ideal models for this important class of industrial catalysts that are used in numerous applications such as olefin epoxidation (Shell process), olefin metathesis (triolefin process), ethylene polymerization (Phillips catalysts), or propane dehydrogenation (Catofin and related processes). This SOMC/TMP approach can thus provide detailed information about the structure of active sites in industrial catalysts, their mode of initiation and deactivation, as well as the role of the support and specific thermal treatment on the final activity of the catalysts. Nonetheless, these structurally characterized surface sites still exhibit heterogeneous environments borrowed from the support itself, that explain the intrinsic complexity of heterogeneous catalysis. Furthermore, SOMC/TMP can also be used to generate and investigate supported metal nanoparticles. Starting from the well-defined isolated sites, that also contain adjacent surface OH groups, one can graft a second metal and then generate after treatment under hydrogen small and narrowly dispersed alloys or nanoparticles with tailored interfaces that can show improved catalytic performances and are amiable to detailed structure-activity relationships. This approach is illustrated by two case studies: (1) formation of supported copper nanoparticles at tailored interfaces that contain isolated metal sites for the selective hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to methanol, allowing for a detailed understanding of the role of dopants and supports in heterogeneous catalysis, and (2) preparation of highly selective and productive propane dehydrogenation catalysts based on silica-supported Pt _xGa _y alloy. Overall, this Account shows how the combination of SOMC and TMP helps to generate catalysts, particularly suited for elucidating structural characterization of active sites at a molecular-level which in turn enables structure-activity relationship to be drawn. Such detailed information obtained on well-defined catalysts can then be used to understand complex effects observed in industrial catalysts (effects of supports, additives, dopants, etc.), and to extract information that can then be used to improve them in a more rational way.

Carbon dioxide reduction by dinuclear Yb(ii) and Sm(ii) complexes supported by siloxide ligands

Low-coordinate dinuclear lanthanide complexes supported by siloxides effect the reduction of carbon dioxide to both carbonate and oxalate, but the cooperative binding of CO2 to the two Ln(ii) cations in the dimer favours oxalate formation.

Redox-enhanced hemilability of a tris(tert-butoxy)siloxy ligand at cerium

Combined structural/electrochemical/computational studies of ceric Ce[OSi(OtBu)₃]₄ and cerous [Ce{OSi(OtBu)₃}₄][K(2.2.2-crypt)] suggest a redox-modulated coordination switch of a tris(tert-butoxy)siloxy ligand.

Reduction of a Cerium(III) Siloxide Complex To Afford a Quadruple-Decker Arene-Bridged Cerium(II) Sandwich

Organometallic multi-decker sandwich complexes containing f-elements remain rare, despite their attractive magnetic and electronic properties. The reduction of the Ce^III siloxide complex, [KCeL₄ ] (1; L=OSi(OtBu)₃ ), with excess potassium in a THF/toluene mixture afforded a quadruple-decker arene-bridged complex, [K(2.2.2-crypt)]₂ [{(KL₃ Ce)(μ-η⁶ :η⁶ -C₇ H₈ )}₂ Ce] (3). The structure of 3 features a [Ce(C₇ H₈ )₂ ] sandwich capped by [KL₃ Ce] moieties with a linear arrangement of the Ce ions. Structural parameters, UV/Vis/NIR data, and DFT studies indicate the presence of Ce^II ions involved in δ bonding between the Ce cations and toluene dianions. Complex 3 is a rare lanthanide multi-decker complex and the first containing non-classical divalent lanthanide ions. Moreover, oxidation of 1 by AgOTf (OTf=O₃ SCF₃ ) yielded the Ce^IV complex, [CeL₄ ] (2), showing that siloxide ligands can stabilize Ce in three oxidation states.

Magnetic Memory from Site Isolated Dy(III) on Silica Materials

Achieving magnetic remanence at single isolated metal sites dispersed at the surface of a solid matrix has been envisioned as a key step toward information storage and processing in the smallest unit of matter. Here, we show that isolated Dy(III) sites distributed at the surface of silica nanoparticles, prepared with a simple and scalable two-step process, show magnetic remanence and display a hysteresis loop open at liquid ⁴He temperature, in contrast to the molecular precursor which does not display any magnetic memory. This singular behavior is achieved through the controlled grafting of a tailored Dy(III) siloxide complex on partially dehydroxylated silica nanoparticles followed by thermal annealing. This approach allows control of the density and the structure of isolated, "bare" Dy(III) sites bound to the silica surface. During the process, all organic fragments are removed, leaving the surface as the sole ligand, promoting magnetic remanence.
